At Brookfield Zoo, we keep track of the activity and behavior of our dolphins. Understanding their movements helps us understand what a dolphin does all day. To keep track of their movements and communications with each other, we partnered with a biochemical engineer at the University of Michigan and scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Our marine mammal care team worked with the dolphins to get them ready and comfortable with wearing a tracing device called a “D-tag,” which is short for “Digital Acoustic Recording Tag.” The device is just around the size of a computer mouse and it attaches to the dolphins with four small suction cups. The D-tag is equipped with an orientation sensor, to know where the dolphins are, a

compass, to keep track of when and how deep they dive, and two mini underwater microphones, which are called hydrophones. These also help us understand how dolphins communicate with each other.

Stop by our Seven Seas exhibit at Brookfield Zoo to see how active our dolphins are. You will most likely see them continuously swimming at different depths and using acrobatic movements like spins, glides, and jumps.
