11 de enero de 2015

Todos ustedes, los que tienen sed,

vengan por agua.

— Isaías 55:1

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize

the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and

dying. We had inherited a practice called “extreme unction,”

from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of death.

The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of faith that

will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the

Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and

while not discarding the “extreme unction” name, made a plea

for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in

danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time

for the sacrament had already arrived.

As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing

contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included

readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade

slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral care languished for

centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling

and effective sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity

completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious

patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church.

Our tradition is far too rich for this sacrament to be celebrated in

such a diminished and ungenerous manner.

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters,

Again we are into a New Year, 2015. As I get older, the years move along faster and faster. As the old

Latin phrase reminds us: “Time flies; remember your final end." But in the meantime, let us live each

day to the fullest. Yesterday is past; tomorrow is yet to come; today is here with us now! Look at it as

yet another gift from God and make the best of it. I wish all of you a blessed, healthy and HAPPY

NEW YEAR - 2015! May God continue to bless each one of you and our parish of All Saints.

Again you have made my Christmas a happy and merry one. I thank you for the many good wishes,

beautiful cards, notes and good eats and drinks (wines) that you gave me during this Christmas Season.

Each one is greatly appreciated.

Today is a special day in our parish as we bless and dedicate the beautiful painting of Jesus and the

Samaritan Woman at the well by artist and parishioner, Catherine Whiteswan at the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

The story of the Samaritan Woman is a story of great awakening and manifestation of the mercy and

forgiveness of Jesus to the woman and to all mankind. The painting will adorn our Reconciliation Room and will serve as a remind-

er to penitents of that mercy and forgiveness for all who are repentant. The Epiphany is a 'manifestation' of Jesus to all nations of

the earth as represented by the Three Kings who came from foreign lands and found the newborn king. We are truly grateful to

Catherine for this beautiful artwork and the parish says: THANK YOU, CATHERINE! Your talents and love and generosity will be

appreciated by many for years to come.

Blessings,

Msgr. Adam

Religious Education Upcoming Events

Religious Formation registration remains open all year. Give

the “light” that guided the Magi to your child, the light is

Christ…He leads to eternity. Religious Formation begins this

week on January 6 at our Public Schools and here at the church

campus on January 11. It is not too late to register your child if

not already with our faith formation programs. Forms can be

found in the foyer of the church or you may register electronical-

ly on the parish website. Also, we take registration at class times

on Sundays and Wednesdays as well as at the following public

schools – Harvard, Love, Sinclair and Travis Elementary, Hamil-

ton and Hogg Middle School. and Reagan High School. We are

a parish that PRACTICES reaching out to share the faith with all.

Bible Study RESUMES on January 11 with the English group

meeting at 9:45 AM and the Spanish at 11:30 AM in the Parish

Hall.

Spiritual Renewal Book Discussion will meet on January 12th

and 19th from 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM in TALC Room 2. “The Four

Signs of a Dynamic Catholic” discussion leader is Dan Schwie-

terman. Extra books are available free while the supply lasts in

the parish office. Are you ready to let God take your spiritual

life to the next level? Do you want to help reinvigorate your

parish? Matthew Kelly promises to take you on a journey that

will motivate you to live out the genius of Catholicism in your

daily life. Let Jesus be reborn in your heart and our world. All

are welcome to join the discussion with or without the book. The

next three-part discussion series is with the book “The Real Je-

sus” from January 26th - February 9th.

Adult Confirmation Program is taking enrollment starting in

January. Please contact Ed. Colbert (English) – edcol-

[email protected] or John Guzman (Spanish)

[email protected] or Dan at the parish office to sign

up. In English and Spanish. It will begin in February with con-

firmation in May.

Volunteer efforts in our formation programs. Volunteer ef-

forts by several dozen parishioners make this possible. Some

serve as teachers and aides, others on committees such as Adult

Ed, with the youth and children for events, and in the office to

prepare materials. We will begin our first confession and com-

munion program in March through the end of June for which we

will need another 10 or 12 volunteers. If you are seeking ways to

help get the message of Christ out, you convert yourself from a

disciple (learner) to an apostle (a doer who goes out to others).

Call Dan or Adriana at the office or email us if you wish to get

moving in the New Year.

cas elementales - Harvard, Love, Sinclair y Travis; Hamilton y

Hogg MS; Reagan HS.

Llamen a Dan o Adri-

ana a la oficina o por e-mail, si desean comenzar en el Año Nue-

vo.

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM

When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with

water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The

same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins

them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the

stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder

religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prom-

inently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he

“knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the

Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had

crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist,

Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded

the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the

waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the bap-

tism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail

humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ contin-

ues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through

these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the prom-

ise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for

Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mis-

sion to proclaim the Good News.
