‘TOPES FEND OFF Z’S 11-10: The Albuquerque Isotopes built a big lead and withstood a late charge by the New Orleans Zephyrs to earn an ulcer-inducing 11-10 victory on a spectacular Saturday Night at Isotopes Park. New Orleans surged out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Vinny Rottino led off the game with a solo homer and Mike Cervenak added a two-run blast before the Isotopes answered in the bottom of the first with two of their own to trim the lead to 3-2. Albuquerque would tack on two more in the second on back-to-back RBI singles by Dee Gordon and Ivan De Jesus Jr. to give the home team its first lead at 4-3. The Isotopes busted the game open in the third when Trayvon Robinson led off the inning with a walk and scored on a triple by Jamie Hoffmann to increase the lead to 5-3. After an RBI single by A.J. Ellis, Justin Sellers crushed a two-run homer deep to left that augmented the ‘Topes cushion to 8-3. A two-run homer by Zephyrs second baseman Jose Lopez in the top of the fifth brought the visitors to within 8-5, but the Isotopes proceeded to score a run in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to seize an 11-5 lead. Things started to get dicey for the ‘Topes in the top of the eighth when New Orleans scored three times to draw within 11-8, but that was a mere prelude to a white-knuckle ninth. With runners on first and second and one out, reliever Roy Corcoran walked Jorge Padilla to load the bases before issuing a walk to Vinny Rottino that scored Ozzie Martinez and cut the lead to 11-9. Corcoran then issued another bases loaded free pass to Joe Thurston, scoring Miguel Fermin and bringing New Orleans all the way back to within one run at 11-10. The veteran reliever persevered however, getting Lopez to hit into a double-play that ended the threat while preserving the 11-10 win. SEXTON HOPES TO SNAP A STREAK: Right-hander Tim Sexton takes the mound looking to bust out of a four-game losing streak, the longest skid by a ‘Topes pitcher this season. After starting out 3-0, Sexton has dropped to 3-4 on the season, with his last defeat coming in his last start vs. Oklahoma City on July 19, when he yielded six runs, five earned, on 12 hits in six innings while walking two and striking out two in a 9-5 ‘Topes defeat, the last time Albuquerque dropped a game. One thing Sexton has been able to do is mitigate potential damage while working out of trouble. Over his last five starts at Isotopes Park, the right-hander has allowed a total of 47 hits in 27.2 IP, yet has only allowed 18 earned runs in that span, a comparatively low number considering the number of base-runners. COMING ON STRONG: The Isotopes have now won four games in a row, tying a season-high winning streak set three previous times, and have been rapidly closing ground on division-leading Round Rock in the PCL’s American Southern Division. Since July 21, the ‘Topes have made up four games in four days and now sit just four games in back of the Express, the closest Albuquerque has been to first place since it was four games behind on July 8. It helps that the Isotopes continue to play well against the Zephyrs at home. Albuquerque is 5-1 so far this year against the Z’s at Isotopes Park. GETTING OFFENSIVE: In six games played at Isotopes Park this year, the Isotopes and Zephyrs have combined for 116 total runs, an average of just over 19 total tallies scored a contest. Luckily for the Isotopes, they’ve been ahead in most of those shoot-outs, outscoring New Orleans 64-52. With all that offense, you can expect to be here a while. The ‘Topes and Zephyrs average time of game in six contests played at Isotopes Park this year is 3:10. SPEE-DEE: Last night, Dee Gordon stole his 30th base of the season, which is tied for third most in Isotopes history with 43 games still to play. The team record for stolen bases in a season is 44, set by Reggie Abercrombie in 2007. Wilson Valdez swiped 33 bags in 2003 and Eric Reed nabbed 30 for the ‘Topes in 2007. Gordon is currently second in the PCL in stolen bases behind Fresno’s Tyler Gra- ham (48), despite the shortstop missing a month while playing for the Dodgers. SLAMMIN’ SELLS: For the first time this season, Justin Sellers has gone yard in back-to-back games, bringing his total number of home runs this season to 11, just three dingers short of his career-high set last year. Of his 11 homers, nine have come at Isotopes Park. BIG HOMESTAND ROLLS ON: The ‘Topes’ big homestand continues tonight with the first and only appearance of the season by the Zooperstars, presented by Arby’s. Tomorrow, the Isotopes will play their final Business Person’s Special of the 2011 season with first pitch slated for 12:05 PM.
