Pike was born in Boston, MA. When he was 18, he joined an expedition and traveled west. Pike settled in Little Rock, AR.

Pike’s writing, political and law careers developed whileworking for the Arkansas Advocate, a pro-Whig paper.

Pike left the Whigs because of their split over slavery,and joined the Know-Nothing Party.
