Virtual Sunday Services...

11:15 Virtual Service: "The Now and the Not Yet” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

Living in the last days of the world is always complicated. Whether it’s a pandemic, or a climate extinction event, or the arrival of the Messiah, or the inauguration of a new president, that in-between time, waiting for the thing that is about to happen, is confusing, and full of uncertainty. Is Easter morning the end of a story, or the beginning? How are we supposed to know? And if we don’t know, how do we make any sense out of

11:15 Virtual Service: “Hidden Leadership: Early Christian Woman” Dr. Ally Kateusz

Early Christian art portrays Mary and other women clergy serving as deacons, presbyters, priests, and bishops. How does this new evidence that Mary was remembered as a powerful role model for women leaders -- women apostles, baptizers, and presiders at the ritual meal -- change our understanding of Christianity in the modern world? Dr. Ally Kateusz is a Research Associate with the Wijngaards Institute of Catholic Research in London, a recipient of the Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza New Scholar Award, and the daughter of our member Jane Gilbreath.

The Forum has been postponed for the month of April.

11:15 Virtual Service: "Earth Day, Past and Future” Rev. Kendyl

Gibbons

Those who are old enough to remember the first Earth Day celebrations 50 years ago, might also remember the ad campaign that declared “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” In fact, there is no fooling nature -- its laws are those of natural consequence, and we are watching them play out across the globe as the pandemic runs its course, even as we do everything in our power to thwart its destruction. In this setting,

M aybe only Boomers like me remember when the Federal Broadcast System used to run periodic

tests of their emergency capabilities. They would interrupt the normal program with a high-

pitched tone, and a screen announcing that “This is only a test. Had this been a real emergen-

cy, you would have been given instructions of where to go and what to do.” Well, friends, this is a real emer-

gency we are in right now, but it is also a test. It is a test of, among other things, the work that we have done

to build community and to nurture spiritual growth here at All Souls. It is a test of whether our theology of

interdependence and human dignity, of the quest for truth and justice, can really sustain us and give us

courage when the going gets tough.

It is fairly easy to see how we are doing on the Community portion of the test. So many folks, on the staff, among the lay leadership, and

among our dedicated volunteers, are doing huge amounts of innovative work to keep us connected to each other, and to reach out to our

most vulnerable members. We are in the process of figuring out how to do church differently for the time being, which will surely change

how we do church even after the crisis has passed, in ways we do not yet know. We are all trying hard to keep each other safe from

illness, while sustaining our church institution to be there for us in the future. One aspect of this community test will be figuring out a

budget, and an annual meeting process if we cannot gather in person. We ask for your patience, understanding, and participation as we

navigate these unprecedented challenges.

Which brings us to the second part of the test -- Spiritual growth -- which will be more difficult to assess. As I write this, we are in a

sweet spot of initial enthusiasm, when it feels natural to be generous, and uplifting to make small sacrifices for the common good. Yet the

restrictions of stay at home orders and the shut down of many accustomed parts of our lives is quickly going to become irksome, and

more importantly, it will not visibly resolve the underlying anxiety. Nothing we do will turn back time and make the Corona virus go away.

So, the time will come when we start to feel not only deprived, but cheated, as if our giving up good and important things didn’t really

achieve anything. We can slow the spread, which is the point, but we still have to endure the course of this pandemic -- nothing can stop

that. What is now generalized wariness and caution will precipitate into specific grief for those who sicken and die, and to exhaustion

for those who are called to provide care. This whole thing is going to get harder, soon.

The core of spiritual maturity as I understand it lies in self-awareness, which includes the awareness that we are affected by forces we

don’t always directly perceive. Just as a person who is without symptoms and feels fine can in fact be getting ill and infecting others with

no idea of their status, so it is also true that we each carry some level of the fear and grief of our larger social environment, whether or

not we recognize it. Unacknowledged, these forces can move us in ways we don’t understand; they can make us short-tempered, or

demanding, or paralyzed, or defiant of common sense. They can lure us to numb ourselves through various kinds of addictive behavior;

they can make us push others away who try to reach out to us; they can fill us with self-pity.

But these systemic forces are far more powerful when they operate unreflectively, below our threshold of self-awareness. Once exposed

to the light of day, they become merely one partial truth about the situation and ourselves that we can take into account, and make

choices about. We can choose not to be short with others, even though it is tempting, when we recognize that all of us are anxious and

edgy. We can choose not to pour another glass of pinot when we are able to acknowledge how truly frightening our situation is. That self-

awareness -- that we are not, in fact, special characters, but rather move with the tides of our common life -- is a function of the spiritual

maturity that we seek to cultivate as a faith community of memory and promise. It is the good news which our heritage proclaims; that we

are not alone in either our struggles or our triumphs. May that wisdom guide us through the perilous journey of this crisis time, so that

we may find ourselves glad and wise and whole as the future beyond these days unfolds.

RE Programs, RE Board, Sunday Morning Schedule...

Rev. Judith Cady

The Religious Education Board Meets The Second Sunday of Each Month Anyone is welcome to attend.

Children & Youth Sunday Morning Schedule 10:00—12:15 Nursery service is provided for babies and toddlers. 10:00—11:00 A time of creativity, conversation, and community for all ages. 10:00—10:30 Children’s Choir, grades 1-6 lower level. 11:15—12:15 Sunday School classes for all ages to explore our Unitarian Universalist faith and principles through storytelling, discussion, creative experiences, and service projects.

Religious Education Programs for All Souls Families Middle School and High School Youth

We believe that it is so important for our youth to remain connected with their friends while the church is closed due to the coronavirus. We have set up a

google group for this purpose: “Google Hangout, All Souls KC Youth RE.” All of our youth have been invited to join the group. The group will meet with a video connection at 12:30 pm every Sunday. Our RE teen teachers will facilitate the

group to share joys and concerns and to discuss topics of interest.

Religious Education Programs for All Souls Families

Preschool-Elementary Children

Reverend Judith Cady and Melanie Jackel are working on Sunday school lessons for you All Souls’ parents to share with your child(ren) until the church reopens. We have decided to work from a UU curriculum, Free to Believe, that was created to nurture the emotional, social, and spiritual life of children. We will be using the Unitarian Universalist principles as starting points for exploring values, beliefs, and what it means to be Unitarian Universalist.

Expect to see an email from Melanie ([email protected]) each week with the lesson. At church, we have different lessons for each grade grouping. However, as we attempt virtual Sunday school, we are offering a single lesson each week that is intended to be relevant for preschool through 6th grade so that families only have one lesson to guide each week and families will be encouraged to work together. Look for the lesson on Saturday. It's an experiment! Once we get going, please let us know how this new format is working (or not) for you.

The lessons are designed with the goal to teach appreciation for each other’s similarities and differences and that our community is a place where all are valued for who they are. The “community” aspect of this endeavor is where planning for these lessons becomes a challenge. Naturally, while practicing responsible social distancing, community at this time could mean “all the people living together right now.” However, we think it would be enjoyable to expand our community to fellow All Souls families via social media. If this interests you, please join us on Facebook where we already have a private group called “AllSoulsKC Families with Children”. This is a place where we can share the art pertaining to the les-sons our children make, or a child demonstrating the chalice reading, or any of the other countless ways to maintain a church connection for our children.

Wishing you all the best! Stay safe and healthy!

Planned Giving Program...

Thank you to all the wonderful All Souls members who participated in the planned

giving program from the UUA last year – the Wake Now Our Vision Legacy

Challenge. In this program, the UUA committed to match a percentage of new

legacy (i.e. planned giving) gifts to the UUA or the congregation. The UUA

matching funds came from the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock. The Legacy

Challenge program generated more than $111 million in new legacy gift intentions

across Unitarian Universalism.

Several members of All Souls generously stepped up to this challenge and

included All Souls in their estate planning. The legacy gift intentions to All Souls

UU Church totaled an estimated $662,250 and generated $16,225 in matching

funds from the UUA. These matching funds are in the process of being

distributed. The first payment of $4,056 was received in October 2019 and three

(3) more payments will be received between now and July 2020.

The UUA cannot release the names of the legacy intentions on which our matching

amount is based but our records show these generous members made new legacy

gifts. These names will be added to our Heritage Society board in the area near

the elevator on the first floor. Thank you to these wonderful people and all the

amazing members of our Heritage Society!

The Coolest Thing, All Souls Gets Greener, 2020 Earth Festival...

The “Coolest Thing” from the COM

We have transferred our church data base to a new program that

will allow us to customize the way we use it, so we can more

easily access and use the data we have stored. It will easily allow

us to avoid duplication, for example; it will allow more flexibility;

we can store more information that the congregation wants the

church to know, it is more user-friendly, and will match our needs

better. The existing data has been transferred over successfully

and staff are beginning to use it. We appreciate the research that

Andrea, Mark, Le Aúndra, Marcia, Sherry, and Angie did as well as

the work that went into setting it up and transferring the data.

2020 Earth Festival

In honor of Earth Festival 2020, All Souls is holding its

annual plant sale and providing tours of the Simpson House,

Butterfly, and Pollinator Gardens. The Garden Tours,

provided by long time All Souls gardener and landscape

enthusiast Chuck Downing, will be offered on Saturday,

4/18/20 at 11 A.M. and at 1 P.M. There will also be a

Sunday, 4/19/20, tour provided at 1 P.M. The tours include

the mature formal gardens behind Simpson House as well

as the Butterfly and Pollinator gardens on the East Side of

All Souls. The Green Sanctuary Plant Sale, offered from 11

A.M.— 1 P.M. on Sunday, 4/19/20, is organized in partner-

ship with this year’s Plant Sale proceeds recipient,

Congregation KOL AMI devotes the proceeds from the plant

sale to support their work in the Manheim Food Garden.

Seedings from the Green Sanctuary plant sale are locally

sourced, sustainably cultivated, and include vegetables,

herbs, and ornamentals.

Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, the four-

week test of the use of China mugs at All Souls

during February and March 2020, has shown that

we can reduce the use of disposables. The china

coffee/hot beverage mugs will continue to be avail-

able for use by members and guests. Volunteers

and staff will wash mugs in the dishwasher to

assure they are properly sanitized. The Green

Sanctuary Committee will coordinate volunteers to

assure a supply of clean mugs are available. It is

hoped that people will use the china mugs; however,

for those times a take away is needed, the

disposable coffee cups and lids the church supplies

are now made of compostable material.

Green Sanctuary Committee...

SUSTAINABLE HOUSING TIPS

From the Green Sanctuary Committee

Consumerism and Advertising

Merriam-Webster defines consumerism as the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is econom-

ically desirable. Advertising and branding are used to encourage people to buy products. Products can

be a good thing if they goods they for provide basic needs, are sustainably produced, and improve the lives

of the consumers without negatively affecting other people.

However, consumerism can have a negative impact on environmental issues such as climate change,

species extinction, resource depletion, and growth of landfills. Advertising often encourages consumers to

take an “out of sight, out of mind” approach to these issues.

Digital Marketing experts estimate that most Americans are exposed to around 4,000 to 10,000 advertise-

ments each day. Many of these advertisements are for products, which do not significantly improve our

lives. Many products produced are with non-renewable resources and end up in the landfill after few (or

no) uses.

Train yourself to be more aware of how advertising is affecting you. Ask yourself the following questions:

Did you know you had a need for the product before you saw the advertisement?

What emotions is the ad targeting? Is the ad implying that if you buy the product you

will have more friends, be more attractive, etc? Is the product likely to deliver these

rewards?

What impacts will the product (including packaging) have on the environment?

Is the product well made? How long will it last? Is it designed to be obsolete in a short

amount of time?

Learn to distinguish between needs and wants. If the product is a want, place it on a 30-day list to consid-

er before you make the purchase.

Our 7th Principle:

Respect for Interdependent Web

of all existence of which we are a part.

Annual All Souls Auction—SPRING FLING...

Mark your calendar – the annual All Souls Auction will be re-evaluated sometime in May. This is our biggest fund raiser of

the year, last year we raised over $21,000 on a cold wet March evening and we expect that this year will be even more

successful.

For those of you who have not participated in the Auction in the past, it’s a lot of FUN with many ways to join in. Admission

is $10 per person (which includes one beverage of your choice). Beverages include soft drinks, beer and wine.

Doors open at 5:30 with a silent auction and tasty hearty appetizers. Last year we had more than one hundred silent

auction items and we expect this year to be even bigger and better. Last year’s silent auction items included a stay at a

house in France, a week at a condo in Mexico and a weekend at a lovely house on a lake in the Ozarks. There are silent

auction items for all budgets, including some under $20.

The live auction starts at 6:30. We will have a real live auctioneer (the incomparable Doug Nelson) and the bidding gets

interesting and lively. Last year we had twenty-five live auction items, mostly dinners and casual get-togethers hosted by

your friends at All Souls. Many of us plan our social calendar around our auction dinners!

And there is a wine raffle. Buy a raffle ticket ($5) and get a chance to win one of more than twenty bottles of wine. You do

not have to be present to win.

Child care (with pizza) will be provided. Please let us know if you plan to bring children.

Want to get involved? Come to the auction, join your friends for a great evening of food and socializing. Put an item in the

auction. Can you host a dinner or other event? Do you have art, vacation lodging or an item to put in the silent auction?

Do you have tickets to a local sporting or theatre event that you will not be able to attend? Do you know a local merchant

who would be willing to contribute a gift certificate?

Can you help; With setup on the day of the auction? Cleanup and restoring Bragg back to Sunday-morning condition after

the auction? Help with appetizers?

Stop by the Auction table in the lobby on Sunday mornings (starting March 1) to pick up a donation form, buy a ticket to the auction and get tickets for the wine raffle. (Auction Donation Forms need to be returned to Bob Miller at [email protected])

Endowment Committee, The Humanist Book Club...

Quarterly Message from Endowment Committee

Our returns for 2019 were good. The UUA Common Fund’s annual, net composite return rate was 18.7%. We are pleased with this performance and most especially pleased to have the investment expertise the UUA Common Fund provides. We moved our money there in April 2019. The year-end balance in the discretionary fund is approximately $1.17 million. Last year we contrib-uted just over $55,000 to the church’s general operating budget, funded 50% of the membership coordinator cost, and paid for the new security system. These distributions are in line with the mission of the Endowment. Next year our distribution to the church will be just over $53,000. The an-nual distribution is lower because the calculation for it is based on the average principal balance, and the $400,000 gift from Endowment to the church in 2018 for construction costs reduced the principal balance. Quick reminder – we take gifts at any time, during your lifetime or after. We haven’t had a gift for a while; these funds are principal to us and the basis for future growth. So, if you’re a little flush with a tax refund, required IRA distribution, or something else, please consider sharing some of your funds with Endowment! If you have any questions about this information, please contact Becky O’Connor.

Thank you.

Board of Trustees Transitions, Introducing Frank Stevens...

Board of Trustees Transitions

Our Board President, Raegan Buatte, has been forced to step down from this position due to family health concerns. We thank her for her service, and wish her and her loved ones healing. Vice President Andrea Jonson will be filling in for the remaining two months of the program year, while Raegan completes her term as a regular board member.

Also, our Board Secretary, Tracy Van Quathem, is suffering from personal medical issues, and Russ Feldhausen will fill in for her for the remainder of the year. We thank Tracy for her work as secretary, and wish her quick healing.

We are fortunate to have talented, dedicated, and flexible leadership, so that our community continues to be well served in spite of these changes. Please support our Board of Trustees with your appreciation.

Introducing Frank Stevens

Photos by Frank Stevens, member of All Souls, says, “I make photographs because I can, anywhere, any-time, at my convenience. All I need is my camera and lap top computer. I have no plan, no method, just a need to be in motion and the desire to capture lightning in a bottle. My writing, storytelling, photo-graphs, woodworking, music, it’s all the same motivation, the same process. My photographs have never had any other purpose than pleasing the eye. I enjoy and appreciate seeing my best work dressed up and displayed on a gallery wall."

Frank is a storyteller, a writer, a woodworker, and musician. Crafting unique frames to enhance his pho-tos, he creates an integrity of image and frame. This show will be hung once it is safe to open the church with a reception scheduled at that time.

Thanks for joining PeaceWorks’ Annual Meeting...

Thanks for joining PeaceWorks' Annual Meeting

All Souls Friends,

Many thanks to you who attended our March 1 PeaceWorks Annual Meeting at Simpson House. Some of you also joined in the raffle of our quilt; it went to a sister who staffs the halfway house for women from prison in KC, MO, the house connected with Journey to New Life at 31st and Troost. You all were generous--thanks a bunch! And FYI: COVID-19 has cancelled plans for mid-April events at All Souls with two sisters (Ardeth Platte and Carol Gilbert) who helped move the UN toward adopting the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Finally, even when we can't reach out and shake hands, we can reach out our hearts--thanks for doing that!

Henry Stoever of All Souls and PeaceWorks.

The

NeedleHearts Group

We will miss seeing everyone in April as our meetings are

temporarily postponed . We hope you have a supply of yarn

to keep you busy. Please continue to make your 9 x 7

blocks. If you get bored with that remember we hope to

make hats and scarves for the children of Carver for the

next school year. As Sue said we should try to make this a

time of reflection. Read a book you have been postponing,

try a challenging knit or crochet project, and reach out to

family and friends by phone, snail mail or Email.
