THE WORSHIP OF GODThe Gathering of God’s People

As we gather, may the sanctuary be filled with the voices of God’s people meeting and greeting one another with the love of Christ.

Welcome Mrs. Leigh Holloway

+ Call to Worship Rev. Will Hasley Adapted from Romans 14:7-9

Leader: We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves.

People: If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord;

Leader: So then, whether we live or whether we die,

People: We are the Lord’s. Leader: For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

People: Praise be to the God of all the saints!

+ Presentation of the Cross and the Light of Christ1

+ Processional Hymn For All the Saints UMH 711Sine Nomine

Invitation

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Time of Silent Confession

Celebration of Our Life Together

Offering of Our Gifts to God Offertory The Lord Is My Shepherd (8:40) Howard Goodall

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me, you will comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in

the house of the Lord for ever, for ever.

In Remembrance (10:55) Jeffrey AmesLux aeterna, Luceat eis, Domine. Turn to me and be gracious, for my heart is in distress. Oh God, my God, why

hast Thou forsaken me? My tears linger at night, but joy comes in the morning light. Lux aeterna, Luceat eis, Domine. Lord, in your infinite mercy, grant them rest. Rest for evermore.

+ Doxology (please turn toward the cross) UMH 94

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below.Alleluia! Alleluia!Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Scripture Lesson Isaiah 25:6-9

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

eStreet Prayers: November

• Congregational: for the opening of the Church on Morgan worshiping space, at the corner of Morgan and Blount Streets. Pray that our downtown neighbors will know the space to be welcoming and inviting as they hear about Christ.

• Local: for the growth of our city and county to be a blessing to our communities, and for our brothers and sisters in need to find safe and affordable housing.

• Global: for the natural disasters that continue to make the news, that God would protect God’s children in our country, our continent, and our world.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTORS:

When I was in seminary, I attended a church in Durham that recited its vision statement every single Sunday during worship. In doing so, we reminded each other who we believed God was calling us to be for the world. I realized very quickly, however, that the words we spoke each week weren’t just words. They weren’t just grand declarations or inspiring rhetoric. Those words actually took on flesh through the lives we chose to lead - because we believed what we were saying.

As we continue to journey through our sermon series, A Year To Commit, I hope you’ll not see your commitments written down on a small pledge card as just words. Instead, I pray you’ll view your commitment to pray more often, to be present, to generously offer your gifts, to be a servant, and to bear witness to God as the means by which God does something significant in you and through you. We take the vow to uphold the church in these ways

(prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness) because we believe what we’re saying. We believe our prayers were not vain words when we gathered to remember the shooting victims in Charleston. We believe our presence mattered when our Congregational Care Ministers sat by hospital bedsides. We believe our gifts were a blessing when we provided tremendous ministry to our children and youth. We believe our service made a difference when nearly 400 of us served our city at the Great Day of Service. We believe our witness was a vehicle of grace each time we gathered for a meal at missional community.

When you bring your pledge card to worship on November 8, may the words written on paper become the commitments lived out through your lives!

Grace and Peace,Rev. Lisa Yebuah

Holiday Tips for Caregivers

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the rest of the holiday season is upon us and for many caregivers this is often a bittersweet time. Happy memories of the past contrast with the difficulties of the present and extra demands on time and energy can seem overwhelming. Finding a balance between rest and activity can help. Here are a few suggestions:

• Recognize that things will be different, and daily routines are often disrupted.

• Set goals, not expectations.• Stay in the present and try not to worry about the

‘what ifs’. Life is what is going on now, so be here for it.

• Keep structure whenever possible. Maintain your exercise routine, sleep schedule, and diet.

• Encourage family and friends to visit, but limit the number of visitors at one time.

• Take time daily for relaxation practice,• Make another connection within ESUMC. In

addition to worship services, Sunday School classes, and study groups, the Stephen Ministry is also available.

• Most of all, be gentle with yourself. Perfection is an ideal, not a reality.

Our Caregiver Support Group is another way to get some tips and words of advice on how to get through the holidays. It meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month, starting at 3:30 p.m. in the parlor. I am also available during the week at 919-832-7227, or through email at [email protected].

Thank you,Matt Frazier
