PERSONNEL OF THE FIRST LINCOLN REGIMENT 1812-1814 OFFICERS COLONELS CLAUS, Honorable William - Born in Williamsburg, New York, Sept. 7, 1765, the son of Col. Daniel Claus. Served in the Royal Regt. of New York and the 60th Regt. in the Revolutionary War. Became Deputy Superintendent of Indian affairs; Lieutenant of Oxford County; and Commanding Officer of the Oxford Militia 1802-1808. Appointed to command the First Lincoln Regiment June 22, 1812, to succeed Colonel Clench; commanded all the Militia from Queenston to Niagara (4th Division). His son, Ensign Daniel Claus of the 49th Regiment died of wounds at Chrysler's farm in 1813. Became a Member of the Executive Council in 1818. P.R. Grant in Innisfil. Resigned command of the lst Lincoln Regt. 1826. Died of Cancer Nov. ll, 1826, at Niagara. CLENCH, Ralfe - Born Schenectaby, New York. Served in the 52nd Regt. the 5th Regt. and Butler's Rangers in the Revolutionary War. Residing at Niagara. Became Judge of the District Court; Registrar of the Surrogate Court; Clerk of the Peace 1792-1800; M.L.A. for Lincoln 1800-1804 and 1812-1818. Promoted to Colonel in April 1806. Resigned command of the lst Lincoln Regt. in June 1812, as a result of a dispute with Major General Brock; participated in the action at Queenston, Oct. 13, 1812 as a Civilian; appointed Assistan Quarter-Master General in Jan. 1813 by Major General Sheaffe; fought in the Battle of Fort George May 27, 1813; ordered into custody by Gen. Dearborn in June 1813; transported into New York State as a Prisoner in the summer of 1813 and remained a Prisoner until the termination of the War. P.R. Grant in Chatham. Died at Niagara Jan. 19, 1828 at 63 years. His sons Johnson & Francis became Commanding Officer of the First Battalion, Lincoln Mliitia. LIEUTENANT COLONEL KERR, Robert - Arrived in Quebec, 1776, as a Hospital Mate. Served as a Surgeon during the Revolutionary War. Had a private practice at Niagara and was also Surgeon to the Indian Dept. prior to 1812. Left the lst Lincoln Regiment early in the War to serve in the Indian Department; ordered into custody as a civilian prisoner in 1813; transported to Greenbush, New York. Medical examiner for the Pension Board after the War. Died Feb. 24, 1824 at 69 years at Albany, New York, while visiting there. MAJORS GIVINS, James - Ensign in the Queen's Rangers 1791. Listed as a supernumerary officer in June 1812; appointed Provincial Aide-de-camp Aug. 14, 1812; Agent for the Indian Dept. during the War. Became Colonel in the York Militia after the War. Died in 1846, at 87 years. HATT, Richard - Resigned June 18, 1812 and joined the 5th Lincoln Regt. Resided at Ancaster. Served on the Pension Board after the War.

MUIRHEAD, James - Arrived in Canada from Scotland about 1790 as a Surgeon's Mate in the 60th Regt. In civil life, a Doctor at Niagara and Chairman of the Quarter Sessions of the District. Appointed Surgeon to the Militia on the outbreak of the war; taken by the enemy and transported to Greenbush, New York in the summer of 1813; released Dec. 8, 1813. Received War damage award of L905. P.R. Grant in Garrafraxa. Appointed Surgeon General of Militia in 1822. Died at Niagara March 24, 1834 at 69 years. ROBERTSON, William - Stepson of Lieut. Col. Hon. Robert Hamilton. Merchant at Queenston. Promoted Major June 27, 1812 at 3l years to succeed Major Muirhead; present at Queenston Oct. 13, 1812; called an incompetent drunk by Capt. James Crooks in a letter of complaint 1814. Served in the lst Lincoln Regiment until 1825 when he left the area. Appeared in Canboro in 1831. CAPTAINS BALL, George Augustus - Second son of Lieut.Col. Peter M. Ball (C.O. 2nd Lincoln Regt. 1802-1809) Ensign May 6, 1806; Lieut. Jan. 3, 1809; Capt. July 2, 1812 to succeed Capt. George Read in command of No. 5 Battalion Company (North Grantham); listed as paroled under arms Sept. 1813; 3 children March, 1813; commanded the detachment of the lst Lincoln Regiment that participated in the Winter Campaign of Dec. 1813; prize money from Fort Niagara; present at Fort George and Lundy's Lane. Remained with the lst Lincoln Regiment until 1824 when he left the district. Returned later and died at Niagara, Feb. 10, 1854 at 69 years. BALL, Jacob A., First son of Lieut. Col. Peter M. Ball. Nicknamed "Tomahawk" Promoted Captain July 2, 1812, to succeed Capt. William Robertson in command of No. 7 Battalion Coy. (West Louth); present at Fort George and Lundy's Lane; captured at his home on 10 Mile Creek June ll, 1813; listed a prisoner at Fort Niagara june 18, 1813; released by exchange Oct. 1813. Died Grantham, July 24, 1820 at 43 years of age. CAMERON, Alexander - Barrister at Niagara. Commissioned Ensign May 6, 1812 and 3nd Capt in Artillery Coy. June 28, 1812; mentioned in dispatches Oct. 13, 1812; became C.O. of the Incorporated Artillery Coy. 1813. P.R. Grant in Innisfil. Died at Niagara, May 12, 1820. CROOKS, James - Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, 1778. Came to Canada 1794 and settled at Niagara as a Merchant. Commissioned Ensign 1797; promoted Captain May 13, 1807; given command of No. 1 Flank Coy. in the Spring of 1812. Present at Queenston and mentioned in dispatches. Present at Fort George; ordered into custody by General Dearborn in June, 1813; transported to Greenbush, New York in the SUmmer of 1813; released by the Spring of 1814; Present at Lundy's Lane. P.R. Grant in Zorra; M.L.A. 1820 and later became the Honorable James Crooks. Moved to the Gore District 1822. Became C.O. of the lst Regiment Gore Militia. Built the first Paper Mill in Canada West and made the first wheat shipment from Niagara to Montreal. Died in Flamboro March 2, 1860. HAMILTON, George - Son of Lieut. Col. Hon. Robert Hamilton. Promoted Captain Aug. 20, 1810, age 23 years in 1812; Transferred to Niagara Light Dragoons. HERON, Andrew - Born inScotland and arrived in Niagara 1785. Became a Merchant and later publisher of the "Gleaner". Commanded No. l Battalion Coy.

Died at Niagara May 13, 1848 at age 83 years. JONES, John - Appeared living at Niagara 1798; purchsed land in Ancaster in 1798 and moved there. Became a Captain in the 5th Lincoln Regiment. Returned to Niagara about 1810 and commenced a tailoring business there. Became a Captain in the lst Lincoln Regiment, May 14, 1811; Succeeded Captain George Hamilton in 1812 in command of No. 3 Battalion Company. (South Grantham) Wounded May 27, 1813 and later taken prisoner. Died while a prisoner of war at Burlington, Vermont Dec. 23, 1813. Bured there with Masonic honours Dec. 25th. 50 years of age in 1813. LAWE, George - Son of Capt. George Law "an old and distinguished officer of His Majesty's Service." Became Gentlemen Usher of the Black Rod 1792 to the Parliament of Upper Canada. An Assistant Engineer by profession. Overseer of the Works at Fort George 1797. Commanded No. 2 Battalion Coy. (Louth & Grantham); Wounded May 27, 1813; his son Corporal George William Lawe, killed in action the same day; taken into custody and transported into New York State in the Summer of 1813; while confined at Burlington, Vermont, he was rescued along with Capt. John Powell by a party of Canadian Militia from Missisquoi Bay on Feb. 3, 1814; returned to Niagara and served with the Engineer's Dept. for the duration of the War. Died at Niagara, Oct. 8, 1816 age 47 years. LAWRENCE, George - Formerly a Private in Butler's Rangers. Virgil, once named Lawrenceville for him. Resigned his commission in June 1812; ordered into custody as a Civilian Prisoner in 1813 and taken into New York State; listed a prisoner in Pittsfield, Mass. 1814. His property badly plundered during the War. Died at Virgil, Aug. 26, 1848 age 91 years. McCLELLAN, Martin - Born in Cherry Valley in 1771. Captured by Indians when a child and returned to his family after three months. Promoted Captain July 2, 1812 to Command No. 4 Battalion Coy. (South Niagara Twp.) Killed in action May 27,1813, left widow and five children. Brother of Lieut. John McClellan, 2nd Lincoln Regiment. War damage award for L133.9s. P.R. Grant to widow of land in Westmount. (North Niagara Twp); very ill Oct. 1812; present at Fort George and Lundy's Lane; wounded in the head and hip at the taking of Buffalo Dec. 30, 1813. Became C.O. of the lst Lincoln Regiment 1833. Resigned his commission by letter dated May 4, 1839 because of his wounds. Died at Niagara, 1847 at 62 years of age. His osn Peter C. Servos was the last C.O. of the First Battalion Lincoln Militia.
