In 1967, when 10-year-old Mary refuses to go to school, she is arbitrary sent to a psychiatric hospital where mysticism is her only escape from the abuses.

More than 3 million reports of child maltreatment are received by state and local agencies each year—that is nearly 6 reports every minute. We are fighting for: - The Recognition of Emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) – Denouncing the arbitrary maltreatments, abuses and cruelty that have happened in mental institutions around the world. – Revealing THE TRUE STORY of an unlucky child struggling for survival in a horrific mental institution and a society having issues dealing with out-of-the-box personality.

Alice is based on a true story. When 10-year-old Marie refuses to cooperate with her distant parents, they take her to a psychiatrist. Out of resources, the psychiatrist and the mother decide to send her to a mental hospital, while the dad reprehends their decision. The nurse and the patients quickly abuse the little girl. In distress, Mary finds the strength to survive in connecting to a new spiritual world, opening greater perspectives.

The director and producers felt the need to tell this story to share this inspiring tale of survival. We wanted to make a spiritual movie that respected and included every belief to focus on the positive aspect of mysticism: it is a guide to help people reconnect with their inner strength. Alice has two goals: emphasize humanist treatments and inspire the audience discover a world of trust and faith.

Who is Alice? Alice is a secret character

Mary (Masha Malinina): An only child, she shows sign of emotional distress. She lacks love from her family and reacts badly to it. She is clever and artistic but also quiet and daredevil.

Character description: Caucasian, (10), small, slim, well educated and mannered, Mary is a very

clever and mature child that his driven by her survival instincts and her drive to get out of the mental hospital intact.

Mother (Alisa Schulz): Classic, stuck-up and traditional woman. She was born in a very conventional environment and carries tough and drastic values. Housewife.

Character description: Caucasian, (late 30’s), small, endomorph, old values, higher middle class, she is an

intellectual and insensitive lady. World War II and a difficult childhood had a strong effect on her.

Father (John C. Epperson): Engineer, he lives a regular, boring life where work represents a fair amount of his time spent outside the house. He has a sleek, distant relation with Alice and doesn’t have much in common with his wife.

Character description: Caucasian, (late 30’s), is a tall, high class, good looking, man. Father is an introvert and shy person.

Nurse (Metra Dee): She is a spinster, frustrated, low class woman that went through a tough life and suffers from loneliness as much as the patients.

Character description: African American, (30’s), bulky, heavy, low class and crude woman. She has no emotions and do her tasks like a robot, showing no

compassion until Mary’s tall touches her.

David (Jonathon Tyler Ford): He is a wild teen, picked up from the streets and has been at the hospital since then. He knows the hospital and all its secrets’ by heart.

Character description: Caucasian, (13), tall, skinny and schizophrenic. He has deep and intense phobias

and compulsive behaviors that create personality switches and scary behaviors.

Psychiatrist (Carryl Lynn): She became a psychiatrist because deep down she has a fascination for crazy minds, being also disturbed. She is very social, talking easily to people and being the center of attention.

Character description: Caucasian, mid 50’s, strong, determined, calm, suspicious and twisted. She

manipulates everybody and feels like the queen at the hospital. She is the clever mad ruling the madhouse.

Geoffroy Faugerolas

Geoffroy is an eclectic Director / Producer, in quest to bring the strongest and most meaningful stories. Geoffroy directed the cutting-edge short Alice, wrote and directed The Tsarevich with A-list actor Mark Moses and produced the short film Memoire starring A-lister Dean Winters. Geoffroy’s movies have been nominated in various film festivals across the United States. He has received news coverage for his work, including The Huffington Post, and has experience working on music videos for known

artist such as Pascal Obispo or Fun. Geoffroy has directed and produced more than a dozen shorts films. Educated around the world, Geoffroy grew up in France, studied at HEC Montréal in Business Administration, at the New York Film Academy for an Associate in Filmmaking and is graduating with a BFA from Pepperdine University in Media productions

Masha Malinina She was born in New York, where at four year old, she discovered her passion for acting. After a year of Acting classes and Audition/Commercial workshops, Masha was signed by Studio Talent Group in January 2013. Just in four months Masha did eight short films where she had 5 lead parts: Web series (pilot-lead part), Comedy Short series-Lead. Masha danced a lead part in three Nutcracker productions. Masha got a price in Disney

Land Show Stopper Regional Dance Championship.

Carryl Lynn

A New England native, currently based in Los Angeles, she appeared in features such as:

Kevin Smith’s “Red State” with Michael Parks and Melisa Leo, “Sirin in Love” with Nazanin Boniadi, Riley Smith, and Amy Madigan, “Swerve” with John Diehl, Beth Grant, and Janelle Giumarra, “Touched” with Shirly Brener and Holliston Coleman and many other independent features.

Carryl has appeared on TV shows including: “NCIS,” “Desperate Housewives,” “True Blood.” She has an extensive theatre experience in Cape Cod, MA including original cast for Gip Hoppe’s “Jackie, An American Life,” which went on to Broadway and London stages.

Metra Dee

From Houston, Texas, she came to Los Angeles to pursue her dream career in acting. She starred in numerous movies that have been selected and screened including The Trillion Dollar Baby and Change. Metra also participated in the movie ‘Leave it on the Floor’, which has been widely released.

John C. Epperson – Father

Born in Vallejo, California, John graduated from the American Conservatory Theater's MFA program, as well as the Solano College's Actor Training Program.

He then traveled to China and performed there for four years as the action hero "McCabe" in the world's largest live action stunt show "Danger Island". In 2011 John returned to the USA, and relocated to Los Angeles where

he can be seen as "The Mariner" in Universal Studios Hollywood's Live Action Water World show.

Alisa Schulz Born in Racine, Wisconsin, she became an international Model, traveling all over the world: London, Paris, Milan, Germany, Australia, Africa & throughout the US. She discovered her acting talents in New York, studying Meisner’s techniques. She went on to study at the William Esper studio with Joel Rooks and Maggie Flanigan.

Jonathon Tyler Ford

Fifteen-year-old Jonathon Tyler Ford is based in Los Angeles, developing his acting’s skills. He played in two commercials: ‘Ubisoft/Avengers’ and ‘France 2’, taking principal roles. Since then, Jonathon acted in five movies in leading and supporting roles. Jonathon also took a part in ten theatrical shows.

Marie-Ange Faugérolas – Screenwriter

Marie-Ange Faugérolas is the writer of twelve successful published novels and non-fiction books. Some of her high standard books are on the shelves in libraries of the most famous American universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Brown, and Yale. She wrote the script for the short film Alice and is now currently writing the screenplay for the feature film.

A mother of five, Marie-Ange Faugérolas has taught for seven years and excelled as an executive director for inter-companies trainings for four years.

Her prosperous imagination leads her to write powerful and touching stories with a spiritual perspective.

Alena Burova – Producer

Alena Burova is a film producer based in Los Angeles.

She recently produced Alice, The Tsarevich starring Mark Moses and Memoire starring Dean Winters.

She graduated from the University of Westminster in Contemporary Media Practice Course with a B.A (hons) in London, United Kingdom. She also completed an accelerated and intensive One Year Certificate in Film and TV production in Los Angeles.

Alena is a distinctive producer that has the business skills to successfully manage a production to completion, financially and budgetary.

Matt Milan – Music Composer

Matt Milan’s compositions have been in countless successful films across film festivals around the world. His unique compositions are the signature of a distinguishable and inventive talent.

When he was young, he studied Opera singing at the conservatory, “Alfred de Vigny”, in Paris, France for a few years.

Not too long after, he went to the International Conservatory of Music in Paris, where he still practiced classical singing and started piano and

musical theory lessons. He stayed several years until he decided to move to the Russian conservatory “Rachmaninov”, to pursue the same field in which he received a degree in classical singing, piano and musical theory.

In parallel to these studies, Matt Milan started composing several pieces of music including classical and pop songs for singers. With these experiences, he was able to expand his repertoire from music to film.

Jack Elliott – Director of Photography

Jack Elliott was born in Texas and grew up between Colorado and Iowa. At age 7 he got his first camera, a Leica R4, from his father Jeff Elliott also a photographer whose works were featured in publications such as ELLE magazine and galleries across the US and Europe. At age 16 he enrolled at the university to study photography for two years before going to the UAE to study cinematography. His works include short, feature and documentary films as well as music videos for MTV Arabia and MTV Europe traveling to Uganda, Dubai, Algeria and China to shoot before moving

back to the US where he is currently based. The feature films he shot have screened in festivals such as Seattle International Film Festival and Goteborg International Film Festival among other festivals.

- What were your intentions in ‘Alice ’?

Alice mixes two topics that are dear to my heart: social issues and spirituality.

The movie aims to bring hope to the audience. My goal was to put the viewer in the little girl's shoes so that they experience what the victims of abuses have to live through. Involved in the movie, the public has a voice, provoking a call for action. It was important for me to make a movie for a very broad audience: Alice's message can resonate with any beliefs and is intended to guide people through the discovery of their own strength. The mysticism of Alice really represents my curiosity for the different aspects of life that make our Human condition: rationality versus spirituality.

Regarding the social issues expressed in Alice and the psychiatric abuses, I sensed a responsibility as a filmmaker to tell the errors of our past so that the mistakes are not repeated. I needed to tell the story in a controversial and rough way while showing the raw reality to help people understand the harsh living conditions of mental institutions.

- To whom the story belongs and what did inspire you in making ‘Alice?

The story is based on my mother's childhood and I wanted to share her inspiring tale of survival to encourage other people.

Since the beginning of pre-production, Alice kept provoking strong emotional reactions that reassured us with the power of our story and the message we had to deliver. The support that we received from everywhere showed us that we were on the right path.

It was very inspiring to make Alice because I wanted to show a new perspective of spirituality and how it can guide people to find their inner strength for their self-realization, as I where discovering mine.

- Do you plan to develop Alice in a feature?

The short film is just a small portion of the entire story. We have so much more to tell and the script is already in development. Freeing itself from conventions, the feature intends to go over boundaries to deliver an incredible story, full of suspense, mystery and horror that will depict a mix of beliefs, virtues and morals.

- Why did you choose this particular visual look in ‘Alice ’?

Alice is inspired by the Chiaroscuro, neo noir and the new Hollywood. Each character has his own color palette and various art styles are mixed together to create a very specific effect: the idea was to show two worlds opposing each other. Many dualities, symbol of the world balance are represented in Alice through set design, music, wardrobe, and lighting. As the little girl goes down to the hell of psychiatric hospital, the world around her changes accordingly.

- What does the spiritual aspect of ‘Alice ’ represent to you?

I wanted to embrace everybody’s beliefs to help people, as spirituality helped my mother. As the little girl connects to what she perceives and understands of spirituality, she develops a feeling of trust and faith that allows her to survive in the asylum. I nurture this feeling, using it as a guide to develop myself and to help the people around me to make the world a better place.

- What was artistically your best moment during the shoot?

Certain moments were very difficult to shoot and the ambiance on set was very heavy. When we shot the scene where the little girl discovers her spirituality, it was a beautiful moment where tension and heaviness was relieved from people shoulders. I felt the presence of a transcending energy that was bringing light in our heart and changed the atmosphere of the location. The crew and actors were doing their best to embrace this ambiance and it made the scene so pure, it went beyond our expectations.

- Special thanks?

I have a special thank for my mother who shared her difficult story and had to open herself to the world. Alice is a family project and I need to thank everybody who contributed to support us included my brothers and sisters, my friends and colleagues. This project would have never seen the light without the persistence of Alena Burova, the producer and originator of the film. She pushed me to better the movie and myself.
