HIERARCHY OF IDEAS

Since we cannot process all the data we receive at any given moment, we group information into chunks, coding, storing, and labeling it hierarchically.

There are two fundametal language patterns at opposite ends of the communication spectrum.

The first is The Meta Model and it is known as The Art of Specificity.

The second is The Milton Model (named after its creator, Milton Erickson); and it is known as The Art of Ambiguity.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A CONGRUENT “YES!” What to ask before you begin:

“Trust your intuitive wisdom, would it be okay for you to let go of and to integrate ? Yes or no?” (old undesired behavior) (new chosen behavior)

We must have a Congruent YES to proceed with the following steps.

Anything less than a Congruent YES means there’s likely Secondary Gain — (which meand that the person is holding onto an old pattern because they’re linking it to a secondary benefit).

The process will not work until we transcend secondary gain.

Responses Like:“Yeah, I think so...” “I’d like to...” “That would be great...” or “Uh-huh...”Tell us it’s time to inquire deeper before beginning the process.

Be aware.

Or, did you say something like: · Yeah· Uh-huh· I’d like to· That would be nice· Sure· I think so· I hope so Be present to the energy and physiology beneath your words. Does your communication emanate congruence or incongruence?

Sometimes a part of someone holds on to an old pattern for a reason; because it’s linking some benefit. When this happens it means there’s likely — “secondary gain.” Write down all the ways this behavior has benefited you in the past:




Once you think you’ve exhausted the list, go deeper and get at least two more:

Now, look at your list.

Ask yourself: If you knew with certainty that the highest positive intention of the old behavior would be met in a new, healthful, empowering way; would you be willing to let go of the old behavior right here, and right now today, and be aware of it consciously? Yes or no?

We are looking for a resounding YES!

In the unlikely event it’s a “no” then proceed to re-frame.
