Page 2: All About Happy Hour

Just hearing or seeing the word Happy Hour makes one happy. But have you ever thought where it all started?

Page 3: All About Happy Hour

Even before it became a marketing gimmick to boost sales during slow or low peak hours, it was used by the American Navy during the 1920s. It was the slang to describe an allotted period of time on the ship where the sailors could unwind and engage in various forms of entertainment such as wresting and other physical activities while getting slightly intoxicated. This is also made to battle the monotonies of seafaring.

Also during this time, the U.S. government imposed a strict prohibition of intoxicating drinks with the Volstead Act. But instead of abiding to the law, Americans became even more alcoholic and would even organize secret meetings or gatherings before dinner to share a few drinks. The slang “Happy Hour” was then used to describe and hide these outlawed meet-ups.

Even after the abolishment of the prohibition, the term happy hour stayed and was later on used by several establishments to promote their specials. But not all states in the United States were allowed to have happy hours. States such Massachusetts, Illinois, and North Carolina are some of the states that ban happy hour. Though reasons vary, most include safety (especially road safety to prevent driving under influence) and health reasons. On the other side, there are also states that encourage it such as Pennsylvania where the happy hour was extended from two hours to four hours while Kansas opened to the idea of happy hour after over two decades of it being banned.

Now to the present, Happy Hour is a very common marketing practice. You would often see it in several pubs (except in those states where it is banned) not just in the United States but all over the world. It has been a routine of many workers to drop by their favorite pub after work to unwind and chat with colleagues or friends. It has even evolved to happy hour inside your own office.

The in-office happy hour is practiced by several modern companies where employees have drinking liberty. This reinforces the idea that these companies believe that their employees are capable of making responsible decisions. This then creates an attractive autonomous work environment that most talents seek.
