HETEROTROPHY- A LOOK INTO CELLULAR RESPIRATION
All organisms need a source of energy
and a source of Carbon!
![Page 2: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
WHAT IS A HETEROTROPH?
An organism that needs to CONSUME something for
food/energy
![Page 3: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
WHAT SUBSTANCE IS REQUIRED FOR CELLULAR RESPIRATION TO OCCUR?
Glucose
![Page 4: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
WHERE DOES GLUCOSE COME FROM?
Photosynthesis
![Page 5: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
SOOOO…In order for a heterotroph to obtain energy, plants must undergo photosynthesis,
producing glucose for use in cellular respiration.
![Page 6: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Let’s Look at the Big Picture
![Page 7: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
CELLULAR RESPIRATION PRODUCES ATP. WHAT MOLECULE DO YOU THINK IS NEEDED
FOR CELLULAR RESPIRATION TO OCCUR?
Ummmm…Oxygen?
![Page 8: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
But WAIT! What if there’s no oxygen present???
Hello. My name is
Saccharomyces cerevisae!
My friends call me Yeast
![Page 9: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
ANAEROBIC CELLULAR RESPIRATION.
NO Oxygen is present!
![Page 10: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
STEP 1: GLYCOLYSIS- OCCURS IN THE CYTOPLASM OF THE
CELLGlyco = sugarLysis = split
Glycolysis =The splitting of Glucose
Glycolysis Animation
Let’s look at that again!
![Page 11: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
STEP 2: FERMENTATION
ONLY occurs if Oxygen is not present, causing the pyruvates to
stay in the cytoplasm and ferment, or rearranges it into…
![Page 12: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
LACTIC ACID
That’s me!
And me!
And me!
LACTIC ACID
![Page 13: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
OR ETHYL ALCOHOL AND CO2
Hola! It’s me again…
![Page 14: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
THIS IS CALL ANAEROBIC CELLULAR RESPIRATION, OR JUST
FERMENTATION, FOR SHORT.
Got it? Let’s see what this looks like!
![Page 15: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Aq uila c hrysa e to s
I love Oxygen.
BUT WHAT IF OXYGEN IS PRESENT???
![Page 16: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Whoo hoo! We get to practice AEROBIC
Cellular Respiration!
…which is WAY more efficient!...Let’s learn more !!!
![Page 18: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The function of the Krebs Cycle- to further the breakdown of the products of glycolysis-
releasing CO2 and creating ATP. NAD+ and
FAD+ are reduced to create NADH and
FADH2, these molecules are used during the
next stage…

Step 2: The pyruvates enter the mitochondrial matrix,
and participate in the Krebs Cycle
![Page 19: All organisms need a source of energy and a source of Carbon!](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649dde5503460f94ad7aeb/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Step 3: The Electron Transport System (a.k.a. Oxidative Phosphorylation)
Oxidative Phosphorylation occurs on the inner mitochondrial membrane
NADH and FADH2 (from the Krebs Cycle) are oxidized, releasing H+ that are pumped across the membrane and create ATP…and LOTS of it!
Let’s see what that looks like!
