Introduced in: 1933 Aka: The Flagship of the Martin Line, The Pearl Notable Players: Gene Autry, Neil Young Fact File: This guitar derives its name ‘pearl’ from the fact that it has been made from abalone, a shellfish with a mother- of-pearl interior. During the period 1931-41, only 91 pieces of this guitar were made. This explains why each one of them comes at an exorbitant price. D-45 2 L-5 1 Introduced in: 1950 Aka: The Most Important Electric Guitar Ever Made Notable Players: James Burton, Muddy Waters, Roy Buchanan Fact File: It was the first guitar of its kind to be pro- duced on a substantial scale. It offers an easy-to- play solid body and is considered the Model-T of guitars. It gets its clean, bright sound from two coil pick-ups. Introduced in: 1954 Aka: The Standard Notable Players: David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Bob Dylan Fact File: It is the most played, most popu- lar and most copied electric guitar ever. This guitar came with a lot of novel elements: two cut- aways, the beveled body, three pickups with selector switch, adjustable bridge for each string, pro- tected output jack, etc Introduced in: 1980 Aka: The Stradivarius of the Electric Guitar Notable Players: Carlos Santana, Joe Walsh Fact File: The guitar was orig- inally made for Car- los Santana. He was so impressed with the instrument that he referred to it as “an act of God”. Beautiful, popping wood grain is a PRS sig- nature. The first wood Smith used was curly maple from the drawer-fronts of a friend’s dresser. Introduced in: 1958 Aka: The Modernistic Notable players: Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Dave Davies Fact File: Initially, only 98 models of this guitar were made. This is the reason for the original models being so expensive. The original Flying V was made of korina, a trade name for African limba wood. Initially, the guitar didn’t sell and hence, dealers resorted to hanging them in windows. The sales caught on only a decade later. 3 5 Introduced in: 1952 Aka: The Legend Notable players: Les Paul, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton Fact File: It is made of mahogany with a maple “cap”. The guitar’s body gives a magical sunburst effect, which is a result of book- matching of the wood used. From mid-1957 until 1962, Les Paul humbuckers came with a sticker - ‘Patent Applied For’.
