Dianne Hayes, has recently joined the Roper Gulf Shire team as the Governance Support Offi-cer (GSO). Dianne has lived in Katherine for most of her life, and previously worked at Kathe-rine Town Council as a Records Officer. As Roper Gulf Shire Council haven’t had a GSO po-sition before, we thought we’d take some time to interview Dianne about her role in the Shire. Here’s what she had to say:

Q. What does a GSO do? A. My main role is to support the Councillors of Roper Gulf Shire Council - especially around Or-dinary Council meetings and Finance Committee meetings. I organise Councillor travel and ac-commodation for meetings and I compile the agenda and also take minutes at those meet-ings. Where I can, I also support Local Boards and I’ve now been to Jilkminggan and Numbul-war for Local Board meetings. I’m really looking forward to visiting other communities throughout Roper Gulf Shire and assisting them where I can.

Q. What do you like most about your job? A. Overall I’m enjoying all aspects of my role, but I’d have to say I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the Councillors, Local Board and community members. I also like the challenges my role has been giving me and I find I’m learning new things all the time. In the near future I’m looking for-ward to visiting more communities in the Shire and getting to know their Local Board and com-munity members.

Any one can send in items for the news-letter - you don’t have to be working for the Shire. Your story has to be related to the Shire in some way and not about any-thing that will offend people. Ask your Shire Service Manager if you’re not sure how to get a story in the newsletter. E-mail your story to: [email protected]

Have you got a story ?

Working to keep children’s cultural identity strong is a main focus at Jilkminggan Crèche, along with story telling and learn-ing to read. A parent said, “Small children need to speak better English, learn to think & ex-plore the crèche and what’s there for them. It’s real good that we have a crèche at our community”. “We are working together to keep chil-dren’s cultural identity strong and it is im-portant children can learn to read when they start crawling”, another parent stated.

There’s plenty to say about the School Nutrition Program otherwise known in Bulman as the SNP.

School has been back for five weeks. Here in Bulman we start work at 6.30am to begin break-fast and lunch preparations for school children. We have to begin work early so everyone has their meals and are ready to start the school day at 8am.

The kids start coming in about 6.45am for their meals which keeps everyone busy. In the last five weeks, the wonderful women here at the Bul-man Women’s Centre have made 1535 school lunches and breakfasts which is a huge accom-plishment.
