FROM THE

DESKLITTLE THINGSGO A LONG WAY...Every year on June 5, we suddenly wake up to the fact that the environment is in a constant state of

degradation and something should be done about it, right now. Well, it’s certainly a good thought, but do we

actually need a day to remind ourselves that we must do our bit for Planet Earth?

You can plant a tree on June 5 and proclaim your love for the green cause. But let World Environment Day

not be a day of sudden ‘reckoning’, but rather a day to reiterate and reinforce your commitment to continue

to ‘go green’ in your everyday lives.

While the commitment to the cause can be on a macro-level, remember that the everyday things you can do

at a ‘micro-level’ can make a huge difference.

The United Nations Environment Programme website lists some useful, everyday tips that you could incorporate

into your daily lives. Here are a few that make great ‘green sense’:

• Save water in simple ways like not letting the tap run while shaving, washing your face or brushing your teeth.

• Use towels for drying your face and hands instead of tissues that are used and thrown away.

• When packing your lunch, opt for reusable containers instead of wrapping the food in aluminium foil or

plastic wrap.

• If you have no other choice than to drive to work, look for the most fuel-efficient car model and keep your

tyres inflated to the correct pressure.

• Turn over an old document and write on the back when you need a pad for lists and messages.

• Turn off all unnecessary lights, especially in unused rooms to save energy.

• Say ‘no’ to plastic bags whenever you shop.

• Lower your office’s carbon footprint by setting computers, monitors, printers, copiers, speakers and other

business equipment to their energy saving feature and turning them off at the end of the day.

• If you’re in search of something to personalise your workspace, look no further than the humble houseplant.

Houseplants are good for the environment because they remove quantities of pollutants present in the air.

• And don’t forget, try and plant a tree whenever you can!

There’s lots more you can do... Just look around, there are hundreds of ways by which you can do little things

that matter hugely.

Remember, sometimes it’s the routine stuff that helps you look at things in a fresh, new light. And makes a

huge difference in bringing about the change you want to see in this world!

A greener and a better place to live in!

Until next month, stay cool, people!

ROCKIN’ THE GREENS Happy 7th Birthday Al Mar’a team! It seems like the magazine’s been around forever and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I loved all the colours of the rainbow but especially loved the green section! I tried out the Thai Prawn Curry Recipe for my family and my kids and husband loved it! My younger daughter even went out and bought the white half jacket featured in the green fashion pages! As always, great job guys!Krishna MukherjeeDarsait

STROKE OF GENIUSI loved your special anniversary issue! The idea of separating the issue by colour was a stroke of genius by the way. I’m a great believer in how colour affects aspects of your life and I found the pages at the start of each ‘colour theme’ very informative.

I always wear orange when I feel I need to bring out my creative side! You guys proved I’m not ‘different’ after all!May BeldaAl Khuwair

SILENCE SPEAKSI am writing to compliment you on the article on Marianne Karam. The interview struck a chord with me and I found myself identifying with her. Unlike a lot of us, Marianne is honest about her life goals. She said I must admit my future plans are vague to me. My dreams however, are more than clear.” Isn’t that the case with most of us? Here’s hoping that all of us will emerge stronger and better people out of our own personal silences! Keep up the good work! Aliya Al BalushiAl Ghubra

VOTE OF THANKSCan I just start by saying that I loved your anniversary issue. You guys do a great job every month. I’ve been a regular reader for a long time but have never really bothered writing in. But I think you deserve some thanks from the readers. Thank you Team Al Mar’a for lighting up our lives each month. My daughters and I love the magazine and even my husband has been caught occasionally guiltily sneaking peaks at your section on cars. So thanks guys! You rock, EVERY month! Shaima KhanMuttrah

PRIZE-WINNING LETTERS GREAT WORK!Team Al Mar’a – marvellous work! Your anniversary issue was definitely a collector’s edition with its concept of colours and how it relates to every facet of life. It is true, life is indeed like a rainbow. The interviews by Kamal Khimji and Aisha Al Kharusi will certainly inspire a lot of women. Everything is going great for Al Mar’a and I wish it great success in the future too! Thanks once again for a wonderful anniversary issue.Sangeetha SundarrajanWadi Al Kabir

GREAT CONCEPTHey! Happy 7th Anniversary Al Mar’a! You’ve become such a huge part of my life over the years and I thought your special anniversary issue was truly joyful. The rainbow coloured theme was stunningly executed and I enjoyed the extra pages. Here’s to seven more years of excellence! Zainab Al HarthyQurum

SUPER CARThe new Ferrari 458 Italia is here. The car continues the Ferrari tradition of putting the thrill into driving as a result of track-derived technological innovations. The Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car from every point of view: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics, just to name a few. The new V8-engined berlinetta is a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology, characteristics for which Italy as a nation is well-known. The 458 Italia is designed for owners for whom the priority is uncompromising on-road performance with occasional track day capability, but who still demand a car that is useable in day-to-day driving like all Ferrari’s recent models. Feel pampered and indulged... it’s a Ferrari after all!

VALUE FOR MONEYThis is the right time to buy a GMC Acadia. Take our word for it. Moosa Abdul Rahman Hassan & Co. is offering a special promotion on all GMC Acadia crossovers in showrooms across Oman. The Acadia is now available starting from only Rials 12,995. Here’s some info on the Acadia. It is just right for customers seeking the spaciousness and capability of an SUV, with the smooth ride and responsive handling of a crossover. The Acadia also benefits from an enhanced version of the 3600 cc V-6 VVT engine that uses gasoline direct injection technology to help produce 301 (net) horsepower, greater fuel economy and increased towing capacity. The promotion is for a limited period only. So the time to act is now.

SUCCESS STORYIt’s hit a million! We’re talking of the Renault Logan that within four years of launch has sold one million cars. People from 59 countries are enjoying it, with projected sales set to increase. It’s comfortable, easy to drive and gives more value for money than any other car in its class. The original inspiration behind the Logan was based around the concept of designing a vehicle which depicts modernity, reliability, spaciousness and affordability, which was strategically positioned to attract the middle-class market. Renault’s recipe for success hinges on a simple principle - the customer gets everything required in a vehicle without the superfluous. Big on space and low on cost - now that’s what we call a real wise and economical buy!

SAFETY FIRST‘Drive Safe’ is the message that needs to be hit home, every time, all the time. Shell Oman and Zubair did their bit for the GCC Traffic Safety Week by running a safety themed promotion recently. It encouraged and educated customers across the Sultanate’s roads by

offering one lucky person the chance to drive away in a stunning Peugeot 206 sedan. Customers just had to participate in a short safety quiz after filling up with Shell Regular or Super petrol for just Rials 3 at Shell stations across Oman. After two months and thousands of entries in an effort to support road safety the lucky winner Satish Kumar was rewarded with the fabulous Peugeot sedan. Now, that’s what we’d like to call ‘cause and reward’!

EPITOME OF LUXURYWe liked this! In a recent event held at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel, select journalists and customers were given a unique opportunity to drive the epitome of luxurious, sophisticated and innovative automotive engineering – the Rolls Royce Ghost and Phantom. The Ghost was the true star of the event, although the Phantom is just as alluring, and is a car that one would much rather drive than be driven in. Like all Rolls Royce models, the Ghost is a vision of simplicity – of taking the core values of the brand and creating contemporary effortless luxury. Engine power is delivered in a manner which has become an engineering signature, seemingly effortlessly and endlessly. The Ghost embodies 21st-century Rolls-Royce: more than 100 years of engineering and design excellence expressed in modern and uncompromised style.

The Nuxe Merveillance range is available at Muscat Pharmacy.

ART ATTACKA novel creative concept is in town. And the first in the series is already a huge hit. We are talking of Khayaali, a series of monthly events dedicated to showcasing works of local artists, whether they be writers, photographers, or visual artists being held at the Ubhar Restaurant at Bareeq Al Shatti. The brainchild of local writers and friends, Rym Aoudia and Priyanka Sacheti, Khayaali arose out of an eager need for a platform in Muscat where artists could display their work and engage with interested individuals. The debut event on May 18 saw American poet, Brady Riddle, reading his poetry aloud while Omani photographer, Ahmed Al Shukaili, talked on photography. To know more about ‘Khayaali’ and to be part of the event, please contact [email protected] for further details.

TIMELESS TRADITIONYou must check out the new Tudor Heritage Chrono, a timely addition to the Tudor Sport collection. It is inspired by the celebrated Tudor Oysterdate Chronograph of the early ’70s. The 2010 model mirrors the original shape and proportions of the middle case, bezel, lugs and bracelet of the ’70s model. But a closer look reveals a series of new and beautifully executed design details. The dial, available in either grey on black or black on grey, is enhanced with stunning orange details and features 3-D appliqué. With a 42mm case, the watch also boasts the reference 7033 bidirectional rotatable bezel, originally designed for the 1970s watch but never distributed. It comes with both a three-link solid steel bracelet with a new clasp and Tudor shield logo as well as a black, grey and orange fabric strap, with a newly-developed vintage– and seat belt-inspired buckle. Contact Khimji’s Watches for further deatails.

X FACTORHere’s a new whiff you can try in the summer. Jean Paul Gaultier’s Classique receives a successor in the Classique X. Inspired by Gaultier’s Winter 2010 Prêt-a-Porter collection, the concoctions contains hesperidia notes with accents of mandarin and bergamot, the heart is floral with orange blossom and peony notes and sensual base of iris and vanilla. Classique X is available as 50 and

100ml EDT, in flacons made of matt glass with a transparent X

stretching over body of the flacon, while its outer carton is coloured in black with beige details and logo

of the brand. Neck of the flacon features an X pendant. It is a fragrance for both the day and night. Pick up your bottle at

LIFESTYLEUNIQUE CONFLUENCEIt was a fashion extravaganza that brought forth a unique blend of the East and the West. Oriental traditions met Western fashion at an exclusive fashion show that showcased the creations of Japanese designs Hanae Mori at the Al Bustan Palace InterContinental Hotel recently. The show titled ‘East Meets West’ was organised under the patronage of Her Highness Sayyida Aliya bint Thuwaini bin Shihab Al Said by the Saud Bahwan Group in association with the Japanese Embassy. Held to commemorate the celebration of the 40th anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s Renaissance, the event presented some of the most stunning creations of the Japanese designer, who has received the ‘Order of Culture’ in Japan in 1996 and was also named ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ in France in 2002. Cosmeticians and hairstylists for the models were provided by Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido.

Healthyimagination is one corporate’s initiative focused on continuously developing innovations to reduce costs, increase access and improve quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery around the world. We are talking of GE Healthcare, the $17 billion unit of General Electric Company that provides transformational medical technologies and services that are shaping a new age of patient care. Last month, the company held a Middle East Media Summit at Abu Dhabi to highlight regional trends and role of strategic partnerships in healthcare delivery. The event will feature a detailed overview of the state of healthcare in the region, as well as a comprehensive review of new technologies that

can help address pressing healthcare issues.“Today, tangible changes in healthcare delivery are led by public and private partnerships that are focused on earlier healthcare. It is an accepted fact that rising healthcare costs can be managed if diseases are diagnosed earlier and treatment options provided when they can be more effective. The summit further explored this through discussions on partnership building and performance solutions,” said Aziz Koleilat, general manager of GE Healthcare for the Middle East.Experts from leading healthcare organisations across the region discussed trends in healthcare including new innovations,

the importance of research and development and how regional private-public partnerships can drive this forward. The eminent panel of experts at the summit included Dr. Tarig S. Khuwaitir, Saudi Ministry of Health; Haider Khan, Business Development, Etisalat – Health and Hospitality; Dr. Nouralhuda Karmani, Head of Breast Imaging Unit, Al Sabah Hospital Kuwait and others.

TAKING OFFThis is another significant achievement for the national carrier. Oman Air, last month launched its new service between Muscat, and Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE marking its 34th destination worldwide. Oman Air now operates daily flights between Muscat and Ras Al Khaimah. A high-level delegation from Oman Air, led by Oman Air’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Hill along with the senior management team attended the airline’s launch celebrations at Ras Al Khaimah airport. The new air service is all set to tap a potential market in which Ras Al Khaimah will be used as a strategic location for people to use Muscat as a link to other destinations in the subcontinent and Europe. It would also provide services to the adventurists and tourists for weekend trips between the two cities.

GOOD DEALAn agreement was signed recently between Oman Arab Bank & Zain Property Development at the head office of Oman Arab Bank in Ruwi, in the presence of Rashad Al-Shaikh from the bank and Mish’al Mohd Abdullah Moosa, Managing Director of Zain Property Development. FOR A CAUSEInternationally renowned designers united in solidarity with ‘Madrasati Palestine’, an initiative by Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan that aims to combat the deteriorating state of education in East Jerusalem by renovating and enhancing the physical and learning environment of disadvantaged schools. The exclusive Salon Privé held at The Chedi, Muscat showcased the latest Spring / Summer 2010 Collections from Kenzo, Givenchy and Rami Al Ali Couture. Kenzo’s Sahara-inspired collection featured free, fluid lines with a mix and match of loose-fitting superpositions in vibrant colors of orange, fuchsia and turquoise with purplish-blues and acidic greens. The Givenchy Spring Collection also drew inspiration from vintage prints of North African women, whose richly embellished, gracefully draped garments were the starting point for the season’s exotic and romantic reverie. For his latest couture collection, Rami Al Ali selected ‘Carmen’ from the self-titled French opéra comique by Georges Bizet, as his muse. Rami chose fabrics to match Carmen’s sharp character and evident charisma. The event was supported by The Chedi, Muscat, Soiree, Dubai’s first high-end, multi-brand Pakistani boutique, Rami Al Ali Couture, Givenchy, Kenzo, Jumbo Electronics, Designer General Trading and TRACCS Public Relations.

cover story

It’s June... and not just another June in another year. With the FIFA

Soccer World Cup 2010 getting underway on the 11th of this month, there’s competition hotting up for many women out there.

And it comes in the form of a football, unbridled cheering, late nights staring at the TV screen to the resounding cries of a ‘goal’ for one whole month! It’s a time when we’d like to think men, even fully-grown hunks, become boys at the mere mention of the sport. And to think the competition for your man comes in the form of several other men!

As the July madness kicks into high gear, there are many women who will bear the brunt of this soccer-induced male frenzy. Women whose husbands are soccer fanatics will feel neglected and abandoned. And if you are not into the sport, you will get into classic ‘soccer widow’ mode. There will be annoyance and resentment, frayed tempers and most terrible of them all, playing second fiddle to the family television.

All in the Game!

Men love their football... and women resent the time their men spend on it! So with the FIFA World Cup around the corner... what do women feel? Al Mar’a takes a light-hearted look...

Page 21: Al Mara - English - June 2010

19JUNE 2010

Believe us; the numbers of such women all over the world is huge. And the scene is the same in Oman too. Al Mar’a speaks to a few women on the soccer madness soon to be unleashed upon us. Here are a few of their responses, light-hearted and some definitely tongue-in-cheek!

NORMAL FOOTBALL MANIA

“Although I know it’s not the case, I have the impression that the World Cup seems to come round with regular monotony

and a lot more often than once every four years. With a husband and two sons all interested in the game I expect to be subjected to the normal football mania that such events stir up. No doubt there will be endless discussions about the ‘wrong’ decisions made by referees and fruitless rehashing of moments that go on to separate the winners from the losers. Matches will be analysed before they have started, will be picked apart at half-time and finally scrutinised from every angle after the final whistle has blown. I can’t wait.

As my husband is French and I am English, my sons have the luxury of supporting two teams in the cup and they usually happily switch between the countries depending upon which side is giving the better performance. Fortunately for me, I will not be twiddling my thumbs or watching many games as Nawras is launching its fixed services including home broadband, and this will be keeping me busy and giving me something much more interesting than football to focus my thoughts and time on!”Julie Amann

SLIGHT CHANGE OF THINGS“I am excited and proud to say that the FIFA World Cup is being hosted in my beautiful country but a tad disappointed as I will be missing the Beckhams as they wine and dine in Cape Town’s finest restaurants (and shop till Victoria breaks a heel) with rest of the world’s hottest footballers. I suppose if the soccer event was being hosted anywhere else in the world the exception of ‘FIFA Frenzy’ in my house would not be as encouraged, but because it’s taking place in my home town, I suppose that slightly changes things.

Instead of joining the festivities in SA that would include rallying the troops and heading to a stylish spot to mingle and support the SA team, it’s going to be spent at home watching from the flat screen. The 11th June is diarised when Bafana Bafana (SA’s national soccer team) will kickstart the games first playing Mexico that will then follow with soccer world champions Uruguay and then France… a bit of pressure, maybe.

Nevertheless, our Bafana T-shirts will be strutted with a good ol’ South African braai in order to enhance the festivities by keeping it real. Laduma!”Sherrin Davie

MAKEOVER TIME“Well, the time is hurtling towards me at breakneck speed when I get from being the queen of my own home to the barely tolerated out of favour second wife. This four-yearly event called by all those crazy people who love to see 22 grown up men chase a ball risking injuries and their lives, the FIFA World Cup, leave many like me to experience the less than appealing life of a woman bereft of her husband. For the next one month it’s going to be a competition in my house too... Lionel Messi, eye catching outfits, the Brazilian teams samba... hey, I’ve even learned a few samba moves

myself after the last World Cup. So as my hubby dear gets ready with his match schedules and fixtures I am arming myself with a total makeover. Sophiya Priya

ENJOYING THE MAN-FREE PERIOD“I imagine I’m pretty high up in the pecking order of soccer widows for this World Cup. My husband Maurizio being from Italy, whose national team are of course the reigning Campiones del Mundo. Casting my mind back four years I recall an awful lot of flag-based merchandise in our house, as well as the inevitable testosterone and tension. Maybe as reigning champions, we can rest on our laurels a bit and enjoy the tournament for what it is; easier to do as an expat in Oman, as you can watch pretty

much each game with someone from the country competing. Even amid the stress of watching Italy climb higher and higher last time around, I had a great time taking in the matches (with half an eye, anyway) with friends from Argentina, Australia and Germany. The Italian team being filled with passionate and handsome men did help somewhat too. If you can’t enjoy the matches, getting organised to fill the time might make things a bit more bearable for all soccer widows; this could be the perfect opportunity to have some me-time or to catch up with friends. Definitely don’t use this man-free period to do anything practical or you’ll end up filled with football resentment. ”Susan Proctor

THREE’S A CROWD! “Lady Diana once said, “There are three people in this relationship.” I complain of the same. While I do not share my husband’s passion with another woman, I share it with a much larger rival, namely the game of football.

As if it isn’t bad enough being married to a hotel manager whose business is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Here we go, here we go, here we go… not again! If it’s not the Premiership, the Bundesliga, UEFA Cup or Champions League, it must be World Cup time again… where did these four years go? It seems like only yesterday he was dragging me to a

JUNE 201020

A WELCOME CHANGE“The World Cup only comes once every four years but that’s four years too soon for lots of women. Often referred to as ‘football widows’, we lose our husbands, boyfriends and sons to hours spent in front of the TV with their friends agonising over the game, the players and of course the score!

It always makes me laugh when you listen to a group of men watching a game as suddenly they are all experts in football, and by all accounts should be the next England manager! I, however, tend to look upon the whole thing as a great opportunity to spend more time doing the things I love, like catching up with girl friends, visiting the salon and of course shopping. Now I can spend as long as I want trawling the mall without the huffing, puffing and moaning that men seem to do so well.

As long as they have the remote, a pizza and a football game on the TV they are in their element! They also can’t see what you’re spending on the credit card so as far as I’m concerned, the sooner the World Cup arrives, the better ‘bring it on’.Julia Rowley

IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ‘EM, DO YOUR OWN THING

Here’s how you can beat the men at their ‘own game’ by taking some time out for yourself.

Catch up with some old friends over lunch or dinner.

Try new recipes and invite friends over while the guys are watching football.

Plan a spa day and pamper yourself. Make it an all-women’s outing!

Use your free time to shop till you drop. It’s called getting back with his ‘Visa Card’!

WHEELING A DEAL“Scene one: A new bride at home, waiting for my husband to come home to dinner. Scene two: My first anniversary spent in front of the television screen at a watering hole absorbing the fact that there will be no candles, despite the darkness or

no romantic meal despite a table and of course no talking as I would be disturbing him staring at the big screen he couldn’t have done without. Four years into my marriage I’m still getting used to the fact that, my husband has chosen his first love over me; Football! The dreaded word crops up every year and I go about making elaborate plans on how to smash the television screen in and he still ends up going out to watch the game. On the flip side, we have now struck a deal, he watches a match and I have full control and use of his credit card; nothing a lot of retail therapy cannot solve.”Bosky Dutia Varghese

And Muscat-based football widow Eirian Hasler sends a heartfelt plea to the England team manager Fabio Capello

“Please Fabio – change your mind now if you care about the so-called ‘beautiful’ game.

With one small decision earlier this year you ensured that hundreds, if not thousands, of football widows like myself will have absolutely no interest at all in that little tournament which your overpaid prima donnas are playing in South Africa next month. Thanks to you June 11 is the start of a period of pure, mind-numbing boringness.

But Fabio, you could change all that! You could have me following the news from South Africa with bated breath – and this news would not be relegated to the back pages. It would be on the front page, and would generate more column inches that anything your boys could ever hope for - short of actually winning the Cup of course.

Yes, I’m talking about the only interesting thing about the England team – the WAGS – the wives and girlfriends of the players. Who could forget the fun, colour and interest they generated four years ago at the World Cup in Germany? What were they wearing? Where did they shop? What

did they buy? Who flew home to get her hair done? Who was in tears and why? Do they like one another? Who won’t talk to who? Who’s the Queen Wag and who’s just a wannabe? The questions are never-ending and each day brought a new revelation and outfit which could make or break a reputation – oh bliss!

Forget goals, off-sides and blind referees – what is important in the World Cup is hair extensions, false nails and tasteless fashion. Fabio are you listening?”

Fluorescent coloured balls, a score screen and focus is all one needs to get a hang of this game. Of course, you need a top class bowling alley

as well. And if you have a set of friends to hang out with, it makes the experience even more worthwhile.

Bowling is fun. That’s the general feeling one gets at a bowling centre. Take the Al Masa Centre Bowling Centre for instance. During weekends, the place is packed with a number of young girls and women trying their hand at the recreational sport. You are greeted with squeals of delight or sighs of disappointment, but the excitement of taking to a new sport is palpable.

The same is the case at Muscat’s other bowling centre as well. City Bowling Centre hasf also spawned a vibrant bowling culture.

The best part about bowling is that there is nothing like ‘prior experience’ or that you need to be good at it. Of course, loads of practice is required if one wants to get into the competitive mode but if you are into

the game for the fun of it, it’s also a great way to unwind.

On a particular Thursday morning, we were surprised to see a huge group of women and children at the Al Masa Bowling Centre. Our curiosity got the better of us and we politely enquired whether it was a huge celebration of sorts. Yes, they said in unison, it was a celebration, a day away from home, a special ‘us-time’ for them. Most of them were bowling for the first time and seemed to be enjoying the experience a great deal.

The place is fast becoming a favourite with the corporate crowd too. One Wednesday evening, we bumped into an enthusiastic group of young men and women competing against each other.

“I am bowling after two whole years. It’s great to be here as part of my office group. It is a wonderful team-building exercise and encourages healthy competition in an atmosphere of fun and relaxation.

Girls in Oman are taking to bowling in a big way. Rekha Baala and Sharanya Retnakumar find out what draws them to the game…

BowledOVER!

Page 25: Al Mara - English - June 2010

We are actually planning to do this often,” says Lakshmi Nair of Alshall International.

Samira Mohammed of GAC is also here for a ‘corporate’ reason. She is practising for a tournament happening that weekend. “This is my first time at the bowling centre. I came here because of my friends and colleagues. It is great fun to be here with them. I now plan to come often and hopefully the tournament will go off well,” she says.

The spirit of competition also runs high among the girls here in the city. In March, the Al Masa Bowling Centre saw girls and women at their competitive best at the 5th Oman Bowling Competition. The question here was not about winning or losing, but about bonding and making new friends. Young Omani girls were barely able to conceal their glee with the knockdown of each pin and a strike out was welcomed with the unabashed cheering only the young can muster.

The ladies from Nawras took the first place in the tournament where nine different organisations competed in the thrilling competition organised by the Women’s Sports Department of the Ministry of Sports. Team B, the winners from Nawras was captained by Manal Al Kiyumi, the Nawras customer service management coordinator.

When questioned about the secret of the girls’ success, Manal said, “We took the same fantastic team spirit we have in our everyday work at Nawras and added a big dose of determination to succeed. We were persistent to the end and our relentless persistence and firm focus paid off. I am very proud of all the team and delighted that together our efforts gained us first place. The team is now ready for the next challenge.”

So it’s evident that whether it’s for building team spirit, relaxation or fun, bowling has certainly caught on in a big way in Oman.

So ladies, those of you who haven’t got onto it already, it’s about time… to make the first strike!

bb

DID YOU KNOW THAT BOWLING BRINGS WITH ITS OWN SET OF HEALTH BENEFITS TOO?

* Merely walking along the lane, while attempting to make a strike or a spare is enough excerise for your legs. Also as you swing around to hit the pins, the flexing and stretching provides adequate exercise for your tendons, joints, ligaments and muscles in the arms.

* Bowling also burns fat because your muscles flex, turn and twist in every swinging motion.

* Bowling builds social relationships and helps reduce emotional stress.

superstar

Actress, diva, and role model, Zoe Saldana has rocketed to fame from her humble beginnings in a Latino family in New Jersey to stardom in the most

successful film of all time, Avatar.

In no time at all, she has become a household name; not just because of her exemplary acting but for her pragmatic yet stylish fashion sense. The only thing she isn’t is (shockingly) a professional model! But as Zoe has proven time and time again, you don’t need a modelling agency to make your mark and stand out from the crowd.

Zoe Saldana was born on June 19, 1978 in New Jersey, United States, to a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother, and was raised in the

tough neighbourhood of Queens in New York. At the age of 10, she moved to the Dominican Republic, where she studied ballet at one of the most prestigious dancing schools in the region. She stayed on in the Dominican Republic for seven years. Even today, when speaking of her multi-racial background, Saldana says, “I’m Dominican, Lebanese, Indian, Irish, and Jamaican. But I hate going into that. I just say, ‘I’m from Queens.”

When Zoe returned to New York, she was recruited by a talent agency, and before she knew it, her exceptional ballet skills had landed her in her first role on the big screen as a headstrong ballet dancer in the 2000 film, Centre Stage.

But this was just the beginning. Zoe acted in a rapid succession of films from 2000 onwards, from the charming security officer in The Terminal to the furious female pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean. Today, her career is booming. She recently acted in the Oscar-nominated Star Trek, where she admitted a geeky side to her, “I’m very proud to say I am a geek. But I’m kind of a cool geek. I grew up in a very sci-fi home so I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi movies, from Dune to Alien, 2001, ET, Batteries Not Included... All these films I go crazy for. But never Star Trek.”

She has also starred in arguably one of the most famous movies in history — Avatar. However, Zoe determinedly denies that her ethnicity has helped her secure certain roles. “I don’t understand labels. I don’t need anybody to tell me I’m Latina or black or anything else. I’ve played characters that were written for Caucasian females, I just want to be given the same consideration as everybody else, and so far that has been happening.”

Zoe prefers playing strong female lead characters. Says she about her character in Avatar, “I will say that my Avatar character, Neytiri, has been the most challenging of my entire career — physically, mentally, and spiritually.

It’s the first time I played a non-human, I had to learn a different language, and it was hard to part with her at the end. No matter how intense other characters have been, I’ve only been in their skins for at most four months — never a year and a half.”

Along with Zoe’s growing career there’s also blossomed an impeccable sense of style... She is always seen wearing the best dresses on the red carpet. Many who saw her sporting a purple Givenchy at the 82nd Oscars this year agree that she is quite a trend-setter, and definitely knows how to get noticed! Hey, she even looked good as the blue alien in Avatar!

But what’s surprising is that Zoe hates makeup, and prefers the natural look, “I feel self-conscious when

superstar

Page 29: Al Mara - English - June 2010

I have make-up on. It just doesn’t feel like it’s part of me. I feel my most confident when I am at my most natural. However, I do have my days when I want to do something dramatic, whether it be really dark, dark eyes or dark lipstick. I love red lipstick.”

The young beauty is very proud of her black heritage, “When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, “Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?” (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don’t understand it, and it’s the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, “Yo soy una mujer negra.” (“I am a black woman.”) [They go, on] “Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita.” (“Oh no, you are ‘dark-skinned’”) I’m like, “No! Let’s get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra.” (“I am a black woman.”)

As for the future? She says, “I love aging. Why would I want to be 21 for the rest of my life? Glamour is about feeling good in your own skin.” And that the beauty feels good in her skin can be seen in all the glowing photographs of her. Her glowing chocolate skin, almond-shaped eyes and tall slender figure have men everywhere drooling at her feet. Yes, we can all certainly be assured Zoe will continue to look stunning, no matter what her age, and will remain an inspiration to us all.

Zoe was also rated No. 42 on the Maxim magazine Hot 100 of 2008 list and was chosen as one of People Magazine’s annual 100 Most Beautiful People in the World, Beauty at Every Age section, in May 2007.

Zoe’s fame has definitely increased exponentially over the past few years. Thanks to the international exposure as the emotional lead alien in Avatar that has had women over the world wishing they were blue enough (no pun intended) to be paired with Sam Worthington!

She’ll sure have movie deals lined up at her door for years to come. But what’s Zoe’s personal aim for the next ten years? “I want to be the best daughter, sister, friend and wife I can possibly be — because when I die, I am not going to be buried with my Oscar. I want to love life.” Well, if not the Oscar, may be that stunning purple Givenchy dress?

We look forward to seeing her in many more awesome films in the future. This is one rising star that’s certainly going places, so keep an eye on her!

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: A four-hand massage is a type of massage therapy which involves two therapists working simultaneously, creating a choreographed massage.

During the most classic form of four-hand massage, the therapists mirror each other, with one therapist taking the lead while the other follows. The therapists usually use Swedish style massage techniques, combining long, slowing strokes with other techniques which are designed

to relax the body. Typically clients can request special attention for one area of the body, such as the back or legs, and the therapists can tailor the session to the needs of the client.

In other cases, each therapist may focus on a specific area of the body during a four-hand massage, with one working on the upper body and one working on the lower body. Four hand massage can also combine massage techniques, with one therapist doing reflexology while another giving a Swedish style massage, for example.

Many people enjoy four-hand massage

because they find it extremely relaxing, and they enjoy the sensation of being pampered by two massage therapists. It can take some time to get used to, as the sensation is very different from regular massage and it requires good communication between the client and therapists.

OUR VERDICT: A totally relaxing and rejuvenating massage. The effect is hypnotic and trance-like. Recommended at least once a month!

ATP KERATOXCosmetology Middle East, the source of ‘never seen before’ anti-aging products, has launched ATP Keratox, the newest most effective way of addressing the signs of ageing without the discomfort and expense of injections. ATP Keratox has the enhanced effect of relaxing wrinkles in the area it is applied to, instead of paralysing it like other treatments. This ensures more natural expressions can be preserved. The active ingredient is ‘Argireline’. Keratox can be applied to delicate areas unsuitable for Botox. It is applied with pressure to areas of concern such as: under the eyes, above lips, between eyebrows, neck, forehead and for treating unsightly ‘crows feet’. Results are usually dramatic, fine lines and wrinkles may be reduced by up to 33 per cent in two weeks and by as much as 55 per cent in four weeks. This is why some people refer to it as ‘Botox in a bottle’.

What started out as a small establishment with only five kindergarten students has

flourished into one of the more prominent schools with a good 670 students. Azzan Bin Qais International School is one of the few schools in the Sultanate that provides a unique blend of International as well as traditional studies to Omani students. The school prides itself in providing a caring and disciplined environment that ensures the overall development of each and every student.

One of the most sought after schools in Oman, ABQ provides its students the option to give the international exams including IGCSEs. One of the main advantages of studying at ABQ is that students who decide to give the international exams are not required to attend foundation courses at universities abroad. Unlike most international schools, ABQ strongly focuses on the Islamic studies and Arabic modules. According to Angel Hillan, Head of School, “Usually in schools, the

international aspect takes centre and the traditional subjects are pushed aside. However, we are keen on ensuring that the Islamic studies remain at the centre of what we offer.”

The medium of instruction at the school is bilingual and depends on the subjects being taught: English in the case of subjects like Mathematics and Sciences and Arabic for Islamic and Social Studies and Arabic Language. The non-academic subjects like P.E., I.T., Art and Music are taught mainly in English. The teaching staff at ABQ belong to a diverse range of nations including, but not limited to, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, America, Jordan, Syria and Egypt.ABQ is now continuing in the same direction but with a much broader balanced curriculum. Not only are they planning on modifying the curriculum to incorporate new subjects, but they are also focusing on co curricular activities like sports and arts. Currently, ABQ offers English, Arabic, Arts and Sciences but is

now looking at introducing other subjects like Geography, Design and Economics. Students have also expressed their interest in learning European Languages like French and Spanish and that might be incorporated into the curriculum as well. Apart from academics, there’s also been a strong focus on non-academic subjects like arts, music and PE. In the near future these will be introduced at the exam level. This is being done to ensure that students not only learn these but also obtain an international qualification at the same time. For instance, students may opt to give the ICDL (International Computer Driving License) which is an extremely useful qualification to have and a pre-requisite for many careers today.

For the coming academic year, significant changes are being made to the schools facilities and infrastructure. The science laboratories (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) will be up and running as well as a new Art Studio. Sport facilities are also being developed to include a swimming pool, basketball, volleyball and badminton courts.

Schools are not measured by their academic standards alone and the faculty at ABQ believe in developing children

in all aspects and not only the academic side. The school has ensured that there’s always someone in the school who knows the students well and performs a pastoral role. Says Hillan, “Students at ABQ are very strongly disciplined and our rules are strict. We train our students to be good citizens and make them aware of what’s right and what’s not. We do what we can as a family to help out children. Parents are also encouraged to talk to the teachers freely should any problems arise.” Recently, there has been a small influx of non-Arabic speaking students in the school. Hence, ABQ is also looking into catering to more students of other nationalities.

Yet another key area that the school is focusing on, is student involvement. ABQ is trying to involve the students in decision processes that directly affect them and now have a Student Council for the very first time.

Students at ABQ have successfully gone on to study in prestigious universities all across the globe including United Kingdom, Qatar, Malaysia and New Zealand and are a testament to the fine standards of this unique educational establishment.

It’s not quite ‘beads of perspiration dripping off my neck’ weather yet, but it’s

getting there. At the moment we’re living through those few blissful months which make us want to book

tickets for romantic comedies in the cinema and tentatively don bright-

coloured summer dresses.

How does the modern day fashionista dress for summer though? Sigh, the joys of summer dressing are endless, and the tips are easy and simple to follow. Here are some simple rules and tips that’ll have you looking cool and breezy all summer long:

Wear Prints: This summer, don’t go for solid colours. Though, we’ll be the

first to admit, a solid yellow can look amazing, prints are all the rage this summer, so don’t miss out. Pair a cute little printed mini skirt with a casual white tank top and sandals; you’re good to go for the day. The print glams up your outfit and adds colour to your clothes. Alternatively, you can also try pairing a printed or tie dyed shirt with white slacks for that yacht party look. Pairing prints with solids add a touch of bohemia and can also be a whole lotta fun to wear. Also pairing printed summer dresses with belts or just a cute pair of feather earrings can also look great!

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes: Summer is every girl’s best friend. Why? It means you can bring your old favourite flats and sandals out of that corner they were delegated to during the winter months. Peep toe sandals, open backed flats and just plain flip flops are some of the many comfortable options you have, in terms of shoe wear, during the

upcoming hot months. Not only are these a comfortable alternative to heels, but they also allow you to show off your new pedicure!

Go Natural: This summer, try working the nude look – make-up wise. That’s right; caking your face with foundation will do little to help that cool look you’re hoping to acquire. A little sunscreen, some mascara, plain lip gloss and perhaps a hint of blush will have guys falling at your feet. Tie your hair up in a cute messy bun and you’re good to go! The ‘no make-up’ look adds innocence to your look and also avoids you worrying about whether or not your face is melting in the hot sun!

Out With the Old: Everybody has favourite summer clothes that they take out every summer and don proudly. Maybe it’s a comfortable shirt or a dress you practically grew up in and still manage to fit into. This summer though, learn to let go. You may not release it, but your favourite pair of summer flats or that cotton blue shirt you’ve had forever, is just too old now. We’re sure it’s super comfy but chances are that it’s a little outdated now, and more than a little frayed. If you can’t quite bring yourself to throw it away, relegate it to a corner in your old cupboard so it reminds you of summer times gone by, but don’t, don’t wear it. This summer, make new favourites — clothes wise. Chances are,

we’ll be asking you to let them go in few years time!

Wear Sunscreen: How could we forget every doctor’s favourite mantra? Wear sunscreen! This is good for your skin and prevents sunburn. A lot of women don’t like wearing sunscreen because it gives a greasy look, or sometimes, artificially whitens your face. This can be prevented though by choosing some of the good brands in the market which are specially formulated to avoid these troubles. Make sure your sunscreen is SPF 30 at least and that you apply it at least 20 minutes before leaving the house. Trust us on this one. Do you want to spend summer with ugly red rashes covering your skin?

Skirt the Issue: Skirts instantly lend a softer look to your outfit. Stock up on all sorts of skirts; short ones, knee length ones and full length ones. They give you room to move around in, let the air in (!) and look incredibly cute. We’re not saying give up on pants all together, but girls, learn to get in touch with your feminine side!

The Classics: Most of all, remember thy basics. A pair of cut off jeans, capris and just a plain tee can go a long way in reminding you of what summer is really all about — comfort! Remember to drink lots of fluids and get that new swim suit you’ve been eyeing for a while now in the store window. Go out

for frappachino’s and iced coffee with your friends and simply have a

whale of a time!

New Zealand comprises two main islands, the North and the South Island as well as a few smaller ones, and the

whole nation is roughly about the size of Italy. But don’t be fooled by its size, there are a million things to do and to see.

Our journey begins from the north, that is, the subtropical Northland region well known for its pristine, expansive coastlines. It is said that no matter where you travel to, in Northland you are never more than 40 minutes from the sea. And since the waters are relatively warmer, it is ideal for activities like deep sea diving, snorkelling, surfing, kayaking and the likes. Swim with the dolphins or explore the region by following the trails through uninhabited forests or simply relax in a yacht and soak up the sun. Mount Manaia in the Whangarei District is the remnant of a 22-million-year-old volcano and a must-see. When you climb the summit, make sure you have your camera to take shots of the breathtaking panoramic views. The Bay of Islands is most popular for fishing and sailing and not to be missed if you want some adventure. From dune riding to dolphin

discovery – there’s something in it for all kinds of thrill seekers.

Our next stop, Auckland, is locally known as ‘the maiden with a hundred suitors’, and we’re definitely not questioning why. From beautiful beaches to savvy shopping outlets, Auckland has it all. Being the hub of multiculturalism, Auckland is the ultimate destination for foodies and art enthusiasts alike. Make sure you try the ‘Pacific Rim’ cuisine, a style that incorporates Asian and Pacific flavours. From Auckland, hop over to the Coromandel Peninsula – New Zealand’s most popular holiday destination. The Hot Water Beach is a must-see. Enjoy a unique natural experience where thermal heat rises through the sand and heats up the water to give rise to hot water springs. NZ basically straddles two tectonic plates and also belongs to the Pacific ‘ring of fire’. As hazardous as this may sound, it has ultimately led to some mind blowing geothermal areas with reputed health benefits. A three- hour drive from Auckland is the town of Rotorua, our next destination and a key centre for geothermal tourist activity. Hundreds of tourists flock to Rotorua to exclusively check out the mud pools, hot springs, volcanic terraces and geysers. Whakarewarewa, Waimangu, Waiotapu, Hells Gate and the Hidden Valley are the most popular among tourists. Apart from this, Rotorua is a great place to try out Zorbing (which actually originated in Rotorua), rafting, kayaking, and sledging – all in all a great list of activities for an awesome adventure packed holiday! Often overlooked, Rotorua is also considered the heartland of Maori culture. Don’t forget to take some time out and try out carving or weaving or singing and dancing in some Maori shows.

Any travelogue would be incomplete without the mention of NZ’s National Parks and Tongariro National Park (a World Heritage Area) is the main attraction in the Ruapehu region. The park protects three of New Zealand’s most dramatic natural assets - the active andesitic volcanoes Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, and provides a spectacular hiking experience (including the famous Tongariro crossing). Do skiing and snowboarding on an active volcano sound like your thing? Then the Turoa and Whakapapa ski areas on Mount Ruapehu is the destination for you! Boasting of world class facilities and a staggering range of ski runs – there is something for everyone (first timers included).

New Zealand has some incredible wildlife. Its isolation from the mainland millions of years ago have resulted in the evolution of some unique flora and fauna, including some direct descendants of prehistoric wildlife. And the place to

enjoy NZ’s fauna is the small town of Kaikoura in the South Island. Time stands still in this scenic little town. Be it whale or dolphin watching, swimming with the seals or enjoying the bird life, we promise you, you’ll never be the same again. If you truly want to explore the area, try a bike, or on horseback, or – if you’re the more adventurous kind – a llama! The ultimate destination for eco-tourism is Akaroa, our next stop. Get up close and personal with the playful Hector’s dolphins or enjoy a peaceful kayak ride and get to observe the White-flipped penguins at the Pohatu Marine Reserve.

Akaroa is truly a nature lover’s paradise. Mount Cook National Park is another World Heritage site and comprises breathtaking journeys across snow-capped mountains. The Ball Pass is a challenging three-day alpine crossing of the Mount Cook Range and allows close views of New Zealand’s highest mountains.

Our final stop is Queenstown. If you have a bucket-list, then we’re sure you’ll be crossing out at least a few from your list after your visit to Queenstown. Skydiving, bungee jumping, jet-boating, canyon swinging, parapenting, heli-skiing – the

list of activities is virtually endless. And if you’re a recovering shopaholic, then please be warned – Queenstown is every shopper’s dream come true. Designer brands, local boutiques, thrift stores – there’s room for everything. Shops are open all day and most of the evening 365 days a year. Queenstown is arguably the best place in the world to buy traditional wool and sheepskin clothing and indigenous Pounamu (greenstone). In Arrowtown you’ll find a unique shopping atmosphere along historic Buckingham Street - boutique and specialty stores offering exquisite hand-made chocolates, premier clothing, local wines, fine arts and local crafts including jade, crystal and gold.

Anytime is a good time to visit New Zealand. The country enjoys a temperate climate – which means mild temperatures, moderate rainfall and plenty of sunshine. But before you start packing, remember that you will be visiting a country in the southern hemisphere where the coldest month is July and the warmest, January! What are you waiting for? It’s time to experience all things Kiwiana!

Growing up in South-East Queensland in Australia was to me the perfect place to spend my childhood

and early adult years. My home city is Brisbane, situated between the Sunshine Coast in the North and the Gold Coast in the South. For me, when I think of ‘home’ I think of the home I knew during my teen and university years mainly. The images that come to mind are those of long, lazy and humid Brisbane summers.

Memories are of hot summer mornings walking to school, catching the train to the city to meet up with friends, sitting on the verandah watching storm clouds roll in and then listening to the sound of the rain on the tin roofs of ‘Queenslanders’-

the iconic Brisbane house, at night. The pace of life in Brisbane is generally relaxed and although the city has seen immense growth in recent years, people still take time out to enjoy. The outdoors lifestyle takes a place of pride in Queensland. A perfect weekend in Brisbane would mean breakfast in one of the many outdoor cafes, followed by exploring some of the city’s more cultural neighbourhoods which are filled with galleries, boutiques, markets, and restaurants.

As Brisbane is a multicultural city, there is an abundance of international cuisine to be savoured. South-East Asian cuisine and in particular Thai and Vietnamese food are popular in Brisbane, as they suit

the warm climate. At night, people flock to certain hubs around town such as ‘The Valley’, one of the oldest parts of the city, filled with restaurants and night spots where people spill out onto the streets until the early hours. The Valley is a hub for the ‘live music’ scene, and there are some world famous bands that started off playing there before they were discovered globally. Of course the iconic ‘Backyard BBQ’ prevails in Brisbane too. A favourite pastime is having family and friends over for a relaxed dinner on the deck, the smell of grilled steak and frangipani flowers mingling in the night air.

Summer holidays in Brisbane see people travelling either to the beaches in the North or the South of the city. As the

coast is only an hour by car, the beach plays a big part in people’s lifestyles. Whether it’s camping on a deserted stretch of sand away from it all, or staying in a beach house or resort, most people will frequent the coasts not only during summer holidays, but also on the weekends due to their proximity. Summer holidays during school meant three months of freedom with friends, as we explored different parts of the coast and went back to school the next year with stories to tell and tans to show off.

Later, I attended university on the Gold Coast, which is an hour by car south of Brisbane. This is where I lived for three years when I was studying. It meant trips down to the beach between classes,

parties in ramshackle old beach houses, and the relaxed pace of life that all students embrace.

For me now, the term ‘home’ takes on a different meaning, than it did at a younger age. Most of my friends, as is natural, have moved away from Brisbane to explore opportunities in different parts of Australia, or the world. My family is also quite scattered, with them all being in different parts of Queensland, and overseas. Muscat is of course the place where I now reside, but home really is where your family and friends can be found, the place where you feel most comfortable and where the people there know you better than anyone else. I think perhaps there is some truth in the saying

“A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it”, as it’s the people in our lives that mean the most.

Living overseas as an expatriate not only makes you appreciate new cultures and gives you a remarkable experience of a new country, but also makes you appreciate where you come from more than perhaps you once did, and lets you better understand yourself as a person and how you ‘fit’ into the world.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunities of living overseas and travelling, but I am always looking forward to meeting up with old friends and family again.

Page 46: Al Mara - English - June 2010

The first Oman Green Awards (OGA) awards function is being held on

World Environment Day to celebrate the achievements of organisations and individuals. OGA will give green groups a platform to create awareness, bring about concerted action through exchange of ideas, and propel others to come forth and participate in this social cause.

As the country’s first Environmental Awards, OGA has been created to awaken the eco-consciousness in every Omani citizen and resident. The ultimate aim is to motivate behavioural change and increase awareness in relation to the protection and preservation of our environment.

A large number of entries have been received, both from companies and individuals, in all the eight categories and the results will be announced at a grand function being held at Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa on June 5.

Speaking about the steady stream of entries, Alpana Roy, Executive Vice-President, United Media Services (UMS), said, “As a media house, UMS has a strength to get the ‘green message’ across and we feel it’s our responsibility to make sure it’s the right message. Therefore, as part of our corporate social responsibility, we are delighted to be driving this national platform to better popularise the initiatives of the companies, achievements and individuals of Oman, not only to celebrate these efforts but also to inspire others to make a contribution.”

Going by the number of entries received from companies and individuals for the OGA, it obviously means they understand that the role of businesses, institutions and individuals in environmental protection and preservation through responsible and sustainable consumption of natural resources cannot be discounted.

And the adoption of environmentally sound technologies, policies and practices is a must to protect the natural resource that we call our earth.

Working together, with a shared sense of mission, an eminent panel of judges have commenced the scrutiny of the many entries received for the eight categories of the OGA.

The judges include Ali Al Kiyumi, Director General for Nature Conservation from Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs; Dr Reginald Victor, Dean of Research, Sultan Qaboos University; Dr Salim Al Wahaibi, Director of the Environmental and Occupational Health Department, Ministry of Health; Mayank Singh, Group Editor-UMS and Editor, Oman Economic Review; and Nida El Helou, Consultant, Environment Society of Oman.

Speaking about the eminent panel of judges, Roy said, “We are indeed grateful that such luminaries have agreed to be part of the evaluation process. Now, it’s not just winning an award that will matter; we can also expect a large number of recommendations, on the way forward, to come out of the assessment of the various entries.”

The list of companies and organisations that are championing Oman’s green cause are now listed on the OGA website www.oeronline.com/greenawards.

Meanwhile, OGA’s Green Oman Partners include Bahwan Engineering Company-Carrier; Voltamp; Oman Oil Marketing Company; V-KOOL Oman; Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa; MB Petroleum; Panasonic Ideas for Life.

The support Partners are Majan Electricity, Oman Printers and Stationers, Times of Oman, Al Shabiba; Business International Group (BIG); Proscope Al Ansari and Oil & Gas Review.

Take care of the Earth and she will take care of you! Yes, the relationship between us and the environment is one of give-and-take.

As we celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, it’s also time to reiterate our commitment towards the green cause. This year, the theme is ‘Many Species. One Planet. One Future’. According to the United Nations Environment Programme website, it ‘echoes the urgent call to conserve the diversity of life on our planet. A world without biodiversity is a very bleak prospect. Millions of people and millions of species share the same planet, and only together can we enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.”

Celebrating World Environment Day is also about taking action to be part of a bigger solution. The first step towards this is to understand that going green is not as difficult as you think. And using less and acting more works in more than one way. It’s simple. Look around you... there are thousands of ways to incorporate the ‘green factor’ in your lives.

In our Environment Special, we present to you some interesting stuff; green gadgets, a roundup of the beautiful beaches in Oman, how to instill the ‘green sense’ in your children and more...

Get involved... And spread the message across.

The planet is our collective home and let’s face it - it’s about time we learnt to take care of it. Governments around the world

are currently focusing on the environment as the world wakes up to the fact that natural resources are fast running out. We hear inspirational stories of people around the world who are playing their part in making the world environmentally friendly. Consider for example, the role of eight-year-old Abdul Mugeeth, who made 150 paper bags out of newspapers and distributed them to grocery stores around Abu Dhabi. His message was simple; save the environment. As part of our duty to planet earth, we should also teach younger generations to go green. It’s easy for kids to carelessly discard paper, leave water running or forget to recycle in their haste to play the latest video game. Yet, going green doesn’t always have to be a bore. Kids can learn to save the planet in a fun way. And let’s not forget, all lessons begin at home!

Here are some tips that will ensure they will think twice before littering or leaving the water running for too long.

PLAY!I can’t remember a time without cell phones now. I don’t remember what we did without them! In the same way, younger kids can’t remember a time without video games. Often, they’ll look at older generations aghast and ask “You didn’t have Super Mario? How old are you?” Yes, the question stings, but it shouldn’t. The older generation played with marbles and climbed trees when they were younger. They spent the day outside getting muddy and splashing around. Too much TV was considered a ‘bad thing back in the day’. Kids should play outside, this will allow them to develop a sense of kinship with the environment. They will play underneath the shade of trees, learn to play football on beaches and lawns and swim in lakes. All of these will tell them how lovely it is to have these things to play in and how awful it would be if they were no longer there. Giving them a plant to take care of can also be a great way to increase environmental awareness.

ARTS AND CRAFTS Encourage your kids to draw, paint and make home-made projects. Not only does this foster creativity but it’s also an easy way of teaching them how to recycle. When they paint or draw, encourage them to use both sides of the paper. Home-made projects using old clothes, cans, bottles, hair pins can be a great way to develop a habit of re-using old things around the house!

SAVE ELECTRICITY Make it a point to tell kids to switch off lights when they leave a room. At night, make them help you unplug things like the iron and shut off TV’s, radios and computers. This will cultivate a habit in them of always being conscious of how much electricity is being used around the house.

SHOP TALESTeach by example. When you go to the grocery store, make sure you carry a jute bag and explain to your kids why exactly you’re doing so. Remind them that plastic bags are very bad for the environment. Also, when shopping, attempt to buy products with relatively little packaging. Explain to your children that jute bags and recycled paper bags are better for the environment because they can be used again and again. If you do pick up plastic bags out of necessity, ensure you go home and keep them somewhere so you can reuse those as well. If you have

daughters in their teens or preteens teach them the meaning of ‘non-animal tested cosmetics’ and remember to set an example by not buying products that have been tested on animals!

SAVE WATERWater is our most precious natural resource and we’re quickly running out! Remind your children to turn off the tap when brushing their teeth so that water is not wasted. Encourage short showers instead of long drawn out baths at home.

PICK UP YOUR RUBBISHFinally, remember to continuously remind your kids not to litter. Not only is this very bad for the environment, but is also extremely discourteous to other people in the area. When you go to a picnic area or out for a family outing, have your kids help you clean up the area and make it a point to leave it in the exact same condition you found it in (if not better). Ask them how they would feel if they had come to the area and found it spoiled by some other family! Remember to also remind them of the difference between the recycle bin and the trash can. Have them occasionally help you out with the composting when they grow older.

Following these simple pointers will ensure your kids grow up to be environmentally responsible citizens. Can we save the planet one child at a time? Let’s find out!

Life’s aBeach!

Oman’s beautiful beaches provide visitors opportunities

to sunbathe, surf, indulge in numerous water sports,

barbeque, or just plan hang out! Mahreen Sohail presents a list of some of the most gorgeous

beaches across Oman…

Bandar Jissah, Muscat

Page 51: Al Mara - English - June 2010

As the summer months start to beat down on Oman, crowds of tourists and locals are making their way to the coast of Oman

to, well, cool down. Oman’s coastline - which extends for about 1700km - is lined with beautiful beaches; heaven on earth for the sea life that dwells in them. Littered with shells, crabs and fish, the beaches provide a full day of amusement for families and friends. This list of stunning beaches in Oman is by no means exhaustive, but it does include some of the most gorgeous beach fronts across the country. So next time, you find yourself at home, bored and sick of the heat, grab your sunscreen and your beach gear and head on out towards one of these stunning sand lines beaches.

AL SAWADI BEACH, BARKAIf there’s one beach that stands a cut above the rest, it’s Al Sawadi Beach. Anyone who’s been in Oman for longer than a few days has visited this must-see site, just an hour’s drive away from Muscat. This wide, shallow beach is a treat for eyes; at low tide it stretches like a glistening sheet of glass for as far as the eye can see. You can also indulge in a number of water sports at the beach; banana rides, tuba rides, kayaks, diving, water skiing, jet skiing? It’s

all there at your fingertips! And if you feel like a bite to eat later, the Al-Sawadi Beach Resort provides all the creature comforts one could need.

BANDAR JISSAH, MUSCATAs we travel back to the capital, it’s important to stop off at another,(slightly more secluded) destination, Bandar Jissah. Most have no doubt heard about Shangri-La, a major hotel in Muscat, but few know about the great opportunities offered by Bandar Jissah bay in which the hotel is nestled. The area is known for its plentiful snorkelling and diving sites, and is an excellent place to explore the sea when the tide is out. Fancy a bit of wildlife fun? Head out to Bandar Jissah. If you’re looking for a bit of an extended vacation from work, try the Bandar Jissah Resort; apparently, they rock when it comes to pampering their guests!

QURUM BEACH, MUSCATHaving undergone extensive renovations, Qurum Beach is the premier beach destination in the capital. Lined with glitzy storefronts, expansive walkways and an established barbecue system, the beach is frequented by locals and tourists alike. But even without the flashy colours

and serious development, Qurum beach remains at its core a magnificent beach. A golden stretch of sand, bordered on one side by sheer cliffs, it is really a place of many sights and wonders. So, whenever you’re visiting the city for a quick business trip or making a simple rest-stop, don’t forget to visit this home away from home by the sea!

RAS AL JINZ, SURWe would never be doing justice to Oman’s greatest beaches if we didn’t mention Ras Al Jinz, the tourist hotspot that has become somewhat a part of the nation’s identity. Located near Sur, Ras Al Jinz boasts more than just the pristine beaches sprawled all along Oman’s coastline. It is home to a growing attraction – turtle watching. At a certain period of the year, people from all over the world congregate at Ras Al Jinz to watch turtles laying their eggs in the dead of the night and slipping into the warm Arabian waters. It is a spectacle seen in a few other places over the world and is now a major tourist attraction in Oman.

SHELL BEACH, MUSCATThis beach is located near the Civil Aviation Club in Azaiba and is abundant

in cray fish, cuttle fish and of course, shells. Whilst a four-wheel drive is necessary to get to the water’s edge, once you do get there you are greeted by a sight worth beholding. A stretch of water, pristinely blue greets beach goers, reminding them that some things are universally acknowledged as being beautiful. It puts the theory ‘beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’ to test. Take your kids down to collect shells, look at the star fish and build sand castle till the sun sets!

MUGHSAIL BEACH, SALALAHFrom craggy, eroded rocks to long,

endless sandy strips, Mughsail Beach is one of the most popular places in south-west Oman. Mughsail beach is mostly a stretch of unspoilt sandy area which hugs the main road for almost its entire stretch, making it accessible to all. But what makes this region so special is the beach’s spectacular ‘finale’, if you will, – a rocky pass full of blow-holes and broiling water that marks the end of the beach. The blow-hole in this popular tourist destination can shoot water up to one hundred feet. The sharp rocks can vapourise the sea water, resulting in an atmosphere saturated in water droplets!

So whenever you fancy a bit of water, take a trip to Mughsail beach!

When you visit these beaches remember to be armed with sunscreen! A healthy tan looks gorgeous, but sunburn can be decidedly uncomfortable. Please, also remember to clean up before you leave. These beaches are beautiful because people respect that they must be kept clean. Don’t throw things into the ocean, or leave the sandy beach lined with your discarded picnic things. Most of all though, be sure to have a whale of a time (no pun intended!).

Dive intoThe Euro Dive Center attached to Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa marina provides many opportunities to residents and visitors to explore the beauty of Oman’s vast coastline. Rekha Baala finds out the interesting things on offer...

man has a vast and largely unspoilt coastline that stretches to over 3000 km. Therefore, the waters

of Oman are home to many fun and adventurous

activities whether they be diving, snorkelling or deep sea fishing. Or you could opt to go on great underwater journeys to have a glimpse of the rich marine life the waters are famous for.

With the sea so close to all of us, all we need is the interest and enthusiasm to discover what pleasures it has in store. With beach and water tourism largely gaining ground and Oman fast becoming a popular diving destination, we decided to have a first-hand experience of what a major dive centre in Oman is doing to encourage the love for the waters and promote tourism as well.

We reach the Euro Divers Center,

located right on the premium Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa marina one warm morning. The marina is beautiful with a few boats bobbing about on the waters. The sea is changing colour by the moment from blue to green to deep green as we are instantly filled with a sense of warmth and serenity.

Ben Bee, the Dive Center manager of Euro Divers Oman suggests a boat ride out into the sea. It’s not blazing hot as yet, and so we jump at the idea. Nothing rejuvenates more than a ride out into the sea, feeling the wind on your face, far away from the madding crowd. We decide to take the conversation along too... to the deck where Ben had some interesting insights to share on diving in Oman and the role Euro Dive Center plays in this area.

“Euro Divers began about 30 years ago in the Maldives and there are around 20 of them around the world. Here, we work hand-in-hand with Shangri-La’s Barr Al

Jissah Resort & Spa where we get a lot of guests from the hotel who enjoy year round diving trips, night dives, dolphin watching or diving trips to the Islands of the Damaniyat National Reserve.”

How different is diving in Oman? “There is definitely a difference between diving in winter and summer. The temperature changes dramatically in land and water. I have been in places like Thailand and the Philippines where the weather is much more stable. But what strikes me best about Oman’s coastline is that it is a diver’s paradise, absolutely unspoilt, with plenty of diving spots and the rich marine life beneath the sea.”

As we head further and further away from the marina and out into the sea, Ben points out some perfect diving spots. And also explains why Oman is fast becoming an alternative viable holiday destination. “We are in an interesting location geographically. There’s so much in Oman

for the tourist; you can go out into the desert, camp out under the stars, go wadi bashing or have a relaxing beach holiday.”

And how does the Euro Dive Center plan to cash in on the growing numbers? “When the hotel (Shangri-La) is busy, we are busy too. But we are also trying to increase footfall by trying to get people from outside the hotel, having close links with tour operators, introducing special offers for the summer, etc. Also we offer the whole range of PADI courses from the Bubble Maker to instructor courses, including Nitrox courses,” he says.

As we head back to the marina, the water has now turned grey in tune with the clouds. Ben is enthusiastic about the season after summer. “Perhaps, we should have something exclusively for the ladies,” he suggests.

Now that’s something to look forward to... Ladies, are you ready for the adventure?

workwise

We are all capable of behaving either aggressively, assertively or passively depending

on certain situations and feelings. But it is imperative that we can choose and control our behaviour by following certain practices.

Most people have the tendency to exhibit one type of behaviour. Which means that you could choose to be assertive in most situations, yet experience being aggressive when you have to work on a double shift, or even be passive when looking after a loved one who is sick.

Looking closely at these three behaviours, one can surmise that aggressive behaviour does not come from being over-confident; rather, it is actually a result of lack of confidence and even fear.

Look at women who are passive. We often see that they reach a point where they do not know their views and feelings

BeAssertive!Being assertive is not about having your way, it is a type of behavior that allows you to express your ideas, feelings and needs says Lamha Al Habsi, instructor at the British Council’s Springboard Training Programme

on a certain subject anymore. They also have a feeling of dissatisfaction as they are not taken seriously.

On the other hand, a majority of people who want to be assertive are scared to do so because they do not want people to feel that they are aggressive and they just want to be nice. Assertiveness is a behavioral style that allows a person to express her feelings, ideas and needs while respecting the rights and needs of others as well.

Do you want to be assertive? Here are some ways to do it.

BE AN ACTIVE LISTENERCommunication should always be two-way, so letting people know your boundaries and feelings are as important as allowing them to express their feelings, ideas and needs. People who are successful at being assertive are good listeners. You may be able to listen well in some circumstances but it can be more difficult when the subject is complex or controversial.

DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDINGEverybody wants to be understood and you could demonstrate that by how you listen and by what you say. You could even put yourself in the other person’s situation and then summarise by telling them how you think they are feeling, what are they thinking or what it is that you think they want to do next. It also requires you to listen and note their body language. Are they flailing their arms around in disgust? Then you might say something

like, “I can see that you are really frustrated,” or “I can see that you are very upset about this.”

SAY WHAT YOU THINK AND FEEL AND WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO HAPPEN Learn how you can start expressing what you are

thinking of and feeling by

finding the right word. Words can give clues about whether you are assertive or not. Being clear will also minimise the chances of being misunderstood. Always begin with an attractive or charming statement. You could do that by complimenting or thanking the other person or apologising or agreeing with the person to calm her. Remember to use word and statements that• Demonstrate that you understand.• Say what you think and feel.• Say specifically what you want to happen.

WORK OUT A JOINT SOLUTIONIn order to fill the gap between what you want and what others want, a joint solution is required. A joint solution will please all parties without compromise and this is where the real understanding and negotiation actually begin. You should also consider the consequences of each choice on both yourself and the others. You also need to take a look at yourself and make sure that your are presenting yourself positively and clearly and this can be done by:

DRAWING A CLEAR LINE In order to become assertive person, you need to have clear boundaries that are set by you. The only difference between an assertive person and a passive person is that the former makes this line very clear and does not allow anyone to step over it.

WORKING ON BODY LANGUAGE People need to make sure that their body language and appearance are actually matching with the tone of voice. Professor Albert Mehrabian, a communications expert, who has pioneered the understanding of communications since the 1960s, discovered that the messages that people receive about other people comprise three ingredients according to the following percentage:

Appearance and body language – 55 per centVoice – 38 per centWords – 7 per centSo it is evident that appearance and body

language are most important when it comes to communication. But it is also necessary that appearance, word and voice need to deliver the same message.

PRACTISINGIt is also all about practising. Recognise that it may be scary at first and that it probably won’t be perfect. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Simply resolve to learn from each attempt on how to do it better next time.

Becoming assertive may be one of the hardest things you have ever done but learning and mastering it is one of the most rewarding experiences in life.

top driveREV IT It’s been a long time since we had the

Honda Civic Type R in Oman, and when the opportunity came up for a test drive, we jumped at it. We knew it’s

a hot hatch alright, but we wanted to test it fully on the roads and be assured that when it came to performance, would it match up to the best in its class?

So we got the car one hot afternoon to put it through its paces. It was a real ‘hot’ entry with the temperature showing 47 degrees. Nevertheless, we were game for a long ride and a photo-shoot. The photo-op seemed exciting because the car turned heads wherever it went. The bright Milano Red is surely eye-catching on the roads and exhibits a youthful verve and spirit and is largely preferred by the young or even those who are still young at heart.

With its low front grille, aggressive lines, 18-inch alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, the Honda Civic Type R is modelled on what we would call a ‘space-age’ look! What’s most striking about the car is that everything in the car seems to have a triangular theme about it. These include the sharp, angular headlights and fog lamps, the chrome door handles, wing mirror mounted indicators right down to the shape of the exhaust tips at the rear end of the car.

The interior continues in the classic red

theme generally associated with the Type R and follows a similar ‘space age’ look of the exterior. Did you know that the Type R is well-known among auto enthusiasts for its high-revving performance? Well, the interior definitely reflects this in practically every feature whether they be the racing red Alcantara seats, the big red start button, drilled aluminium pedals, the sole centre-mounted rev counter, the contrast stitching on the sports steering wheel and a lot more. There are some other nice touches that add to the sporty ambience of the interior such as the plaque engraved with the car’s unique serial number, positioned just above the gearshift, the 6-speed Type R gearshift knob with aluminium finish has a black leather boot with red stitching and a ruby-like hazard light button.

When it comes to practicality and space, the seats of the Type R are extremely spacious and comfortable in the front and surprisingly at the back too. The driving position is near perfect and very adjustable too! It even has a humungous boot to fit all your shopping bags! Now that’s what we call an added advantage!

When you take the Type R onto the road, you have to keep in mind that the Type R was designed to be a performance-oriented vehicle. Sporty and fun would mean that you have to make those teeny-weeny concessions when it comes to ride comfort. On the highways, for the most part, we experienced a relatively smooth drive but on the bumpy back roads the ride can get quite shaky. It has a 198hp, 2-litre engine that revs to a dizzying 8000rpm. Its handling is spot on and the car does exactly what you want it to do.

So what’s our take on the 2010 Civic Type R? It is a car that likes to be pushed hard and you’ll have to if you want to bring out its true potential. It’s also taut, positive, well-balanced and easy to live with.

So what are you waiting for? Head to the nearest Honda showroom, book a test-drive and ‘rev’ away!

HOMEremediesfor EVERYDAY troubles…Body odour is a big turn-off. And no

one wants to be associated with it.

Bathing daily with a proper soap,

body wash or shower gel, wearing

clean clothes, maintaining personal

hygiene are the obvious steps to

reduce body odour. But if it persists,

you could try the following. • Take

two drops of tea tree oil and mix

with about one ounce of water. Pour

the solution in a spray-top bottle and

use as a deodorant. Tea tree is an

anti-bacterial herb. •Before taking

a bath, put a few drops of rose

water in the bath tub. This simple

procedure helps maintain long

lasting freshness. • White vinegar

is also helpful in overcoming the

problem of body odour. Wet a cotton

ball with white vinegar and wipe

your underarms with it. The vinegar

smell will automatically fade away

in some time leaving you odour-

free. •Apply baby powder or talc on

armpits instead of deodorants.

All of us suffer from hair loss at

one time or the other. The following

home remedies could help.

• Prepare a paste by mixing one

teaspoon of cinnamon powder, some

warm olive oil and honey. Apply on

the scalp for about 15 minutes and

then wash off. • A combination of

carrot, lettuce and alfafa juice can

be taken regularly to reduce the

problem. • A mixture of rosemary

oil, olive oil, lemon juice and one egg

yolk can also be applied on the roots

and then washed off as a good home

remedy.

Stress would imply different things

to different people. For some, it

would mean dark circles under

the eyes. How can you get rid of

those? • Apply a thinly-sliced piece

of cucumber on top of each eye for

15 to 20 minutes, twice a day. • A

mixture of almond oil and honey

could be applied on the affected

area before sleeping. • Drink atleast

two to three litres of water daily. It

flushes out the toxins present in the

body. • A cold tea bag placed on

top of the eye should also provide a

cooling effect.

If you are suffering from cracked

wheels, do not despair, help is on

hand. • Apply any shortening or

hydrogenated vegetable oil after

washing the feet clean on dry and

cracked areas of the feet. After

applying a thick coat of shortening

on the feet, wear a pair of thick

socks. Leaving this application

overnight can surely provide positive

results in few days. • Apply the

pulp of a ripe banana on the dry

or cracked area of the heel. Leave

it on for 10 minutes and rinse it

clean. • Soak the feet in lemon juice

for about 10 minutes. Follow this

therapy on a weekly basis until you

find a change.

GreenPowerWomen have a huge stake in the environment and they are

best suited to take on the task of protecting the earth, says

Dr Prema Seshadri

JUNE 201062

Page 65: Al Mara - English - June 2010

Traditionally, women have been the ones responsible for gathering food, fuel, and fodder. While

subtleties have changed, the fact that women continue being the primary users of natural resources has not changed throughout the world. It is interesting to see how women’s perspective and values for the environment are so different from men’s. Throughout history men have viewed natural resources as commercial entities or means to generate a greater income, whereas women have tended to see the environment as a necessary resource supporting their basic needs. That is why women have been affected differently by environmental degradation, deforestation, over-population, and pollution.

With everything in today’s life being so intertwined, a little imbalance in one quarter affects the equilibrium of the entire globe. When the environment is vandalised, it is reflected in the escalation of prices of basic commodities, the most elementary being food, fuel, and more. And with the onus of juggling the home finances resting mainly on the woman, she comes under pressure to cope with demands that can prove to be debilitating. The pressure is amplified even more in the modern day for woman, who now has to manage huge responsibilities both within the home and outside. She is now compelled to manage the needs of her business, the needs of the family, her own needs, and the needs of the society around her. It is ironical that with more technology aiming to aid and assist in the grind of life, women are hard-pressed to find the time to ease up and relax. Added to the woes is the undeniable truth that more technology has meant more invasions of nature and the environment.

Women, thus, have a huge stake in the environment. And this stake is reflected in the degree to which they care about natural resources. It has now become imperative that women give greater priority to safeguarding and humanising

the capacity of nature. Nature provides in abundance but it can give only this much and not more. We need to acknowledge and respect what it gives. It is heartening to know that since women are the ones who are most directly affected by environmental issues, they have worldwide become more concerned about environmental problems. Today women need to regroup to fight the alarming global trends that are threatening to shake the very balance of society, and begin to work together to affect substantial change. Setting up non-governmental

organisations, from the smallest to the biggest, from domestic to the international, wherein women play the central role is the all-important first step that needs to be taken. Women need to recognise themselves and be seen by the world as an integral solution to the environmental dilemmas that confront the globe today. It is equally important for us women to make the world respect the fact that not only should women have the right to participate in environmental issues but also recognise the special and different relationship that they have with the environment based on different needs, responsibilities and knowledge about natural resources.

Apart from a woman’s special bonding with nature, she also possesses a sensitivity that is innate to the feminine nature. This gender-based criterion is a gift that gives her a special reach to the myriad atoms around her. It gives her an insight, a feel, so to speak, of the issue at hand and a resolution to it too. She will not only operate from the heart but will utilise a common-sense approach that will help reach a productive conclusion. That is truly the strength of a woman. Endowed with this gift, the woman makes the perfect candidate to occupy the important post of a decision maker who will respond more sensitively and actively to environmental dilemmas and debates. So, considering women’s large investment in environmental sustainability, it may not be wrong to theorise that women would protect the earth better if given the position and authority to do so.

If allowed to stretch myself a little bit more, I would even go as far as to see a certain bonding between women and the environment. Both, over lifetimes, have been seen more as subordinate entities. There is thus that added affiliation between women and nature. Both understand each other’s fragility as well as the inner strength. Who is better to take on the onus of protecting the environment than women?

Eco-feminism thus makes a lot of sense. A social and political movement, it points to the considerable common ground between environmentalism and feminism, women subordination and nature degradation. Women can thus take up the cudgels to protect what is theirs by taking steps, be it small in the form of using environmental-friendly material, be it paper or cloth bags or organic make up, or in the largest capacity of powerful decision-makers, vis-à-vis the environment, for the country. Either way, a woman is the one best suited to take on the daunting task of protecting the earth, which is both, the ultimate giver and the ultimate taker.

IT HAS NOW BECOME

IMPERATIVE THAT WOMEN

GIVE GREATER PRIORITY

TO SAFEGUARDING

AND HUMANISING THE

CAPACITY OF NATURE.

NATURE PROVIDES IN

ABUNDANCE BUT IT CAN

GIVE ONLY SO MUCH AND

NOT MORE. WE NEED

TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND

RESPECT WHAT IT GIVES.

health plus

Nine months ago, I had a pelvis scan done as prescribed by doctor. The impression showed polycystic ovaries (mild). I am married for one year and three months and

trying to get pregnant. While trying to conceive, I once got my periods 10 days in advance. Usually, I have a 30-32 days cycle. Should I check with the doctor first regarding this? I am confused. Usually it is a 30 to 32-day cycle. Should I check with the doctor first and then try pregnancy? Please help as I am confused.

I think you should do a scan on day 12 of the period. This would determine when you are ovulating and may change

from cycle to cycle. In case you are not ovulating, your doctor can prescribe tablets like Clomid in the next cycle. Also have your husband’s semen examined. Let me know the results of the scan and the semen, so I can advise you further.

We have been trying for a baby for the past 12 to 14 months, so we consulted a doctor who asked me to do the semen analysis test which was normal, so the doctor asked us to

do follicular test and suggested to take 50mg Clofert but my wife mistakenly

took 100mg for three days starting on the second day of her period and took only 50mg for the next two days. (So instead of 250mg suggested by doctor she took 400mg). Now we are worried what the complications could be. Can we have a normal relationship during this cycle? We have, however decided to do a follicular test suggested by doctor. Please advise.

The high dose of Clofert may have enlarged the ovaries. Have an ultrasound done to determine that there are no cysts

in the ovaries. Monitoring the size of the follicles is a must while on Clofert. In future, a scan must always be done on day 12 of the period and a follow-up done till the follicle is around 18-20 mm.

I am trying to conceive and my general physician suggested taking Fortomid-25 twice a day. I have taken the medicine for a month with no result. What could be the reason?

First of all, whenever you are taking Fertomid, an ultrasound should be done around day 12 of the cycle to determine whether

you are ovulating with that dose or not and also that your ovaries are not getting unduly enlarged. This would also determine your fertile period. So, during

the next cycle, take the same dose and let me know the results of the scan. Also, let me know your husband’s semen report.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and have conceived after seven years of taking medication. I also have a PCOD problem. The doctor gave me progesterone support with

Duphaston and Proluton injections till now but since the placenta is now well-developed she said that there is no need of progesterone support. Is that okay?

You do not need any more progesterone support. Make sure you do not over exert.

Also, ensure that you do not have urinary or vaginal infection, as these can predispose to pre-term delivery. If you have any pain like a period pain, contact your doctor immediately to determine whether your uterus is contracting or not. If it is, certain medication can be given for that. All the best!

JUNE 201068

Page 71: Al Mara - English - June 2010

Our cuisine journey this month makes a food-stop at Turkey, one of the most exotic and culturally rich destinations of

the world.

If you did not know already, Turkish cuisine is considered one of the best because of the sheer diversity of its recipes and the use of natural ingredients. The cuisine is also a bridge between Far Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, with the accent always on natural taste.

Thankfully, our knowledge of Turkey and its overwhelming variety of dishes were not just limited to aromatic coffee brewed by many of our colleagues during the day or even the endless assortment of kebabs served at the Turkish restaurant next door.

Yes, we knew that Turkish food was all about the bounties of nature and how best they are preserved in original taste and form. But as they say, when it comes to food, no knowledge is just enough. And who better to introduce us to more wonders of Turkish cuisine than Hulya Yanasan Erol, wife of the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the Sultanate.

For Hulya, life in Oman is all about new beginnings. She got married to HE M. Hayri Erol in March and also stepped into her role as a diplomat’s wife. She is clearly excited by it all. “I am very happy as this is a different life I am experiencing,” she begins. “I’ve travelled to many countries before but it’s great

to be here in Oman and starting life as a bride,” says.Hulya was born in Izmir and lived there until the age of 20 as part of a huge family. She moved to Istanbul thereafter, plunging headlong into the family business, a franchise of Fedex, where she worked for 25 years.

We ask Hulya about her interest in Turkish food and her early forays into cooking. “Since I grew up in a large family, learning cooking was a given. I learnt a lot from my grandmother, especially dishes from Ottoman cuisine. I used to like helping out in the kitchen all the time.”

So what’s special or unique about Turkish food? Hulya explains it quite simply. “It is pure and so absolutely perfect. It is also healthy in a way because of the abundant use of fresh, locally available ingredients, especially vegetables.”

Hulya’s mother comes from Crete, a part of the Aegean islands, where vegetables form a major part of the daily diet. “I grew up eating plenty of green vegetables, all cooked in olive oil and therefore, very healthy,” she says.

So what constitutes a traditional meal? “Breakfast is generally bread with home-made tomato paste laced with oregano or cheese. Lunch comprises mostly vegetable dishes and rarely has meat. Dinner is the heaviest meal of the day with chicken, fish or beef. Vegetables, especially in the form of salads called meze are hugely popular

as well. Soups or chorba are again made from different vegetables and are savoured during lunch or dinner.”

For official functions and celebrations, Hulya informs us that Karniyarik (beef and eggplant) is an essential part of the meal. Eggplants are stuffed with ground meat are served as a hot main dish with rice pilaf and this is a Turkish delicacy one must simply have.

The couple is mostly into Turkish food at home but likes to enjoy dishes from other countries as well. Hulya claims that she has converted her husband to her style of cooking by making him eat even the dishes that he was not quite fond of before. She also experiments with different ingredients and loves making soup from any vegetable.

But always with one thing in mind… healthy cooking and therefore, healthy eating.

As we say adieu, Hulya is apologetic that she has not prepared the famed Turkish Dolma (vine leaves stuffed with meat) for us. We tell her that there’s always a next time, for one session is not enough to do justice to the sheer number of delicacies Turkish cuisine has to offer.

Till then, we shall try out these three traditional dishes. We welcome you to do so too. And, as the Turkish say, Afiyet Olsun! Or happy eating!

Ola, Carmen!

Rami Al Ali, one of the top fashion designers

in the Middle East finds inspiration in Carmen, a

woman of myriad emotions in his new Carmen by

Rami Al Ali – Spring-Summer Collection 2010.

An extremely complex and versatile

character, Carmen is simultaneously

repellent and sympathetic, lovely and hateful, understandable

and irrational.

Carmen, the collection was inspired by this liberal mysterious

strong Carmen woman, with her internal contradicting emotions

which led to the tough dramatic ending of her existence.

Rami Al Ali chose the fabric to match Carmen’s sharp character and evident charisma. The prints

come out strong, with sophisticated voluminous fabrics, light and

flowing; overstated by crystallised

tussles, frills, fringes which are applied in different ways, along

with lots of layering; extending from organza, chiffon, silk, taffeta to

stain and jacquard. Rami has tried to emphasise the Spanish Matador

costumes, the bolero jackets and the flamenco dancers’ effect into the collection’s cuts, silhouettes

and colours. The designs vary from narrow high waist pencil skirts,

to curved hips, representing the alluring modern woman.

Colours are vibrant, wild, feminine and warm. Here

fuchsia is the new red and some dresses are festooned

with gold shimmer and champagne hues to give a

perfect skin reflection to the Mediterranean look and is also adorned with florescent citron

yellow and aqua turquoise. Plastic art on big prints and

boldly contrasted colours, with presence of black and white,

lime green are all meticulously intertwined.

The finale is a stunning wedding gown with low

fit, narrow waist and exaggerated layering,

made of different materials that include organza, tulle

to light gold laces, mixed in pearly shades of off-white.

The collection comprises 30 evening dresses,

and one wedding gown, wrapping up Rami Al Ali’s

lady for the Spring-Summer season of 2010.
