A Snapshot of the ChristianTeaching & Talk Radio Listener Dr. Gary Crossland Have you ever wondered who the average Teaching and Talk radio listener is? To be honest, there is no such thing as an archetypal Teaching and Talk listener, since this format broadcasts across a number of qualitative groups. The chart on the right will provide you with a thumbnail sketch of the demographics of the Teaching and Talk radio audience, including their rank among secular radio formats, and how it compares to both frequent newspaper readers and adults in general. Advertisers are highly encouraged to keep an eye on the qualitative properties of any media group under consideration. In fact, more important than how many listeners a station has is what kind of listeners it attracts. After all, when it comes to media audiences, size isn’t everything. In today’s economy, quality is king.

Christian Radio Audience at a Glance

Fundamental Differences Between Christian Radio and Other Formats

According to Instant Demographics and Soma Communications, there are three fundamental differences between Christian Radio and Other Formats:

1. Background vs. Foreground Media 2. Information Media 3. The Halo Effect

Background vs. Foreground Media: Christian Radio is Foreground Media, whereas other radio formats are considered background media. “There are only three radio formats that tend to not be relegated to the background - talk, sports and Christian radio. That’s because these are fundmentally information media. There is something that feels “safe” about advertising on a radio station where the listeners are really listening - not just hearing.”

Information Media: “Whether Christian Stations are talking or playing music, their listeners are always in a state of high alert, and this is a phenomenon that secular stations cannot equal.”

Halo Effect: “Christian radio listeners transfer their allegiance from the station to its advertisers and sponsors.”

- Dr. Gary Crossland of Instant Demographics, Summer 2009 (and Soma Communications).

Christian Radio Audience at a Glance

According to Barna Group, slightly more than half of the nation’s adults said they had tuned in to a Christian radio program of some type during the past month.

The most prolific Christian programming is teaching, preaching and talk shows. Just less than four out of ten adults (38%) had tuned in to hear such programming during the previous month.

When both Christian music and Christian talk radio formats are combined, all Christian radio programming reached 52% of the nation’s adults in the prior month. That translates into 109 million adults exposed to Christian radio content.

According to National Religious Broadcasters: “Nearly Half of all Americans are Tuning into Christian Radio” due to the ever growing demand for family safe entertainment.

ALIVE Format: “A Program Line-Up”

Christian radio credits a large portion ofits present income to religious non-profitorganizations. The fact is that, in almostevery case, churches constitute theheaviest generic category of advertiserson Christian radio. But some churcheswould rather put their promotional dollarsto work somewhere else. Here are a fewof their reasons. More will follow nextweek in Part 2.

"We don't believe in self-promotion."All churches advertise whether they callit that or not. All word-of-mouth, flyerson the supermarket bulletin board andeven the sign out in front of the church isadvertising. Furthermore, the church isobviously paying some amount of moneyfor these projects. Radio is nothing morethan an electronic extension of what thechurch is already doing to promote itself.Obviously, every congregation thinks thatthey have the best church in town. Andno one attending church A would invitepeople to go to church B. Church radioadvertising has become nothing morethan word-of-mouth en mass. In myopinion, radio audiences need to be moreaware of local ministries they can pluginto more than national ministries withwhich their involvement is limited.People cannot grow if they don't haveroots. By purchasing program or spottime on a local Christian station, localministries are addressing the greatestneed in their community - personalinvolvement with other believersencouraging local fellowship.

"We would rather evangelize onsecular radio."Let's not think for a moment that theChristian radio listener is without theneed for evangelization. While it is truethat Christian radio plays to one of themost quality audiences in America, ourresearch involving every primary databank in the country conclusively provesto us that there are those in the Christianradio audience who, in many ways, change the spiritual profile of the entirecomposite. A general manager of oneof America's premier Christian stationsrecently told us that a local survey of hislisteners revealed that between 19-21%were yet unregenerate. Even more werewithout a church home. If we forgetthese aspects of our audience, we willlose sight of the tremendous missionaryplatform from which to address ourlocal communities. No longer isChristian radio just serving to bless thebody of Christ; nor is it just a mediumof Christian entertainment. There is nodoubt that a large segment of theChristian radio audience constitutes oneof America's ripest harvests. It is to thissegment of the audience that ministriesneed to address on Christian radio. For

some reason, Christian radio has becomeincreasingly popular as a format thatplays to either those who aren't yet savedor who aren't living like it. Localministries need to promote themselves asa place for these souls to take root.

"We use newspaper."All the more reason to do radio as well.Any agency in America will tell you thatradio is the best support medium for printavailable. According to RadioAdvertising Bureau, the average adult(25-54) devotes only 11% of his/hermedia attention to newspaper, comparedto 41% given to radio. Only 41% ofnewspaper readers recall seeing anysingle full-page ad. 33% note half-pageads and 27% note quarter page ads. Thismeans that a client could decrease hisfull-page ad space cost in half while onlyreducing his notations by 25%. Then, byadding radio to the mix, his bottom lineresults would go up. Remember - printsupplies the copy, but radio supplies thesizzle, the sound, the emotions, thereinforcement. Print plus radio willbring more results than just print alone. This type of cross-media promotion is amuch more effective way to advertise.

Why Churches Should Advertise on Christian Radio

Why Churches Should Advertise on Christian Radio

This is part two in a short series that I have written about church advertising. In this article I continue with the final three concerns that churches often have when considering the notion of advertising on a local Christian radio station.

"We tried radio, but no one ever filled in the visitor card saying that they came as a result of radio." Radio will seldom be the primary reason why someone visits your church. The most-common reason will be word-of-mouth. Other important factors include location, the sign out front, print, or any intrusive medium. Radio, however will make all of these work better. Your radio spots may end up being the most-recent impression on the visitor's mind, giving him his final reason to visit. If your church distributes visitor cards that ask, “How did you hear about us?” do not to expect the “radio” box to give you an accurate reading regarding the power of this media. The reason - very few people hear about a church from the radio first. They may be sold on visiting, but they are seldom introduced to a church in this manner. What the church should ask is, "Are you aware of our advertisements in the yellow pages, newspaper, radio, etc.?" This question will give the church the information that they seek. It is altogether obvious that if a visitor has been reached by the church's ads, they have been influenced by those ads. The old saying is, "What gets your attention gets you." Constant repetitious exposure to a church's campaign cannot help but to

have an effect. When a client tells me, "No one ever joined our church because of radio," my question is this, "During your campaign, did your attendance go up? If so, there is no doubt in my mind that radio can take at least partial credit. If there is a positive correlation between their radio campaign and their growth, radio shares in the victory.

"We just advertise special events." This is fine, but don't try to build a church on this type of advertising. Let's face it - an evangelist or music group is just like a visitor. When you invite visitors to come see a visitor, they will leave as soon as he does. In other words, these special visitors have become nothing more than an audience, and not a serious prospect for the church. This should not be surprising since these ads draw people on the pretense of being a spectator rather than a potential church member. Consequently, unlike most visitors, they generally come with the intention of leaving. The unfortunate aspect of advertising special events is that the most important thing about church temporarily becomes the evangelist, the musician, or whatever. In reality, you end up doing more advertising for your guest speaker than you do for yourself. When the object of the ad is gone, so is the reason for your visitor to stay. To build up real church growth, the church should do a long-term image-awarenesscampaign, emphasizing the major features that are permanent - the pastor, the church itself, etc. Here is the rule. Advertise temporary events and the reason that a visitor comes is the same reason that he will leave. If you advertise those things that are permanent, the reason that your visitor visits will also be the reason that he stays.

"We don't want to proselytize." It is next to impossible to pull anyone from a church where his or her spiritual needs are being met. You may, in fact,

draw some away from a situation to which they should not belong. If they are not being spiritually fed at their present church, you should not have a problem with them visiting your church. Secondly, if people do visit your church as a result of your ad, most of the time it is because they are searching anyway. Your spot will never draw anyone that is justifiably happy with their present situation. In fact, after writing over 1000 church spots, serving as a church promotion consultant for a major Christian station, I have seldom witnessed this problem. From a financial standpoint, the best way to justify purchasing airtime on a Christian station is to determine the per capita income of your market. Knowing the number of families that you have in your church should tell you what percentage of their average income ends up in the offering plate. This will then tell you how many families have to be acquired from any campaign in order to break even on your advertising investment. In more cases than not, I have discovered that the benefits derived from advertising more than compensate for any outlay of funds.
