Long time member of Thunderbird Midwest and the VTCI, Jerry Petersen, lost his last battle on 11/16/2006. Jerry, and his wife Helen, showed their Senior car, a beautiful ‘65 Landau, at many VTCI conventions. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Colorado Spring, Colorado for the VTCI International Conven-tion! Hosted by Rocky Mountain Thunderbird Club. More info as it becomes available.

 March/April 2007

Spring is just around the corner and it’s time to pull off the car cover, polish the chrome and head to Atlanta for the 2007 VTCI Southeast Regional to be held May 3rd through 6th. “Southern Nights,

City Lights” is the North Georgia Thunderbird Club’s theme for this ac-tion packed weekend. A Southern Style Bar-B-Q, DJ and a chance to dust off your dancing shoes as well as a Swap Meet are just the beginning of what we have in store for you.

The 2007 VTCI Southeast Regional will once again be hosted by The At-lanta Marriott Northwest Hotel. Our 1992 Southeast Regional was held here and there is plenty of separate parking for Thunderbirds and trailers and the security is exceptional. The convenient location of this hotel will allow ample opportunity to visit many of our superb attractions.

The Atlanta Marriott Northwest Hotel has a special block of rooms avail-able to all of us. The rate is $89. To ensure you receive that rate, please call the hotel directly at 770) 952-7900 and request the T-Bird Rate.

You thought Atlanta was landlocked? On Friday, enjoy a tour of the Geor-gia Aquarium! The world’s largest aquarium with 8 million gallons of fresh and marine water and more than 100,000 animals from around the globe, you’re sure to see things you’ve never seen before. We will leave the hotel at 9:00 am and return at 1:00 pm. Lunch may be purchased at the Aquarium. Tickets are $25 and are non-refundable.

The Dogwood trees and azaleas will be in bloom and there is no better time to visit Atlanta than in the Spring. As an added feature to our Re-gional, The North Georgia Thunderbird Club is providing a chance to win $10,000 to each family registration. We look forward to seeing you at the 2007 VTCI Southeast Regional.

The VTCI will host its 2007 NE Re-gional Meet next May 4th & 5th at the Freehold Gardens Hotel & Conven-tion Center located in Freehold, NJ at Route 537 West & Gibson Place. The Hotel located conveniently just minutes from downtown Freehold and accessible from several major Highways, including Route 9 & High-way 33.

This is a comeback meet in the NE for the VTCI, so the club really needs the support of the membership to have a successful meet. I’m sure the mem-bership in the NE Region is hungry for a meet as well. Let me tell you a little about what we have planned...

First I want to say that you don’t need a 300-point Show Car to partici-pate at a VTCI meet. There’s plenty of fun to be had no matter how nice your car is, that’s why the VTCI has so many classes to enter your car in and I’m hoping to have a wide assort-ment of all types.

I decided to make this a two-day event due to everyone’s busy sched-ules and available time, including my own. However, if you decide to come early before the meet, there’s plenty to do. Six Flags Great Adventure & Theme Parks is just a short ride away and the Jackson Outlets are just down the road from Great Adventure.

Friday May 4th gets it all started with an All-Day Bus/Van Trip to Atlantic City. The nice thing about this is that you can do whatever you want. We will drive you down from the host ho-tel and drop you off and pick you up at a Central Location to come back.

Walk the famous Atlantic City Board-walk, visit the Casinos and hotels and shops in the area. The bus will leave the hotel at 8 am and leave Atlantic City by 4 pm.

I’ll share a little Atlantic City secret with you... There’s still an Old Time Italian restaurant from the Glory Days of Atlantic City. It’s called Angelo’s Fairmont Tavern, it’s very close to the new Atlantic City Convention Center. This place goes back to the days of the famous 500 Club, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis & Sinatra & Co. Stop there for lunch if you make the trip. Yes, I’ve eaten there once or twice.

When we get back from Atlantic City, we will have a casual New York Deli dinner gathering at the hotel. All you can eat, deli meats, cheeses, salad & rolls. This is a good way to meet and socialize with other club members.

Saturday will be the VTCI NE Regional Show and Judging. Wake up early and get those Birds ready for the show. I would like to assemble the judg-ing team before the meet, so anyone that wants to judge, please contact me in advance. Saturday evening will be the Awards Dinner. Sunday morn-ing we all go home.

I selected an early regional, because I wanted to offer the members some-thing early on in the show season, before the decision of picking and choosing became too cluttered and also before the weather became too hot in NJ. Come out and have a fun time and support the VTCI. Hope to see you there! Jim Cappuzzo

The Wunderbirds would like to invite one and all to our beautiful, balmy San Diego on May 10-12, 2007. We en-joy one of America’s most temperate climates and fascinating cities. “Soft breezes gently swaying the palms” is reality here where the Coronado bridge arcs gracefully across the bay to it’s namesake island and the Point Loma lighthouse keeps watch.

We will be offering days of sun-filled fun, relaxation and, of course, Thun-derbirds. Beginning with the hotel, rooms have been set aside for our group at the Holiday Inn in Mission Valley. Refer to “Wunderbirds” when making reservations to get the room rate of $109.00. To ensure that a room is available at this special rate, please call and reserve by May 1, 2007.

Friday we have arranged a van to transport you to your choice between three of San Diego’s most interesting destinations.

1. You can arrive at Balboa Park. There you will find a plethora of activities:

San Diego’s renowned zoo including it’s signature pandas!

The parks many fascinating museums, from the interactive Ruben H. Fleet Space Museum/Imax theatre to museums dedicated to photographic arts, aero-space, automobiles, railroads, anthropol-ogy, natural history and fine arts.

Or you may choose to roam the park and see it’s abundant flora; from the arboretum with it’s lotus-filled entry pond to the Alcazar formal garden; from sparkling fountains to the pictur-esque bridges throughout the park.

Admissions vary for the individual ven-ues and some are free!

2. The van will stop at the USS Midway. Full of peace-time as well as war-time history, you will find knowledgeable attendants throughout as you stroll through this huge aircraft carrier. You will probably also run into seamen that served on the Midway and have won-derful stories to tell.

3. A stop at Seaport Village is your fi-nal option. Here you will find many unique shops and restaurants right by the water’s edge. You will find a lovely walk along the coast here and a pleas-ant, relaxing day.

Even the requisite raffle at the Sat-urday night banquet will be an event in itself with special offerings includ-ing a three-night stay at a cabin in the mountains near Idyllwild, an hour’s flight in a member’s plane and custom made Thunderbird jewelry from our resident designer.

For those that may be able to come in early or who may like to stay Sunday to see the sights, San Diego offers a cornucopia of destinations. You may want to visit Sea World, Horton Plaza shopping mall, The Gas Lamp District of shopping and elegant dining, Escon-dido’s Wild Animal Park, Coronado Is-land, the Mission Valley shopping com-plex or finish up some parts of Balboa Park that you missed on Friday.

Further information will be in this loca-tion in the next Scoop. Watch this space and COME JOIN US IN SAN DIEGO!!!

Greetings Fellow T-Birders!

The Okanagan Classic Thunderbird Club, located in the magnificent Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, is pleased to sponsor our 15th an-nual Show & Shine, our first VTCI Northwest Regional Convention and our 9th annual Three-Day tour. We welcome all Thunderbirds from 1955 to 2005. Last year saw over 80 Thunderbirds participate, with a fairly even number of ‘Baby Birds’ and ‘Big Birds’. The cars were displayed on a grassy field adjacent to scenic Okanagan Lake in Kelowna’s beautiful downtown City Park. It was a spectacular sight!

The Three Day Tour covers some of the most scenic areas of British Colum-bia. In 2006 a total of 50 classics left Kelowna, to travel via paved, traffic-free back roads. This year the tour will end in Nelson BC. For those returning west we have added an optional 4th day to our trip.

In past years we have welcomed participants from all areas of British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho.

There are two registration forms; one for the VTCI Northwest Regional Convention and another for the Three-Day Tour. Separate sheets contain information on the Convention and the Three-Day Tour.

Please forward your registration forms and payment to:Okanagan Classic Thunderbird Club,Ken and Marion Carr,13575 Forest Hills Dr.,Lake Country B.C. V4V 1A5

2007 VTCI North Central

Regional

Wow, it seems like only yesterday since we last saw many of you at the 2002 VTCI North Central Regional Conven-tion in Winnipeg! Now here we are, counting the days until we can visit with you again!

Winnipeg is a diverse city with many sights and sounds that include the arts, sports, museums, cultural events, mu-sic and great dining. The choices are huge but our time is limited, so we hope you enjoy our selection of events.

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

For those “early birds”, join us for a tour to the downtown Pony Corral for a car show and dinner. This popular auto event runs from May to September. Many classic and special interest cars, including yours, will be on display.

Thursday, July 19, 2007

Can’t get enough of the greens? Spend the morning golfing at the nearby Transcona Golf Club. The cost of this event includes green fees for 9 holes. Use of a power cart is optional.

In the afternoon we have two options to choose from; Western Canadian Avi-ation Museum or a Tour of the Murals of Winnipeg. The aviation museum was founded in 1974 and restores and exhibits rare aircraft such as Canada’s first helicopter, the CL-84 Tilt-wing and our ‘flying saucer’ Avrocar. Since 1994, the Mural program has been an integral part in keeping graffiti and grime off the walls of city buildings.

There are more than 200 award-win-ning murals that have been commis-sioned throughout the city of Winnipeg. This tour takes you on a visit of the El-

lice Avenue murals. Both tours include transportation with the mural tour also including a refreshment break.

In the evening we hope that you will join us for a car cruise along the sce-nic Red River to Lockport for dinner at Skinners Restaurant. Skinners was first opened in 1929 where the Skinner family began selling their now famous foot-long hotdogs for a mere 10 cents. Today, with their foot-long hotdogs and NHL nostalgia photographs, Skinners is a Manitoba institution.

Friday, July 20, 2007

In the morning we hope that you will join us on a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint. The Winnipeg plant occupies a 14,864 square-metre state-of-the-art facility and produces all of Canada’s circulation coinage - literally billions of coins per year.

In the afternoon, experience the hos-pitality of the Academy Street Biz as they welcome Thunderbird Convention participants. The flavor - fun with a unique lunch experience. The excite-ment - find a treasure to purchase at some of the finest shops which include designer-original fashions, toys and gifts, bakeries, a spa experience, wine store and much more. The challenges - build the best poker hand as you visit the stores and use it to win prizes. Bob Krul, owner of Cornelia Bean, a specialty, tea, coffee and chocolate shop, will be creating a one-of-a-kind “T-Bird” blend tea especially for our convention. This souvenir gift will only be available to participants who at-tend this event! The tour cost includes transportation and lunch

20 21March/April 2007

Manitoba is known for its “socials”, which are just one big excuse to par-ty! The Thunderbird Club of Manitoba is excited to host the tribute show In”CLINE”ation: Sweet Dreams of Patsy Cline. This talented Manitoba-based group’s shows are continual sellouts, wherever they perform. The theme for this social evening will be Western, so bring your hats and boots!

Saturday, July 21, 2007

Saturday is the moment that we have all been waiting for! What a day it will be as we all polish, shine, and show our cars in preparation for the judging!

In the morning, for those who wish to leave their “other half” behind to clean and polish, a shuttle will be available to visit The Forks. The Forks was and still is a meeting place and one of the city’s

most popular destinations. The Forks is definitely a “must see” for any visitor.

On Saturday evening, we are proud to host the Awards Banquet. What a way to end the weekend -- cocktails, din-ner, awards and best of all the enjoy-ment of great company!

Sunday, July 22, 2007

Though this may be check-out for some, those of you who are taking in more of our great province please checkout our website at www.tbird-canada.ca for additional Winnipeg and Manitoba destination links.

Throughout the Weekend

Don’t forget to kick back and take a break in our Hospitality Room. Mingle while en-joying some refreshments and munchies. Check out the merchandise, and enter into a draw for a special prize.

We are delighted to again host the event at the Club Regent Casino Hotel. Take advantage of our “Early Bird” registration! If you register for both the conven-tion and your hotel room before May 18, 2007 you will be entered for a chance to win up to four days of your hotel stay for free!

President’s Message

Lou Paliani, VTCI President

Pull those dust covers off! Crankem’ up and cross your fingers that all those new parts you put on for this season still work! It’s the new season and I hope you are planning to show your new and improved bird off at some of the upcoming VTCI Events. Marilyn and I have been planning and we have three events we can make this year. Last year I sold my 1963 as I was in a wheel chair, could not drive or even clean the car. I didn’t plan on selling the car, however when a man called me and asked if I could help him find a Thunderbird for his father, I told him I had one for him to

look at to see exactly what he wanted. Before I knew it, I was looking at my tail lights going down the road! Along comes the new heart, I’m out of the wheel chair and Faye Leroy sends me a letter to see how I was doing. She said it was about time to sell Bill’s 1965 hardtop. (We lost Bill about 2 years ago.) Within 5 minutes Faye and I finished a deal on the phone and I will be showing the car this season in keeping with Bill’s traditions. Faye and Bill drove that car all over the states; deserts, snow storm, to each end of the country and still won Senior car status. Bill and Faye exemplify the true spirit of the VTCI . It will be an honor to show that car and I’ll be very happy to give you the history.

We’ll start off the season by attending the New Jersey Regional in May. It was a hard decision as the North Georgia Thunderbirds are hosting a regional in the same time frame. Because of some business and contacts I must make while on this trek, the Jersey Regional was geographically possible. I’ve never met anyone from Jersey on their own turf before. I just know what I’ve seen in the Sopranos, so I think I’ll fit right in as long as I keep eating. I will be stopping on the way to meet, have dinner and conversation with Joe Fleck of the new Columbus Chapter and talk about a 2008 regional in that area. On my way back we will visit Dan and Lynn Likar just before picking up my (Bill’s) car from Faye. On the final leg home, I plan to meet with J. Rodney Wake and the Mid-Kansas Vin-tage Thunderbird Club. This is a club that has been reported as knowing how to have fun (understatement). So I don’t know when I’ll get home. They have a regional in the works and I know it will be a real Pajunga. Additionally in May, there are two more Regionals; the Okanagan Classic Thunderbird Club is hosting a Regional and Road Trip. This road trip is a must and extremely well planned. It has been perfected through the years and I use it as an example in the VTCI annual CD. Also in May, the Wunderbirds of San Diego will be sponsoring a VTCI Regional with sev-

eral theme events in which to en-joy. There will be a South Central Regional on the calendar soon…yep, Captain Van Gale, the”Duke of Party” is at it again. Watch for this event in the Scoop. July brings the North Central Regional in Win-nipeg. Be ready for heaps of great Canadian hospitality and some very memorable times. And finally, the 2007 International!!!!! The Hous-ton Chapter has been working this event for two years in planning. It will be the crowning point of this season. Scheduled in October 2007, it will be a season celebration.

As you read the above summary of VTCI events, you may have thought that there may have been just too many events planned in May, which may cause some conflicts. You would be right. This is the sec-ond year in a row there have been crowded months and something is being done about it. Read the Scoop Forum articles as I will address this unacceptable condition in detail.

Changes: Wayne Hingle has completed his tour and sees it time for a new South Central Regional Director; welcome Al Richmond! Al will be seated as of 1 Jan 2007. Additionally, effective 15 February 2007, Leo Gravelle of Quebec, Canada will be seated as the new North East Regional Director. I am taking this opportunity to thank Wayne Hingle and Jim Cappuzzo for their outstanding work as Regional Directors.

I am soooo looking forward to seeing all of you this season, lots of stories, Thunderbirds, and friends to enjoy.

VTCI Forum Registration

To all of you that have recently or are thinking of registering for our VTCI forum at http://www.vintagethunder-birdclub.org/phpBB2/index.php. There has been a rash of pornographic and drug related people trying to register their websites with the VTCI forum. I have had to resort to screening all that register so please be patient with me and I will okay your registration as soon as I get the e-mail confirming you have registered. This e-mail I receive tells me someone has registered so I can check to see if they have added a website link and where it is before I confirm their registration.

Thanks for your patients, Terri McNeill, VTCI Publications Director

Our “Internation-al” convention will be held in the Detroit area where we have been invited to at-tend Ford’s big “all Ford” car show on the grounds of their corporate center at Dear-born in June. We also have three Regional conventions to chose from in 2003, Texas in May, Minnesota in July and Georgia in September. There will be several other club related events this year, not neces-sarily full blown regionals.

In his January message to the mem-bers, President Longaker announced that O. G. McDonald will be stepping down as our Concours Director being replaced by Dan Likar effective Janu-ary first. Our Northeast Regional Di-rector, Jim Cappuzzo has also resigned his position and will be replaced by Kevin Wallenhorst. President Lon-gaker invited all of our members to attend the International convention in conjunction with the Ford celebra-tion as well as the scheduled region-als. We also have a new keeper of the store; Luke Ober from Texas will be our new Country store manager. Vice President, Lou Paliani advised us that effective at the end of this year we will be required to renew our mem-bership on January first every year in-stead of our anniversary month. Dues will be prorated for members whose dues come due during the year. Dues were raised to $30 beginning January 1, 2001 for domestic members. Mem-bership numbers at the beginning of the year is about 2,000.

The Thunderbird Community was sad-dened to learn of the death of fa-mous Ford designer William P. Boyer. He passed away just short of his 76th birthday. Bill was instrumental in de-signing the first Thunderbird. He re-tired from Ford in 1985 were he served as Chief Designer for Ford of Australia and later as Design Executive, Ford Truck exterior and interior at the de-sign center in Dearborn. He went on to help design all future Thunderbirds until his retirement. He attended our International convention in Tampa, Florida in 1994 where he gave an in-terview to Alan Tast. Several of our members also met him there. Each year we lose several of our prominent members, folks who helped shape our club into the best Thunderbird club in the world. The Scoop lets us know of the passing of some of these mem-bers. During 2003 we lost Clay Loomis from Southern California, Clay helped form chapters in California and was a leader there. We also learned of the passing of Linda Donahue of Golden, Colorado. Linda was the wife of VTCI officer and the Rocky Moun-tain Chapter founder, Don. Jim Mc-Clanahan of Peru, Indiana also passed away in 2003, he was an avid T-Bird lover and member of our Indianapolis chapter. We learned later in the year that George Watts also passed away, George owned what was considered the very first 1955 Thunderbird of the production, the car was shown at our 2002 International convention in Cos-ta Mesa, California and many other shows. We will miss all of these fine Thunderbird friends and others whose names were not listed in the Scoop. This is what our club is all about, the people who own the cars we love.

mini regional has been inviting all Thunderbird lovers to central Illinois for 21 years and is a continuing tradi-tion. Seven states were represented with 55 Thunderbirds on the show field including a like new 1977 coupe with only 5974 miles on the odom-eter. Owner Patricia Seymour drove this pristine car to the show. There were several other club gatherings announced in the upcoming events pages of the “Scoop” but many times there is no follow up story.

The South Central Regional conven-tion was held from May 29 to June 1 in Clear Lake, Texas and hosted by the Vintage T-Birds of Houston. The hotel of choice was the Wellesley Inn & Suites in Webster, Texas. Room rates were $79. An article in the Septem-ber/October Scoop told us a little about this show. Several states were represented at the show where early arriving members enjoyed a pool side catered BBQ dinner on Thursday eve-ning. Friday was clean up day with a police escorted caravan to the Gulf Greyhound Dog track. The route to the track included some miles on I-45 dur-ing rush hour. A country fried chicken dinner was served at the track. Sat-urday was car show day with a prim rib or Atlantic salmon dinner that evening. There was no list of trophy winners in the article, however it was mentioned that Paul and Mary Prokop from Louisiana took Best of Show hon-ors with their 1963 Sport Roadster. It was also reported that EVERY reg-istrant left with a door prize and an award for their car.

The North Central Regional convention was held at Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis and hosted by the Thunderbird Midwest chapter from July 31 to August 3. The host

hotel was the Ramada Inn and rates were $79. We had over 70 cars in the judging field with cars as far away as Oklahoma. A highlight of the conven-tion was a tour of the John Woodhead Ford collection and museum. The col-lection spanned the entire range of Ford products, examples of Ford cars and trucks from 1903 to the present. Friday night the Up North theme party was in full swing with the Paul Bun-yan chorus serenading the dinner at-tendees with “camp song” style mu-sic. Many members dressed in typical “North Woods” attire.

Saturday was judging day, complete with a replica of the 1959 Hollman-Moody Thunderbird racecar shown by owner Wally Warhepa. Best of show honors for best driven car went to Ross Reed with his 1963 Roadster, Best of Show trailered was won by Gene Hnatuk from Canada with his 1964 convertible We had four Senior Divi-sion cars in attendance, three were displayed in the Participation Division and were not judged, the owners were Gary & Jeanie Dickinson, Al & Marilyn Schulz and Barry & Diane Blazevic. Dan & Marilyn Schafer brought their senior 1966 convertible and took a first place in the judged division. In the Primary Division we had four first place winners, owners were Ross Reed, Gene Hnatuk, Ray & Pat Koski and Jerry & Helen Peterson. Display Division first place winners were Jim & Joanne Reed, Gene & Ruth Jack-son, George & Darlene Rue and John & Karen Ryan. First place winners in the Drivers Division went to Ed & Joanne Schimidt, Cliff & Pat Lieske, Jack & Leila Nessen, Mike Abbott, Tim & Laura Pundt, Ed & Joanne Sefara, David Doerr and Ray & Pat Koski.

We encourage our members to send us pictures and stories about their cars and many of them are printed in the pages of the Scoop. It is impossible for me to report on all the stories that are submitted but occasionally you would probably be interested in what I con-sider a special story. This involves our member from Colorado, Kathi Gal-bari, formerly from Arizona. Kathi tells about her father’s love of Thun-derbirds and the1966 Town Landau he found behind a barn in sad shape, which he bought for $500. The car was painted red and very faded; there was body damage and large rust holes. The interior was a mess with the headliner on the floor and moldy carpeting. Gen-erally the car was very sad and some of us would consider it a parts car. Her father had always wanted a T-Bird and this was his dream car so he finally got it running. Kathi’s mother taught her all about Q-tips and toothbrushes and cotton balls. Her father had the car painted the original color, replaced the headliner and carpet. About a year and a half later her dad was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. He never re-gained the energy he had before and about the only thing he was able to do was drive the T-Bird around the neighborhood. Kathi’s mother didn’t do anything more with the car, she drove it into a barn in Wisconsin and parked it. Kathi didn’t know the right time to ask her mom about the car, by this time the car wasn’t running and had been sitting for a long time. Small furry animals had once again made it their home; there were condos under the hood. Kathi and a friend got it run-ning and drove it around the Wisconsin countryside for a week or so to see if it would make the 2500-mile trip back to Arizona. She promised her mom she would take care of the car and

not sell it and maybe even take it to a car show. The trip back to Arizona went without a hitch, she is sure her dad had a hand in getting her home safely. She joined the Central Arizona Chapter in 1992 and has enjoyed be-ing part of our club. She took the car to the South Central Regional in New Braunfels, Texas in 2002. The car pre-formed very well and the trip was un-eventful except for all the bugs that impaled themselves on her clean car, which made some work for her before the show. Kathi has become an active member of our club and will be seen at other shows in the future.

Each year many of our members are involved in and sponsor local events, some are reported in the pages of the “Scoop”. These are usually local gath-erings and not necessarily official VTCI sponsored shows. Van Gale, President of the Acadian Chapter in New Orleans related his experience at a World of Wheels event at the Super Dome; he was not impressed with all the “works of art” and a few concours quality cars. In May a very special weekend was planned for all Thunderbird lov-ers at Johnson City, Tennessee at the Bristol Motor Speedway where own-ers had the option to drive around the world’s fastest half-mile oval in their pride and joy. A total of 54 Thunder-birds participated as well as club presi-dent Steve Longaker and co pilot Ann. The event ended with a parade down spectator lined Main Street for “Birds on Parade”. A fantastic dinner capped the evening, which was covered by a local Television crew.

Another event reported in the “Scoop” was the 21st annual “Thunderbird Rendezvous” hosted by the Land of Lincoln Chapter was held in Bloom-ington, Illinois in September. This

convertible, they also took home the Best of Show Overall, a special award to the highest scoring car. The Best Overall award was named for WW II hometown hero General Robert L. Scott who was a pilot with the famed Flying Tigers. Best of Show Driven was awarded to Clell & Ann Stewart of Florida with a 1961 Hardtop. A Best Heritage (1955-1957) was awarded at the show and won by Jim & Sherri McNew of Oklahoma with their 1955. First place winners in the Primary Division were Randy & Karen Rychlik, Ray & Shirley McCully, Van Gale, and Jim & Sherri McNew. Second place went to Clell & Ann Stewart and Hugh & Lindalee Walters. Third place Primary went to George & Bettie Queen and Rick & Natalie Powell earned a third place. In the Drivers Division we had two first place awards, they went to Joe & Mae Lipovsky and Tucker & Terry Haught. There were two second place awards to Dale & Donna Hardie and Rod Barko . We had two cars entered in the Touring Division and both received a first place, owners were Chip Hood and Bill Eckert. We had only one Late Model entered and it took a first place owned by C.E. & Nancy Ward. There were five cars in the Modified division, no first place awards but two seconds went to Daniel & Eileen Watts and Timothy Byas, three third place trophies went to Whitey Demaree, Tony Barker and Steve Smith. In the Current Generation division we had four first place awards. There went to Dee & Mark Monroe, John & Debbie Bowen, Hugh & Lindalee Walters and Pam & James Piper.

The premier event of the year was our 31st International convention which was held in Southfield, Michigan in conjunction with the Ford Motor Com-pany 100th anniversary from June 12 to the 16th. Tickets for the Ford cel-

ebration were $24.95 per person and available from Ford. Our host hotel was the Holiday Inn at Southfield that was located about ten miles north of Ford’s corporate headquarters and their celebration. You may have no-ticed at the beginning of this history I mentioned that it was the club’s 35th anniversary, this is true, the club was started in 1968 but the first convention of National scope was held in 1972 and we had to cancel the National show in 1992 due to hotel complications which makes this our 31st show.

The Ford Motor Company used their parking lot and adjoining areas at their headquarters for parking of all of the different Ford makes and models, rang-ing from the very earliest models to the latest power plants. Many of our members who attended our convention also were involved with the big Ford show. No other optional activities were offered to members who attended our show. The Saturday evening awards banquet was the only thing you need-ed to sign up for except if you want-ed your car judged of course but we don’t charge to have our members cars judged as some clubs do. The banquet consisted of English Cut Strip Beef Loin or Chicken Picatta, but the meal was secondary to the trophy presentation. Alan Tast and John McCarthy also put together a presentation that was in-spired. They organized a team of Wix-om workers who had actually helped build the first Thunderbirds to come off the assembly line in the late 50s. After a professionally organized power point presentation, the old timers, some had worked for Ford since the late 40s, took questions from our members.

We were privileged to have our third club President Larry & his wife Nancy Seyfarth with us; they brought their

Four of the new generation birds were at the show, all receiving first place honors. The owners were Jim & Mau-reen Mills, Charles & Marcia Carroll, Lloyd & Ardys Smith and Max & Bev Bowman. In the Heritage Division we had two first place cars owned by Jim & Sherri McNew and Barry & Diane Blazevic. Two Late Model entries re-ceived first place honors; the owners were Terry & Dusty Fletcher and Bruce Nelson. Two Modified cars took home first place trophies; owners were Jeff Schneider & Bev and Keith DeLuca.

The South East Region held a Regional convention this year and was hosted by the Dixieland Thunderbirds Chapter. The show was held in Warner Robbins, Georgia from September 4 to 7. Thun-der in Dixie was in full swing on Thurs-day with cars and owners arriving at the Ramada Inn in Warner Robins, Georgia, room rates were a very special $59. Team Ford and Saleen brought a proto-type Saleen BonSpeed Thunderbird to the convention. They also brought their Hollywood Homicide Saleen Mustang for members to see and even purchase if the spirit moved anyone. The cars stayed on display in front of the hotel for most of the weekend.

Several members experienced me-chanical problems on the way to the show including a stuck valve that caused the engine to lose power which required the head to be removed, not an easy fix. This was done by club members in the parking lot after the car was brought to the show the last 50 miles by Virgil Smith of the Saleen group, who drove his F 550 pickup with gooseneck trailer out to the in-terstate to bring the 1959 convertible owned by Danny Watts to the hotel. After all this excitement everyone en-joyed a BBQ dinner on Thursday eve-

ning despite some overcast weather and possible storms. Friday was set aside to see local sites including a group of members who went over to Reeves RPM for the Thunder Road Chassis Dyno event. Another group caravanned out to the Air Museum at Robins Air Force Base under police es-cort. The air museum boasts a world-class collection of aircraft from our Air Corp history. Meanwhile back at the hotel Jim Lyle and crew were work-ing to get Danny’s convertible back on the road. Judges training took place on Friday afternoon in preparation for the concours on Saturday morning. A poker run around the city of Warner Robins was the fun event after an “all you can eat” Low Country Boil at the hotel. After the poker run a DJ pro-vided music for our entertainment while prizes were awarded for the best poker hands.

Judging took place on Saturday morn-ing after a briefing by the chief judge then three judging teams went to work. The concours field consisted of 38 cars including twelve of the new generation. Judging was completed by 2:30 P.M. just in time for several of our members to drive pilots of the USAF Thunderbirds from our hotel to the air-port for the afternoon air show where they were the featured performance. There was a photo opportunity with the pilots and a question and answer session. That evening the banquet din-ner included Beef Tenderloins and Herb Chicken and all the fixins. The show was a big hit with the local commu-nity and was covered by newspapers and television. The Mayor also made a surprise appearance and was very im-pressed with the Thunderbirds.

Best of Show Trailered went to Randy & Karen Rychlik of Georgia with a 1962

Paliani told us that the club is basical-ly treading water in respect to mem-bership and we are holding at about 2000 members. Renewal notices will be included in the fall “Scoops” to re-mind members about their new expi-ration date. An updated membership rooster and bylaws is now available yearly on a computer disc that can be requested by members, it is updated yearly. Vice President Paliani tells us that most of the club’s business is conducted throughout the year via e-mail as questions and concerns occur and these decisions are ratified at the yearly board of directors meeting. It was decided to change the renewal for members to be January first for all members and to prorate members who join during the year, this was considered to be a money saving is-sue. The next item was ratification of new VTCI officers, which was ap-proved unanimously. Several changes in the By laws were discussed con-cerning wording to satisfy state law, the change in the renewal time, and allowances for officers. The board accepted all changes. Another is-sue concerned the purchase of dash

plaques for the International conven-tion; the directors turned this down. An event report by Terri McNeill dis-cussed what if any changes the mem-bership would approve for conven-tions. The poll returned by members indicated that they wanted to keep events the way they are and would like to see more trained judges for our judged events.

New business included the sites for next year’s conventions; the Interna-tional show will be held at Hannibal, Missouri and hosted by the Land of Lin-coln chapter. The South Central region will host a Regional in the Dallas, Texas area. The South West region is plan-ning a show in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Graham Hurley invited all of us to join him in England in July for a European convention. President Longaker ex-plained the changes to the member-ship renewal beginning next January and the directors approved the 2004 budget. There was some discussion about judges training, recognition, and the possibility of having judging on Friday rather than the traditional Saturday and having the concours rules put on a compact disc for easier use.

Senior 1959 convertible and showed it in the Senior Display Division. They brought this car and showed it at the very first convention of our club way back in 1972, it was a company car that the Seyfarth’s drove for it’s first year then they bought it. At the time Larry was an engineer for Ford. Larry and Nancy served the club for many years, Larry as our third President and Nancy in several positions including Vice President and Secretary.

We had just over 100 registrations. We judged 72 cars and awarded 56 trophies. We had only eleven cars in the Senior/Primary judged Divisions earning awards. John and Marge Saw-yer of Michigan with their 1965 Lan-dau earned best of Show Driven. Jim Cappuzzo of New Jersey earned best of Show Trailered for his 1963 Sport Roadster. Pictures of the two best of show winners can be seen on the front and rear cover of the Septem-ber/October “Scoop”. Winners in the Senior judged Division were Jim Cappuzzo, William & Susan Darrington and Dan & Marilyn Schaeffer. Bob Ranick and Harold & Margaret Secrest also brought their Senior cars and put them in the Senior Display Division. Three cars were entered in the Senior Participation division, owners were Larry & Nancy Seyfarth, Bob Ranick and Harold & Margaret Secrest. First place winners in the Primary Division were Randall & Karen Rychlik, Anton & Janette Anderson, Elaine Ander-son, Dwayne Hickman, John & Mary McCarthy, John & Marge Sawyer and Keith & Kathy Hoppel. We had only one-second place award in Primary it was awarded to Elmer Tatman. There were two third place cars in Primary, Richard & Natalie Powell and Wayne & Snyder were the owners.

Dennis & Judie Moreau took a first place and Jerry & Harriett Trzeciak took a second place in the Modified Division. Two cars were shown in the Late Model division. Donald Reinke took a second place and Bill & Shirley Shestopalka took a third place. We had five “new” models in the Current Year Division, all of them received a first place award. The winners were Lou & Marilyn Paliani, Larry & Bob-bie Menefee, James & Maurine Mills, Max & Beverly Bowman and Marc & Cindy Sagrillo. First place winners in the Drivers Division were Ed & Joanne Schmidt, Thomas Tabor, Ed & Sandy Elzinga, Jack & Leila Nessen, and Paul & Charlotte Nichols. Second place in Drivers went to Roger Noll, Tim & Te-resa Hickman, Art & Pat Roe and Jerry & Marianne Schmalling. Tim & Laura Pundt took a third place in the Driv-ers division. First place winners in the Display Division were Jay Williamson, Kevin & Karen Wallenhorst, Debbie & Alan Shorr, Charles Glendenning, Greg & Jackie Dockter, Mike Mielke, Terri & Bob McNeill and Bob Harris. Second place in Display went to David Lau, James De La Cruz, Cindy Taylor, Cindy & Randy Mattson, Dale Komives, Lynn Likar, and Alice & Ken Crosbie. Third place in Drivers went to Scott Nelson, Dave Edmonds, Leo Gravelle, Dean Kleinhenz, Bernard & Marcia Steffans and Gene Collins.

The annual board of directors meet-ing was held on June 12, all members of the board were present. In the Treasurer’s report Randy Mattson indi-cated that we were showing a loss but it was attributed to the change in the dues being changed to the first of the year starting this year and all mem-bers had not renewed on time. The Secretaries Report was next, Marilyn

Ford 100th AnniversaryHonorary lifetime membership was given to three members, Ken Harkema and O. G. McDonald, former concours directors and Jim Cappuzzo, former Regional Director.

President Longaker then addressed the board and told us that his new business and family obligations have taken most of his free time and he has decided to step down as our President after two years of his four-year term. He will turn over his duties to Vice President Lou Paliani after this convention. Lou will serve out the remaining two years of Steve’s term. President Paliani ad-dressed the club in the September/Oc-tober Scoop as our new President. It was decided that Paul Prokop, South Central Regional Director will replace

Lou as Vice President and Wayne Hingle from New Orleans will take Paul’s place as South Central Regional Director. This concludes the board minutes for 2003.

The Thunderbirds of England Chapter has invited us to England next year for the first V.T.C.I. official convention held there. A bus tour of London and a boat trip down the River Thames with a trip to the Duxford Air Museum and a trip to Cambridge University were just some of the highlights our Eu-ropean Director Graham Hurley has planned to keep us busy. Many of our members will take to the skies to en-joy this unusual show next year. I will report on it in the next edition of the club’s History.

Picture above is taken at the Madison County GA homecoming in October of 2006. Our 1956 Thunderbird led the parade with several other clas-sics. Our car transported homecoming queen, Amber Hill. She had not seen the car until it picked her up and the dress color matched the car perfectly! It was just one of those magnificent coincidences!!! The car was as big a hit as Amber was...

by Jean & Fred Sowle, England

We had owned a Pontiac Firebird for over twenty years, a good car and we were really quite hap-py with it…That is until one day we had a drive in a 65 T. Bird Convertible. We were very much impressed and from that moment wanted to own one! This was over twelve years ago, possibly more and Freddie had set his heart on finding a 65/66 convertible in top condition, or at least one with a first class paint job.

We had numerous vacations to California, searching for the right car. During that time we met some really great people including Ralph and Anita Nunez, Gerry and Harriet Trzeciak, Joe and Loise Arce, and Ann and George Bushling. (We were so saddened to hear of George’s recent passing) Over the years we all became very good friends and we enjoyed meeting up with them at Palm Springs almost every year.

We now realize that we lost a lot of time looking for a specific Model

A low mileage (68,000) car with maintenance records documenting all service done to it since the original owner. This amazes me as I am the 6th owner. When I bought the car on Ebay two years ago, the owner didn’t even advertise the documentation, he just threw a duffle bag full of the receipts in the back seat of the car when it was shipped from California! A consistent show winner and head turner, this car is a joy to drive

Fun, Fun, Fun, in South Bend, Indiana

Submitted by Roger Noll, President Hoosier Vintage Thunderbird Club

October 21, 2006

A total of 44 members and guests of The Vintage Thunderbird Club of In-diana and host club, Hoosier Vintage Thunderbird Club, joined together in the historic city of South Bend, In-diana to tour the Center for History Museum, The National Studebaker Museum, and Copshahom, the the former home of Joseph Doty Oliver.

Studebaker National Museum’s priceless collection of wagons, vehicles, and artifacts spans 150 years of local industrial history. Its new home is a state of the art mu-seum reflecting the design tradi-tions of Studebaker buildings from the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Copshahom, built in 1895-96, was designed by Charles Alonzo Rich of New York. It was the home of Jo-seph Doty Oliver, President of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works. The house is made of native granite, has three floors with a full basement and attic, an interior of oak, cherry and mahogany, thirty-eight rooms, nine bathrooms and fourteen fire-places. The furnishings on all floors are original, showing the house as it appeared when used by the Oliver Family. The furnishings date from the late 18th century to the mid 20th century and include furniture, porcelains, glass, silver, prints, and

bronzes. Also on the two and a half acre site includes historic gardens, the Copshaholn Carriage House, and Leighton Gallery Visitor Center, the History Center, and the Worker House Museum.

The Center for History features five galleries including “Voyages Gallery”, a series of permanent exhibitions where visitors can ex-plore stories of the St. Joseph Riv-er Valley from pre-historic era to the present day.

A delicious lunch was served at The East Bank Emporium Restaurant located in downtown South Bend, overlooking the St. Joseph River, Century Center, Island Park and the East Race Waterway.

It was a very interesting and enjoy-able day, and it was great to renew acquaintances with the Indianapolis area club members. It was a won-derful way to end our club season.

The car sounds great too, with new stainless steel mufflers and pipes. It is great to take it out on a good day with the top down, it just goes like Dynamite!

The photograph was taken at the gate house of Lullingston Castle at Eynsford in Kent, which is under an hours drive from London. It is set in 140 acres, one of England’s old-est Family Estates, dating back to the time of Domesday. The pres-ent Manor House, Built in 1497 has been home to the same family ever since. Both Henry V111 and Queen Ann are known to have been regu-lar visitors. It is well worth a visit when on vacation in the UK.

in top condition. In the event, or it just so happened that there was a black 61 for sale about four hours away in the UK. We went to see it, iked it a lot and brought it back with us. This was May 2001.

It was a good straight car, not welded and no rust. It had been partially restored in Florida dur-ing 1989/1990 and there, painted black, and then imported into the UK in 1995, having had two previ-ous owners in the North of England. The car had lots of small jobs to be done. It has a good strong engine and transmission and with the car were US receipts for thousands of $’s for parts, for chrome work and convertible top overhaul. Ralph kindly helped me to locate the parts that I now needed. It was at this time that we e mailed him the VIN number and He replied at once asking us to check the VIN number again? Next he asked us to look for gold paint under the carpets. We soon found the gold paint, it was all very exciting! It now appeared that we had a rare 61 festival/pace car which was hiding under a really good black paint job! The restorers in the US, the previous owners and ourselves had no idea that it was such a rare car!

This car had even been featured in the UK Classic American car maga-zine, issue #100 in August 1999, all unaware even at this time that it was a Festival car. I bet it would look re-ally great in gold too! The car is all sorted and set up good now. It drives really well, especially on it’s new wheels and radial tyres. The under-neath is all painted, also many new bolts, and anything worn replaced.

Concours Corner

Paul Prokop, Concours Director

Two items for this issue: our 2006 show results and a new concours rule on data plate deviations.

2006 show season:

In 2006, we held four regionals (Fredericksburg, Texas; Kansas City, Kansas; Flagstaff, Arizona and Boise, Idaho) and the international in Or-lando, Florida. We judged 121 Thunderbirds in six divisions (5 senior, 31 primary, 47 driver, 19 touring, 15 modified and 4 late models). We displayed 45 Thunderbirds in three classes (4 in senior participation, 17 2002-2005 models and 24 in all the other display classes)

Every one of those Thunderbirds represented the hard work and hopes of an owner who was willing to enter the arena of com-petition and accept public praise and endure criticism for their workmanship. I commend each of you for your efforts and investment (both financial and emotional).

Each competing owner deserves a thorough and fair evaluation of their Thunderbird – please do your part and get certified as a VTCI concours judge and do your part in the judging process.

New data plate deviation concours rule:

The board has approved a new concours rule requiring modification point deductions for items specified on the data plate or in the VIN, that appear differently on the Thunderbird. The new text is:

2.9 Use & installation of factory-installed accessories & options.

Factory installed accessories are those components that were available for installation on a Thunderbird during its original assembly. In some cases, a factory-installed accessory could also be provided and installed by a Ford dealer if the item was so designated in factory literature. Some items or option packages were only available from the factory due to assembly and/ or installation requirements. Documentation of what was originally installed from the factory can be found on copies of the Thunderbird’s original factory invoice/gate release, build/routing (a.k.a. ROT) sheet, the retail price list posted with the car, (i.e. “window sticker”) and to some degree, the data plate and VIN stampings.

Installation of accessories only available through the factory is not allowed on Thunderbirds that were not originally built with them. VTCI judging does not require the owner provide factory invoice/gate release, build/routing (a.k.a. ROT) sheet or the retail price list posted with the car, (i.e. “window sticker”), with the exception of cars being judged for authenticity. Without these docu-ments the judge will not be able to determine if certain options were origi-

nally installed unless the installation is not complete and/or not installed to factory requirements.

A number of significant attributes of the Thunderbird are documented on the data plate and in VIN stamp-ings. Judges will be able to deter-mine if the car is a special model, i.e. convertible, Sports Roadster, Turbo Coupe, etc., what engine, transmis-sion, or rear end should be installed and the correct (original) exterior color and interior trim. The car must match the data plate and VIN stamp-ings or modification point(s) will be deducted as outlined in the judging sheets. Alteration to the data plate is not allowed.

Factory installed options (those desig-nated with an “F” in the OFS listing) present on the vehicle but specified differently on the data plate or in the VIN will result in modification point(s) deduction. For example, on a 1963, a “M” code aluminum intake manifold and triple carburetors on a vehicle

with a “Z” code in the VIN would result in a modification point deduction.

It is the intention of this section to recognize obvious, objective modifications – a raven black 1963 Thunderbird repainted rangoon red, a vinyl interior changed to leather, etc. Minor, subjective variations, such as the proper shade for the Emberglo metallic on a 1965 Special Landau, for example, will not result in a deduction.

For the authenticity award, which uses the criterion of factory-delivered condition, the presence of additional factory-only accessories, such as air conditioning in a car originally built without it, when compared against the required factory documentation, will result in a ‘0’ entry. See Section 3.4, AUTHENTICITY AWARD.

This new rule will be in effect for the 2007 show season and will be in-cluded in the next revision to volume 1 of the concours rules.

Microsoft Access Database Expert Needed

It has been a long term goal of VTCI to create and maintain a database of judg-ing results from regionals and internationals. Ideally, the database would reside on the server with our website and be accessible to members via password.

That is proving to be a complex task, so, in the short term, we intend to cre-ate the database in Microsoft Access and include it on the annual CD, along with the roster, bylaws, etc.

What we need is a person experienced in database creation to get us up and running within Microsoft Access – write the tables needed and create the data input interface so that I can enter the data.

Ideally, a volunteer will step forward. If not, and you are a professional in the field (you make a living working with databases), we can negotiate some level of remuneration.

If you can do this for your club, please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks,Paul J. Prokop. Concours Director, VTCI

Sad And Scary Thunderbird Story

Follow Up...

by Steve Legel

I appreciated the prompt Oak-land County Sheriff response, and Adler’s towing company careful lift of my one-wheel-less Thunderbird and recommendation to use Bak-er’s service in Pontiac Michigan. National Parts Depot in Livonia Michigan had a pair of rear drums in stock, and NAPA provided shoes and cylinders. Within a few days of running around, Bakers had re-done both sides of the rear brakes and the car was roadworthy. With a bent left rear fender and broken pieces in the trunk, I drove it cross town and back to my workshop building. On investigation, all lug nuts had worked their way off the lugs on the left rear wheel. All 5 lug nuts were only finger tight on the right side as well. Baker ex-plained to me that it is common with untightened lug nuts to loosen all the way on the left side rather than on the right. As the left wheel rotates forward, counter-clock-

wise, there is a constant rub of the wheel against the lug nut, pushing the lug nuts in a counter clockwise direction. In this way, effectively loosening the lug nut, i.e., rotat-ing it off the lug bolt stud. This typically does not happen on the right side, where forward motion rotates the wheel clockwise and in a way, pulls the lug nut to stay on the lug bolt stud. Classic Chrysler products, and some other makes, utilize reverse threaded lugs on the left side.

I filed a claim with my classic car insurer, Hagerty. I have been pleased with the interest and concern regarding my problem. While my problem was small, I be-lieve the company will go to great lengths to satisfy a policy holder. I had restored the car previously, and have a fully equipped shop. I had asked for the courtesy of being allowed to repair my Thunderbird, at my leisure. This was acceptable under my policy. An appraiser was assigned my claim, and he phoned and made arrangements, at my convenience to meet me at my office, where it was easy for me to bring my car to work. Together

we discussed the damage and ap-proach to the repair. Mr. Haller is knowledgeable and friendly. He made allowance for disassembly, body panel work, welding, door alignment, finish prep, painting and reassembly. He made allow-ance for replacement of parts too bent to restore, based on an es-timate for good used parts from Marvin Hill’s Thunderbird Center. He coordinated the invoices I had already paid for the tow, the brake parts and service, as well as his calculation for the body repair.

Among the paperwork, was verifi-cation of clear title in my name. I sent a photocopy of my title, registration and Hagerty proof of insurance. I had never looked, or noticed, that the VIN on my policy did not match the VIN on my title, until the claims adjuster, Heather, at Hagerty was verifying the paper-work. I made a pencil tracing from the data plate and took my origi-nal paperwork to Michigan Secre-tary of State (DMV in some states). Turns out, a clerical error had been made when I titled the car 15 years ago, and the previous title number, and not the vehicle identification number, had been transposed on the VIN line of the title, when the new title number was assigned. I had to write and sign an affida-vit explaining the problem, leave my data plate tracing and pay a $15.00 fee to correct the Secretary of State error. Hagerty Insurance was then able to pay the claim to me with documentation of correct-

ed title request paperwork. In all, the claim was settled within one month, including the inspection of the car and the paperwork snafu. I do not know if Hagerty subse-quently sought subrogation of the insurance policy of the mechanic who had worked on the brake sys-tem just prior to the incident and did not torque the lug nuts. I have not been back to discuss it.

It is my plan to begin work on the Thunderbird when our Michigan win-ter weather breaks in the spring.

On a humorous note, I searched and searched for my missing tire and rim. I provided this tongue in cheek description of my efforts to my local chapter newsletter...

“Man arrested after roadside inci-dent,” Associated Press, Oakland County Michigan

Today police arrested an apparent vagrant as he emerged from road-side bushes. The man, police re-port, was wearing what appeared to be only ragged remnants of clothing and his skin was covered with swollen welts and cuts over 90% of his flesh. One grizzly sheriff commented, “I saw that Mel Gib-son movie, and the flogging was nothing like this.” Investigators are unsure how long the man had been wandering in the dense underbrush along the highway connector.

The man had been identified as Steven Legel. He was unable to speak coherently when he stum-bled out of the brush, dehydrated and numbed. Legel is no stranger

4 4March/April 2007

to the police in this area, having recently been investigated for littering an old car tire from the highway in the same location.

His father, Robert Legel, who asked not to be identified, shrugged his shoulders and replied to reporter’s inquiries, “He’s a car guy and lives in metro Detroit...what more can I say?”

State of Michigan Natural Resourc-es officers were on hand to ticket Legel for trampling native species ground cover along the highway.

At the hospital while cuffed to a gurney, Legel momentarily gained consciousness, and cried out, “Call C.S.I. and find my wheel!!” Before lapsing into a semi comatose state.

I spent 2 ½ hours today combing the deep brush looking for my er-rant wheel and tire. I covered both sides of the roadway, at least 3/4 mile in each direction, I looked as far as I could get away from the roadway. An expanding 360 degree search from where the grinding marks are still in the cement from where the wheel fell off. I explored the probable routes, the possible routes, the unlikely routes and a couple no way Jose routes that the tire may have traveled. I looked for it rolling away, but I think it probably jammed in between the fender skirt and fender, then the weight of the car pressed against it, until the skirt gave way and it ejected from under the car. I tried scouting out how it could bounce like a basket ball, changing direc-tions. Surprisingly, this stretch of road is lined by multiple guard rails and fencing. I still think it is under the dense weeds, and as fall comes I still have hope to find it.

Fall did arrive, and in November I had the opportunity to retrace my route.

Today, Friday 11/17/06 was the day for the state high school girl’s swimming preliminaries at Oakland University. My daughter, Shelby, was qualified in the 200 I.M. and the 500 Freestyle. I saw patients in the morning and left for the meet at lunchtime. My route from the of-fice to the Oakland University took me past the section of road where the wheel came off, and where I was unable to find it despite 4 1/2 hours of scrounging in heavy thorny brush. The route is inconvenient from home or work, so I decided to stop and have another look, as fall has set in and the leaves are off the trees here.

I exited the expressway, where I had done on previous searches and was HORRIFIED to see that the area of heavy brush had been mowed with a bushwacker, the trees cut down and run through a chipper. The area had been leveled with a bulldozer. I thought for sure if my wheel was there it had been mangled and the tire shredded or if found already on its way to a landfill. Dedicated to the last, I parked the car and walked into the area. About 100 yards in, there was a large pile of debris...pallets, boards, branches, signs, other tires. On the far side of the huge pile, about waist high...you guessed it...sat my rim and tire, smiling in its pink rim and white wall glory. The rim was not bent and the tire not shredded. In fact the tire held air and the white wall was pretty clean. I rolled it back to my car and loaded it into the trunk. Total invested time...about 5 minutes.

SCOOP PHOTOS: I am sure you have noticed that we now have color on the inside of our magazine! BUT, I am very quickly running out of photos to use on the color pages and I re-ally need your help.

I need cover and “Reader Ride” photos. Don’t just send one, send 4-5 so I can choose and use more than one. Front, back, 3/4, interior, en-gine etc. I also need licence plate photos (close-up) and A photo of the car that it is attached. AND if it is a high resolution photo, with a very nice, and possibly a unique background it will

appear on the cover. Portrait for the front cover (hold the camera sideways), or landscape for the back cover.

Send photos one of two ways; digital, (the best) the highest resolution your camera will achieve, (the less photos you are able to take on your card/memory mean better resolution) and don’t retouch it in any way, send di-rectly from the camera. You can send them either e-mail (10 meg maximum) or write a cd disc and send to me snail mail at the address below.

2. If you are using a film camera, send me either the disk (or copy the disk) that most photo processing places provide or a professionally pro-cessed photo, Please no reprints from your home printer as they do not scan well. They leave a rough emulsion type finish that covers the origi-nal photo. Good example; compare the quality of page 36 and 37. The photo on 36 was (I believe) printed on a home printer, it has a darker film covering the photo and takes away it’s sharpness, I had to spend quite a bit of time after scanning trying to get it clear enough to use. I really wanted to use the photo as it was a unique situation that should not be passed up. The photos on page 37 were digital, from a high resolution camera and I am sure you can see the difference. They were put on a CD and snail-mailed to me along with many photos for me to choose from for the collage. I have had members get very upset with me because I can not use their photos on the cover of the Scoop but there is criteria that needs to be followed. Photos seen in the Scoop are only as good as the photos that are sent to me. Last word...NO WEB PHOTOS!!!

Advertising your Event

By Terri McNeill, Publications Director

Whether we’re talking about a large-scale regional or international conven-tion or a smaller local show, attendance at VTCI-sponsored events can be measur-ably increased through effective market-ing; beginning as early as possible, pref-erably, at least a year or more in advance of the start date. Show coordinators are encouraged to take advantage of recent improvements to the Scoop and submit promotional articles, full-color pictures, registration forms and event schedules as soon as details are finalized. To maximize attendance and thus, the eventual suc-cess of your show, I recommend publiciz-ing your event in at least three (3) issues prior to the scheduled event; in keeping with this schedule, materials should be in my hands no later than eight (8) months prior to the start date.

Show coordinators should also keep in mind that advertising materials and forms placed in the Scoop must conform to the physical restrictions imposed by the actual size of the printed page. As VTCI Publications Director and managing editor of the Scoop, I reserve the right to exercise editorial privilege and refor-mat these materials in a manner which conforms to current Scoop publication standards, and/or to enhance the ma-terials’ artistic and presentation value. In particular, all registration forms must comply with the VTCI’s master registra-tion template, which has been provided to all chapter presidents and approved by the BOD. As with regular vendor ad-vertising, all materials publicizing VTCI-sponsored events will be sent to the show coordinator, electronically, for fi-nal proofing prior to their insertion into the Scoop. Prompt response by show co-ordinators will assure adequate publicity for their events.

Record Thunderbird Sales Prices

Submitted by Steve Longaker

November 11, 2006, Addison, Illinois was the time and place of the “Cappy” Collection auction conducted by RM Auctions of Ontario, Canada.

Jerry Capizzi has for years participated in the VTCI, Lincoln, Mercury and Edsel Clubs. When his cars appeared at meets we all new that they would probably be best of show winners. Bob Welsh and Chuck Mill, who did all of the restorations, turned out the best of the best. Each vehicle was perfectly restored and absolutely stunning!

The auction attracted many bidders including some folks from the VTCI. The bidding was fast and furious with several new records established.

Below is a listing of the Thunderbirds that were bid on and sold.

1966 Convertible and tonneau cover .................. $ 88,0001960 Convertible with air ................................. 63,8001958 Convertible with air ................................ 111,1001957 “F” Supercharged ................................... 319,0001963 Triple Black “M” Roadster ......................... 192,5001957 “E” Dual carb ........................................ 187,0001962 “M” Roadster ........................................ 121,0001956 .......................................................... 69,3001963 “M” Convertible ...................................... 88,0001955 .......................................................... 55,0001962 “M” Roadster ......................................... 68,7501957 .......................................................... 71,5001961 Convertible ........................................... 44,0001956 .......................................................... 63,2501959 Convertible ........................................... 41,2501963 “M” Landau ........................................... 57,750

Installing New Driver’s Side Hinges

1995 Thunderbird LX

Submitted by Greg Marshall, Calgary, Alberta Canada

It is possible to remove both upper and lower hinges from the driver’s side door without taking apart the dash. The removal of the parking brake foot assembly is definitely required. This has to be done so that you take out the inner black plastic/foam skirting that is se-cured behind the brake assembly.

Prior to this other panels need to re-moved; are the lower steering col-umn cover and the side cowling.

To remove the parking brake you need to create slack in the cable so you can pull the end of the cable off the pulley arm. You can do this by two ways, either releasing the tensioner near the rear axle under the car, or you can lightly clamp the front intermediate cable con-nector (located under the driver’s footboard area) to the underskirt-ing of the car. To clamp the inter-mediate connector, compress the parking brake fully, then C-clamp the connector to metal of the un-derskirting of the body. You don’t have to clamp it very hard and you might want to use a small rag to protect the paint.

a socket extension (it comes off with two bolt screws.) You should now be able to access the upper and lower nuts with 12” socket ex-tension on 13mm socket.

There is no need to remove the door panel since the wiring does not readily disconnect to fully remove the door. There should be enough slack in the wiring inside the door to rest the door of some sandbags. You’ll need another person at this stage. Remove inner upper and low-er hinge nuts. Remove the door side bolts first, then frame side. Bolt new hinges to the frame, first tak-ing note of where you marked the placement of the old frame-side hinges. Bolt hinges to the door.

Once secure you can release the brake and you should have plenty of slack to pull off the cable from the foot assembly. Use a 13mm or 1/2” box end wrench to compress the prongs of the retaining clip so you can pull the rubber cable away from the foot brake. Remove the wiring har-ness that’s bolted to foot brake and the parking brake switch connector.

Once the foot brake is out you can pull the plastic skirting out by re-moving the upper tab near the firewall. For the access to the low-er hinge nut you need to unbolt a switch box so you can reach it with

Motorspot Inc.

If the alignment is out. You’ll need a 3/8” universal drive to adjust your frame side hinges from the outside when the door is fully open. Use a floor jack and a section of 2x4 wood to keep the door in position when installing and for adjusting the door (position the jack towards the end of the length of the door). Adjusting the door so that it fits right is perhaps the trickiest part, and requires some skill and a bit of luck to dial-in the door so it closes properly. Do not adjust striker pin as a way to compensate a mis-aligned door. It may however need replacing if badly worn.

Reassemble in reverse order.

What is “All Ford Carlisle?” Carlisle Fairgrounds have many car events through the spring and summer, on over 80 acres of property in PA. On the first weekend of June the event is Fords ONLY and there is something for everyone. Last year seen over 2000 show cars, more than 1200 vendors, and many cars for sale.

Is it all cars, what will my family do? Carlisle Productions tries very hard to make their events family friendly. There is a ladies tent set up with non car activities, there is a building with kids activities, and if all else fails, they usually offer shuttle services to the local malls for those not as interested in cars.

VTCI will have a tent to meet club members and take a load off your feet. Carlisle is big, bring comfy walking shoes and come join the fun, there is something for all to see! The special display buildings of Fords, Edsels, Mercurys, and Lincolns are top quality cars, you will see something you have not seen before I am sure!

If you are bringing your car; please register through Carlisle directly. VTCI is not providing judging. If you want your car as part of the show you must register. Make sure you include the VTCI as your club affili-ation. Carlisle will supply a club dis-play tent to us free of charge IF we register 25 cars, so…bring your cars, bring the family, meet some new friends and enjoy a great time!

Friday night from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm is a Thunderbird Only cruise/show sponsored by Family Ford (local deal-ership). Free hot dogs, hamburgers and beverage for Thunderbird own-ers who show their car, also a few trophies are awarded.

On Saturday evening, the VTCI will have dinner reservations at the Fa-mous Sunnyside restaurant in Car-lisle. Inquire at the VTCI Tent for the time of the dinner and direc-tions to the restaurant.

If you have any questions on this event you can visit their website at www.carsatcarlisle.com or contact Jim Cappuzzo at 732-970-0299 after 8 pm est.

The Spirit of Regional Unity

Lou Paliani, President, Vintage Thunderbird Club International

Now there is a term I’ve never heard before. In all my travels through the different regions, the only region that has come close to actual realization of that term is the South Central Region. They ac-tually have a standard that goes to each new regional director to carry on a tradition. “Regional Unity” is a concept we just do not have in the VTCI and it is responsible for much going amiss in every area of functionality of the VTCI. It is so important that building re-gional unity will now be my prior-ity. I need every VTCI Officer and member to completely understand how all the aspects of this concept will go together as every member of VTCI has a part.

The term Regional Unity means pooling regional assets together to successfully accomplish an en-deavor; funding, support person-nel, cooperation, and just plain helping each other out among the chapters. I’ve seen glimpses of it; where I’ve seen it, good things happened for all. The key ele-ment that makes it work is that no chapter is alone. There is a sup-port system to insure that chapter is successful and has resources to draw on other than its own local membership. A chapter can draw on the resources of the region for

what the chapter can not provide. The person that sees to that is the Regional Director. Now I’ve just scared all the regional directors, well….it goes further, no regional director is alone. Let’s take host-ing a regional for an example; I have held the regional directors to a goal of having a regional in every region, every year. There are three reasons for this; 1. No regional…no renewals…VTCI loses members. This is proven by membership statistics. 2. Gas prices are high; members need an event relatively close to home to participate. 3. A regional builds a chapter up mon-etarily and motivationally; activity brings a chapter to life! If a club is not active in conducting events, the biggest question they answer is, “Where do we eat next?”

Here’s how it works: A rotational schedule listing all the clubs in a region must be established by the regional director giving each chapter an opportunity to host a VTCI regional and sent to all chapters. This allows each chap-ter to plan years ahead of time for this event and is fair in choosing the next chapter to host. It avoids unwanted completion and conflict among the chapters. This is an ex-treme negative we do not want. It also allows for improved planning of events on the national level. There is flexibility in this process. Chapters may trade dates should there be an advantage. A chapter may decline the opportunity and it goes to the next chapter on the

list. VTCI is not in the business of making demands on chapters. However, these changes must be coordinated through the regional director as it is the RD’s responsi-bility to manage the rotational list. Once a chapter commits to a date, it is passed to the regional direc-tor and approved by the VTCI Vice President and relayed back to the Regional Director who informs the chapter they have a locked in date and can proceed in planning. This can be as much as three years in advance. This will preclude region-als being scheduled on top of each other as has happened in the past two years. Here is the Key, Region-al Unity; NO CHAPTER IS ALONE. Funding, each chapter in the re-gion will send $50.00 seed money to help the hosting chapter. A list of what the hosting chapter can not provide for the event is sent to the regional director to draw upon assets in the region to help the hosting chapter as; we need a chief judge, 5 people to work the hospitality room and registration table, tally room personnel. The regional director then contacts the rest of the regional chapters to fill what the hosting chapter needs. This is a regional effort and builds a regional identity, spirit and unity. I always wondered why I never saw a regional patch proudly proclaim-ing a person as a member of a spe-cific region.

That is the goal, a spirit of regional unity. I hope by adopting this con-cept, many problem areas we have

had in our event planning will be lessened. Additionally, we need some of the smaller chapters to feel confident enough to hold a regional. To many times I’ve heard “we are just too small”. That tells me that we are not doing our job in supporting our local chapters. We need to pull our resources to-gether and make sure no chapter feels on its own.

Let your regional directors know how you feel about this concept, let me know and any suggestions you may have.

VTCI International Convention

Thunderbird Headquarters

Hi there, Ho there, Whoa there !

The 2007 VTCI International con-vention will held in our little “ol” State of Texas this October 11-14 (Thursday to Sunday). At this point, some plans are still being put to-gether. We know that many of you will want to come earlier than Friday night. At this point, we are tentatively planning a barbecue (Texas style), visit to a Texas size private car museum, judging on Saturday following ample time on Friday to prepare your car. There will be the traditional banquet Sat-urday night of course (but this will be a Texas style banquet), and of course the good-byes will come on checkout Sunday morning.

The convention will be at the Doubletree hotel near IAH (George Bush) airport. That’s good news for anyone flying in as the hotel pro-vides 24 hour free shuttle service. It’s good news for those of you trailering your cars into Houston ... you won’t have to trailer them through really tough Houston traf-fic. It’s probably even better news for those of you driving your Thun-derbirds to the show ... you won’t have to drive them through the re-ally tough Houston traffic.

You’ll find your Texas hosts “darn glad” to have ya’ll ... and we’ll be “plumb-pleased” to try to ac-commodate any special needs or

requests anyone has. Ya’ll holler at us, now, heah?

At the time this note had to be in for the Scoop’s deadline (January 1!) ... we were kickin’ around a visit to the Johnson Space Center way in south Houston, possible trip to the Galveston Flight museum in Galveston, possible trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Sci-ences (with Texas size Butterfly exhibit, IMAX movie theatre, plan-etarium,) etc. but we need your input as to what those attending would like to try to do. So ... if you’re planning on coming ... let us know what you might like us to try to plan for you ... or assist you with if you want to do some ex-ploring on your own. Seriously ... we want to help YOU!

Hotel sleeping room rates are high by Motel 6 standards probably ... but we KNOW the quality you’ll have in this location is top shelf and will be totally refurbished with less than a year on any rejuvena-tion. Sleeping rooms for VTCI will be $85 plus tax. This is LESS than the weekend rate. The banquet supper Saturday night with your choice of chicken, fish, or beef will carry a price of $45 each to include room rental, service, tip, etc. and we KNOW this is very competitive for quality being delivered.

If you have questions or sugges-tions we’re very eager to try to help ... try us
