ASF Background
• ASF is a part of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
• Approximately 55 people supporting two large-scale data centers and a satellite ground station● Data downlink and satellite commanding● Data archival, processing and distribution● User/technical support and higher level product
development• Supporting NASA for over 15 years as the national SAR archive
and data center● >400TB of archived SAR data● Actively collecting data for ERS-2 and ALOS PALSAR
AK Environmental Satellite Workshop -- 29 Jul 08 Scott A. Arko 3
ASF Core Components
• ASF Ground Station– Two X- and S-band tracking antennas for support of remote-
sensing spacecraft– Member of the NASA Ground Network
• Americas ALOS Data Node– Primary distribution point for ALOS users in North and South
America– Support customers throughout node area through network of
commercial and non-commercial distributors• ASF SAR Data Center
– Operate the national civilian SAR Data Center for NASA– Support active and archive missions for U.S. research users

ASF Support for NOAA
• Near-real-time (NRT) SAR data processing and distribution to National Ice Center and CLASS– Data required in less than 6 hours – Data generally provided in under 1.5 hours
• NRT production and distribution of SAR-based wind data • SAR data processing and distribution to NOAA
researchers• Supported NOAA’s Alaska SAR Demo showing SAR
utility in NOAA applications• Participate in the International Ice Charting Working
Group

Conclusions
ASF has established a long-term relationship with NOAA to provide remote-sensing data for applications in Alaska
We look forward to further collaboration in support of the Alaska segment of the NOAA Satellite Proving Ground
