HISTORICAL EVENTS Khatm-e-Bukhari Shareef Seeking knowledge is a never ending endeavor. Students at Darul Uloom Zakariyya (New York) begin their journey towards gaining in-depth understanding of Quran, Hadith, and Fiqah by dedicating six years to the Dars-e-Nizami program. During these years, students are taught various books that develop their skills to such a level that they can independently continue to study and teach others as well. The last lesson from the Sahih al-Bukhari that crowns them the award of becoming an Aalim or Aalimah, is conducted at the ceremony of Khatm-e-Bukhari Shareef. This accomplishment makes their graduating day one of the most blessed gathering. Scholars and masses travel from all over the nation to get a share from the barakah of this historical event.

Although, there are countless services for which the entire community is indebted to Hazrat Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon, there are two major historical contributions.

FATWA TO UNITE ON DAYS OF EID & COMMENCEMENT OF RAMADHAN

Foremost is uniting Muslims in celebration of Eid’s and commencement of Ramadhan. Not long ago, it was customary on every Eid and Ramadhan to see tremendous discord, confusion, and conflicts in every Masjid, community center, among relatives, and even within the same family. The joys of most auspicious days and sanctity of the most sacred month of Islam were ruined by constant disagreement on deciding the real methodology for this vital occasion. Sheikh-ul-Hadith Hazrat Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon took upon this burdensome task and made it a mission to root out this conflict for good. He dedicated long hours researching this topic and compiled a Grand Fatwa of following Global Moon Sighting, making Makkah as our central authority. After gaining consensus from the prominent scholars and religious leaders, Hazrat Ji campaigned all over USA to explain the dire need of unity. After two years of bold leadership this Grand Fatwa got widespread acceptance and is now followed almost everywhere in North America. Muslim communities in other parts of the world also saw its efficacy and have started to religiously follow as well.

ADDING ISLAM TO NEW YORK RELIGIOUS CORPORATE LAW

With the efforts of Dr. Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon, NY State Senator Tony Avella has successfully passed the bill in Senate and Assembly to add Islam in the New York State Religious Corporation Law. Since the past fifty years there were twenty religions added in the list, but Islam was not one of them. Hazrat Mufti Muneer Akhoon organized campaigns to collect petitions from the public and generated the momentum needed to achieve this landmark success. One of the major benefits of this bill is that Islamic religious clergy titles like Imam, Maulana, Mufti, Hafiz, Qari, Peer-e-Tariqat will be officially recognized by the government. This historical achievement is unparalleled and

the entire Muslim community is thankful to Hazrat ji for his revolutionary leadership and vision.
