Prof. Magdy Abou Rayan

President of Water Technology Association

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the Twelfth International Water Technology Conference. This conference has already established itself as a key event in which the most influential researchers in the different Water-related fields and regulators from related govenmental bodies and firms can come together to exchange insights and to influence each others' agendas.

Such a dialogue has never been more important. We live in a world in which water resources are being depleted rapidly and in an increasingly threatening form. Over the past few years, the problem is manifested in the shortage & contaimnation of available water resources, and incombatible reuse of wastewater resources.

The value of this conference lies in the opportunity it provides for an in-depth dialogue between regulators and the industry. It will provide opportunities for water quality professionals engaged in research, extension, and education to share knowledge and ideas, to identify and update emerging issues, and to network with related partner organizations.

• Invited speakers will address current and future water resource management issues

• Concurrent technical sessions will highlight results of research and educational programs

• Poster sessions and receptions will provide informal networking opportunities

I would like to see much more of this kind of collaboration. This is an opportunity for us all to come up with a sufficient vision of our current needs & future demend of water management technologies in the Arab region & the world. It is our work which will ultimately impact regulated firms. So, it is your chance to influence, Please sieze the opportunity to the full.

I would like to extend my warmest regards to every guest, participant, and observer joining our conference, hoping that it will be successful and fruitful.

lexandria, the largest port in Egypt and one of the major summer resorts on the Mediterranean sea and lies in the North West of the Nile Delta 225 km from Cairo. Two deep-Water Harbors make it

one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean and it is the center of the Egyptian fishing and Cotton Industries. It is outstanding location. All Year round mild climate fine sandy beaches stretching over 40 km.

Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great, who ordered the foundation of the city in 332 B.C on the site of a small village, called Rakoda in order to connect Egypt with his fatherland. He charged his architect Democrats with the planning of the new city immortalized his name along history.

After the death of Alexander the Great, his general Ptolemy declared himself King of Egypt and founded the ptolemaic dynasty which ruled Egypt for three centuries. During this period, Alexandria was the capital of Egypt for nearly a thousand years. Few cities in the world can vie with its glorious past but the majority certainly has more to show. Virtually nothing remains of the marble places and temples for which the city was renowned antiquity. The Hellenic past has been completely submerged and today the city’s aspect is entirely modern. The sea front with its railings and open-ended squares is reminiscent, although many of the buildings away from the front retain an Egyptian integrity, it is not coincidental that many of the European communities choose Alexandria for their residences. Climate

In March, mean temperature has a minimum of 15°C, and a maximum of 25°C. Hotel Palestine has a private beach and water temperature is reasonable for sea bathes. In the area, there is a water sports club, including sailing, launching and diving.

Historical Brief of Alexandria Alexandria is a city to explore at random, it’s as important to enjoy the atmosphere, as it is to see the “sights”. The city center now stretches back from Midan Saad Zaghloul, on the seafront, where there is a statue of the nationalist leader. This was formerly the site of the Caesareum, a magnificent temple begun by Cleopatra for her lover Antony and subsequently completed by their enemy Octavian and dedicated to himself. Two famous obelisks (one, known as “Cleopatra’s Needle”, now on the Embankment in London, the other in New York’s Central Park) were once here but all traces of the temple have disappeared.

 Graeco - Roman Alexandria

Little of the greatest city of antiquity remains to be seen today - although an international project to rebuild the Alexandria Library, which once housed laboratories.

 The Roman Theatre

Over 30 years of excavation have uncovered many Roman remains including this well-preserved theatre with marble seats for up to 800 spectators, galleries and sections of mosaic-flooring. In Ptolemaic times this area was the Park of Pan, a pleasure garden surrounded by Roman villas and baths.

 The Graeco - Roman Museum

The collection, which covers the period from the 3rd century BC to the 7th century AD, is a fascinating record of a civilization in the process of change as religions merged and society evolved. In Alexandria, Graeco - Roman and Pharaonic religions mingled in the cult of Serapis; the shift from pagan religions to Christianity can also be seen in the exhibits which include mummies, Hellenistic statues, busts of Roman emperors, Tanagra figurines and early Christian antiquities.

 Islamic Alexandria

El-Gomruk and El-Anfushi are interesting neighborhoods to explore, for their souks and street life as well as Ottoman mosques and mashrabiya - decorated houses. The Mosque of Abu El-Abbas-Mursi, dedicated to the patron saint of Alexandria’s fishermen and sailors, this is the city’s biggest mosque.

Fort Qaitbey On the northern tip of the Eastern Harbor, sultan Qaitbey’s Fort is an

Alexandria landmark. The Fort is on the original site of Pharos, Alexandria’s

ancient lighthouse, built in 279 BC to a height of 125 meters and topped with a statue of Poseidon. Although Pharos was restored at various times it had finally crumbled by the time that the original Fort was built here, in the 1480s. Today, the Fort contains a mosque and the Naval Museum and provides wonderful views of the city and the Mediterranean.

 Montazah Palace and Gardens

Acres of formal gardens and a beautiful beach make Montazah the foremost city pleasure grounds. Montazah Palace, a grand structure built in a mixture of Turkish and Florentine styles, is now a state guesthouse. Pleasant afternoons can also be spent in Shallalat Gardens, include rockeries and an artificial pond, Nouzha Gardens, near Alexandria Zoo, and Antoniadis Gardens, where classical statuary is set among what were once the grounds of a Greek family.
