Adora:!! Sharemsha.

Sharemsha:! Yes, miss?

Adora:!!

I need some shade from the sun. Go get that palm tree over there and bring it here so I! ! can sit under itʼs shade.

Sharemsha:! Yes, miss.

Adora:!! Over there (pointing).

Sharemsha:! Yes, miss. Iʼll get it for you. (stops abruptly) What? And would the Princess Adora like! ! me to climb the tree to pick her a coconut?

Adora:!! No. Donʼt climb. You must fly!

Sharemsha:! I am very sorry to disappoint the Princess but my wings are at the repair shop being! ! re-feathered.

Adora:!! I sure fooled you. I wanted to see if you were awake.

Sharemsha:! I am now, miss.

Adora:!! Good. We can play the double-cross word game.

Sharemsha:! Not now, please, miss. Isnʼt your brain tired? Youʼve just had your reading and writing

! ! lesson.

Adora:!! No, Iʼm not tired. Iʼm ready. Letʼs play Sharemsha.

! ! ! THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING! ! ! CANʼT IMAGINE MY LIVING WITHOUT IT! ! ! TRYʼN TO THINK WOULD BE VERY HARD! ! ! AND ISNʼT IT A WONDERFUL THING

! ! ! IʼM ALWAYS USING MY MIND

! ! ! AND I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DOUBT IT! ! ! BUT DEEP INSIDE THIS CURLY HEAD! ! ! THEREʼS A MOST UNUSUAL THING! ! ! YES THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

! ! Do you agree, Sharemsha?

Page 4: Aladdin & Adora

Sharemsha:! Yes, miss.

Adora:!! ! WHENEVER I GET AN IDEA! ! ! KNOW EXACTLY THE PLACE THAT IT CAME FROM

! ! ! RIGHT BETWEEN THESE EARS OF MINE! ! ! AND ISNʼT IT A WONDERFUL THING

! ! ! YOU THINK IʼM LOSING MY MIND! ! ! AND YOU FEEL THAT YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT IT! ! ! BUT RIGHT BEHIND THIS NOSE OF MINE! ! ! THEREʼS A MOST FANTASTICAL THING! ! ! YES THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

Sharemsha:! Well my brain is tired, miss. I have just been trying to think of two things at the same! ! time.

Adora:!! What two things?

Sharemsha:! I donʼt remember

! ! ! MY BRAIN IS TIRED! ! ! TOO MANY YEARS OF BRILLIANT THINKING! ! ! NEARLY EXPIRED! ! ! OVERGROWN WITH LOTS OF SONGS I USED TO SING! ! ! BUT THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

! ! !! ! ! IʼM FILLED WITH COBWEBS! ! ! WITH MY MIND I CAN DO HARDLY ANYTHING! ! ! BUT THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

Both:! ! ! WITHOUT OUR THINKING I KNOW WEʼD BE! ! ! BACK IN A STONE-AGE MENTALITY! ! ! USE YOUR BRAIN OR IT WILL BE SAID! ! ! YOUʼRE OUT OF YOUR MIND, OUT OF YOUR HEAD!

! ! !

Adora:!! Oh, Sharemsha, youʼre just no fun today.

Sharemsha:! Iʼm sorry, miss.

Adora:! ! THE BRAIN IS THE CLEVEREST THINGSharemsha:! ! IF I ONLY WOULD KNOW HOW TO USE ITAdora:!! ! JUST LET IT GO FOR ALL YOU KNOWSharemsha:! ! IT WILL LEARN ABOUT ANYTHINGʼ!

Both:! ! ! YES THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

Sharemsha:! ! IʼM FILLED WITH COBWEBS! ! ! WITH MY MIND I CAN DO HARDLY ANYTHING! ! ! BUT THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

Both simultaneously:

Adora:!! ! THE BRAIN IS THE CLEVEREST THING! ! ! IF WE ONLY WOULD KNOW HOW TO USE IT! ! ! JUST LET IT GO FOR ALL YOU KNOW

! ! ! IT WILL LEARN ABOUT ANYTHINGʼ!

! ! ! YES THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

Sharemsha:! ! IʼM FILLED WITH COBWEBS! ! ! WITH MY MIND I CAN DO HARDLY ANYTHING! ! ! BUT THE BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING

Both:! ! ! OH SUCH A WONDERFUL! ! ! YES SUCH A WONDERFUL THING! ! ! ! ! !

Adora:!! But Iʼm so bored. And I donʼt want to play word games with my maidservant anyway. I! !  just want to run and jump and play, and go exploring the world for adventure. Like other! ! children.

Sharemsha:! You know your father, the Sultan, will not permit it.

Adora:!! But, why?

Sharemsha:! Because your father is Mustafa the Magnificent, Sultan of Arabia, and you are the

! ! Princess Budrulbadora, the Unpronounceable, his only child. You cannot play with! ! common children. Itʼs not suitable for a princess like yourself -- not fitting to mingle with! ! the sons and daughters of merchants and tailors, cooks and camel drivers. Thatʼs what! ! your father says.

Adora:!! A tailorʼs business is fitting and suitable -- fitting suits on suitable customers. A princess

! ! business is having fun. And Iʼm not having any!

Sharemsha:! You live in a palace and have as much as you want to eat. You have a pet camel and a! ! pet parrot and a room full of toys and playthings. What more could you want?

Adora:!!

I want playmates. I just want to play with other children. Whatʼs wrong with that?

Sharemsha:! It is forbidden.

Adora:!! Then I shall run away again.

Sharemsha:! You mustnʼt do that miss.!

Adora:!! I will run away again. Youʼll see.

Sharemsha:! Letʼs go home to the palace now, miss.

Adora:!! No. I want to go to the next oasis where they have sweet water and children play beside! ! the bullrushes.

(She bites the hand of the guard who has been holding her, fakes one way then runs off the other.Sharemsha and Guard turn circles looking for her.)

Sharemsha:! You there, (pointing to a child in the audience) did you see which way did she went? (Sh! ! and guard run off to follow Adora, bumping into Abanazar as he enters)

Abanazar:! (entering-- he is dressed in hooded cloak and carries a map and a sack filled with

! ! surveyor's tools. He skulks around looking for something and takes tools from the sack)! ! This is it. Itʼs got to be.

Suleiman:! (From offstage) Make way for the Sultan. Make way for Mustafa the Magnificent, Sultan! ! of Arabia.

(Abanazar starts to gather his tools as Suleiman, carrying an umbrella and small rug, followed by Mustafa covered by a canopy held by two guards who are fanning him with large feather fans enter.Suleiman approaches Abanazar who is hunched over his tools)

Suleiman:! Make way for the Sultan. Make way for the Sultan.

(Abanazar sidles over and Suleiman follows and approaches him from different direction)

Suleiman:! Make way for Mustafa the Magnificent, Sultan of Arabia.

(Abanazar moves aside again but Suleiman follows and approaches him from yet another direction)

Suleiman:! I, Suleiman, Grand Vizier to his Magnificence the Sultan, command you to make way!

(This movement and commands continue. Mustafa, being followed by the guards and tickled by the fans, moves aside in synchrony with Abanazar and develops an uncontrollable giggling fit.)

Suleiman:! Make way for his Magnificence...his Opulence...his Munificence...his Wonderfulness...

Mustafa:! (laughing uncontrollably) Stop it! Stop it! I canʼt stand it! I canʼt take it anymore. (The ! ! guards stop fanning)

Suleiman:! His specialness...

Mustafa:! Cease and desist this instant, I said.

Suleiman:! His Trustworthiness...

Mustafa:! Heal and sit! (The guards, dropping the canopy, sit at his feet. He absent-mindedly pats! ! their heads) Not you. Up. Up. (They rise and resume position holding canopy)

Suleiman:! His Bountifulness...

Mustafa:! Will the Honorable Grand Vizier kindly...KNOCK IT OFF!

Suleiman:! But I was only...

Mustafa:! Thatʼs quite all right, dear fellow. Itʼs all true. Every word of it. And we know you could

! ! go on for hours reciting my many fine virtues and qualities. But we have business here! ! and the sun races like a chariot across the sky...and youʼre giving me a headache.

Suleiman:! Yes your Magnificence.

Mustafa:! (Approaching Abanazar) Looking for oil? Weʼve got plenty here in Arabia, lamp capital o! ! the world. Thatʼs all itʼs good for...burning in lamps.

Abanazar:! Yes, your Incredibleness, it was oil I was seeking. But there is none here. Thatʼs what! ! my investigations tell me.

Mustafa:! No drilling. It makes my teeth hurt. Are you a prospector? Wait, donʼt tell me. Youʼre a! ! businessman, I can tell. Lamps. You must want oil for lamps. A lamp factory. You mus! ! want to build a lamp factory. This is just the place. Prime industrial sites available,! ! practically for the asking.

Abanazar:! I am a tourist, your Avariciousness. I am a visitor in your land.

Page 8: Aladdin & Adora

Mustafa:! You have come to see our attractions?

Abanazar:! Yes, your ...

Mustafa:!

I am it! I am the only attraction!

Abanazar:! Yes, your Attractiveness.

Mustafa: ! Do you want a fashion show?

! ! ! WEALTH AND FINERY, THAT IS ALL IʼVE EVER KNOWN! ! ! SINCE I SAT ON DADDYʼS KNEE! ! ! GAVE ME WEALTH AND FINERY

! ! ! IN THE FANCY CLOTHES I WEAR

! ! ! I LOOK GREAT AND OH SO SHEIK! ! ! IʼM AN ELEGANT AFFAIR! ! ! AND I FEEL SO DEBONAIR! ! ! IF I WEAR ALL MY DIAMONDS, RUBIES AND GOLD! ! ! IʼD BE SO BRIGHT AND GLITTERY! ! ! BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN, IʼM TOLD THAT

! ! ! WEALTH AND FINERY! ! ! THEY ALL LOOK SO ELEGANT! ! ! WHEN THEYʼRE SURROUNDING ME

! ! ! IʼLL ALWAYS NEED A LOT OF IT

! ! ! CANʼT DO WITH JUST A LITTLE BIT! ! ! I NEED MY WEALTH AND FINERY

Suleiman:! ! LET THERE BE NO DOUBT! ! ! FANCY AND EXPENSIVE THINGS! ! ! THATʼS WHAT HE KNOWS ALL ABOUT! ! ! AND CANNOT DO WITHOUT

Mustafa: ! ! THE THINGS THAT I POSSESS! ! ! ARE ABSOLUTELY MINIMUM

! ! ! AND I COULD NOT DO WITH LESS! ! ! AND STILL HAVE HAPPINESS

Suleiman:! ! HEʼS GOT A BUNCH OF CAMELS TO TAKE HIM AROUND! ! ! AND SERVANTS WHO CAN CARRY HIM! ! ! INEVER HAS TO TOUCH THE GROUND

Mustafa:! ! UNLESS I WANT TO BE! ! ! CLOSE TO ALLT HE GORGEOUS THINGS! ! ! THAT WANT TO BE CLOSE TO ME

Both:! ! ! IʼLL/HE

ʼLL ALWAYS NEED A LOT OF IT

! ! ! CANʼT DO WITH JUST A LITTLE BIT! ! ! I/HE NEED(S) MY WEALTH AND FINERY.

! ! ! WEALTH AND FINERY!Mustafa:! And now that youʼve seen the chief and only attraction of our blessed land, namely me,! ! you must go along to the tourist beach.

Suleiman:! Tourist beach that way. Make way for the tourist beach.

Abanazar:! What beach? This is a dessert.

Mustafa:! Suleiman, tell him.

Suleiman:! I, Suleiman, Grand Vizier to his Beachiness, Mustafa the Magnificent, Sultan of Arabia,! ! declare for all to hear that this is the Sultanʼs private beach. Tourist beach that way.

Abanazar:! But there is no sea or lake. No water.

Mustafa:! But there is more than enough sand to make up for the missing water. And plenty of oil.

Abanazar:! Just as you say, your Ostentatiousness.

Mustafa:! Come again when you have more money to spend. And think about that lamp factory.

Abanazar:! I will.

Suleiman:! Tourist beach that way.

Abanazar:! Iʼm going, Iʼm going. (he exits)

Mustafa:! And now I must meditate and take counsel with he spirits of the air and the sand...and o! ! Suleiman, the carpet.

(Suleiman spreads the carpet and Mustafa sits to meditate. He starts to doze off, swaying one way anthen another as the guards are jerkily shifting the canopy to keep him in the shade. Suleiman, opeinghis umbrella, hooks the curved handle over his arms which are folded in front of him so the umbrella hangs open and upside down. He dozes.)

Aladdin:! (offstage) Heyoo! Heyoo! (He enters at high speed. He tumbles and and stops in front ! ! of Suleiman, almost knocking him over)

Suleiman:! (awakening) Make way! Make way!

Mustafa:!

(awakening) Quiet, Suleiman. (To Aladdin) And who might you be?

Aladdin:! Iʼm Aladdin. Who are you?

Mustafa:! The Sultan. Canʼt you tell?

Aladdin:! You have nice clothes.

Mustafa:! Thanks. They come with the job.

Aladdin:! (To Suleiman) Iʼm sorry I ran into you. My nameʼs Aladdin. Whatʼs yours?

Suleiman:! Make way. Make way for the...

Mustafa:! Cool it! (To Aladdin) He is the Grand Vizier. And his mouth works better than his ears.

Aladdin:! Why does he hold the umbrella like that?

Mustafa:! To catch the rain, of course. Should any fall, he will catch it, we will bottle it and sell it! ! around the world as an elixir of great quality and efficaciousness. We will call it Aqua! ! Arabia and foreigners will pay dearly for bottled water. Iʼll be richer that rich. Iʼll be! ! wealthy!

Aladdin”! Oh.

Mustafa:! Excuse me while I sunbathe. (He exposes small patches of skin here and there as he ! ! darts out from under the canopy for quick, short exposures.) One must be careful to! ! avoid over-exposure. And who is your family. Aladdin?

Aladdin:! I have none.

Mustafa:! No mother or father?

Aladdin:! Neither.

Mustafa:! No sisters or brothers?

Aladdin:! I am alone.

1

Mustafa:! But where do you live?

Aladdin:! I live with the camel drivers, and travel with the caravans.

Mustafa:! So you have been to faraway places?

Aladdin:! All over.

Mustafa:! Donʼt forget to take a toothbrush, and floss.

Aladdin:! I wonʼt. Did you see a fox run by? I was chasing a fox.

Mustafa:! He ran off that way, between the Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

Aladdin: ! I must find him. Bye.

Mustafa:!

Bye.

(Aladdin exits. Mustafa continues to sunbathe. Sharemsha runs on, stops abruptly, walks to Suleimaand whispers in his ear.

Suleiman:! What?

Sharemsha:! Adora has run away again.

Suleiman:! Oh.

Sharemsha:!

Tell the Sultan.

Suleiman:! Yes, dear. (He goes and whispers in Mustafa ̓   s ear)

Mustafa:! What? Run away? Again? Where is Sharemsha?

Sharemsha:! Here, sir.

Mustafa:! You are supposed to keep her in hand. I even gave you a guard.

Sharemsha:! Iʼm sorry, sir. She is so clever, sir, like yourself, that she outwitted us.

Mustafa:! Youʼre right there. Chip off the old blockhead. How did she do it this time?

Sharemsha:! The guard held her hand as we walked among the camels at the oasis. She bit his hand! ! then she ran between the legs of the camels and got away. She was too fast for us.! ! (S)he (pointing to the same child as before) told us she ran that way.

Mustafa:! (To that child) Is that right? We must find her. (They all run off)

Abanazar: ! (Entering) Beware your boastfulness, Sultan of Arabia. Interfere with me again and I! ! shall have you turned into a grain of sand, right here on your own beach. You beware, I

! ! am the magic... (He flings back his hood to reveal his sinister and bizarre appearance.)

! ! ! I AM THE MAGIC, THE MYSTIC, THE MAN! ! ! WHO HOLDS ALL THE MYSTERY OF LIFE IN HIS WICKED HAND! ! ! THE TERROR, THE EVIL, DECIDER AM I

! ! ! OF WHO WILL BE HAPPY AND! ! ! WHOSE HOPES AND DREAMS WILL DIE

! ! ! WHEN I WORK THE MAGIC! ! ! ON UNSUSPECTING CREATURES

! ! ! I TURN THEM INTO MONSTERS! ! ! WITH UN-GODLY FEATURES! ! ! AND NO ONE KNOWS! ! ! NO ONE KNOWS WHY

! ! ! TONIGHT WHEN YOU ARE SLEEPING! ! ! AND PLEASANTLY DREAMING! ! ! IʼLL TURN INTO A NIGHTMARE! ! ! AND YOUʼLL WAKE UP SCREAMING! ! ! AND NO ONE KNOWS! ! ! NO ONE KNOWS WHY

! ! ! I AM THE MAGIC, THE MYSTIC, THE MAN! ! ! WHO HOLDS ALL THE MYSTERY OF LIFE IN HIS WICKED HAND! ! ! THE TERROR, THE EVIL, DECIDER AM I

! ! ! OF WHO WILL BE HAPPY AND! ! ! WHOSE HOPES AND DREAMS WILL DIE

! ! Beware, stay out of my way, or Iʼll turn your body into a lump of clay and I ʼll grind your! ! bones into dust. I am the magic! (He holds his hand high. On his finger is a large ring).! !

And now, the moment Iʼve been waiting for. Now we

ʼll see. (He kisses the ring)

Rincon:! (She enters in a puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  ) What is your wish,! ! master? I am Rincon, the genie of the ring and slave of he who kisses the ring, unseen! ! and unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

1

Page 13: Aladdin & Adora

Abanazar:! Tell me, genie, is this the place where Iʼll find the magic lamp which will make me the! ! richest and most powerful potentate in all the world?

Rincon:! This is the place, master.

Abanazar:!

Where is the lamp?

Rincon:! It is in the cavern beneath the desert sands. Inside the cavern is an orchard whose tree! ! produce fruit made of precious gems. Within the orchard is a grotto. There you will find! ! the lamp.

Abanazar:! Bring it to me.

Rincon:! I cannot.

Abanazar:! Why not?

Rincon:! It is forbidden.

Abanazar:! Then take me to it.

Rincon:! I cannot. It is forbidden.

Abanazar:! You mean you canʼt go down there?

Rincon:! No, Master, it...

Abanazar:!

I know, I know, it is forbidden.

Rincon:! Yes, Master.

Abanazar:! How may I obtain the lamp?

Rincon:! Only someone who is without greed may take the lamp from the grotto.

Abanazar:! That leaves me out. But there is nothing stopping me from taking the lamp away from th! ! fool who is without greed, is there? Or is that forbidden too?

Rincon:! No, Master. It is not forbidden.

Abanazar:! I didnʼt think so. Is there anything else about this cave I should know?

Rincon:! Whoever enters the cave may pick the gem-fruit from the trees but must not touch the! ! chest full of gold coins or anything on it.

1

Page 14: Aladdin & Adora

8/3/2019 Aladdin & Adora

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/aladdin-adora 14/47

Abanazar:! Good, good. Iʼll keep that in mind. Now, how will I find someone without greed?

Rincon:! You must ask them: “what is a lamp and what is a ring?” if they answer that both are! ! objects of high value, they are unworthy to seek the lamp.

Abanazar:! So whatʼs the right answer?

Rincon:! You must judge.

Abanazar:! I must judge? But I̓ m greedy. How can I judge?

Rincon:! Genies act, not think. Thereʼs a link. Thatʼs a fact.

Abanazar:! Is this another one of your riddles?

Rincon:!

Genies perform tasks, big and small. Then they must await recall.

Abanazar:! All right, all right. You want a task? Iʼll give you one. Show me the caveʼs entrance.

Rincon:! It is there. (She points to behind the rock which somehow opens -- with a puff of smoke ! ! or flash of light and musical tinkle she is off -- Abanazar inspects the opening when...)

Sharemsha:! (from off stage) Adora! Adora! (She enters and sees Abanazar who is covering up in his! ! cloak and cowl). Oh, sir. Have you seen a young girl pass this way?

Abanazar:! No, I havenʼt. But, dear lady, one good question deserves another. If you answer my

! ! question I will give you this gold coin.

Sharemsha:! If I answer, you will give me the coin?

Abanazar:! Any honest answer will earn you the coin.

Sharemsha:! Is there a trick?

Abanazar:! No trick.

Sharemsha:! What is the question?

Abanazar:! What is a lamp and what is a ring.

Sharemsha:! Thatʼs two questions.

1

Page 15: Aladdin & Adora

8/3/2019 Aladdin & Adora

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/aladdin-adora 15/47

Abanazar:! All right, all right. Two questions. Two coins for two questions. All or nothing. Now,! ! whatʼs your answer. What is a lamp and what is a ring?

Sharemsha:! A lamp is a household treasure. My master has many for hi is rich. A ring is a valuable! ! ornament and may be a setting for jewels. Now my I have my coins?

Abanazar:! No, you greedy wench.

Sharemsha:! But I did what you asked -- I answered the questions.

Abanazar:! Dishonest answers.

Sharemsha:! It was the truth! But you wouldnʼt know the difference anyway, Adora! (exiting)

Aladdin:! (from off stage) Heyoo! Heyoo! (Abanazar hides as he enters) Where are you little fox?! ! Hiding from Aladdin? I am a foxʼs friend and only want to stroke your soft fur. But youʼre

! ! a free spirit, like me. You go where you wish and do what you want... (looking off stage)! ! but who comes here? A pretty girl! I think I will surprise her. (He hides behind another ! ! tree . He and Abanazar each peek around opposite sides as Adora enters.)

Adora:!! I know this place with the big boulder. (Aladdin & Abanazar duck their heads back) I wa! ! here this morning with Sharemsha and the guard who was holding my hand so hard, I bi! ! him. I hope I didnʼt hurt his hand. But it feels so good to be free. Now I can play with! ! other children.(A sneeze is heard from behind the boulder) Whoʼs there?

Aladdin:! (Coming out from hiding) Hi. Iʼm Aladdin. Whatʼs your name.

Adora:!!

I am Princess Budrulbadora, the Unpronounceable.!

Aladdin:! Bubrubara...Burduble....

Adora:!! See. I told you -- unpronounceable. Just call me Adora? Will you be my friend?

Aladdin:! You mean on Facebook?

Adora:!! Whatʼs that?

Aladdin:! I donʼt know.

Adora:!! What are you doing here?

Aladdin:! Chasing a fox.

Adora:!! (Laughing) Did you catch it?

1

Page 16: Aladdin & Adora

8/3/2019 Aladdin & Adora

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/aladdin-adora 16/47

Aladdin:! No. Why do you laugh?

Adora:!! I was chased by a camel today.

Aladdin:!

Did it catch you?

Adora:!! Yes.

Aladdin:! And what happened?

Adora:!! It gave me a sloppy kiss. I have a pet camel named Ali. I ride him here sometimes.

Aladdin:! Letʼs pretend youʼre riding him now and Iʼm riding my camel.

Adora:!! Do you have a pet camel too?

Aladdin:! Just a make-believe one.

Adora:!! Whatʼs his name?

Aladdin:! Bazra...and heʼs fast as the wind.

Adora:!! Letʼs play ...

Abanazar:! (Coming out from hiding) Children, children. I know a wonderful game you can play.

Adora:!!

Who are you?

Abanazar:! I am a philosopher from a far away land across the desert.

Aladdin:! What do you want of us?

Abanazar:! Just to suggest a wonderful game we can play. An exciting adventure. But first, dear,! ! sweet children, I want to ask you a question, and, if you can answer it for me I ʼll give you! ! each a shiny coin.

Adora:!! I donʼt want your coin.

Aladdin:! Nor do I.

Adora:!! But I will try to answer your question.

Aladdin:! Me too. And I would like to hear of your adventure.

1

Page 17: Aladdin & Adora

Adora:!! Me too.

(Abanazar moves them DR -- traveler closes and I-2 is set)

Abanazar:!

Good, good. You are two likely prospects for the adventure already. But first the! ! question. Itʼs simple enough. What is a lamp and what is a ring?

Aladdin:! Thatʼs easy. A lamp holds the sunʼs flame and lights a room the way the sun lights the! ! world.

Adora:!! And a ring is the sound a bell makes when it calls the righteous to prayer.

Abanazar:! Wonderful, wonderful. Thatʼs it. Itʼs got to be. You must be the ones to join me in this! ! adventure. Come and I will tell you of it. (They sit on either side of Abanazar)

( Musical transition -- Lights fade out t o show passage of time then up high DR and up to 3/4 from C toL with a strong beam from R to L )

Act I, Scene 2(The interior of the enchanted cavern -- Adora & Aladdin are looking about)

Adora: ! Look! Aladdin, look. Isnʼt it beautiful?

Aladdin:! Splendiferous!

Adora:!! Fruits and berries.

Aladdin:! And each one a gem.

Abanazar:! (Shouting from outside the cavern DR) Fruits and berries later, children. Find the lamp ! ! the grotto.

Adora:!! Sparkling, ruby-re raspberries.!

Aladdin:! And dark green blueberries with flecks of red!Adora:!! Bloodstone blueberries. And here, Aladdin, sapphire strawberries. Deep. Shiny blue.

Aladdin:! Blue strawberries?

Abanazar:! Get that lamp!

Ad & Al:! Yes, sir!

(They start to search for the grotto when Adora ̓   s attention is diverted and attracted by the chest and apple atop it. She walks slowly up to the chest and, inspecting the apple at close range...)

Adora:!! Aladdin. Iʼve found the best fruit of all...the kind you can eat...an actual apple.

Abanazar:!

What?

Aladdin:! What apple?

Adora:!! Here it sits on the chest.

Abanazar:! The chest? An apple on the chest? Donʼt go near it.

Adora:!! Come and see, Aladdin.

Abanazar:! Donʼt touch that apple! The lamp, children. Get the lamp.

Adora:!! But Iʼm hungry. Are you hungry, Aladdin?

Aladdin:! Iʼm always hungry.

Abanazar:! Hunger first, lamp later. I mean, lamp later, hunger first.

Adora:!! Letʼs eat.

Abanazar:! No. I mean, lamp first, hunger later.

Adora:!!

But Iʼm hungry now.

Aladdin:! Me too.

Adora:!! And Iʼll just pick the apple off the chest. I wonʼt even touch the chest.

Abanazar:! No. Princess, forgo the fruit. Forsake it. It is forbidden. Instead, return to the beautiful! ! bushes and trees laden with gem fruit and pick all you can carry. You, Aladdin, find thel! ! lamp. Then you may do the same. And with the gem fruit from the magic orchard in the! ! desert cavern, you can buy caravans, whole camel trains laden with fruit from many! ! lands. Apples from Acre, Apricots from Antioch, Grapes from Gilgamesh, Persimmons

! ! from Persepolis, Tamarinds from Tyre, Lemons from the Levant.

Aladdin:! I found it! I have it! Look.

Abanazar:! Oh, fabulous. Oh, wonderful. Oh, rapture.

Adora:!! Itʼs dirty.

Abanazar:! Well, who cares if itʼs dirty? Bring it here immediately.

Aladdin:! Itʼs a plain little lamp. A peasantʼs lamp or a slaveʼs.

Abanazar:! Bring it here I say.

Aladdin:! But you said we could pick the gem fruit.

Abanazar:! First, hand me up the lamp.

Aladdin:! Fruit first, lamp later.

Abanazar:! Pick, pick. But hurry. I havenʼt got all day. (They run around picking the gem fruit.) Are! ! you two through?

Aladdin:! Weʼre ready.

Abanazar:! Then come on out.

(They head toward the light beam which is the opening but Adora ̓   s attention is again drawn to the apple. She heads toward the chest)

Aladdin:! We are ready to come out of the cave, Abanazar.

Abanazar:! Good, good. Hand me the lamp up first.

Adora:!! Aladdin! (She picks up the apple -- light beam narrows and thunder sound  ) Come,! ! have a bite of the apple.

Abanazar:! What? The apple?

Aladdin:! Letʼs go now Adora.

Abanazar:! Give me the lamp! now! (Adora takes a bite of the apple -- light narrows more and ! ! thunder sound is more menacing  ) Come here with the lamp, Aladdin.

Adora:!! Itʼs good. (She hands the apple to Aladdin who takes a bite).

Aladdin:! Thanks. (More sound and darkness)

Abanazar:! No! Hurry, bring the lamp. (They realize that the cave entrance is closing, leave the hal! ! eaten apple on the chest and rush for the light source. Hurry, take my hand.

Adora:!! (Heading through the opening) Aladdin!

(Adora is pulled out of the cave by Abanazar just before it closes -- beam goes out -- another loud rumble. The  cave is now dim but center special comes up . Aladdin, left alone feels around and trips

over things trying to see)

Aladdin: ! Adora! Donʼt leave me. Abanazar! Open the entranceway. Let me out. I have the lam! ! Help! Anyone? Now Iʼve done it. How will I get out of here? Iʼm trapped. Maybe,! ! forever. Maybe...Iʼll end up in here. Help! You, little lamp, dirty and plain, are more! ! valuable to me in a dark cave than all these treasures -- because you can light my way! ! out of here...if there is a way out. (He moves to the chest and opens the lid) And all the! ! gold and silver in this chest cannot buy this slaveʼs lamp. (Feeling inside) What? What?! ! Empty. Full of air. What a cruel joke. Abanazar lied!

! ! !

Abanazar:!

(With Adora whose hands are bound together and tied to his belt. Aladdin eats what ʼ   s le

! ! of the apple) You, Princess, and your little friend have cheated me out of the lamp. A! ! curse on your greedy heads.

Adora:!! We were not greedy, just hungry.

Abanazar:! If you werenʼt greedy, why did you pick the gem fruit?

Adora:!! Because itʼs pretty.

Abanazar:! Nonsense!

Adora:!! My father is the Sultan. He is very wealthy. I have no need of the gem fruit. I only! ! wanted it for its beauty.

Abanazar:! Iʼll turn your beauty into riches unsurpassed by the fruit of the gem trees. You shall see.! ! shall ransom you back to your wealthy father for a small fortune, maybe a large! ! fortune. (He takes quill and paper from his tunic and begins to write) And now to the! ! terms.

Adora:!! Please, please, Abanazar. My father will pay you what you want if only you will return m! ! to him and release Aladdin from the cave.

Abanazar:! You I will return, for the right price. Aladdin I cannot release from the cave even if I! ! wanted to, which I donʼt. He has buried himself in his eternal tomb because he ate the! ! apple. And you helped put him there. In fact, you encouraged him to eat in the first! ! place.

Aladdin:! Is it possible?

Both:! ! ! COULD IT BE THAT I LOVE YOU?

Abanazar:! Now be still while I finish writing your ransom note.

Adora:!! (Crying) You are a cruel wizard, Abanazar.

Abanazar:! No kidding. Now Iʼll just sign this “Aladdin of the Caravans”!

Adora:!! You scoundrel!

Abanazar:! I shall be a cruel and rich scoundrel, Princess. (He kisses the ring)

Abanazar:! Oh just hold your tongue! (Rincon sticks out tongue and holds it) Donʼt do that. Must yo! ! be so literal? Do you have to do absolutely everything I say?

Rincon:! (She lets go of tongue) Yes, Master.

Abanazar:! Except that which is forbidden.

Rincon:! Yes, Master.

Abanazar:! You genies must have a good union contract.

Rincon:! Yes, Master.

Abanazar:!

Yes, indeed. But for now, if itʼs not too much trouble, would you please, pretty please, ju

Rincon:! (Exiting with the note puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  ) As you wish,! ! Master.

Abanazar:! Now we shall see, Princess, what your beauty is worth. If you are indeed your father̓ s! ! treasure, he will think nothing of parting with some of his precious wealth to get you back! ! (He kisses the ring again -- Rincon enters puff of smoke or flash of light and musical ! ! tinkle  )

Rincon:!

What is your wish Master? I am Rincon, the genie of the ring and slave of he who kisse! ! the ring, unseen and unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

Abanazar:! If youʼre quite through, perhaps youʼll answer this question: Did you give the Sultan the! ! ransom note?

Rincon:! Yes, Master. I put it under his nose while he was meditating in the desert.

Abanazar:! You mean on the beach.

Adora:!! Who are you talking to?

Abanazar:! Not to you, small stuff -- so hold your tongue. No -- donʼt hold your tongue. Just donʼt! ! use it. (To Rincon) Genie, transport me and this greedy princess to my palace in Anatoli

Rincon:! Your wish is my command, Master. (/all 3 exit)

Act II, Scene 1(The interior of the enchanted cavern)

( Lights up to 1/3 with a special center on Aladdin  )

Aladdin:! (Curled up asleep next to the chest, clutching the lamp -- he wakens) Oh no. It was not! !  just a bad dream. It is as dark when Iʼm awake as it is when Iʼm asleep.

! ! ! SOMETIMES IʼM A LITTLE BIT SCARED, ARE YOU?! ! ! MAYBE THEREʼS A MOMENT WHEN YOUʼRE FRIGHTENED TOO! ! ! HOW CAN I SAY THAT IʼM BRAVE AND STRONG?! ! ! HOW CAN I FEEL RIGHT AND SOMETIMES BE WRONG?

One apple. Not some amethyst apple, or another precious jewel, but a good! ! olʼ apple good enough to eat. The kind mamas make apple pie out of and politicians! ! make hay out of. But these jewels I cannot eat. And they will not buy me real fruit! ! for I see no fruit vendors here. Or anyone else either. In fact, I see nothing here at all,

! ! not even my nose in front of me. This is not the bazaar or the camel market or the oasis! ! of the fountains. This is a deep, dark cave. Itʼs where Iʼm...stuck. For now -- and Iʼm! ! scared. So what good to me here is fruit I canʼt eat? (he tosses the gem fruit he was ! ! holding and while doing so the lamp falls to the floor. He moves around trying to find it)! ! Where are you little lamp? Iʼll find you. If I could find some oil somewhere, maybe you! ! can light my way out of here. But first I must find a way to find a light to light you, that is i! ! (Spot picks up Lampon -- gelled in some warm color)

Lampon:! ! I AM THE GENIE OF THE LAMP … LIGHT

Aladdin:! WOW! Heyoo! Heyoo! Itʼs good to see you. And I can see you too. Just like daytime.

Lampon:! Yes, master.

Aladdin:! Well, my nameʼs Aladdin. What did you say your name was?

Lampon:! Lampon, master. My friends call me Cookie.

Aladdin:! Great. Can I call you Cookie too?

Lampon:! No, master.

Aladdin:! Why not?

Lampon:! It is forbidden. Union rules. You have to be another genie.

Aladdin:!

Alright. Whatever you say. But in that case, you can call me Master.

Lampon:! I will, master. (there is an awkward pause)

Aladdin:! Well, what do we do now?

Lampon:! Your wish is my command, master. I will do whatever you tell me to do.

Aladdin:! Anything?

Lampon:! Anything -- almost.

Aladdin:! Almost?

Lampon:! Yes, master.

Aladdin:! Can you fill this chest with gold and silver coins? Please.

Lampon:! Yes, master. (he does nothing -- another pause)

Aladdin:! Well?

Lampon:! It is done, master. Look inside the chest.

Aladdin:! (He feels inside the chest and pulls out a handful of coins) Wow! You werenʼt kidding.! ! Here are rich coins of many lands.

Lampon:! Doubloons and ducats; piastres, florins and crowns.

Lampon:! Taxes, master.

Aladdin:! Oh, I forgot. (Lampon disappears taking light with him -- musical rumble  ) What? Itʼs dar! ! again. Lampon? Are you there? (pause) No answer. Heʼs gone. Now, again little lamp! ! will clean you with my tunic and rub you with my hands so Lampon will return -- I hope.

Lampon: ! (Entering in a flash and well lit -- musical rumble  ) What is your wish master? I am! ! Lampon, the genie of the lamp and slave of him who strokes the lamp, unseen and! ! unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

Aladdin:! Hi! Glad youʼre back, Lampon. Can you get me out of here?

Lampon:!

You have but to command it, master.

Aladdin:! I command you to get me out of here and set me free. ( light beam on again and thunde! ! sound -- Aladdin “climbs out with lamp & Lampon exits as lights come up DR & cave goe! ! dark  ) Thanks, Lampon. Thanks a lot. Now where are Abanazar and Adora? (segues in! ! next scene as set is being changed)

Act II, Scene 2(The oasis)

Aladdin:! Iʼm free at last. And you, little lamp, have saved me. You and Lampon. This is where

! ! Abanazar, that evil wizard, tricked Adora and me into finding the lamp for him so he coul! ! take it and bury us both in the cave. He failed. I have you, little lamp. But he has Adora! ! I must rescue her with Lamponʼs help. (he rubs the lamp)

Lampon:! (Entering in a flash and well lit -- musical rumble  ) What is your wish master? I am! ! Lampon, the genie of the lamp and slave of him who strokes the lamp, unseen and! ! unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

Aladdin:! Hello, again.

Lampon:! Hello, master.

Aladdin:! And thanks again for getting me out of that cave. I was a little bit scared that Iʼd! ! never see the sun again.

Lampon:! You are most welcome, master.

Aladdin:! Can you tell me where is the Princess Burbrubra...

Lampon:! Who, master?

Aladdin:! Adora. Can you tell me where she is?

Lampon:! Yes I can, master. You have but to ask.

Aladdin:! Alright. Where is Adora?

Lampon:! She is the prisoner of the wicked wizard Abanazar in his palace in Anatolia.

Aladdin:! But that is far away over the desert. A journey of many months by caravan. How did the! ! get there?

Lampon:! Another genie took them, master.

Aladdin:! Can you bring Adora back to me?

Lampon:! No, master.

Aladdin:! But you said you could do anything.

Lampon:! Almost anything, master.

Aladdin:! Almost anything that is not forbidden.

Lampon:!

Yes, master.

Aladdin:! But why is it forbidden?

Lampon:! We donʼt usually explain that part.

Aladdin:! Union rules?

Lampon:! Yes, master. But seeing as how youʼre such a cool dude, Iʼll just tell you that she is unde! ! the power of another genie, whom the wizard has commanded to guard her. And we! ! genies donʼt interfere with one anotherʼs tasks. Union rules again.

Aladdin:! I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Lampon:! Youʼre welcome, master. Donʼt tell anyone I told you.

Aladdin:! My lips are sealed. But look, can you take me to Adora?

Mustafa:! Next I suppose youʼll tell me that if you canʼt read, then you canʼt write either. So how

! ! could you have written this ransom note? Is that it?

Aladdin:! Yes, sir.

Mustafa:! A likely story.

Sharemsha:! Likely indeed.

Suleiman:! I still like your story. What happens next?

Aladdin:! I am just a poor orphan boy, sir, who never went to school to learn to read and write and

! ! other things. But Iʼm smart anyway, and lucky too. And I blow with the wind.

Mustafa:! Your luck just ran out. Weʼll see how much wind you can find to blow in the royal! ! dungeon, which is where you will stay until you tell me what you have done with my! ! daughter. You think that cavern you were in was dark and clammy? Wait till you see thi! ! place. And no food. No water either...till you talk.

Aladdin:! Please donʼt put me in the dungeon, sir. I have told you the truth.

Mustafa:! A likely story.

Sharemsha:!

Likely indeed.

Suleiman:! Is this the end of your story? It was a good one.

Aladdin:! Thank you.

Mustafa:! Take this brazen boy, this felonious fellow to the royal dungeon, where he can rot in...

Suleiman:! Hello! I have an idea. We can publish your story -- Aladdin of the Caravans Tells it the! ! Way it Was” it will be a big success. But first we must secure exclusive rights.

Mustafa:! Suleiman! Whose side are you on?

Suleiman:! I would, of course, share the royalties with you, your Vexatiousness, and keep but a sma! ! portion for myself.

Mustafa:! Guards, take him away.

Aladdin:! No. No. I donʼt need to use the phone. I need to use the bathroom, and would like to! ! have my little lamp to light my way.

Mustafa:! Guards, give him his lamp.

(A guard picks up the lamp and hands it into Aladdin ʼ   s bound hands. Aladdin immediately rubs it and

Lampon appears in a flash -- musical rumble  )

Aladdin:! If Adora cannot come to me, I will go to Adora.

Lampon:! What is your wish, master? I am Lampon, the genie of the lamp and slave of him who! ! strokes the lamp, unseen and unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

Sharemsha:! To whom is he speaking?

(Lampon whisks Aladdin away from the guards and they both “vanish” in a flash -- musical rumble  )

Mustafa:! Gone! Where has he gone?

Suleiman:! He has disappeared into the air.

Sharemsha:! He does indeed blow with the wind.

Mustafa:! Curses! It must have been the oil in the lamp that enabled that rascal to take off and! ! escape from us. The oil in the lamp is obviously useful for locomotion as well as light.! ! This is good news for the royal treasury. But how will we find my precious daughter now! ! that her abductor has escaped? Letʼs spread out and try to find him. There are plenty o

Act II, Scene 3(A palace in Anatolia)

(A richly furnished room. One wall has a window large enough to crawl through. There is also a doorto an antechamber. Abanazar is looking out the window)

Abanazar:! The sunʼs fiery orb has lifted above the mountain peaks and has been in the sky! ! longer that I have been out of bed.  Yet the morning mist is still so thick. I cannot see the! ! rocks far below the window sill at the foot of the cliff. But they are still there, waiting to! ! crush the bones of anyone who might “accidentally “ fall from the window. None of my! ! guests leave without my permission, unless, of course, itʼs through the window. (He ! ! has an evil laugh) The little princess and I have been here for two days. And her friend,! ! Rincon:! (Entering -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  ) What is your wish, master?am Rincon, the genie of the ring and...

Abanazar:! Right, right. I know all that. Does Aladdin live?

Rincon:! He lives.

Abanazar:! Curses! Still alive! He lingers in life far too long. When will he be no more?

Rincon:! Genies will say what they hear and see, but will never say what was or will be.

Abanazar:! Another of your infernal riddles. Is Aladdin still in the cave?

Rincon:! He is out.

Abanazar:! Just as I...what did you say?

Rincon:! He is out.

Abanazar:!

Out? Out you say?

Rincon:! Out!

Abanazar:! Curses! He must have discovered the secret of the lamp.

Rincon:! Have you a task for me master?

Abanazar:! No. Be gone, genie. (She exits -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  ) But! ! this is good news. If he has escaped from the cave with the power of the lamp,! ! then I still have a chance to get the lamp out of his greedy grasp. Heʼll want

! ! to rescue his pretty little princess. And since he canʼt steal her away by magic, he

ʼll

! ! have to come here. So now I must make preparations to receive my new guest. A room! ! in the dungeon must be readied and the trap must be set. And the little princess is the! ! bait. (He exits through the antechamber and comes right back in with Adora and unties ! ! her hands) Here, princess, have a seat.

Adora:!! Thank you.

Abanazar:! (He offers her a pencil and newspaper) Hereʼs a crossword puzzle. Amuse yourself. I! ! must attend to some pressing matters.

Adora:!! Thank you.

(He exits into the antechamber and kisses the ring while Adora ponders the puzzle. Rincon appears -puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle in the antechamber)

Abanazar:! I command you to guard the little princess. And when the boy with the lamp arrives, take! ! the lamp from him and bring it to me.

Rincon:! Yes, master.

(Rincon exits antechamber and enters room through the window. Abanazar listens at the door)

Adora:!! (Working on the puzzle -- she cannot see Rincon) An eight letter word of RESCUE.

Rincon:! (Whispering in her ear) K-I-S-S-R-I-N-G. Kiss ring.

Adora:!! K-I-S-S-R-I-N-G. Kiss ring. Why does that come to mind? What does that have to do! ! with RESCUE? Anyway, that̓ s two words.

Aladdin:! Surprise.

Adora:!! Itʼs so good to see you.

Aladdin:! Itʼs good to be seen.

Adora:!! Iʼm saved!

Aladdin:! Thatʼs why I came.

Adora:!! How did you get here?

Aladdin:!

I flew through the air.

Adora:!! Flew?

Aladdin:! I know thatʼs hard to believe. The airplane hasnʼt been invented yet.

Adora:!! Neither has the telephone.

Aladdin:! Thatʼs why I didnʼt call to tell you I was coming. I hope you donʼt mind my dropping in.

Adora:!! Youʼre forgiven. How can I thank you for coming to save me from Abanazar?

Aladdin:! Just smile your pretty smile.

Adora &! ! WHEN YOUʼRE CLOSE TO MEAladdin:! ! THATʼS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE! ! ! IF WE STAY APART! ! ! WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY WILLING HEART! ! ! COULD IT BE THAT I LOVE YOU?

Adora:!! Oh, Aladdin, we must leave before Abanazar returns.

Aladdin:!

I think that can be arranged with the help of the slaveʼs lamp from the cave. Remember

! ! it? (As he holds it up for her to see, Rincon, who has been hovering around them, grabs! ! it and exits through the window -- reappearing in the antechamber. Aladdin follows to th! ! window) What? The lamp just flew off by itself. (They both look out the window).

Abanazar:! (In the antechamber, he snatches the lamp from Rincon) Itʼs about time.

Rincon:! Youʼre welcome, master.

Abanazar:! Donʼt get sassy with me. Just remember, youʼre my slave.

Rincon:! I am the slave of anyone who kisses the ring.

Abanazar:! Well, since Iʼm wearing the ring, smart aleck, that makes you my slave. Now be gone.! ! (Rincon exits -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle , Abanazar starts into the! ! main room) Now, at last, the lamp is mine.

Aladdin:! Abanazar! (Adora screams).

Abanazar:! Yes, Aladdin, it is I, Abanazar, who have come to welcome you to Anatolia and to say! ! thank you so very kindly for bringing me my lamp...finally. Itʼs about time. (He kisses the! ! ring and Rincon enters -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  )

Rincon:! What is your wish, master? I am Rincon...

Abanazar:! Quiet, slave! Bind him and take him to the dungeon -- now! (Rincon binds his wrists)! ! You may have escaped from the cave, but youʼll never escape from me.

Aladdin:! Youʼll pay for this, Abanazar.

Abanazar:! What? The lamp? Why of course Iʼll pay for it. But I̓ ll also take advantage of your! ! generous sales discount. (He tosses a coin at Aladdin) Donʼt spend it all on candy. Tak! ! him away, Rincon.

Aladdin:! Iʼll be back to get you, Adora. (Aladdin & Rincon exit -- puff of smoke or flash of light and! ! musical tinkle  )

Adora:!! Aladdin!

Abanazar:! Ah, this is the deal of my life. (He picks up the coin and pockets it). And it has cost me! ! nothing. Nothing but aggravation. At last I have the magic lamp from the cave and it sh! ! make me the richest, most powerful potentate in all the world. I have you, princess. You! ! father, the Sultan, shall still pay handsomely for your return. And, of course, I have! ! Aladdin in my dungeon. But since he is worthless to me, I shall just have him dropped

! ! onto the rocks below the cliff on which my palace sits.

Adora:!! No! Please! Donʼt do that.

Abanazar:! Quiet! Now to the slave of the lamp. (He kisses the lamp and waits for something to ! ! happen). Well?

Adora:!! Abanazar, please bring back Aladdin and return him with me to Arabia when my father! ! has paid the ransom. Please?

Abanazar:! I said, quiet. (He kisses, then shakes, the kisses the lamp many times more) Whatʼs

! ! wrong with this thing? Curses! There must be some trick to it. (He places the lamp on ! ! the window sill) Aladdin must know the trick, or else he could not have escaped from the! ! cave and come all the way from Arabia to Anatolia in the blink of an eye.

Adora:!! (An aside) Ah...kiss ring! (To Abanazar) I know the secret of the lamp.

4

Page 43: Aladdin & Adora

Abanazar:! What? How would you know?

Adora:!! Itʼs all in how you kiss the lamp. Thatʼs the trick.

Abanazar:! How would you know how to kiss the lamp?

Adora:!! Girls are better kissers.

Abanazar:! Show me how to kiss the lamp and I will grant your wish.

Adora:!! You will return Aladdin with me to Arabia when my father pays the ransom?

Abanazar:! Yes, yes. Now how should I kiss the lamp?

Adora:!! First, kiss my hand, show me how you do it.

Abanazar:!

(He does) There.

Adora:!! Now again. (She offers her other hand and he kisses it)

Abanazar:! Okay, okay. I am an experienced kisser you know.

Adora:!! Pretty good. But let me kiss your hand to show you. (She kisses the hand he offers)! ! Can you tell the difference?

Abanazar:! No.

Adora:!!

Let me try the other hand. (He offers the hand with the ring which she kisses).

Rincon:! (She enters -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle and speaks to Adora)! ! What is your wish, master? I am Rincon, the genie of the ring, and slave of him who! ! kisses the ring, unseen and unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

(Adora, seeing Rincon for the 1st time, stares in surprise. Abanazar tries to see what she ̓   s looking atbut cannot see Rincon)

Abanazar:! What do you see?

Adora:!! Nothing, nothing. I just had a good idea, thatʼs all. (to Rincon) I command you to free! ! Aladdin from his bounds and bring him here through the window.

Rincon:! As you wish, master (she exits -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  )

4

Page 44: Aladdin & Adora

Abanazar:! What makes you think you can command me to do anything? Where do you think you! ! are anyway, in your fatherʼs palace? And if -- if I bring Aladdin here to you, it will be! ! through the door, not through the window. And Iʼll only do that if you have potent pucker! ! power, princess. And now Iʼll test your technique with a lip-lock on the lamp.

Adora:!!

(Grabbing his hand and holding it tightly) Allow me one more simulated smooch to! ! secure success.

Abanazar:! Enough of this osculation demonstration.

(He yanks his hand away and goes for the lamp on the window sill just as Aladdin comes through the window, picking up and rubbing the lamp. Abanazar chases Aladdin around the room as Lampon appears -- in a flash -- musical rumble  )

Lampon:! What is your wish, master. I am Lampon, the genie of the lamp and slave of him who! ! strokes the lamp, unseen and unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

Aladdin:! I command you to bind Abanazar. (Lampon grabs Abanazar mid-chase and binds his ! ! hands. Adora whispers to Aladdin) I command you to bind his wrists to his waist.

Abanazar:! What, what is this? Youʼll pay for this you unctuous urchin. (He is desperately trying to ! ! get his hands up in order to kiss the ring)

Adora:!! Aladdin, the ring Abanazar wears is very beautiful. May I please have it?

Aladdin:! Of course, Adora, you have earned it.

Adora:!!

Just as you have earned the lamp.

Aladdin:! I command you to take the ring off of Abanazarʼa finger and give it to Adora.

Adora:!! Thank you Aladdin. (She puts the ring on and kisses it. Rincon appears -- puff of smoke! ! or flash of light and musical tinkle  )

Rincon:! (To Lampon) Hi, Cookie.

Lampon:! How ya doin? (he exits -- in a flash -- musical rumble  )

Rincon:! Oh, What is your wish, master. I am Rincon, the genie of the ring and slave of him who! ! kisses the ring, unseen and unheard by all others. Your wish is my command.

Adora:!! I command you to go to Arabia and bring my father, the Sultan, here to Anatolia. He mu! ! be worried sick about me. Heʼll probably want to bring along his entourage. (she exits -! ! puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle  )

Abanazar:! I hope you two are happy with your new toys.

Aladdin:! Yes, thank you. We are.

Adora:!!

Weʼre having a wonderful time. And how are you Abanazar?

Abanazar:! Well, a little tied up at the moment. But that is bound to change, dear, sweet children.

(Rincon enters -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle through the window followed by Mustafa, Suleiman, Sharemsha and the guards. Aladdin places the lamp on the window sill to greet them but they don ̓   t see him)

Adora:!! Thank you Rincon. (Rincon exits -- puff of smoke or flash of light and musical tinkle ! ! as Adora goes to hug Mustafa) Oh father, Iʼve missed you.

Mustafa:!

Adora! My darling daughter. I thought I might never see you again.

Sharemsha:! Oh look Suleiman. Adora is here.

Suleiman:! Where is here? Where am I? What happened? I was about to eat my dinner when I wa! ! suddenly flying through the air.

Adora:!! I was so scared until Aladdin got here.

Sharemsha:! Aladdin!

Suleiman:!

The kidnapper!

Mustafa:! Guards, seize him.

Suleiman:! Arrest him.

Adora:!! Father, no. Aladdin is innocent. He saved me. There (pointing to Abanazar) is my! ! kidnapper -- the evil wizard, Abanazar.

(Abanazar has been creeping toward the window to get the lamp on the sill. As Adora points him out they all freeze for a second then Aladdin and Abanazar both make a mad dash to the window. Aladdin

grabs the lamp and, as Abanazar lunges for it he goes toppling out the window).

Aladdin:! He never even said goodbye.

Sharemsha:! He never said hello, either.

Adora:!! (Lampon & Rincon lean out the window then turn - look at each other with a thumbs up)

Adora:!! Abanazar wrote the ransom note and signed Aladdinʼs name to it.

Mustafa:! Forgive me for thinking ill of you my boy.
