To encourage and educate young men and women who value service to others, and strive to develop the whole person - in mind, body and spirit. This has been our tradition since the founding of All Souls’ School as a war memorial school in 1920 and St Gabriel’s School for girls in 1921. We now endeavour to bring the spirit of service and the development of the whole person to a new generation.

All Souls St Gabriels School is one of North Queensland’s most respected schools, providing co-educational day and boarding facilities for students from Pre-Prep to Year 12. Located in Charters Towers, the 45 hectare campus is a pleasant mix of recent and historic buildings, housing modern facilities.

The charming landscaped surrounds accommodate the boarding, classrooms and sporting facilities, giving students ample space to thrive in the country nature of our school.

Drawing both boys and girls from all over western and northern Queensland, NT and WA, All Souls St Gabriels School has a diverse population that serves to bring a rich culture of acceptance to the student body. We believe school life is an integral part of shaping the whole person in mind, body and spirit.

The formal curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities at All Souls St Gabriels School offer students an enriching school experience. The comprehensive nature of the programme, unique location and smaller class sizes enable our teachers to encourage a high level of thinking, and engender a deep sense of belonging for the students.

SCHOOL OVERVIEW

Located on the edge of the historic town of Charters Towers, All Souls St Gabriels is a vibrant, co-educational school providing students from Pre-prep to Year 12 with a strong academic programme. Extensive opportunities in sport, rural activities, faith development, music and arts are all set within a picturesque 45 hectare campus.

Developing the Whole Person - Mind, Body and Spirit.

We believe a successful education doesn’t teach students what to think,

but how to think. For more than 90 years the school has endeavoured to remain at the forefront of educational change. From its humble beginnings All Souls St Gabriels has grown to provide its student body with a unique learning environment. In recent years, the school has undergone major refurbishment to ensure that the facilities are continually upgraded to a high standard. From the new Leake Science Building and the Reeves Computer Centre, equipped with the latest technology, to extensive horse and cattle club yards and paddocks, students are offered the best facilities possible.

Flexibility of the mind is required in the 21st century, when many of our current attitudes to work and life face new challenges. However, a strong set of values, good social skills, strength of character and commitment to community are always important.

We pride ourselves on honouring the vision of our founding Headmaster, Reginald Charles Halse, by retaining a strong framework of authentic Christian values within our modern day society.

We recognise the value of balanced learning by placing equal emphasis on our students’ academic, social, physical, cultural, spiritual and pastoral development.

Our staff is a strong mix of young teachers and experienced teachers who have made a long term commitment to our school. Students know their teachers well, and are comfortable in their company.

The Bush Brotherhood of St Barnabas founded All Souls’ School for boys in 1920 as a memorial school dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. Its motto is Servire Regnare (to serve is to rule). The brothers sought to emphasise the point that the sacrifice of so many young Australian lives should not have been in vain, but that new generations should be given the chance to have an honest education.

The following year in 1921, the sister school St Gabriel’s was founded by the Sisters of the Sacred Advent. For a period during the Second World War, All Souls was moved to the banks of the Burdekin River as the school site was used as a military hospital. The girls from St Gabriel’s

were relocated hundreds of miles west to Richmond. By the 1970s co-educational classes were on the increase and by 1990 the two schools merged to eventually become All Souls St Gabriels School, heralding the emergence of a new dynamic school striving to establish an even greater reputation.

The School, through the combined efforts of its Headmasters, teachers and many supporters, has consistently worked to maintain and reinforce the Platonic ideal - an educational philosophy of the development of the Whole Person in Mind, Body and Spirit.

The founding Brother Headmaster (Reginald Charles Halse - later Archbishop of Brisbane) brought this idea from his own school - St

Paul’s, London, founded in 1508.

An ‘ All Souls St Gabriels education’ has become synonymous with an expectation that each student is treated as an individual and is given the opportunity to develop their personal strengths and talents in an environment which is both supportive and nurturing.

By fostering these high ideals, by providing leadership in education and teaching, and by serving the broader community, All Souls St Gabriels continues to justify the expectations of its motto.

A new generation of scholars is discovering the benefits of being a “Souls” boy or a “Gabes” girl in a vibrant, growing school which incorporates the great traditions of its past.

Exceeding expectations, building tomorrow’s leaders.

CURRICULUM

Our goal is to create a learning environment in which students experience success, reach their full potential and feel a real sense of belonging in our school community. There are five stages in a child’s learning development which continue through our two sub-schools, Junior and Senior.

After gaining the foundations in the youngest levels (PP-3), consolidating them through  upper primary (Yrs 4-6), we endeavour to assist our students in making a confident transition from the traditional setting and structure of the Junior School, to greater independence required in Years 7 and 8.

At this transitional stage, we draw upon current research in relation to the middle years of schooling and aim to create a learning environment which gives due consideration to the developmental challenges and changes which occur during these years. Staff aim to be sensitive to the physical, social and emotional changes that the students are experiencing during this time, so that their learning is encouraged in a positive manner. We aim to

guide students in their personal, social and academic development, so that they are well prepared for the experiences of later years. We  provide a core teaching team at these ages who assume, not just responsibility for the key areas of English and Humanities or Maths and Science, but also the pastoral care of students. Other specialist teachers work with these students in Art, Music, Drama, IT, Manual Arts/Design, Health and PE.

Years 9 and 10 is about gaining experiences with a degree of subject choice and flexibility, while providing a foundation of important skills that will be required for studies in Years 11 and 12. All students study English, Mathematics, Humanities and Science for four semesters (Years 9 and 10). Additionally, they are able to also gain

experience in a variety of interests and subjects which may form the basis for deeper study in Years 11 and 12. This is the final stage – gaining qualifications.

A wide range of academic subjects are offered to those who wish to gain Overall Position (OP) eligibility through the study of Queensland Studies Authority subjects, in addition to those who seek more vocational pathways on their journey to life beyond Year 12. Some students will enter universities all over the state with high OP scores; others will have gained certificates and skills in practical subjects. In co-operation with 3 other Charters Towers schools, we are establishing the $6 million Dalrymple Trade Training Centre to assist our more practically oriented students to gain qualifications.

Creating enquirers, thinkers, communicators and risk takers, who are

knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced and reflective.

Although the All Souls St Gabriels community is spread far and wide, our home is in the bonds we forge, no matter what the distance.

Reginald Halse’s vision of educating the mind, body and spirit is symbolised in the architectural icons of the campus. The western end of the campus houses the magnificent Halse Hall. Specifically built as a dining hall, its impressive stained glass window overlooks the students as they enjoy their daily meals. This is the place where the body is fed.

At the centre of the campus lies the Mattingley Resource Centre, which includes the library – the place that feeds the mind.

To the east sits the All Souls Chapel, where students are given the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of God, themselves and the world. The Chapel is where the spirit is fed. At All Souls St Gabriels School we challenge our students to become members of our community, and to play their part, whether it be large or small. That is part of the

reason why many of our students become community leaders in later life.

Currently, past scholars of our school can be found serving as leaders of diverse organisations such as universities, schools, businesses, local government and community and voluntary groups.

The School motto “Servire Regnare” means “To Serve Is To Rule.”

CULTURE & COMMUNITY

We aim to instill a set of values to cope with the modern world and act

as a lighthouse guide to life.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Junior School (PP - 6) is a small group of just over 100 students, purposely capped to provide personalised education and care for the foundation and consolidation years. When young children start school they bring an innate sense of curiosity, wonder and excitement. These powerful

attributes, when complemented with our educational programme and facilities, provide each student with

an optimal learning opportunity. Each student is encouraged to develop intellectually, be considerate of

others and gain a sense of independence and responsibility.

From 2012 All Souls has added a Pre-Prep class in a purpose built Pre-Prep classroom to provide Long Day Care for an even younger generation

of Souls’ students.

Page 9: All Souls St Gabriels School · feeds the mind. To the east sits the All Souls Chapel, where students are given the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of God, themselves

We foster close educational bonds between home and school to ensure each student’s learning needs are carefully considered, catered for and monitored. We have purposely implemented smaller classes to enable teachers to devote added time to each student. This allows our teachers to better appreciate individual learning styles and to closely monitor each student’s learning progress.

Parents / carers are encouraged as co-educators to maintain regular contact with class teachers and the Head of Junior School. The concept of a community of learning is expressed in our rhetoric and practices.

Subject matter at this stage gives students a solid grounding in the basics of education and exposure to diversified areas of learning.

Sport and music also play an important role in Junior School life, with the emphasis on participation and enjoyment – they play sport to enjoy the fun and excitement of activity with friends.

In these early years, we are developing correct attitudes to teamwork and sportsmanship, the essential element for success and enjoyment in future years.

Laying the foundations for academic achievement.

Our Junior School is a small and friendly place, located in a quiet corner

of the campus, where students can enjoy their own space, yet still be an integral part

of the whole school.

We aim to develop the ability to assess, serve and constructively criticise the world in which our

students find themselves.

The curriculum offered by the School and the advice given to students is designed to achieve those

objectives and to develop each individual’s potential. We recognise that learning needs between early adolescence and young adulthood are markedly

different. Our Senior School (7-12) programs facilitate the different stages of each student’s development.

All seniors are taught to respect tradition and to view themselves as the

architects of tomorrow.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Page 11: All Souls St Gabriels School · feeds the mind. To the east sits the All Souls Chapel, where students are given the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of God, themselves

The All Souls St Gabriels secondary program provides a well-rounded education for boys and girls. In early secondary years, the emphasis is on a general education in the competencies of literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and communication. Students study a set of courses compatible with the Key Learning Areas of the Australian Curriculum. It is during these years that they lay the foundations of work habits that will underpin academic achievement in later years. The middle years also provide students with a great

opportunity to establish new friendships, some of which will last a lifetime. Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds, each year group forms a diverse, yet united group who are central to one another’s lives during secondary school.

In Years 11 and 12, students select from an extensive range of subjects which are designed and moderated by the Queensland Studies Authority, as well as more vocationally orientated subjects that lead to specific basic qualifications.

Facilities include five state of the art science labs in our new Ross Leake Science building, Mattingley Resource Centre & Library, art and music facilities, computer labs in the Reeves Centre, extensive  design technology/manual arts facilities, home economics kitchen, the Ena Eden Centre for Effective Learning, the O’Keeffe, Bishops and Burry ovals, the Mills Oval for equestrian activities, the Jim Rebgetz Sports Centre, swimming pool, netball courts, five tennis courts and horse and cattle club yards.

Nurturing our youth towards success.

We pride ourselves on building close relationships and knowledge of each of our students. The Senior School

averages 14 students per class, teachers know each of the students personally and are able to monitor

their progress more closely.

EXTRA CURRICULAR

The extra-curricular dimension of an All Souls St Gabriels education aims to provide students with the opportunity to widen their horizons, and enrich their self-expression.

It is through these extra-curricular activities that the School aims to develop important skills in leadership, performance, creativity, decision-making, cooperation, communication and service.

Whether it’s playing in a jazz band, throwing a javelin, joining expeditions as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, learning how to lead and show cattle or visiting

a retirement village to chat with the residents, all students are encouraged to participate in school and local club sport and musical activities.

With a reputation of sporting excellence and prominent competitive roles in both local and statewide school competitions, All Souls St Gabriels has a very proud sporting history in Queensland. We believe that young people who are physically fit and enthusiastically challenged perform better academically, so all students are encouraged to participate in sporting activities.

Recreational activities include:•Organised weekend recreation

and sports programmes•Regular weekday and evening

school sporting competition in cricket, softball, tennis, swimming, athletics, cross country, netball, touch and rugby league.

•Opportunities to compete individually or as a school team in regional sporting competitions such as rugby union (boys and girls), touch and netball.

Widening horizons, enriching young lives.

Encouraging students to contribute to their community, and igniting lifelong passions

in sport, music and art.

23

Page 13: All Souls St Gabriels School · feeds the mind. To the east sits the All Souls Chapel, where students are given the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of God, themselves

Often invaluable relationships are created for both students and teachers, as the extra-curricular program offers an opportunity to find common ground outside of the classroom.

An enthusiastic teacher running an extra-curricular activity can ignite a passion in sport, music or art that a student may cherish for life.

Cultural and recreational activities include:•Extensive instrumental music

programme with tuition on campus.

•School bands and choir.•Regular activities sessions

with a wide range of options

including Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Horse Club, Cattle Club and service activities.

The School has a major commitment to the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and is one of our major differences to most other schools. The “D of E” is a world-wide award scheme which focuses on personal challenge, rather than competition. It is about working with others, whilst focusing upon your own abilities.

The different sections of the Award give students a chance to experience a wide range of challenges: a Skill, Volunteering, Physical Recreation and an

Adventurous Journey. It has different levels (Gold, Silver and Bronze) for different abilities and gives students a chance to progress and extend. Students set their own goals and work towards them. The Award is a marathon, not a sprint. It is about showing regular commitment and perseverance. Efforts are recognised over time, and achievements are a student’s own improvements.

Each year numerous All Souls St Gabriels students complete their Award and wear their “D of E” badge proudly on their blazer.

Widening horizons, enriching young lives.

BOARDING

Our boarding school is the “heart of the school”.

Boarding at All Souls St Gabriels provides students with a family-friendly Christian home in an educational environment. Many former students recall the camaraderie, lifelong friendships and solid skill set they’ve developed as a result of their boarding days in the “heart of the school.” This is testament to the community spirit that thrives on campus.

We provide individualised care, personal guidance and character development experiences so that each student has the opportunity to flourish with positive self-esteem, independence and compassion. These values help to develop a character that is based upon respect, honesty and trust, tied in with a cheerfulness for life and sense of humour.

All dormitories have recently been refurbished to provide modern, spacious, lodging options in a variety of bedroom areas including 1 or 2 person bedrooms for Seniors, to 1 to 4 bed bays for other year levels.

Dorms are carefully organised in an effort to create a harmonious balance.

More than 25 adults, many of whom are teachers, live on the campus, giving our school the feeling of a small community. Our teaching and boarding staff assist our boarders with their homework. They are not university students “filling in” with little life experience, but qualified teachers and adults who can give expert and real world advice. It’s a rite of passage that the young

boy or girl who enters boarding in their early teens emerges a mature,

confident young person.

27

Page 15: All Souls St Gabriels School · feeds the mind. To the east sits the All Souls Chapel, where students are given the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of God, themselves

Older students are encouraged to support younger students through “buddy” programs which allow for strong bonds of friendship. Young boarders are given extra support by our staff so they feel safe and secure.

On Saturday mornings most boarders are allowed Town Leave to go into Charters Towers in school uniform, to shop for small items and enjoy the atmosphere of a country community on a Saturday morning. The main street is as safe a country town environment as one could find. Nevertheless, staff and prefects keep an eye on younger students. Students enjoy this time of

freedom to be normal children, act responsibly, enjoy conversation and a coffee, buy a few treats or window shop, and be away from school, albeit in uniform, for a couple of hours.

Parents tell us the careful selection of professional, caring and friendly boarding staff is the most important element in making All Souls St Gabriels so desirable as a boarding school. Our campus Recreation Officer keeps an active weekend social activities calendar, from movie afternoons at the cinema to dances, outings, recreational swimming and  a wide range of social sporting activities.

In this way students can spend their weekends enjoying organised activities as well as some time of their own and some time for study. We think a balance of these three types of activity is important.

Each dormitory has a full time Senior Resident who lives in, and is responsible for, the conduct of that dormitory. They are supported by relief staff, our School Nurse who operates a 12 bed/2 ward modern clinic, Recreation Officer, School Counsellor and other on-campus staff, such as our Catering Manager and kitchen staff and laundry staff. Our Head of Boarding oversees all aspects of boarding life.

Parents are often surprised to hear that their young child is capable of keeping their room tidy – even

folding clothes and putting them away!

OPPORTUNITIES

All Souls St Gabriels is blessed with a perfect climate, relaxed lifestyle and the safety of a small country town.

Whilst we’re a small school in comparison to capital city standards, our adaptability in providing relevant subjects and facilities aligned with modern day requirements is impressive, providing our students with many opportunities.

A unique country perspective assists many of our students with the challenges of rural professions,

from working for rural companies to running major cattle stations. Yet, we also have a proud tradition of strong links with Australia’s major and most prestigious universities, providing the right stepping stones for city and international careers.

Everything about All Souls St Gabriels brings balance to our students. From smaller class sizes to the refreshing spaciousness of our country campus, the school is focused on close teaching bonds between students and teachers, fostering positive learning

environments and nurturing the right pathway for each student. With 45 hectares of school grounds, many boarders have the luxury of maintaining the country lifestyle they’re accustomed to. The cattle yards provide reminders of home and important experiences in rural studies. Some students even choose to bring their horse to campus with them.

Most importantly, the country space provides a time out to enjoy one’s own company, to appreciate the peace and to reflect inwardly.

Realising the difference of a country education. All Souls St Gabriels has an ideal balance to prepare students for city or country futures.
