• Long arm Quilting Rulers, sometimes called templates, should always be ¼ inch thick plastic.
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates

• Handi Quilter Rulers are created for use with any mid-arm or long arm quilting machine.
• Handi Quilter Rulers can be used with the Sweet Sixteen Sit-down machine.

HQ Fusion and HQ Sixteen require a rounded ruler base
• How to install the ruler base
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
Avante ruler base is square
• Keep your ruler flat so that it does not slip over the hopping foot.
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• Rulers can chip or crack if the needles strikes them. • The timing of the machine could be thrown off if the needle strikes the
ruler which would require a service repair.
• The hopping foot rides along the edge of the ruler to create precise arcs, straight lines, and shapes.

Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• The ruler base adds width to the machine bed.
• To prevent the machine or ruler base from running into the side clamps, consider a wider backing.
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• Trick: If there is not enough backing fabric add an extension to your clamp with twill tape.
• This eliminates the ruler base from bumping into the clamps.

Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• Ruler work is not a fast process.
• It is steady and accurate.
• The rewards of perfectly straight or curved stitched lines are worth it.
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• When doing Stitch-
in-the-Ditch, set the stitch length to 12-14 SPI.
• This helps the stitches bury in the seams.
14 SPI
10 SPI
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• Use light weight thread such as a 50 or 60 wt. cotton, poly or silk.
• Using monofilament thread helps hide the stitches when there is a high contrast of fabric colors.
Tips for Long Arm Quilting Rulers and Templates
• Long Arm Quilting Rulers can be used on any side of the hopping foot.

• Circles and Half Circles
Ruler lines on the lower half of the template provide guidelines when quilting half-circles or arcs. The angled lines help when aligning the circle into the corner of blocks.

• Circles and Half Circles
TIP: When quilting around a circle template, gentle pressure needs to be applied at the four points indicated. These four points indicate where the machine changes directions (from vertical to horizontal and back). By pushing inward with the hopping foot, successfully completing the circle correctly is ensured. Think of the hours on the clock. Pay special attention to 2:30, 4:30, 7:30, and 10:30.
