Application

Multiservice Gateway systems arebasically needed in flexible transportnetworks.

The unrestricted ability of the AlcatelOPTINEXTM 1641 SX to perform crossconnections between all kinds of PDH(Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) andSDH ports ensures the highestflexibility and performance for allpresent and future networks.

The Alcatel OPTINEXTM 1641 SX helpscustomers to migrate smoothly from aPDH to an SDH network, so quasistatic networks with multiplexers andmechanical distribution frames can be

upgraded into dynamic networksproviding fast reaction times forchanging traffic patterns (e.g. LeasedLine Service).

The OMSG can be implemented in a widerange of configurations, e.g. meshed,ring hub configurations as shown in thefigure Network Applications.

The in-service extensibility of theAlcatel OPTINEXTM 1641 SX byadding features and increasingcapacity up to 960 STM-1 equivalentports provides the network providerwith a future-safe network element.

Powerful monitoring functions allowacquiring the current state of thenetwork paths.

All operations on the AlcatelOPTINEXTM 1641SX can be controlledlocally by means of a craft terminal orremotely by means of the OperationSystem (OS).

Network protection methodsguarantee reliability of services tocustomers.

The Alcatel OPTINEXTM 1641 SXprovides an extremely secure, highlyavailable network with protectionschemes such as Multiplex SectionProtection (MSP for STM-N

interfaces or Sub-Network ConnectionProtection (SNCP) for all bit rates.Linear MSP complies with ITU-T G.841 and G.783.

The STM-16 partsystem also supportsthe Multiplex Section SharedProtection Rings (MS-SPRing).

Design

One of the primary philosophiesbehind the design of the AlcatelOPTINEXTM 1641 SX is that the system can be extended in both size andfunctionality according to customerdemands.

The OMSG matrix and networkinterface can be expanded simply byadding hardware as needed.

It can be equipped with anycombination of I/O partsystems from2 Mbit/s to STM-16 both in ETSI andin SONET hierarchy.This enables customers to tailor thesystem to his specific needs. The equipment practice of the AlcatelOPTINEXTM 1641 SX complies with theETSI standards T/TM02-13.For redundancy reasons thepartsystems are arranged in twinsubracks.

One rack houses two twin subracks;the racks are mounted in rows.

The matrix is a non-blocking Closmatrix from the Alcatel Large MatrixConfiguration family LMC960. Not fully equipped matrices may behitlessly upgraded during operation. The following configurations areavailable:

LMC960 with a maximum capacityof 960 STM-1 equivalent datastreams.

LMC 960/384 with a maximumcapacity of 384 STM-1 equivalentdata streams.

The Alcatel OPTINEXTM 1641 SX is anintegral part of the Alcatel SDHNetwork Management strategy. It is controlled by the Element Manager (EM) Alcatel 1353 SH. Since the EM controls different typesof network element, the resources ofseveral EMs are managed by theRegional Network Manager (RM)Alcatel 1354 RM.

Operation

The Alcatel OPTINEXTM 1641 SXreceives the incoming synchronoussignals STM-N (STM-16, STM-4, STM-1) and processes them accordingto ITU-T and ETSI.

The plesiochronous signals (140,45/34, 2 Mbit/s) are mapped intothe corresponding containers VC-4,VC-3, and VC-12 complying with ITU-T Recommendation G.707 andETSI/SONET requirements.

The matrix of the Alcatel OPTINEXTM

1641 SX provides cross connectionfor all container types mentioned.

All central partsystems, i.e. the matrix,clock generation and distribution, as well as control, operate fullyredundant, i.e. they are (1+1)protected.

All electrical I/O part-systems aredesigned for (1:N) equipmentprotection, for the optical I/Opartsystems (1+1) line and equipmentprotection is provided.

The Alcatel OPTINEXTM 1641 SX canbe equipped modularly with

STM-16 optical ports complyingwith G.957. The STM-16 opticalinterfaces are of the short-haul andlong-haul types operating atwavelengths of 1300 and 1550(G.957); all standard types ofinterface are available. Colouredlasers are provided for direct andcost-effective interconnection withWDM equipment.

STM-4 optical ports complying withG.957.The STM-4 optical interfaces are S-4.1, L-4.1, L-4.2 and Joint Engineering (JE) types.

STM-1 optical ports complying with G.957. The STM-1 opticalinterfaces are S-1.1, L-1.1, L-1.2,and JE types.

STM-1 electrical ports, complyingwith G.703.

PDH electrical ports (140, 45/34, 2 Mbit/s),complying with G.703.

The task of the clock partsystem is todistribute and supervise the clock andtiming reference signals. The systemclock can be synchronized to one offour 2.048 MHz timing references inthe modes

The clock system can be used inSynchronization Supply Unit (SSU)mode or in Synchronous EquipmentClock (SEC) mode; it complies withthe ITU-T RecommendationsG.812/813 as regards the oscillatorholdover stability and with G.703 asregards the reference inputs. The system clock distribution in theOMSG is redundant.

The OMSG uses a three-tieredhierarchical distributed processorsystem for control. The centralprocessor, Administrative Unit AU,hosts all application and configurationsoftware. The application softwarecomprises the internal AlcatelInformation Model interface whichenables connection of the OMSG tothe OS system-specific applicationsoftware. The AU provides a non-volatile memory storage system for allsystem data. The second stage of thecontrol system consists of the satelliteprocessors controlling the twinsubracks, the third stage of theprocessing elements on the boards. To protect the internal datacommunication all links andprocessing elements are redundant.

Control access to the OMSG can beobtained by means of a local orremote Element Manager EM and bymeans of the OS (Network Management). The following control interfaces areavailable:

Q interface for control by an OS

Management information via DCCwith full support of IS-IS and ES-ISrouting.

The EM workstation has a windowsystem based on HP OPENVIEW andprovides a user-friendly graphicalinterface.

The operator is guided by the systemthroughout the working sequences; alloperator inputs are checked.Functions available to the operatorcan be configured by the SecurityManagement. Access rights forfunctions and users (operator) can beset by an administrator. The followingmanagement functions are available:
