Hi folks, Mary and I had a great time in Florida. Hated to miss the Peony walk, you all deserve a big pat on the back for a job well done. While in Florida we walked in Tallahassee, one more capitol done plus Quincy, one more letter done. Then it’s off to the convention, with 3 Capitol walks to do on the way, plus Crazy Horse. As Ed Hainline has extended the flame award deadline, I would like to nominate the Adelmans for all the hard work they do and for their hospitality in allowing our club to hold our annual walk there. They planted their first Peonies in 1993 and I have written something up to send to Ed.

Peonies, Hostas Walk
Saturday, May 20
157 participants attended the gardens walk. Great
weather, warm but some cloud cover, not the hot
spell expected helped. As always, our hosts, the
Adelmans, made us and the walkers welcome. The
Peonies couldn’t have been more colorful.
Walkers Jona and Jim Fitzgerald stopped to talk at
the finish table. They knew Rozy from her library
DUTIES years ago. Jona told us that years ago
her mother lived on Quince Rd near the Hosta
Gardens and provided a tea Party for Volkswalkers.
Do you remember?
Pheobe was surprised when she was spotted by the
daughter of her youngest sister’s best friend after
many a year.
Sue and Nita joined the workers wok at Ping’s in
Albany after the walk, celebrating the walk and
Phoebe’s birthday .

Millersburg was discussed. The Problems: a start
point and whether the Millersburg Park rest rooms
are open all the time.

The 2017 Winter Walk Challenge drawing was
held in Shady Cove, Oregon on May 12, 2017
at the OTSVA State Meeting.
The results of the extended contest (January 1
to April 30) are:
1st Place – $100.00 REI Gift Card – Julia W.

3rd Place – $50.00 REI Gift Card – Dick Baker
(Rose City Roamers & Columbia River

I want to thank everyone who participated in
this year’s Winter Walk Contest, especially
with the lousy weather we had for a lot of the
winter months making it difficult to get out and
do a walk or even wanting to.
As a bonus, thanks to Louise Baltes for
donating her time to make 3 towels for the most
walks walked – Gold 1st Place, Silver 2nd
Place and Bronze 3rd Place. These were
awarded for the person who did the most walks
and then the next most walks and then the
bronze towel was awarded from a drawing
since there was a 6 way tie for 3rd place.
The winners of the towels are:
1st Place Gold Medal Towel – Ethel Wood
with 80 walks (Columbia River Volkssport
Club & Rose City Roamers)
2nd Place Silver Medal Towel – Karen McG.
with 40 walks (Willamette Wanderers,

Fitwalkers AVA Challenge?
At the May Fitwalkers meeting, Don handed
out sheets showing AVA challenges completed
in the past. They can’t be duplicated for 10
years, and when they reach maturity and can be
repeated, the originating AVA club gets first
dibs.
Don wants us to find a challenge that our club
could sponsor, then write up a description to
entice AVA walkers to do our challenge. The
top idea was Carousels, with another two
possibilities Skate Parks or Cabooses. Karen W
is researching the Carousel challenge.

Walking in NYC
Great Saunter: When I was 11, my family
moved from Indiana to a NJ suburb of NYC
where my father worked. As a young adult I
worked, lived and married in Manhattan. I
have retained a lifelong interest in NYC. A
favorite book is Waterfront: A Journey Around
Manhattan by Phillip Lopate where he relates
his walking experiences around this Island. I
thought it would be wonderful if I could do
this too. Last year I learned about the annual
Great Saunter held on the first Saturday in May
by the Shorewalkers. The entry fee was just
$25 by joining this non-AVA club. This was
their 32nd
year in walking the 32 miles around
Manhattan in one day from 7:30 AM to 7:30
PM. So I decided to join the 2017 Great
Saunter (https://shorewalkers.org/the-great-
saunter-event).
But 32 miles is 51.49Km and I had
never done more than a 10/11Km in a day. I
thought I could actually do a 30Km (18.6
miles) with training. I had walked some areas
in 2012 after doing 2 of the 4 AVA Manhattan
walks (one can still do these walks with great
informational directions). For my training here
I would need 6 hours when it wasn’t
raining. My walks usually started from my
North Albany home which meant at the end I
would be trudging up the hills on North Albany
Rd and Gibson Hill Rd. I did variations of
present/former Fitwalkers’ walks and I did
meet my 30Km goal.
On May 6th
I joined 1349 other
walkers, mostly young although there were
some oldsters like me. Weather was perfect. I
loved walking through parks by the Hudson &
Harlem Rivers, less exciting were the two
stretches paralleling busy vehicle parkways. I
walked mostly by myself unlike the
majority. There were those speedsters who
didn’t stop except for the brief lunch break. I
stopped at a bakery stand at a Farmer’s Market;
the young woman who served me is going to
attend Reed College this Fall. Of the 1350
walkers, 695 did the entire 32 miles (51%). I
stopped after 30½ Km or almost 19 miles and
could have continued but needed to meet
Paul. It was a great one-time experience.
Jane’s Walks (www.janeswalk.org/) : On
KLCC FM right before we left for NYC, I
heard a story about Jane’s Walks (named in
honor of Jane Jacobs, an urban activist) being
held internationally the weekend of May 5-
7. There were going to be about 65 free
historic walks in NYC. We wanted to do at
least two on Friday but then the Big Rain hit
Manhattan. So we did one on Sunday which
was most enjoyable. I learned the New York
City library system routinely offers free
neighborhood walks
(http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-
tours/walking-tours/).
New York City is a wonderful walking city!
