This rivalry is a good metaphor for the independence movement.
This autumn, the people of Scotland will vote on whether the
nation should become an independent country. This vote will take
place on Thursday 18 September 2014.
The question to be asked in the referendum will be
"Should Scotland be an independent country?"
What about Independence?
After many years of fighting with England, its larger aggressive neighbour, the origins of The United Kingdom and Ireland may be surprising.
The Union of the Crowns was the accession of James VI, King of Scots, to the thrones of England and Ireland, and the consequential unification for some purposes of the three realms under a single monarch, in March 1603.
1707 A century later, the flow of trade brought the English and Scottish parliaments together under the 1707 Act of Union - creating the new state of Great Britain.
What are the origins?
There is a lot of debate as to why there should be a vote, with many no campaigners claiming that because Scotland is in Europe the reasons are not very important whereas the yes campaigners are claiming that a yes vote will lead to a fairer political balance.
So why?
For the more romantically-minded, this year is also the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, which saw the English army defeated by the forces of King of Scots Robert the Bruce, during the wars of independence.
What about Independence?
What are the numbers?
