Whether you have worshiped here for years or are visiting our Episcopal Church for the first time, we are glad you are with us. We invite all to enter fully into worship and to explore the variety of learning, small group,

and service opportunities that are part of our life together. To learn more, visit trinitychurchboston.org and click on New to Trinity,

or contact Mark Kharas, at [email protected], 617-536-0944 x360.

Listening devices for the hearing impaired and large print bulletins are available from an usher.

Note to Parents: We invite you to remain for the entire service. Children’s Ministries and Nursery staff are prepared to accomodate this.

About the Cover ImageAncient Greeks believed that the flesh of peafowl did not decay after death, and so it became a symbol of im-mortality. The eyes on the tailfeathers of the peacock represent the all-seeing eye of God.

On Trinity’s altar, which is modeled on a medieval Byzantine design, we see the symbol used in a fresh way. The mirrored peacocks represent the Eucharistic life (they are drinking the fruit of the vine); both the life we experience through our daily worship and the life which stretches beyond death. The birds are identical; mean-ing that at our altar, we see this life encountering the life still to come, a reconciling of the separation between the worlds which usually feels so absolute. This makes the mirrored peacocks an especially rich symbol for All Saints and All Souls, the great feast where we proclaim that the cloud of witnesses from the past are present with us now and with the saints who are yet to come.

Perhaps it was this peacock symbol that William Butler Yeats was thinking of in his marvelous, complex poem, “Sailing to Byzantium,” where the joyous world of the flesh stands in uneasy harmony with the world of eternity:

Caught in that sensual music all neglectMonuments of unageing intellect.

Yeats imagines himself being transformed into an artificial or clockwork bird, who will be

set upon a golden bough to sing to lords and ladies of Byzantium Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

A Note on Today’s LiturgiesAll Saints is one of the great five Major Feasts in our church year. How can we express the abundance of praise and gratitude we feel to God in this festival day? One way is that we have particular choral music that happens in the course of the liturgy. When the choir sings, they are making our offering to God. Their voices are our voices, their harmony the pattern of the harmonies we are called to live with one another. As we listen, we lend our hearts and bodies, our minds and our souls to this offering. Some people think that listening is passive, but it is only passive if we let it be! So luxuriate in these choral moments today, let your breath relax your body, and join in the offering we make as the people of God, in praise of all the Saints.

As we celebrate All Saints’ Day during our morning services, the choir sings the Mass Ordinary (Gloria, Sanctus, Bene-dictus, Agnus Dei) in a festive choral setting on behalf of the congregation. To learn more about this liturgical practice and other facets of music & worship, visit trinitychurchboston.org/blog/vested-interest.

Hymn in Procession 287 For all the saints (Sine Nomine)

Baptismal Acclamation Blessed be the one, holy and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God’s call to us;One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Creator of all.

Gloria in excelsis Deo from Missa O Quam Gloriosum At 11:15 am. Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611)The translation is found in the Book of Common Prayer, page 324.

Collect of the Day Remain standing.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Reading Be seated. Revelation 7:9-17After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,“Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.“For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 34:1-10, 22 Remain seated. The choir sings the psalm to an Anglican chant by Thomas Norris (1741-1790).

I will bless the LORD at all times; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. I will glory in the LORD; * let the humble hear and rejoice. Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; * let us exalt his Name together. I sought the LORD, and he answered me * and delivered me out of all my terror. Look upon him and be radiant, * and let not your faces be ashamed. I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me * and saved me from all my troubles. The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, * and he will deliver them. Taste and see that the LORD is good; * happy are they who trust in him! Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good. The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, * and none will be punished who trust in him. At the conclusion of the Psalm, children leave for the Children’s Homily, following the Children’s Ministry leaders. They meet under the pulpit.

Gradual Hymn 293 All stand. I sing a song of the saints of God (Grand Isle)

Gospel of Christ Remain standing. Matthew 5:1-12The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

After all have been presented, the Presider invites all to stand, as they are able.

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? We will.

Making & Renewing Baptismal Vows At all services.

Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself ? I will, with God’s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

Offertory Anthem at 9 am Mark Blatchly (b. 1960) at 11:15 am Ernest Bullock (1890-1979)

Give us the wings of faith to rise within the veil and see The saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be.We ask them whence their victory came. They, with one united breath, Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod. His zeal inspired their breast, And, following their incarnate God, they reached their promised rest.
