lhe new digr: Renovation begins on'Alam0 Drafthouse at the Ritz"in April 2007

WAIAMo DowNTowNCEI.EBRAIES TEN VEAR AN N IVERsARY...Ten years ago, my wife Karrie and I opened the doors to the original (olorado

Street Alamo Drafthouse (inema. We had just finished the most grueling six

months of our lives, working 0n the (onstruction every day, 7 days a week

about 15 hours a day. We worked at a feverish pace and did damn neareverything ourselves, mainly because we had no money. With a paltry sum

raised by hitting up our parents and friends and an assortment 0f (redit card

loans, we installed new plumbing, air conditioning, ele(trical, and fabricated

the screening room that we've been enjoying for the last decade. 0n openingday, we had 520,000 left in the bank, and with our freshly-hired staff, our firstever employees, that was enough to last us for about a month if no-one (ame

to the theater. lt was a miserably naive business plan.

Thankfully, Austin responded to us quickly and we stand looking back ten years

laterto happily see the concept of our original cinema still intact. ln the next

three months, we will be celebrating our 1 0 year anniversary by bringing back

many of our classir events and guests. We hope you will join us many times

in April through June as we celebtate and share some of our favorite movies

of the past decade. Lookforthe red"10"logo in this guideforall anniversary

IO THE HISTORI( RITZ THEATER!For the last 10 years, we have also seen the warehouse distlict grow up

around us. As the neighborhood has become more and more upscale, we've

seen many long-time businesses fall away: The Bitter End, Gilligans, Waterloo

Brewing (0, and Ruta Maya to name just a few. At the end of June, 2007, our

lease will expire and due to the high costs of rent, insurance and taxes, we

have been not been confident that we would be able to (ontinue occupying

our current space. With the end of our lease looming, the Downtown Austin

Alliance stepped in quickly and brought us together with the owners of theRitz Theater on 6th Street. ln a matter of weeks, we shook hands on a deal

and are now moving full-steam ahead with planning for the next decade ofAlamo Drafthouse Downtown programming: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema attheRitz. Renovation begins in April and we hope to be open as soon as possible,

maybe as early as summer's end. This theater will prove to be the best Alamo

Drafthouse yet. While retaining the intimacy and pr0gramming ofthe original

location, the Ritz will have two scieens, plush VIP seating, state-of-the-artprojection and sound and the new experience ofa remodeled and renovated

landmark Austin movie palace. Please stay tuned to the Alamo website and

blog for progress 0n the constru(ion as well as updates on opening weekprogramming and events.

We would like to thank Lany and Mary (raddock, owners of the Ritz property

who reached out to us and did everything they (0uld to make this happen-welook forward to collectively reviving a lost Austin movie palace; the Downtown

Austin Alliance for bringing the (raddocks and us together; 3ob Woody,

current operator of the Ritz for working with us to make the change; Danny

Roth of Southwest Strategies for believing in a couple of kids with no money

or experience 10 years ago-we are happy to still be working with you today;

Karen Bartoletti and the gang at Graves Dougherty for making the process

oflumping through legal hoops relatively quick and painless. We also thankour loyal and extremely hard-working staff, in particular man-in-charge Mike

Shenill for furthering and refining our original vision. Most of all, though,we'd like to thank the "Heroes of the Alamo" members and the entire city ofAustin for continuing to support us and watch movies with us over the years.

We love this city and we look forward to 1 0 more years of obsessive cinematic

exploits.

For more information about the 1 0 Year Anniversary screenings at the original

Alamo Drafthouse (inema, check out www.originalalamo.com. There are

only a few months left t0 enjoy the original location, we hope to see you there

soon and often! Every dollar you spend will be going towards the massive

renovation overhaul of the Ritz. Also, stay tuned for information on the"lastnight at the Alamo" final screening and party!

is clearly going to be a major season for entertainment. Prepare to explode...

GRINDHOUSElikely the most hotly antidpated Austin produdion of all time, GRINDHOU5E stands on the verge 0f ledefining sarae

cinema for the new millennium. The two modern mastels 0f two-fisted film have joined forces to create back-r"

THE HOAXln what became an enormous media event, (lifford lrving (Richard Gere) sold his bogus biography of Howatd Hugiie

pre-ielease buzz shows that many expect this film to eclipse Scorsese's THE AVIAT0R, and Richard Gere's performane

AQUA TEEN HUN6ER FORCE COLON MOVIE FILM FOR THEATERS

STVERANCEWhen a multi-national weapons manufacturer rewards their European sales division with a team-building weekenl

story by philip K. Dick, the incredible writer whose work has been adapted into many enduring science fiction films

including BLADE RUNNER, MIN0RITY REP0RT, A SCANNER DARKTY and T0TAt RECALL.

SPIDER-MAN 3Anyone who tells ygu they're not ex(ited about this movie is a liar. This time, Spider-Man is challenged by two

villains: Sandman, an escaped convict made powerful by a nuclear explosion, and Ven0m, a parasitic life form from

our hero's past. There's also going to be some earth-shaking vengean(e courtesy of...well, we don't want to give it all

The Rolling Stones - and while consistently topping the (harts in the UK - they went practically unnoticed

stateside, with the ex(eption oftheir one US hit"ltchycoo Park". lt'5 often been said that they were the

biggest band in the world never to make it in the USA. After the departure ofsinget Steve Mal]iott, the boys

truncated their moniker to The Faces and took on Rod Stewart as lead vo(alist. ln a sharp departure from

the Small Faces'mod roots, The Fates were a rough, deliberately sloppy rock & roll band, able to pound out

a rocker like "Had Me a Real Good Time,"a blues ballad like "Tell Everyone,"or a folk number like"Richmond"

all in one album. Stewart, already becoming a star in his own right, let himself go wild with the ta(es,

tearing through covers and originals with abandon (despite his status as a rock legend, he was never as

good as he was with The Faces). Notorious for their hard-partying, boozy touts and ragged contetts, The

Faces lived the rock & roll lifestyle to the extreme. This ultra-rare music video show is dedi(ated to the

memories of Ronnie lane and Steve Marriott. legendary Fares keyboardist lan Mclagan will be in the

KlILER 0F SHEEP is something of a miracle - a 1 6 millimeter black-and-white movie which was made for around ten thousand dollars. For his nonprofessionalcast Charles Burnett used friends and people that he knew in his Watts neighborhood. The

result is a portrait 0flife in the ghetto remarkable for its realism. Thrust into a series ofscenesfeaturing many different rharacters, the audience must pay close attention until it becomesclear what the relationships are. Gradually a story emerges concerning a slaughterhouseworker named Stan, married with two kids, who is dissatisfied with his life but is unclear as

to why. His wife wants more intimary, but he closes himself off to her. Friends try to get himinvolved in some shady dealings - he rebuffs them. His everyday life is filled with setba(ksand frustrations. THE FILMS OF MI(HAEL HANEKET fi il * il 6 Fl * u T A 7 XtL I l'lt P,u P"T T *F e t A f,4 * D 0 lld l,i TOW f,i

Haneke is, perhaps, the most (ontroversial of (ontemporary European directors. His frlms, all of which determinedly make

no concessions to the viewer, have both alienated a udienres (being booed at (an nes) and w0n them over; he has established

a positi0n as one of(inema's imp0rtant provo(ateurs, a (on(ept lost in an era where (ultural/political subversion is often

seen as passd, or conceived with jaundiced, anti-humanist cynicism. Equally importantly, he has presented demanding

philosophical questions in a formal cinemati< language that has a bold and uncomprising nature t0 matd its (ontent.

Mirhael Haneke's third feature film expands on the claustrophobically endosed

subject matter of his earlier films, whith looked at various problems in society from

the viewpoint of the middle-das family. The focus remains on those disenthanted

by bourgeois morality, hypoctisy and the absurdities of modern society, but the

scope here is extended to examine this point ofview from a fradured cross-se(tion

of different viewpoints, all of them united by a moment of shocking and senseless

violence.

in its ability to sho(k that it gained pariah statur on the film festival (ir(uit in 1 997.

This is a film that addresses the controversy of screen violence by making the

viewer as guilty as the Leopold and Loeb-like killers who tenotize a young family

ofthree during their summer vacation. They anive as friendly neighbors, seducing

the family with phony congeniality, but soon FUNNY GA[4ES reveals its devious

strateg, turning savage and appalling... and completely captivating foI those who

A Cannes 2000 winner, C0DE UNKNOWN is a provocatively tomplex film that

combines a prescient deconstruction of modern urban living with more philosophical

meditations 0n the nature of human existence. The fotmet is made delibetately

explicit with the opening nine-minute tra(king shot that a(ts as a fluid entry-point

into the narrative, whilst the latter is constantly lutking under the surface ofthefilm, teased out by Haneke's manipulations. A tense vi0lent encountel and its effect

0n a disparate group of people sets the stene for the rest of the film.
