Mariachi Femenil Orgullo Mexicano, an all-female

Mariachi band, will be per-forming at Otaez Restaurant on Sunday, March 2, 2014. They are the only all-female Mariachi band in the Bay Area. The band consist of 10 women who play a vari-ety of instruments, violins, trumpet, harp, guitarron (mariachi bass), vihuela (five string rhythm guitar), and guitar. The band is a unique group of women musicians playing together since 2007, breaking bar-riers within the genre and opening up opportunities of leadership, diversity and change. Within the group the women are of different ages, cultures, educational backgrounds and ethnici-ties, representing Mexican, Polish, Czech, Argentinean, Yemeni, and European ethnicities. The group was formed to “lead by example and represent Mexican cul-ture, Mariachi tradition and

women in the arts,” says Dr. Lilia Chavez, the group’s representative. The tradition of Mariachi music is embed-ded in the life cycle, from beginning to end. The music is healing as each song has a story line of life, love, poverty, war and/or spiritual awakening. Chavez says, “It taps into our memory bank of life experiences and at times stirs up one’s emo-tions, that helps one release and let go. On the other hand it just lifts up your spirit! “La Cultura cura!” (Culture Cures). Mariachi Femenil gives
