Liste: Booths to WatchText by Emily Steer

Alongside the enormous annual event that is Art Basel, satellite fair Liste has made a name for itself spotting thenew and upcoming, featuring galleries from around the world who bring with them a host of exciting young andmid-career artists. Elephant gives an approvingly loud trumpet to the following.

The Sunday Painter, London

Peckham’s The Sunday Painter like to cause a rumble at fairs–last year’s showing of Samara Scott’s Lonely Planet II at FriezeLondon gathered more column inches than most–with their punchy but economical group of signed artists. The gallery have boughtBritish artist Alex Rathbone to Liste for a solo booth, showing a selection of signature appealing-yet-reppelent paintings and house-like colourful wooden sculptures in their angular booth. Navigating this space is tricky business which perfectly suits the nutty, andat times enjoyably ramshackle, nature of Rathbone’s work.

Arcadia Missa, London

Another Peckham space, Arcadia Missa are exhibiting pieces by Jesse Darling and Phoebe Collings-James which communicate wellwith the adjoining KAYA works at Deborah Schamoni. Collings-James’s wall-hung works are large and graphic, lining one side of thespace and offering a grounding for Darling’s sculptures, which are both beautiful–employing the unexpected visual delights of pinkexpanding foam–and grotesque; the vomming face that hides around the back of one work comes to mind especially.

VI, VII, Oslo

Oslo’s VI, VII cover a large area at the fair, showing Mikael Brkic and Kulisek / Lieske. Kulisek / Lieske are showing photographs thatwere created for fictional fashion magazine 299 792 458 m / s, which is ‘loosely modelled after Sibylle–the only fashion andphotography magazine operating in the former communist German Democratic Republic.’ Brkic’s works examine the uses oftechnology through time, and also take their cue from the fashion industry, the artist influenced by his work for an online retailer.

Marcelle Alix, Paris

Parisian gallery Marcelle Alix are hosted in one of the more unusual corners of the building; imagine a UFO built in the 60s. Theircircular space hovers above one of the large rooms, backing onto a plant-covered wall. Through the small room’s many glass windowsfloating body parts in pastel tones call appealingly; some, such as Charlotte Moth’s bronze-cast hands, offering a realistic renderingof their human origin, others, such as Jean-Charles de Quillacq’s white-washed Pistorius-san, leaving a (little) more to theimagination.

Office Baroque, Brussels

Colour rules at Office Baroque’s booth, with a powerful line of paintings from German artist Anke Weyer. In the busy room Weyer’soil and acrylic works call above the noise. Each piece is loaded with the artist’s bold marks, which swing between vibrant and splashy, heavy and dark.

Limoncello, London

You can’t go wrong with an Yves Kelin(ish) carpet, and the floor covering Limoncello’s asymmetric space offsets well the fun, colourful work of Cornelia Baltes, showing solo for Liste. Some of Baltes’s works sit at angles to one another on the floor while othersare wall hung. Occasional recognisable forms take shape in the works, which at their best offer a maniacal but humorous view of thehuman face or body; a particularly enjoyable work on the floor depicts a freaky grin, formed only from a big wide smile and twosplashy dots for eyes.

Young London: 2016 PicksText by Emily Steer

We asked a few of our London-based chums for their most exciting up-and-comers, all of whom will be havingtheir first solo exhibitions at these five galleries in 2016. Hailing from as far afield as Australia, Los Angeles and…Middlesex, these names are worth keeping an eye on. If you’re lucky enough to live in London (not merely foryour wonderfully close proximity to team Elephant) look no further.

Josh Lilley

The central London space will be showing their first solo exhibition of Kathleen Ryan’s work in May. The Californian artist graduatedfrom UCLA in 2014–appearing in a group show, Control Lapse at Josh Lilley that year–and has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles,as well as a nice spot at Frieze London’s sculpture park in October 2015. Her sculptural work is already incredibly distinguishable, often taking a playful look at the expectations of material; employing a limited, natural colour palette with the odd splash of colour, and materials such as concrete, marble and epoxy putty. These are commanding works that combine the gutsy nature of sculpture’smore traditional past, with a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

Showing in May 2016, full details TBA. Read more about Kathleen Ryan at joshlilleygallery.com

Alex Rathbone at The Sunday Painter

Home to a modest but precisely picked selection of young artists, Peckham’s The Sunday Painter had a pretty smashing 2015, toppedwith a well-publicised solo booth of the consistently magnificent Samara Scott at London’s Frieze. This February, Alex Rathbonereturns for his first solo exhibition at the gallery (he held a studio at the space a few years back), having completed his MFA atGlasgow School of Art last year.

‘Rathbone’s willingness to embrace a vernacular distinct from the realms of the conventional languages of contemporary art isdemonstrated throughout his practice. Clay facsimiles, ancient pastiche, clip art come together to hint at an alternate reality. In thisenvironment degradation and decay take hold, albeit artificially and clinically, ensuring we don’t depart too far from the actuality—that we have slipped into the fabric of a multi-levelled real life video game scenario.’ The Sunday Painter

Showing in February 2016, full details TBA. thesundaypainter.co.uk

Ry David Bradley at Evelyn Yard

The Australian artist Ry David Bradley comes to London in late March for his first UK solo show, at W1’s Evelyn Yard. Bradley’spractice explores the relationship between paintings and images—specifically those that have been sourced from the web. These web-born, landscape images, are edited by the artist on Photoshop, before they are printed onto synthetic suede and stretched as atraditional canvas might be. Bradley often mixes these works with a wider installation, last year displaying them behind a silver, metal fence–at Milan’s Brand New Gallery and Kansas City’s Bill Brady Gallery–a move described by the artist as being ‘inherentlypolitical’.

Showing in March 2016, full details TBA. Read more about Ry David Bradley at evelynyard.com

Martine Poppe at Kristin Hjellegjerde

The Wandsworth gallery Kristin Hjellegjerde represents a mix of rising and established artists—often focusing on powerfullycoloured, painterly works, that have an underlying political subject matter. Martine Poppe will be showing a solo exhibition at thegallery in April.
