Shout Out from A-B Early/Middle College Bonnie Roane, Principal On Friday, May 5, Alamance Community College held the ribbon cutting event for its brand-new Multipurpose Sport Court! ACC and ABSS partnered together to apply for an Impact Alamance grant. The grant was approved, and Impact Alamance donated $50,000.00 toward this project. In the ACC celebration following the ribbon cutting, a basketball challenge was held. Participants put their name into a drawing and then names were drawn for the chance to make a goal from the half court line. Sophomore Early Middle College student Uriel Regalado's name was drawn, and, of course, he made his shot! Uriel received a $200.00 gift card for his winning shot. Our Early Middle College students will be able to utilize the court in their ACC PED 110 class. Congratulations to Uriel!

Shout Out from Child Nutrition Pam Bailey, Director

Shout Out from Eastern High

Caroline Segars was chosen as one of the 10 Fnalists in the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) Rising Star Theater Award for Best Actress in a High School Musical! She will actually be performing and singing several group numbers with the finalists and will sing her main song "Impossible" from Cinderella on DPAC's stage on May 16. It is an awards show and showcase and that night they will announce the winner for Best Actress and Best Actor, from among the finalists.

If she wins she will move on to the National Competition in New York and will perform on Nederlander's Minskoff Theatre, home theatre for Disney's The Lion King. There she would have the chance to be recognized by Broadway Directors and win over $10,000 in scholarships.

What is Triangle Rising Stars?

Triangle Rising Stars is the regional competition that brings together high school musical theater students from Central and Eastern North Carolina to perform and compete for the chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City each summer.

Throughout the school year, judges from DPAC, Theatre in the Park, Playmakers Repertory Theater, WTVD ABC 11 and other arts groups attend high school musical theater productions across the region.

20 regional finalists are selected to attend a weekend workshop retreat and compete with the best of their peers at the Triangle Rising

Stars live showcase and awards show at DPAC.

Awards in this regional competition include Best Actor and Best Actress, Best Ensemble, and Best Musical. The Triangle Rising Stars Best Actress and Best Actor receive $1,000 academic scholarships and are invited to an all-expense paid trip to the NHSMTA program in New York City.

Seabee Showcase! On Thursday, April 27th some brave Seabees shared their talent onstage with the rest of the world. There were acrobats, musicians, comedy acts, dancers, cheerleading routines and other various forms of entertainment. The PTO sponsored the talent show as a fundraiser and it was well attended by the families, students and staff. The students auditioned for the opportunity to perform and then attended after school practices for a couple of weeks prior to the actual show. They did a wonderful job showcasing their talent. We have a bunch of talented Seabees!

Shout Out for Mental Health Awareness Month Shelli Altopp- Miller, School Social Worker for E. M. Holt & Sylvan

EM Holt students learned about mental illness, where a person with a mental illness can go for help, types of help available, famous people who thrive regardless of having a mental illness, and how to build mental health. Students participated in a lesson on empathy by trying on various shoes and "walking a mile in someone else's shoes". Just like the shoes felt too big, fell off, too tight, pinched their

toes, or weren't their style, we discussed how we never know what another person is feeling, and that being kind is always the right thing to do!

Shout Out from Western High Choral Music Sean Lucier, Director

On May 5th and 6th 9 students from WAHS participated in the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) North Carolina All State Chorus in Raleigh, NC. Students worked with amazing conductors throughout the weekend to prepare for their concert in the Memorial Auditorium: Dr. James Franklin from ECU, Dr. Christopher Aspaas from ECU, Dr. Julie Yu from Kansas State University, and Dr. Nathan Leaf from NC State University. Students rehearsed from 7 hours on Friday and over 4 hours on Saturday to put on amazing performances for their parents and teachers. Students grow both musically and personally through their close interactions with the conductors and other student singers from around the state. Mr. Lucier even had the honor of performing with the men's choir on Franz Beibl's Ave Maria. We can't wait to go back next year!

Shout Out from Haw River Elementary Amanda Williams, Fifth Grade

My 5th grade class has published a book! They worked very hard! Each student wrote about their favorite 5th grade memory and drew an illustration to accompany their writing.

Our class members diligently worked through the writing process. They brainstormed and organized their ideas, wrote a rough draft, revised and edited their writing with peers, and, finally, published their final writing pieces.

My students are very excited about being published authors and I'm so very proud of all their hard work!

Shout Out from Alexander Wilson Elementary Daniel Flack, STEAM Club Advisor

Shout Out to AWE STEAM Club! On May 8th, Alexander Wilson Elementary hosted their second STEAM Night of the year hosting over 500 students and their families! AWE families came out to enjoy an evening of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This student-led event featured many hands-on STEAM experiments, like Fireworks in a Jar, Erupting Salt Art, and Newspaper Bridges. Students also raised funds for our school STEAM Club by selling handmade crafts at the “Maker Store”. The most popular event of the evening was the real-life Angry Birds game complete

with a giant slingshot and balloon pigs waiting to be popped. Thank you to the AWE students and parents who worked so hard to make this night a success!

Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian Run, Seabees, Run! Recently the Seabees and their families and friends came together on a beautiful Saturday morning to get a little exercise. We held our second annual 5K Color Run. The PTO sponsored this fundraiser. It began with the running of the 5K and continued on to the playing of global games created and run by the staff at Smith. A DJ provided music for all of the fun. The end of the event was the much awaited chance to throw a pie in the face of a willing teacher. The students donated a dollar to buy a chance to throw the pie. Then the lucky child’s name was drawn on that day to actually throw. Thanks go to the good sports who volunteered to be at the end of those pies! Special thanks also go to parent organizers, Jennifer Smith, David Scott and Noelle Fogg for their efforts to make sure that things ran smoothly on our special day!

Our first Smith Seabee to cross the finish line was Aidan Wellman, pictured at right! Run, Aidan, run!

Seabees know how to make a run FUN!

Shout Out from Southern Alamance FFA Nick Anders, FFA Advisor

Members of the Southern Alamance FFA, tested their management knowledge and problem-solving skills in the areas of aquatics, forestry, wildlife, soils/land use and current environmental issues in this hands-on, natural science competition.

Over 400 of North Carolina’s brightest middle and high school students competed at the 2017 North Carolina Envirothon held at CedarRock Park in Alamance County. The two-day event is designed to test the knowledge and skills of students that have a strong interest in environmental science and natural resource conservation. The NC Envirothon is one of the largest events of its kind in the United States, reaching more than 20,000 students in its 27 years of history.

Student competitors have been preparing for the NC Envirothon since the beginning of the school year; studying ecology and natural resources as well as hands-on skills such as wildlife identifications, forestry management techniques, soils classifications, stream ecology, and water quality sampling.

To qualify for the NC Envirothon, three-to-five-member teams had to place in the top seven positions within their grade divisions at one of eight, area-level qualifying events held earlier this year across the state. The competition is open to public and private school, homeschooled students, 4-H groups, FFA clubs or other youth group organizations.

2017 sponsors of the NC Envirothon include Smithfield Foods, Duke Energy, Soil Science Society of North Carolina, the HHB Chapter, Soil & Water Conservation Society, NC State University Department of Soil Science and more.

Shout Out from Turrentine Middle Amy Trotter, P.E./Health

The TMS backpack program, run by Donna Layton, attempts to meet the nutritional values for 24 students from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, each week. Students served are low income, McKinney-Vento, or students with disabilities. This year, Walmart awarded us with a $500 grant, which allowed us to purchase 48 backpacks for the program. Strong backpacks are needed to carry the heavy loads of food. Macedonia Lutheran Church’s social ministry committee has adopted us and donated a large amount of food and extra over the holidays. We are very grateful to @Walmart for the grant that has allowed us to keep this program alive for the students!

Shout Out #2 from Turrentine Middle Amy Trotter, P. E./Health

Coach Trotter’s Tea Time group of 18 7th and 8th grade students have been working through the Think Through Math Program since the third week of school. These students have been working hard on their personal goals for the upcoming EOGs. Small incentives were earned along the way, with donations of school supplies from the Turrentine Office and academic coach, Kandis Sauls. A list of incentives could be chosen from early on and a large goal was set, that if 500,000 points were collectively earned and 25 lessons were passed, they would be able to participate in a $50 Pizza Hut pizza party. Thirty Lessons equate to an entire year’s math growth.

Ten students, Sarah Peralta, Ni’eon Hunt, Kalai Neuenkirchen, Adam Shepard, Jaeli Marti, Karina Martinez, Alondra Tolentino, with top performers Monica Cerros, Ian Johnson and Rosario Rojas, met this BIG goal and received a delicious reward! Way to go, TMS Trojans! Great job! Huge thanks to @imaginelearning, and @pizzahut for keeping us motivated all year long!
