Stages of Alcohol

Poisoning1. Any quantity of alcohol can depress (slow

down) the central nervous system. Alcohol in any dose can slow or stop the body’s involuntary processes such as breathing, heartbeat, and the gag reflex which prevents choking.

Stages of Alcohol Poisoning

2. Even after the victim loses consciousness, alcohol continues to circulate through his or her system. The victim may suffer from lack of oxygen and/or hypothermia (low body temperature) which can lead to cardiac arrest and brain damage. The victim may choke on his or her own vomit and die.

Page 14: Alcohol Binge Drinking. What is Binge Drinking? 5 or more drinks in one session for a male. 4 or more drinks in one session for a female. 4.4 million

3. Both breathing and pulse rate may grow slower, become irregular and finally stop. When breathing is significantly slowed, the person suffers from lack of oxygen. Coma and irreversible brain damage will occur. Death is possible.
