would help engineering aspirants narrow down on the ‘right’ insti-tute for them, it would also moti-vate the engineering colleges to strive for excellence. The rank-ings survey will particularly help employer companies recruit better talent, as they will be endowed with the knowledge of which college has the capacity to produce indus-try-ready technical talent.

Our main focus in the survey was to analyse the institutes pri-marily on two criteria – how ef-ficient are the institutes in impart-ing quality engineering education to students and what is their brand value among the corporate re-cruiters.

MethodologyA rigorous methodology involv-ing all stakeholders – students, faculty and recruiters – was de-signed for the ranking survey. The research was divided into three phases. In the first phase, a com-prehensive list of engineering colleges was prepared. Subse-quently, a detailed questionnaire was structured with the help of corporate sector experts and prominent faculty members. The expert panel helped establish the various parameters and sub-pa-rameters for ranking and their

importance based on which weights were assigned to each category.

The questionnaire was sent to as many as 1000 colleges across the country among which more than 90 colleges provided objective data. Some of the broad parameters of excellence measured by the survey were: transparency in admission procedure, pedagogy and curricu-lum, faculty, leaning ambience, including infrastructure, corporate networking and brand value, and placements.

The second phase involved tabulation of the received data in-puts. In the third phase, in-depth analysis of the data inputs helped calculate the overall rankings of the colleges. Rationalised research tools were used to arrive at the parameter-wise as well as overall rankings.

While analysing the data, spe-cial importance was given to as-pects like quality of students, cur-riculum, intellectual capital of the faculty, infrastructure (library, recreation rooms, canteens, enter-tainment, hostels, faculty accom-modation and wellness) and indus-try interaction. Marks were then calculated using the weights de-cided by the expert panel for all parameters and sub-parameters.

The questionnaire was sent to as many as 1000 colleges across the country among which more than 90 colleges provided objective data.

The weights given to the differ-ent parameters were; Affiliation (5 per cent), Admission Proce-dure (10 per cent), Academic Excellence (10 per cent), Fac-ulty (15 per cent), Infrastruc-ture (20 per cent), Industry Interface (15 per cent) and Placement (25 per cent). As per the scores allotted to each in-stitute, the colleges were put into six different clusters – A++, A+, A, B++, B+, B.

We have also prepared a list of top 30 colleges, among the IITs, NITs, IIITs and others, on the basis of a perception survey among students, faculty mem-bers and recruiters.

institutes surveyed offer super excellence in the field of engi-neering education. A couple of new emerging institutes have also been included in this year’s top 10 list of colleges. Some of the facets emerging out of the analysis were:

Pedagogy and CurriculumMost of the colleges are revising and updating their pedagogy and curriculum in order to align it with the industry and global standards. The engineering institutes are ad-dressing the issue by modernising the syllabi, increasing the quan-tity and quality of research con-ducted and increased networking between the various institutes and departments.

FacultyThe top notch institutes taking up numerous initiatives to offer a helping hand to the other colleges to bring their programmes and faculty up to the mark. As Devang Khakhar, Director of IIT-B, em-phasizes: “We have been engaged in activities to assist other insti-tutes to excel. There are several initiatives running at the institute which are targeted mainly towards non-IIT engineering institutes such as providing training to their faculty and making IIT-B faculty lectures available for non-IIT students.”

Research EnvironmentInstitutes across the engineering education sector have started fos-tering research work across all disciplines. Although a majority of the students join the corporate sec-tor after doing their graduation or masters, there is a considerable chunk of people who opt for re-search in engineering fields. As the survey responses, many institutes emphasise practical application of their research skills for which they undertake industry consultancy.

InfrastructureAmong the surveyed colleges, most of them have responded in the af-firmative when questioned about upgradation of infrastructure at their campuses. Most of the insti-tutes have maintained high quality infrastructure, which includes laboratories, libraries, computer facilities, residential areas, recre-ational facilities, classrooms and auditoriums.

Industry InteractionMany engineering colleges sign MOUs with various companies to provide their students exposure to the industry and application of their skills even before they embark upon their professional lives. These MOUs cover guest lectures by the engineers from the industry, train-ing courses for students, project works for students, and even setting up special discipline-specific labo-ratories. Engineering colleges also enter into agreements with different companies to attract industry spon-sored R & D projects.

Placements Engineering colleges are witnessing better placement opportunities due to the shortage of manpower in the industry. Many companies are alter-ing their recruitment processes in order to meet the high demand of engineers. Some companies have

started scouting for talent in the second and third tier institutes, apart from the pedigree ones. After our interaction with the faculties and industry experts, we have come to the conclusion that the core competencies developed in all engineering disciplines are con-sidered to be sufficient, although the companies do rely more on their own finishing schools for special-ised industry knowledge.

In the end it seems that colleges offering engineering programmes have come a long way in terms of quantity and quality of education. However, there are still miles to go before all Indian engineering institutes, not only the IITs, IISc and NITs, come up to the global standards.

How to Choose a CollegeHere are some of the most important components that go into making a good institution. Before deciding which institute to join a student must analyse the various parameters.l Accreditation Look up whether the institute is

recognised by NAAC, AICTE or NBA. Accreditation from these organisations assures a student that the programmes have been critically appraised and are valid.

l Curriculum Look at the curriculum of the col-

lege. The number of courses and elective subjects a college offers is vital as it gives a student flexibility to learn what they are interested in.

l Faculty Get detailed information regard-

ing the total number of full-time faculties available at the institute along with their qualifications and subject specialisations. The more the number of faculties with Ph.Ds reflects the quality of teaching in the college. The stu-dent-faculty ratio is also a very important factor.

l Research Output The research output of the fac-

ulty lets a student judge the qual-ity of education imparted at the college. If a faculty member pursues research, it enables him to be updated about the latest happenings in his field, helps him understand the subject better and it may even improve his teaching.

l Infrastructure Some important questions which

must be asked before making a decision are:

How well-stocked is the college library? What is the equipment in the lab? How are hostels and sports facilities?

l Future Prospects A good way to measure the stand-

ing of a college is to find out how the alumni of the institute are faring. A student should try to see how the careers of the alumni have grown over the last 5-6 years to gauge the institute’s quality of education. Study the campus placement statistics to understand what type of companies visited the college, what job roles were offered, median salary, etc.

Infrastructure

The best method for improving engineering education is to utilise every tool available,

including state-of-the-art technology. Computers and the

Internet have expanded the way in which education can be delivered to the students of today.

Today’s networking technologies provide

an invaluable opportunity to the

practice of learning techniques. Computer based telecommunica-

tions can offer enormous

instructional opportunities, but

educators will need to adapt current lesson plan to incorporate

this new medium into all the classrooms.

The only problem is that some of today’s

institutions are hindered by an under-powered

technology based curriculum and, in

order to stay competitive they

must do a better job and get better grades

of integrating.
