James Spady enters his first season on “The Hill” as head football coach.

He coached the last three years at the University of Nevada, including a strong 2013 campaign that saw the Wolf Pack produce one of the top tight ends in the Mountain West Conference in John Mackey Award semifinalist Zach Sudfeld.

Spady is no stranger to developing talent. In his first year, he guided All-WAC tight end Virgil Green, who was picked in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Green, a multi-year starter, proved himself to be one of the best tight ends in program history during his career in Reno. Green, who played in more than 50 games in his career at Nevada, caught 72 passes in his career for 939 yards and 11 touchdowns while also serving as a devastating blocker in the run game.

In 2012, Spady guided one of the best comeback stories in college football as Sudfeld came back for a sixth season in his injury-riddled career at Nevada to start every game and become a semifi-nalist for the Mackey Award. Sudfeld earned All-Mountain West second-team honors as he caught 45 passes for 598 yards and set a school record for most touchdowns by a tight end with eight.

In his collegiate career at the University of Texas-El Paso, Spady was a four-year starter and twice earned first-team All-WAC honors at center. He was recently honored by named to the Miners’ Centennial Team. After a three-year career in the Arena Football League, Spady returned to UTEP to begin his coaching career.

He spent 11 seasons with the Miners helping to develop both the offensive and defensive lines,

as well as the tight ends. Spady coached the tight ends at UTEP from 1996-1999 when he aided in the development of Brian Natkin, a consensus All-American in 2000.

From 1993-1995, Spady was a student/graduate assistant coach working with both the offensive and defensive lines. Spady was the defensive line coach at UTEP from 2000-2003 and returned to the offensive side of the ball during the 2003 season when he took over the tight ends.

He came to Reno after three successful seasons as the offensive coordinator at Grambling State. During his time with the Tigers, the team grew offensively and reached the SWAC champion-ship game in his first year. Grambling State led the SWAC in a number of offensive categories and a handful of Tigers players set school records and earned all-conference accolades.

Spady went to Grambling State after one season (2006) at North Carolina Central, where he helped the Eagles to a perfect 11-0 season and a trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs. NCCU finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in the D-II Top 25 poll. NCCU led its confer-ence in 12 offensive statistical categories and Spady’s offensive line yielded just 10 sacks in 289 pass attempts.

Prior to his stint at North Carolina Central, Spady spent two seasons as the offensive line coach at South Carolina State from 2004 to 2005. Under Spady’s tutelage, the offensive line cleared the way for 9,049 yards of total offense and 34.7 points per game during the 2004-05 seasons.

In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, Spady is also an avid student of the game as he has served two NFL Minority Internships with the Green Bay Packers in 1997 and in 1999 with the Philadelphia Eagles. During June 2007, Spady was one of 28 coaches selected to participate in the 2008 NCAA Expert Coaches Academy in Dallas.

ORLANDO, FL – It wasn’t quite the opening game Head Coach James Spady and the Bulldogs faithful were hoping for Sunday.

The Bulldogs scored first early and trailed just 7-6 late in the first quarter before North Carolina A&T responded with 31 unanswered points en route to a 47-13 win over Alabama A&M in the 10th annual MEAC-SWAC Challenge presented by Disney at Bright House Networks Stadium.

After rushing for 21 yards on their second drive, the Bulldogs took to the air and Challenge MVP Jaymason Lee connected with O’Darius Williams for a 32-yard gain. They were able to push deep into the Aggies redzone but couldn’t punch it through and converted a 20-yard field goal from Cesar Diaz-Ramon to take the 3-0 lead.

The Aggies responded with a 26-yard touchdown run to take the lead less than a minute later. After an exchange of turn-overs, the Bulldogs reached the Aggies’ 10 yard-line but again called on Diaz-Ramon who kicked a 27-yard field goals to cut the A&T lead to 7-6 with iust 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

However, North Carolina A&T’s Cody Jones took the ensu-ing kickoff 95 yards in 15 seconds to extend the Aggies lead before the end of the first quarter. The Aggies then scored four more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 38-6 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs defense stiffened in the second half, holding A&T to 9 points but the offense couldn’t muster any points in the third quarter.

But they started a 47-yard drive to start the fourth quarter that was capped when Brandon Wells found Jonathan Dorsey wide open in the endzone for a 5-yard TD.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday in a 1 p.m. matchup at Tuskegee.

They open at home Oct. 4 for Homecoming weekend and the fifth annual Louis Crews Classic against SWAC rival Gram-bling State at 2 p.m

Game 2 • A&M 30, Tuskegee 17Sept. 6, 2014 • Cleve Abbott Sadium • Tuskegee, Ala. • 5,378

TUSKEGEE – Bryan Brower scored two touchdowns and Jaymason Lee passed for two more as Alabama A&M beat Tuskegee 30-17 Saturday.

The Bulldogs win was the first for Head Coach James Spady.

“I can’t describe it,” Spady said of his first win.

For the Bulldogs, it was a turn-around from last week’s 47-13 loss to North Carolina A&T.

“We asked them what kind of legacy do they want,” Spady said. “I appreciate the way they responded.”

Alabama A&M (1-1) scored first at the 7:23 mark when Brower scored on a 5-yard run, capping a 10 play, 67-yard drive.

But the Golden Tigers (0-1) answered a couple minutes later when quarterback Justin Nared hit Marquel Gardner on an 87-yard scoring strike with 5:27 left in the quarter.

Lightning struck twice here as Lee found Octayvius Miles for a 72-yard catch and run to put the Bulldogs up 14-7 at 4:06 of the quarter.

The Golden Tigers cut the lead to 14-10 on a 33-yard field goal from Trevor Wylie.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored on a 77-yard pass from Lee to Montaurius Smith and Brower scored his second TD of the game on a 4-yard run with 2:18 to play.

Michael Thornton scored for Tuskegee with 12:49 left in the third to cut A&M’s advantage to 27-17 but A&M kicker Ce-sar Ramon Diaz wrapped up the scoring with a 38-yard field goal with 7:31 left in the game.

The Bulldogs travel to Alabama-Birmingham next Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
