Solutions for built environment

Decentralized systems Less spilling Water reuse options Energy integration Resource recovery The chances for economic solutions?

Three Wishes for EIP

Wish 1: Better and more reliable knowledge on quantity and quality of (European) industrial used/waste water to identify chances. This could may be set up on a confidential way by independent institutions? Wish 2: EU legislation for war reuse and recycling, with attention for

Increased tax on fresh water an water discharge Innovation to reduce water reuse costs Need for water treatment options and monitoring

Wish 3: Better investment climate/programs for PPP on new technologies and demonstrations (remark: water treatment is capital intensive with long pay back times). Suggestion special funds or crowd funding with low risks

Definitions

Reuse: Flow stream is returned (recycled) to an earlier stage in the same processing sequence. Recycle: Flow stream is returned to a stage of another processing sequence.

Definitions II:

Waste water: water discharged from the factory for no other reason than to get rid of it, in most cases after treatment in a WWTP, mostly to surface water some times deep into earth Used water: water coming out of a unit operation (cooling solving , etc) Reused water: is used water for the same unit operation or to an earlier unit operation in the same processing sequence Recycled water: is used water returned to a unit operation of an other processing sequence or for city- or agriculture use

Conclusions

Water reuse and /or recycling can be a solution to scarcity Chaleng e: Simplicity and costs Costs can go down by standardization and modularization. Simplicity by plug and play technologies. R&D, testing, demo’s and removal of non-techmnical barriers are necessary

Reuse will be made possible with
