Worries:
I thought January was a tough month—way too
many of us got sick. But sitting here at the end
of February and seeing all the news about the
corona virus, I’m getting very worried about all of our health. As
a secondary issue, I’m also worried about our ability to hold
games. If things get as bad as the CDC is saying, I can see our
public health officials banning all public gatherings including our
bridge games. My personal take is that I will support measures
that ensure the health and safety of our players.
A second worry is that our sectional venues are becoming horri-
bly expensive and ACBL has passed along price increases for ta-
bles and directors as well. The rent for the Orangevale has gone
up by 67% in four years. This is far beyond inflation or any other
expense. The ACBL price increases are far more moderate but
they come in a bad situation. The unit is committed to holding
sectionals but we must look at creative solutions to make them
happen.
But remember, cherry blossoms are beautiful and spring is com-
ing!
All the best!!

ing his 100th birthday on

The Farley
Mike Grob (left) awarded the Farley
plaque to John Jefferson.
Mike Grob established the award in
memory of Joe Farley who was an excel-
lent bridge player.
The award is given to the player who has
had the most 1st place wins through the
year at SBC. The winner must have
played at least 75 games at SBC. John’s
wife, Joanne Merry, received the award
last year.
When you look at the list, it
reads like “Who’s Who” in the
Sacramento bridge scene. The
award only has one two time
winner in the six years of its ex-
istence.
I’ve never seen another award
like this. In ACBL, almost all
awards are based on master
points. But this one counts 1st
place finishes only and ignores
everything else. Interesting idea
Mike!
