Shout Out from Garrett Elementary National Pawn

Garrett Elementary school music teacher Katie Hayes knew one of her students’ birthdays was coming up at the beginning of winter break, and the child’s wish was for her own violin to continue with her music lessons. Ms. Hayes found out about the National Pawn social media contest offering a free item for one lucky winner to celebrate the holidays, entered and WON! What a great way to support a student’s musical dreams! Ms. Hayes picked up the violin from the Burlington National Pawn store on the last day of classes, December 21, just in time to surprise her student on her birthday, December 22!

On Friday, December 21, members of the Cummings High Orchestra celebrated the last day of school before break with a Holiday Tour of Newlin, Andrews, and Eastlawn Elementary Schools! At their last stop, Eastlawn students entertained them with their Readers Theatre performances. It was an exciting day of music and theatre and just the thing to kick off the holiday break! We enjoyed a great time sharing our love of music with future Cavaliers!

Shout Out from Southern High FFA Tasha Dawson, FFA Advisor

(Submitted by Emma DiLello) The Alamance County community has supported the Southern Alamance FFA Chapter for many years. This holiday season, Southern Alamance FFA looked for a way to give back to our community and selected the Christmas Cheer organization. Our FFA chapter adopted four families in the Alamance County community through the Christmas Cheer program. Members of the Southern Alamance FFA chapter came together with the goal of providing these families with an amazing Christmas! Students enrolled in agriculture classes at Southern Alamance were encouraged by their advisors and FFA officer team to donate toys, winter clothing, food supplies, monetary amounts and other necessities to the Christmas Cheer drive. All donations collected were sorted out by each family’s list, and delivered to the houses of these families by members of Southern Alamance FFA. This was the

first year that Southern Alamance FFA has participated in Christmas Cheer, and they plan to keep this going on for many years to come. There are no words for the emotional and social impact that this undertaking had on Southern FFA students. After delivering our surprises, minds and hearts were full of thankfulness, appreciation for what we have in our lives and a sense of accomplishment as we begin to overcome barriers and turn over a new leaf in Southern FFA traditions.

Shout Out from Southern Middle Heather Ward, Principal

Students in Mr. Miller's CTE Ed Tech program at Southern Alamance Middle School built a hovercraft chair using only plywood, a tarp, PVC pipe, a lawn chairs, tape, and a leaf blower. The challenge was to build a chair that would allow a person to hover just enough to glide over the floor without scratching it.

Students used the design process, with lots of trial and error, to successfully create two hovercraft chairs. This is the epitome of 21st Century Learning!!!!

Shout Out from Andrews Elementary Gena Crews, Assistant Principal

Officer Ricky Pacheco Matias served as an Elementary School Resource Officer on January 7, which was his day off from his regular duty as a Burlington PD officer. While spending the day at Andrews, he engaged with students during lunch and in their classrooms. He was caught reading a book to a class while they were visiting the media center for their Encore time. What a great role model for our students! He also assisted with traffic control at dismissal. We appreciate you Officer Pacheco Matias!
