Opiates are better known as painkillers or narcotics.

Not all pain relievers are opiate based, but many prescription ones are.

They relieve pain and induce a state of sedation and apathy

So many times we try to “work through the pain.” Do you think it is safe to workout while taking pain medication for an injury or after surgery? What if you are not working out the injured part?

Common pregnancy complications include miscarriage, placental abruption, poor fetal growth, premature delivery, low birth weight and stillbirth.

In sufficient quantity, opiates can depress the heart rate of the baby sufficiently to kill the fetus

Most babies of heroin users suffer from withdrawal symptoms after birth, including fever, sneezing, trembling, irritability, diarrhea, vomiting, continual crying and, occasionally, seizures.

Babies exposed to heroin before birth also face a ten-fold increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

There are three major misconceptions about Methadone :

”Methadone is more addictive than heroin”. Although withdrawal from methadone does last significantly longer than that from heroin, methadone is not more addictive

”Methadone depresses the immune system”. Methadone is the only narcotic that does not depress the immune system.

”Methadone rots the teeth”. Many heroin addicts do not take care of their teeth, but when stabilized on methadone, individuals become aware of their dental problems

Methadone does not produce the “rush” opiates do and blocks the opiate cravings

Methadone is often a drug people take for a lifetime

Methadone is useful in pain management Methadone is physically addictive

Therefore, should people be encouraged to use methadone for pain management or to stop using other opiates?
