This would have to be my favourite magazine. You have the best interviews and have introduced me to great new artists, some I have never heard of before and others I have forgotten about. I’m going to become a member soon. Fantastic magazine, keep up the great work. Alex

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hi, Andew, Great Question! Once I had finished my degree in Interactive Multimedia, I worked for Mag Publishing and after about three years I heard they were looking for new ideas. So, I pitched them Silence and after six months they called me and then after a year of negotiations silence was started. All you have to do is study hard and keep up with current technology. study different magazines and always try to come up with different and unique ideas and designs. Nothing comes easy, everything is hard work and takes a lot of time. But its worth it. Anthony Colicchio

This is a great magazine. I am wondering if you can explain how Silence came about? I have always wanted to work for a music magazine. I am currently studying graphic design, can you please give me some pointers on how to further my career in this industry? Andrew

I look forward to reading your magazine each month. It’s filled with heaps of information on all my favourite artists and it also gives me the opportunity to read the latest of music news. I love the competitions!! The article last month on vinyl Vs. MP3 was really interesting and gives a great overview of how music delivery has evolved. Frankie

SILENCE

You have been in the music industry for eight years does performing get any easier?“Not really, even though I just came off a 101 show world tour, I still get nervous before each show but as the show goes on each night eventually the nervous feelings disappear.”

Six albums, that’s almost one a year. How do you keep it so fresh?“I want each of my albums to be unique; they each have to have a different sound and a different image. If not, I can wait until the right Idea comes to me, I’m in no hurry. I don’t want people to get sick of hearing the same style of music over and over again.”

Will we see a seventh album at the end of the year?“Not too sure yet but I have had meetings about it and the only thing I can say is that we have come up with a fresh new sound but I have not started recording anything yet.”

Is it true that there was going to be a Loud re-release?“Yes there was going to be a Loud re-release but I changed my mind at the last minute and we ended up recording Talk That Talk, I felt like what we were recording for the re-release did not fit with Loud.”

What is your favourite song of your career?“That is a hard question to answer because I have so many favourites, What’s My Name from Loud because at the time I released it, it was so different to the music you were hearing on the radio, and plus it features one of my favourite rappers Drake” (VHIS, 2010,)

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?“I would have to say Bob Marley as I grew up listening to his music and it has been a big influence on my life and my music career”.(VHIS, 2010,)

What is your favourite album of all time?“There are so many great albums, but my favourite one to listen to is The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, it is such an iconic album and how she was such a positive role model for people of that generation and how the lyrics are deep and the melodies are beautiful.”(VHIS, 2010,)

What inspired you to become an artist and create music?“When I was growing up I was inspired by a lot of reggae music but especially sappy love songs and artists such as Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Bob Marley.”(VHIS, 2010,)

07

When recording an album how do you decide what songs stay and what songs go?“I only record the songs I like, I try to record as many songs as possible because you don’t know how they sound until you hear the final recording. Once I have a list of songs I separate them into the ones I know will work well and the ones I know don’t match the sound that I’m going for.“

Besides music you are also staring in the blockbuster Battleship. Tell us how this came about?“I have always wanted to try acting and well you never know if you would like something until you try it, so I gave it a go.”

How was it like working with Liam Neeson?“I was really nervous for the first three or four days on set because I did not want to make a fool of myself in front of him, but then we got to know each other and he is a great guy, really talented”

What was your favourite part of the film process?“Well, the rehearsal stage where you can make as many mistakes as you like and it’s interesting how much the script changes in that time.” “The way it is all put together is really interesting and fun” “I think one day in the middle of a shoot we actually shot the ending before one of the beginning scenes so it was interesting to see how it all came together in the end.”

Describe your character Cora Raikes?“Well, I play the weapons officer who is in control of all the types of weapons on board the ship” “I’m strong and don’t care who I crush, I love taking over control”

Does this mean you have caught the acting bug?“Not really, I will always be in the music business, but would like to make more movies if the opportunity ever comes up again” “It is not something I would say no to”

Do you ever read what people write about you on the Internet and in magazines?“No never I try to stay away from all the rubbish people say about me” most of which is made up just to make a sale and most of it is not true at all.”

What is next for you?“Well I’m definitely going to do more movies this year, I’m going to be having my own fashion show coming out at the end of the year and you will definitely be hearing new music from me either this year or early next year.”

THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME

EVA SIMONS IS BACKEva Simons became famous worldwide back in 2008 when her unfinished demo song entitled Silly Boy was leaked online. The song gained immense popularity with over twenty million hits on You Tube. Originally when the song was leaked it was said to be a duet between Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Kanya West posted the song on his official blog, writing, “This song is going to be a smash”. With the songs popularity growing and growing, Eva signed with EMI records and released the song as her official first solo single at the end of 2008. After the Release of Silly Boy she ended up moving forward and leaving EMI records and she never released the album she planned to release in early 2009. (Wikipedia, 2012)

Having revealed that she was in fact the real artist who sings the song, fans were still a bit confused as to why Rihanna and Lady Gaga did not sing it. This was all cleared up when a You Tube video was released similar to the “Leave Britney Alone” video explaining who Eva Simons was.

In 2010 she teamed up with Afrojack and released another worldwide smash hit titled Take Over Control. She has also teamed up with LMFAO and featured on their album Sorry For Party Rocking released in 2011 on the track Best Night. She will also feature on the track, Party Like an Animal from Will I Am’s new album Willpower to be released at the end of this year.(Wikipedia, 2012)

In the four years since she released Silly Boy, Eva has been in the studio working on new music and touring the world.

She has been working with producers such as Red Floo, Afrojack, Will I Am and Kisso, just to name a few. She has had a busy 2012 so far as she has teamed up with Apster on the track I Need More, has just finished touring with LMFAO, signed with Interscope Records and has released her second solo single I Don’t Like You off her soon to be released debut studio album Eva-lution (Wikipedia, 2012)
