Shout Out from Southern Middle Laureana Armitage, Spanish Instructor
Southern Middle School's 8th grade Spanish I elective students had the fantastic opportunity to sample a performance given by the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet at A&T University, designed to not only entertain, but also enlighten, giving students an opportunity to experience the rich and diverse culture of the Hispanic people as seen through the performing arts.
Students were astonished by the range of dances, as well as guitar and mandolin numbers performed; each section being accompanied by a short explanation in both Spanish and English. It was a fantastic chance for students to watch and learn about a culture very different to their own. After the show, students ate lunch in the sun; enjoying the beauty of the Gateway Botanical Gardens. It was an enjoyable trip for students, chaperones and teachers alike. All that is left to say is: ¡Olé! Ms. Laureana Armitage.

This simulation provides students an opportunity to make real-world financial decisions about paying for housing, transportation and other monthly expenses as they transition into young adults with financial responsibilities. Teachers left with some great follow- up lesson ideas reinforcing financial literacy. Thank you to the community and school volunteers who graciously gave of their time to assist students with this event. It would not happen without them!
