Alkaline Earth Metals
Alkaline Earth Metal Elements
Elements Continued
Similar Properties
• All In the second row• Don’t occur as free
elements• Most commonly are
found occurring as the carbonates, phosphates silicates, and sulfates
• Flame test can be used to determine if the element is an Alkaline Metal
• Atoms loose 2 electrons
• Most are insoluble or slightly soluble
• Very Reactive
Chemical Properties
• All but Beryllium form oxides at room temperature
• Magnesium reduces carbon dioxide
• Strontium, Calcium, barium when put in water react to form hydroxides
Physical Properties
• Have higher melting points, are harder and are more dense than Potassium and Sodium
• When put in flame:– Mg:White
– Ca:Dark red
– Sr: Crimson
– Ba: light green
• 2 valence electrons • Metallic and Ductile• Shiny silvery white• Malleable
Natural Occurrences
• Found in earth’s crust• Rock Structures• Magnesium is found in Carmelite, magnetite and
dolomite. Extracted from sea water • Calcium is found in found in chalk, limestone,
gypsum and anhydrite
Uses- Strontium
• Fireworks• Flares• To create a crimson
Color
Uses- Radium
• Treating Cancer
Uses- Barium
• Medical Applications• Glass making• Rat poison• Making Rubber
Magnesium- Uses
• Airplanes• Missiles• Flares• Bombs• Car Engines• Medicine• Computers
Calcium- Uses
• Builds Strong bones and teeth
• Used in Milk• Used to make plaster
Beryllium- Uses
• Spacecraft • Aircraft• Missiles• X-rays
