PURPOSES 1. To encourage an active interest in mathematics 2. To improve the teaching of mathematics at all levels 3. To encourage higher qualifications of mathematics teachers 4. To promote a spirit of cooperation and professional ethics 5. To influence a continuous development of a mathematics curriculum 6. To promote participation in mathematics clubs, Mu Alpha Theta

Chapters and mathematics tournaments for students. Map and Alphabetical List of Counties show division of state into Districts, each managed by a Director serving usually a two-year term.

PURPOSES of the DISTRICTS I. To coordinate activities at local levels 2. To encourage membership in ACTM and NCTM 3. To plan and implement in-service workshops for mathematics teachers 4. To plan and implement district 4oumaments for students 5. To represent the district in state planning sessions

District Organizations District organization in ACTM was informal during years 1964-1969. Districts followed the pattern of Alabama Education Association of congressional districts, which was changed during that time. New district IV (old district V), Jefferson and Shelby Counties began meetings and workshops held each fall. Not all districts had meetings or elected directors of record until those listed under 1969-70.

Union of the Mathematics Department of the Alabama Education Association and the

Alabama State Teachers Association created the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics. An interim Constitution specifying composition of officers and district directors for a two-year period with equal representation from the two groups was adopted for use from March, 1970. At the end of the interim period, officers and district directors were subsequently elected as specified in the permanent Constitution also adopted March 12-17, 1970. Chartered as an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics at its convention in Anaheim, California, April, 1971

ALABAMA STATE MATHEMATICS CONTEST In 1979, plans for an Alabama High School Mathematics Contest were initiated by ACTM

and AACTM as joint sponsors and Gary Harper, Mathematics Supervisor of the Birmingham Public Schools, as chairman. It was designed to extend appeal of existing competitions to a wider segment of good mathematics students. The first contest took place during the Spring of 1981. It involved only a comprehensive division with plans to include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Eighth Grade Mathematics in future contests.

Purposes of Mathematics Contest--Quoted from Contest Flyer

1) To stimulate interest in mathematics by encouraging more students to include mathematics in their program of study, and thereby to raise the level of mathematical competence in the state of Alabama.

2) To honor those students who are outstanding in their knowledge of mathematics through appropriate public recognition in their schools in their communities.

The Contest is conducted as an academic festival where students represent their school in competition with others at a nearby testing center. These students compete with each other for preeminence in their District. Then selected students compete for recognition at the state level.

Yearly--Written Contests in Districts

State Ciphering Matches in a central location.
