Dear families,

As-salamu alaykum – I would like to extend Thanks to the whole of the Arabic department, pupils and parents involved in making Arabic language week such as success.

We would also like to express our gratitude to all who have completed the parental survey which is still open and can be found here. We appreciate all of the feedback so far, both the kind comments and areas of improvement. Excellence has no limit! Please also be aware that we are always striving to improve the facilities around the school. All pupils are reminded to flush toilets and wash hands after use, we are also having on-going discussions with our cleaning company. Additionally staff are monitoring the use of washrooms around the school so if the standard of use falls below the high levels expected it can be reported immediately.

MESSAGES

During this week all members of the Al Mamoura family took a very responsible attitude towards the lock-down practise that was undertaken. We hope that no school would ever have to be in a position to have to do this in reality but it is important that we can at least prepare for any unforeseen events.

Tuesday the 6th February will be Safer Internet day and next week I will look forward to visiting individual year groups to outline ways in which pupils (and adults) can stay safe online.

A Reminder we have our International Day coming up on Tuesday 13th February, please contact FOAM if you would like to set up a stall to represent a country. Wishing you all a relaxing weekend.

Parents of secondary students are reminded that jewellery, especially expensive jewellery is not permitted to be worn at school if it is outside the school policy.

From next week, students who wear non-compliant jewellery items will be sent to Ms Kerr to have it removed; signed for by the student and placed in a sealed envelope to be stored in the safe-room. A parent or other adult will then be required to come to school to collect it. Older students are influencing the younger students, who are taking valuable pieces of jewellery from home to ‘copy’ the older students. We are very concerned that these items may get lost or damaged and the school cannot be held responsible in this event. We thank you for your continued support in this matter.

Mr Michael Blakey Head of Primary

Mrs Margaret McArthur-Reid Head of Secondary

Ahoy there me hearties! It has been a week filled with adventure in FS2. Our most exciting adventure was our trip to Little World where the children got to create their very own toothpaste to stop the pirates rotting their teeth. They also got to make potions to help mermaids swim faster, it was marvellous! The children have even been talking and writing about pirates! We thought about what pirates will need on adventure and wrote them a list so they wouldn’t forget anything. There were lots of great ideas such as parrots, treasure maps and eyepatches. We’ve also shown how sensible and brave

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS FOUNDATION STAGE 2

we can be in FS2 when we practiced the lockdown. All the children followed instructions and kept quiet. Well done FS2!

Thank you to all of the parents who attended the two recent FS family workshops on phonics and on-line educational games, it is always lovely to welcome you into our school. Please note that the next FS workshop will be on Tuesday 27th February at 8am in the cafeteria, this time we will be looking at Phase 3 phonics. This is aimed particularly at FS2 families but FS1 and Year 1 families will be more than welcome to attend too.

We have really enjoyed Arabic Language Week and we even helped Mrs Forbes learn to write her name in Arabic!

This week we read The Smartest Giant in Town. The children had lots of fun acting out the different scenes from the book and creating freeze frames in their groups. We found lots of different examples of rhyming pairs in the story and took part in a range of rhyming activities during our guided reading sessions.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 1

We have been talking about the importance of hygiene especially using the bathrooms and washing our hands. The school nurse visited our classes and we learned how to wash our hands properly. In Maths we have started multiplication, the children have really impressed their teachers with their clever counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Next week we will be practising division by sharing.

As part of our Grow, Grow, Grow topic we have planted some cress seeds and are all very excited to observe them growing over the coming weeks. We are investigating where the seeds will grow best. We placed one pot inside a dark cupboard, one beside a window and covered one with cling film so that it will not have any air. Which do you think will grow the best?Next week we will be learning about staying safe online as part of Internet Safety Week. We are also looking forward to our visiting author Laura Wall. Not forgetting that each class will also visit the book fair in the cafeteria.

SPORTS NEWSFOOTBALL

U11B Boys: On Monday , Cranleigh came to Al Mamoura for the third league game of the season.Al Mamoura started the game brightly with some good passing moves and lots of solid defending by Cathal Boyle and Mohamed Al Ali. It then started to become a game with lots of tackles and neither team keeping possession of the ball. We then came into the 2nd half which was a similar story to the 1st half, elements of passing and lots of effort from our boys but unfortunately the ball just didn’t find the net. The first goal then came 3 minutes before the end of the game where astonishingly found its way into the Mamoura net off one of our players. 1-0 down with 3 minutes to go. The boys fought on and tried to score an equaliser but it just didn’t come. The game finished 1-0 to Cranleigh. This was a much improved performance and the boys are getting better week by week!

Controversial goal denies Al Mamoura a draw!

Al Mamoura U11A boys team were denied a draw with Cranleigh A this week. The ball did not appear to fully cross the line, before the referee signalled for a goal. Despite this unfortunate incident which can happen in football, our Al Mamoura students accepted the decision and continued to battle hard and give all their effort to playing some excellent football. The game was a very close game and had been very even, with Al Mamoura having the slightly better chances to score. Although the result is an unfair reflection of the game, it is fantastic to see our students making fantastic progress in their own footballing ability and continually developing as a team.

NETBALL The U11C Netball team played against Cranleigh School At Al Mamoura on Monday. They had two matches against two different Cranleigh teams. The girls improved as the games progressed. Aysha created some great spaces on court, Mariam made some great interceptions in the shooting circle and Evelyn scored two great goals. Unfortunately, the girls lost both games. Well done to everyone that played.

On Monday afternoon the U11B Netball team faced tough opposition in the form of Cranleigh school. Al Mamoura

defended really well in both games, always remembering to stick with their player and make it as difficult as possible for them to receive the ball. Although we did not win this week the team is improving all of the time, showing that they understand the game much better. Moza played extremely well this week and was always available on the edge of the circle to help the defenders get the ball away from our goal. I look forward to seeing the whole team at training on Wendesday for more practice together.

The U11A girls played their third match of the season against Cranleigh. The girls started the game very well ensuring that they stuck to their players however Cranleigh were very good at dodging and getting in front of our girls that they were able to make some brilliant interceptions, which allowed the Cranleigh to get the ball into their attacking D straight to the GA who was able to score from any point around the D. Both teams played well but unfortunately the Mamoura girls were called up for a number of obstructions inside the D which allowed the Cranleigh team to take the lead by being able to have a few penalty passes. In the fourth quarter of the game the girls listened to the feedback at half time and began to make space and offer options to each other, the ball travelled well up the court and in the hands of Hind who scored the first goal, which was then repeated two minutes later and the

final score was 7-2 to Cranleigh. Well done to the girls who played and to Zubia who was identified as being player of the match with her amazing interceptions.

The Under 11 girls also played in their first Netball tournament of the season. The BSAK 7s, where teams come to play from all over the Emirates. The girls played against teams they usually play in the ADISSA league and also others from as far away as Dubai. Some of the team were injured prior to the tournament, meaning that the girls had to play in positions they were not used to. But they adapted very quickly during their first game against Raha, which ended in a 1-0 score to Raha. The girls entered every game with their heads held high and fought through every game with some brilliant interceptions from Zubia and brilliant movement around the court from Malak. We were just unfortunate that some of the other girls were so much taller than us, so were able to get their hands on the ball very easily. However, all of the games were low scoring because of our strong defence. Our girls last game of the evening was the playoff for 5th place where they met Raha again and really stepped up, winning all the center passes and moving the ball up the court to our attacking D where Hind was in prime place to receive the ball and shoot. This resulted in our final score being 3-0 to Al Mamaoura and 5th position in the tournament. Well done girls.
