Our 3in1 Worship in the Park with the BapƟst and Methodist Churches is scheduled for 9 a.m., Sunday, August 25 th in Lathrop Park. Plan to bring your lawn chair and join us for a great Ɵme. And what a great opportunity to invite someone to come to worship with you! Besides the great Ɵme of worship together, we have food ,fun and fellowship aŌerwards. Please bring some “goodies” to share. Following our custom for the past few years, we will just have one worship service over Labor Day Weekend – at 9 a.m., Sunday, September 1. Finally, I would like to invite you to join me for a one day retreat on Awe and the Sabbath Rhythm of Life, Monday, September 16, at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center in Oregon, IL. I realize that many of you will be at work or in school that day, but if you are able to come, please consider it. It is a beauƟful locaƟon and those who have aƩended these retreats in the past have found them very meaningful and enjoyable. Those who would like are welcome to stay overnight either Sunday or Monday night and enjoy astronomical observing with telescopes. Brochures about the retreat are out on the counter across from Ann’s oce. Please talk to me if you have any quesƟons. Pastor Bruce I hope you have had a good and (at least somewhat) relaxing summer so far. It’s hard to believe, but August is just around the corner and we have a lot going on at First Lutheran Church. On Saturday August 10, Randy and Carol Stubbs and their children, missionaries to Tanzania, will be with us and will help lead our 5 p.m. worship service. The Stubbs were from the DeKalb area unƟl they went to serve in Tanzania about 6 years ago. We are honored to support them as missionaries and are thrilled that they will be with us to help lead our worship. Please come to meet them! We will have our Contemporary worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday morning, August 11 th . We will also have our Lutheran Men in Mission pancake breakfast that morning. Yes, it is not only okay, but indeed a great idea to come both Saturday evening and Sunday morning that weekend! Again this year we have an opportunity to parƟcipate in a Community Worship Service as part of the Smallville Superfest. The service will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 18 th at the main stage of the fesƟval. This is a good opportunity for outreach to the community and a good Ɵme to worship with neighbors. Come out and take part in this worship. (We will have our regular services that weekend.) This television series covers the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and is extremely well done. Please be sure to sign out for this as you do our books. We thank Jayne & Steve Turner for this donation.

There are also two new novels displayed for our summer reading. “We Have This Moment” is written by Diann Hunt. The author of “Hallie’s Heart” is Shelly Beach.

Come Join Us on an “AWESOME ADVENTURE”

Sunday School to Begin Sept. 8th with Rally Day

We will be “flying on faith” as we begin the Sunday School year with Rally Day on Sunday, September 8th at 9:00 a.m. Please note that this is a different time than Sunday School is usually held, which is 9:30 a.m. each week after Rally Day. All Sunday School children, their parents and the entire congregation is invited to attend the exciting program to be held at the Methodist Church at 9:00 a.m. on this day. Following this program we will return to First Lutheran for donuts and juice. Come join us as “God Guides Us” on our “Awesome Adventure!”

Sunday School Teachers: Please join the adventure…

Sunday School teachers who plan to stay on are requested to please call (630/552-8625) or send Kathy Benoit an e-mail at [email protected]. Also, if you are not currently a Sunday teacher or helper and wish to help, please do the same. We are trying to configure the classrooms for next year and need a good idea on who is staying and who has prayed about helping our Sunday School and wants to JOIN THE ADVENTURE ! Thanks!

VBS Thank You Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make our VBS so successful this year! What a fantastic experience it was for our youth. Special thanks to Sarah Kuntzman and Austi Savitski and all the other people who helped coordinate the effort, donated and served snacks, helped the VBS staff and students, worked with middle and pre-school students, etc., etc.!

It takes a village to raise a child and we are certainly blessed with people who step up and help our children. Thanks a million!!

Student Information and Secret Pal Forms On the first day of Sunday School, we will send home student information and secret pal forms with each child. Parents and their child(ren) should complete these and return them the next Sunday. We would like to have up-to-date information on each family, in the event of an emergency. If your child has any allergies or special restrictions, it should be listed on this form. Information on these forms is also shared with adult secret pals, so they get to know their secret pal a little better.

Sunday School Donations We have been blessed with many dona-tions for Sunday School and we are in re-ally good shape with crayons and con-struction paper. Our Sunday School IS in need of scotch tape and markers, if any-one has some laying around. If you have any other new or gently used craft items you would like to donate, we would wel-come them with open arms (and hearts and hands!)

Adults Invited to Become a Secret Pal Adult members of the church are invited to become a Sunday School Secret Pal. The only requirement is that you would like to provide support and encouragement to a Sunday School child throughout the school year.

This encouragement may be in the form of anonymous notes, cards, little snacks or sur-prises. This should be a loving (not expen-sive) venture!

If you are interested in becoming a Secret Pal, please sign your name to the list at the back of the church or on the Sunday School door. We will assign you with the name and address of a Sunday School child and the rest is up to you.

Secret pals will reveal their names to the Sunday School children at the Sunday School Awards Program in May. This is a great way to share your love of the Lord with a child and help them realize how important they are in His eyes (and yours, too!)
