Shout Out from Newlin Elementary Heather Holley-Hall, Media Coordinator

Newlin Wildcats Think Like Makers During MakerSpace Week! March 27-31 was Newlin Elementary School’s first MakerSpace week! Students in grades Pre-K through 5 came to the MakerSpace during their media and technology specials throughout the week to participate in maker activities. Students rotated through three stations in the MakerSpace At one station, they used Makey Makey kits to play a digital piano using a variety of objects including metal rings, paper clips, fruit and their own noses! Participants also used lemons, nails, pennies and wires to build a battery capable of powering a small alarm, and created “secret messages” using lemon juice and filter paper. Younger students created tissue paper snakes and used static electricity to make them “dance.”

Newlin Technology Coach, Jamie East, and Media Coordinator, Heather Holley-Hall, have been adding maker activities and supplies to the ECC Library/Computer Lab over the last year. Most of the MakerSpace items have been purchased using the Scholastic Bucks earned during the school Book Fairs. Beginning in August, teachers will be able to book time in the MakerSpace for their classes to work

on projects and activities. East and Holley-Hall will support class use of the MakerSpace by providing a detailed inventory of supplies and activities. Additionally, they are planning to train 5th grade Student Leaders to assist teachers as their classes use the space!

The Hispanic Educational Summit is an initiative of the NCSHP to promote and disseminate information

on the benefits of formal and higher education among the Hispanic youth of North Carolina.

This year’s Summit welcomed Angel Flores, a motivational speaker, author, and college professor who

enjoys sharing his story of overcoming adversity to inspire students, and Lilyan Prado Carrillo, a

motivational speaker and bilingual specialist for a Title I school in Texas, as the keynote speakers.

Students were also welcomed by Margaret Spellings (President, UNC Education System), Dr. Duane

Larick (Senior Vice Provost, NCSU), Honorable Javier Diaz De Leon (General Consul of Mexico in the

Carolinas), and Mr. Marco Zarate (President and Co-founder of NCSHP) before attending featured

presentations of their choice focusing on life skills, education planning, and career planning.

I think it is safe to say that all of these students left feeling inspired and motivated to continue on to

higher education upon graduating from high school!

Shout Out from Southern High FFA Anna Bruner, FFA Advisor

Chapter officers and members of the Southern Alamance FFA chapter traveled to Greensboro during the weekend on March 18 & 19, 2017. Students attended the North Carolina MEGA Conference for FFA members. At this conference members attended workshops about FFA opportunities, leadership skills and characteristics, resume writing, and much more. The convention theme was “It Starts with Us.” Members learned of ways and how their FFA journey began with them and ways they could continue on their journey. The members loved hearing from the NC FFA State Officers as well as two South Carolina State Officers. This leadership conference is one that hooks many FFA members in and pushes them to become very involved in the organization. We hope everyone that attended applies to become a chapter officer for next school year. Our members already can’t wait for next year’s MEGA conference!

Shout Out from Smith Elementary Kaitlyn Mincey, Second Grade

Last week our guidance counselor Candice Lewis organized a wonderful event for our fourth and fifth grade girls to come together for an afternoon of fun. This event welcomed around 40 fourth and fifth grade girls that joined the afternoon for snacks, pictures, nail painting, Zumba dancing, crafts, board games, and cheerleading! Ms. Lewis was able to discuss the importance to these girls of uplifting one another as girls and treating each other equally, with respect, and with true friendship. She also discussed the importance of each girl and her own beauty and unique personality. This was an exciting afternoon as girls chatted, made new friends, and bonded during the different activities that were organized throughout the gym. They even had the chance to take pictures as the Class of 2024 and the Class of 2025!

Girl Power! The purpose was to reduce girl drama and highlight positive qualities about themselves, while making new friends! The girls participated in Zumba, arts/crafts, nail painting, cheerleading, and games. They also watched a movie explaining how to deal with girl drama.

Students were able to ask questions, and parents responded candidly and helpfully about the need for building relationships, asking for parental support, and communication. The panel was very well received and very much appreciated by the student teachers. We are thankful to have ABSS as such a supportive partner! Thank you particularly to Jenny Faulkner, Dr. Joe Ferrell, Todd Stephan, and Fredrick Sellars who helped to develop this panel.
