Welcome tothe village directory

Hi everyone,

What a month it’s been, as I fi nished April’s magazine in early March it appeared that spring was in the air but then very but soon after the cold weather returned with a vengeance and we even had snow. As I write spring is again trying to break through, the sun is shining and it’s a beautilful day, hopefully this time it’s here to stay.

Eight years ago, when I started my fi rst magazine, my niece Sophie used to create “Kid’s Corner” for me, she was just 13 at the time and did a fantastic job. Now, having just celebrated her 21st birthday and about to graduate from University, she’s helping me out yet again. The two of us went along to the newly renovated King’s Head in Wye this month, where Sophie could get the lowdown on the changes to the pub and interview Celebrity Masterchef winner Liz McClarnon, the pub’s Food Ambassador. You’ll fi nd Sophie’s report in this month’s magazine on page12, and along with it on our “Seasonal Delights” page, Liz has very kindly provided us with one of her own recipes for you try at home. I hope you’ll enjoy reading Sophie’s contribution and possibly trying out Liz’s.

Enjoy!

~ Debbie

If you missed the fi rst half of the vegetable growing season due to the weather and the ground being far to cold to work, sow or plant in, don’t worry. May is a great month to get cracking in the vegetable garden. The soil is warm, rain is still plentiful (in theory) and the sun’s climbing higher in the sky. It’s a little too

late to sow some of the early crops, and those that need a long time to grow and then ripen, but you can catch up by buying plug plants from the garden centre (or even the supermar-ket). Most now off er quite a good range – you’ll certainly fi nd tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, leeks and some brassicas.

It’s defi nitely not too late to sow peas, beet-root, carrots and salad leaves. And it’s just the right time to sow tender beans, courgettes, sweetcorn, pumpkins and squash. Be care-ful not to sow these tender crops directly into the soil until the danger of frost has passed, as they’ll need protection if the nights are cold. I normally sow these crops under cover to plant out towards the end of the month.

If you want some fl owers (unfortunately for next year), then this is also a good month for sowing biennials. Biennials are like annuals, but they spread their life over two seasons instead of one, putting on leafy growth in the fi rst year and then fl owering the following spring. This means that they fl ower early in the season when not much else has got going (they make good accompaniments to spring bulbs). Many, like Foxgloves, Forget-me-nots and Honesty are shade tolerant, and most have a (mostly) welcome habit of self-seeding, so you should only need to sow them once. Sow them in situ, or in a seedbed for transplanting in the autumn.

Hello Everyone, Mowgli here. How are all of you? Well we all hope.

This month I am going to share an adventure we all had in that silly snow in March. Ebony and I couldn’t believe it when we started to see the snowfl akes fall. We thought that there had been quite enough snow for one winter already! We went to our radiator beds and snuggled up in the warm. Jane wasn’t as sensible and she and Josh set off to visit a friend in the car. They didn’t get far as the roads were very slippery so they were soon back. This pleased us as Jane built a huge fi re and we were all very warm.

The adventures and problems came later in the afternoon when the snow started to drift. Clive and Rosemary were both working at the clinic that day. It took Rosemary 2 hours to get from the Clinic into Sellindge on the A20 and she eventually parked the car in a lay-by and rang us to say she was walking to our house. We were a bit worried about this as she is still recovering from a broken leg! Shortly after that Clive rang to say he was going to try and get home but he had heard that Lympne was cut off due to the snow and a lot of stuck lorries....After a very long time the doorbell rang and Rosemary had arrived. We sat on her to help warm her up by by the fi re (coff ee and whisky also helped we think....). After a while we heard from Clive- he couldn’t get to the village either and had parked his car and was walking. He managed to get home looking like a snowman and went straight to check on our silly old goats. They were quite pleased with the situation in their nice warm shed. When it snows they know they get extra food (on account of Dennis’s great age and the fact he has got pneumonia twice) and they

Mowgli

were looking forward to a great bucket of warm macaroni. Clive was less pleased about this we think as it was meant to be going into macaroni cheese for his lunches!

Anyway, the snow kept coming and there was no way that Rosemary was going to get home so she stayed the night (I visited her at intervals through the night just to wake her up and check she didn’t need anything....)and the next morning she and Clive got up very early to walk back to their cars, dug them out and get back to the Clinic. The patients that came to the Clinic during the snow were all very brave about the weather. One dog even arrived on a sledge! If only I was allowed to go on a sledge- I would promise to be good!

Other news is that two very naughty herring gulls have taken at residence on our roof and it is almost a full time job to keep them under control by staring at them and miaowing from the window sill in the bedroom. It is quite exhausting as you all know it is already a full time job for me to run this house!

From the outside the Kings Head appears like any other quaint, village pub, however upon entering, the pub’s unique charm soon becomes apparent. This beautiful old Victorian coaching house is almost unrecognisable following its recent, tasteful refurbishment. Despite its contemporary new look the pub still feels instantly homely and welcoming, boasting the traditional features desired of a cosy Kent pub, such as roaring open fi res, comfy arm-chairs and cosy nooks hidden throughout.

The inviting atmosphere was matched by the warm welcome we received from the pub’s landlords who proudly told us all about their plans for the pub. They expressed their passion and enthusiasm to create a vibrant, sociable environment which it is hoped will bring the community together. They are keen to involve as many local suppliers and businesses as possible in a bid to support the local community, further enhancing this sense of community spirit. Local people and businesses are celebrated in a collection of artistic photographs capturing the true essence of the Kent countryside, and taken personally by one of the pub’s landlords.

We were presented with an enticing menu which off ers a quirky twist on traditional ‘pub grub’ classics. You’ll fi nd something for everyone here, from a delicious cheese fondue, served with glazed ham and sourdough, a great dish for sharing, to Hot Chocolate with a twist, served in the form of a lollipop which is slowly disolved in a tall glass of warm milk. A diverse specials board is regularly updated to keep the menu fresh and exciting.

We were lucky enough to sample this month’s featured dish, a mouth-watering beef-wellington which is the exclusive recipe of none other than Celebrity Master-Chef Winner and Atomic Kitten member Liz McClarnon. We even had the pleasure of meeting Liz, the pub’s proud food ambassador, who admitted to enjoying regular retreats to the Kent countryside to visit her close friends at the Kings Head. Liz’s passion for cooking was clear as she fl itted in and out of kitchen to check the food was being prepared to her high standards.

Having sampled her food Liz joined us for a chat. We ask her about her love of cooking and she shared her dream of one day having a restaurant of her own in a rural area much like Kent. The next day she was rushing back to London in preparation for Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway

A New Quilting Group is starting in the Oak Room, Smeeth TN25 6SA. If you are interested in quilting or patchwork why not come along and learn new skills and share your expertise with like minded people. Beginners and advanced levels are welcome. We are having an informal meet and greet on Saturday 27th April from 10

with Atomic Kitten. Their involvement in The Big Reunion will keep her busy as the tour starts this month and will come to the O2 Arena on May 14th. We wished her luck with the tour and hope that Kent continues to provide a relaxing retreat from time to time.

Overall the delicious food, fantastic company and pleasant atmosphere made our evening at the Kings Head an extremely enjoyable experience and I look forward to returning again soon. Plans are well underway to provide accomodation too, so be sure to head down to the Kings Head to see what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Heat 1tbsp of olive oil in a small pan on a medium heat, add the garlic and shallot then cook for 1-2 minutes until soft and golden.

Add half of the parsley and port and boil until the liquid has reduced by half (this will look a little syrupy).

Use a saucer to cut out two circles of pastry and lay on a non-stick tray. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes.

Dissolve the stock cube in 1 ⁄2 pint of boiling water and add to the pan with the remaining port. Gently leave to simmer whilst preparing the rest of the dish.

Heat the butter in a small frying pan until just melted, add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper. Then cook gently until slightly soft in texture.

Once cooked add a drizzle of truffl e or other fl avoured oil and keep warm.

Place the remaining oil in a heavy ovenproof frying pan or skillet, heat until it’s just about to smoke. Next, add the beef, allowing it to sear for 1-2 minutes

Season with salt and pepper, then turn the fi llet over using a pair of tongs. Sear again for 1-2 minutes and season. Add

SUNDAY 2ND JUNE 2013Gates open at 10.30am until 5.30pm

Car Parking is free

For the past seventeen years, under the auspices of the Hamstreet and District Sports and Leisure Association, the Hamstreet Country Show has been an annual two-day event to raise funds, initially for improvements to the Hamstreet Sports Field (i.e., drainage. fl ood lighting , multi-use court, etc.) and, more recently, for the construction of the new Sports Pavilion.

The two-day Hamstreet Country Show will not take place this year. Instead, a new single-day event is being arranged under the name “Hamstreet Festival of Transport”, with a few diff erent ideas and surprises.

Any profi ts made at this year’s event will be used towards the purchase and installation of a disabled stairlift in the new Hamstreet Sports Pavilion.

This year, the Festival of Transport coincides with the sixtieth anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second (which took place on 2nd June 1953). In celebration of this, the 2013 Festival of Transport will highlight that era.

As in previous years, the entertainment will include a large selection of classic cars, as well as other vehicles and machinery, together with a full programme of events in the arena. One of these will be a Fun Dog Show.

There will be a variety of food and craft stalls, together with several working exhibits. The aviation side will include a model aircraft display, helicopter pleasure fl ights and microlight activities. For younger members of the family, there will be a puppet show, clowns and a fun-fair.

There will be a wide selection of refreshments available and a licensed bar.

Nordic Walking….Coming to a

Village Near You!If you’re out and about in the village, chances are that you’ll run into a group of people, all striding purposefully, each with a set of walking sticks. To some, they might look skiers in denial about the end of the snow season, but they’re actually out doing something called Nordic Walking.

What Is Nordic Walking?Originally devised as a method for competitive cross country skiers to maintain fi tness, Nordic Walking has developed into an exercise activity that cuts across age and fi tness barriers, allowing people who always thought they hated traditional exercise to participate in a pursuit that allows them to get fi t without even noticing!

12 Reasons to Nordic Walk1. Burns 20-40% more calories than an

average walk2. Whole body workout3. Lessens impact on joints4. Great for neck, shoulders and backs5. Increases cardiovascular endurance6. Builds muscle strength & endurance7. Easy to learn8. Sociable and fun9. Aff ordable10. Can be done anywhere!11. “Green” exercise12. Suitable for everyone

Try this simple exercise to get an idea of the eff ect of Nordic Walking on the upper body:

• Sitting at your desk, raise both arms out in front of you, extending them as if off ering a friendly handshake.

• Make a loose fi st of each hand and place both, thumbs up on your desk.

• Sitting upright, alternately press one fi st, then the other fi rmly into the desk. Do this repeatedly for 15 – 20 repetitions.

• As you press, notice how a wave of contractions passes through your abdominal muscles, with your upper back, arm, shoulder and chest muscles contracting each time you push.

How does that feel? Remember, if you’re out Nordic Walking, you’ll perform 1,800 – 2,200 contractions of all these muscles per mile!

Nordic Walking East Kent runs classes in villages in the Ashford, Canterbury and Folkestone areas. Call 0845 486 0899 or email [email protected] to book a free taster session

FinanceIgnorance is No Defence

In my parents’ day, money was a simpler matter. In many families they went to work, earned their money, paid their taxes and saved what they could. When it came time to buy a house, they approached the bank manager to see if he would be kind enough to lend them three times the husband’s salary (the wife stayed at home looking after the children) for a repayment mortgage which was paid off over 20 or 25 years before he got his fi nal salary scheme pension.

By the time I started earning money, it had become much more complicated. We were two people paying the mortgage needing much higher salary multiples to aff ord rising house prices. Then came the ending of MIRAS, the emergence of interest only mortgages and endowment policies to pay them off (or not as it turned out in some cases). Pensions became more complex too, with choices for opting out of SERPS, private pension schemes, money purchase schemes and fi nal salary scheme pensions became a distant memory for most.

Throw in the scandals of mis-selling of endowments and PPI to name just two, and it’s clear even for my generation the fi nancial world has become a confusing place. Hedge funds, derivatives, swaps – even the so-called experts struggle to make sense of it.

The common thing throughout all these generations, my parents, myself, our children, is that none of us have ever had any fi nancial education. Not one single lesson in the classroom at my school was ever devoted to personal fi nancial matters. The fi nancial company employees are taught how to sell to us, but we have little idea of how to make a judgement on what they tell us.

At last, this should be about to change.

In 2011, 118,000 people signed an e-petition via the MoneySavingExpert.com website to force the issue of Financial Education in Schools to be debated in Parliament.

Draft proposals have been published recently and are still under consultation into April, but it is expected that from September 2014, fi nancial education will form part of the national curriculum in England, with 11-16 year olds receiving it as part of their compulsory citizenship education.

Plans are that pupils in Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14) will be taught the function and use of money, personal budgeting, money management and a range of fi nancial products and services.

From 14 to 16 in Key Stage 4, they will be taught about wages, taxes, debt, credit, fi nancial risk

plus more sophisticated fi nancial services and products.

The Government wants students to have “the fi nancial skills to enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis as well as to plan for future fi nancial needs.”

It is clear that the lessons are long overdue. You only have to look at how much the fi nancial world has changed in the last 40 years to see that what is needed (and will hopefully be taught in schools) is a good grounding in the ‘basics’ of understanding personal fi nance. It is to be hoped that the generation that receive this education realise that their learning will need to continue long after they leave the classroom as the fi nancial world continues to evolve.

If knowledge is power, having the right fi nancial knowledge will help our children avoid the mistakes with money we may have made along the way, and that can only be a good thing.

In the meantime, pass on what you know already Mums and Dads, and a free Teen Cash Class is available at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/Teenagers-cash-class.By Anthony Tavistock

THE NEWS AT 10Del and Peeps sat down at a bar and stared up at the TV where the 10pm

news was coming on. The news crew were covering a story of a man on a ledge of a

large building preparing to jump.

Del looked at Peeps and said, ‘Do you think he‛ll jump?‛ Peeps says, ‘You know, I bet he will jump.‛ Del replied, ‘Well, I bet he won‛t.‛ Peeps placed a £20 note on the

bar and said ‘You‛re on!‛

Just as Del placed his money on the bar, the guy on the ledge did a swan dive off

the building falling to his death.

Del was very upset but willingly handed £20 to Peeps, saying, ‘Fair‛s fair. Here‛s your money.‛ Peeps replied, ‘I can‛t take

your money I saw this earlier on the 5pm news so I knew he would jump.‛

Del replied ‘I did too; but I didn‛t think he‛d do it again.‛ Peeps took the money!

IN A VACUUMDel and Peeps were playing Trivial

Pursuit one night. It was Del‛s turn. He rolled the dice and landed on Science &

TheAdventures

of Del & Peeps

Nature. His question was:‘If you are in a vacuum and someone calls

your name, can you hear it?‛He thought for a while and then asked

‘Is it switched on or off?‛

And Finally...Del & Peeps were sitting on a park bench

enjoying the weather when Del turns to Peeps and says “Come on lets go, my backside is going to sleep.” Peeps says“ I know, I heard it snore three times.”
