ALL STAR RECOMMENDS – Daredevil: End of Days HC

He uttered one word as he laid dying, a single clue, andirresistible bait for a search into the past for its truth. It is anobituary, yet also an eye toward the future for the legend of Matt Murdock, Daredevil.

Equal parts recollection of the great moments in Ol’ hornhead’shistory, as well as a startling primer for those looking to seewhat all the fuss is about, Daredevil: End of Days straddles theline between love letter to the past and bold reminder of thecharacter’s timeless ability to attract ‘new’ acolytes.

of DD in one place.

Primary credit has to go to writers Bendis and Mack however,as they have managed to create and give voice to a story thatseems without creators. The pair prove to be invisiblethroughout, and are so attuned to the voices of Ben Urich,Elektra, Foggy, Peter Parker, Frank Castle and Matt himself that it feels like a historical excavation and recreation of pre-existing people. In his novel On Writing, author Stephen Kingstates his belief that all stories are hidden and it is the writer’s

job to merely unearth and polish them; to give new life tosomething long buried, and to be honest. Daredevil: End of Days feels the most true example of that idea that I’ve readrecently.

With Frank Miller absent it might have seemed this was afoolish attempt to capitalize on his early (and most heralded)work on the character in some sort of nostalgic cash grab, but itboth transcends and honours his work while simultaneouslybeing a celebration of what has been done since without ego or highlight upon any individual creative voice.

A modern masterpiece, and the best incarnation of ThePunisher since Mr Ennis held the pen… Even then, wow.

It’s Melbourne Writers Festival time from next week and onSATURDAY the 24th, there are a bunch of comics themed

events that y’all might be interested in. Okay, I’m in some of them so that makes it potentially more interesting or less, depending on you...

UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Saturday 24th August at10:00am. Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. Tixhere: http://tickets.mwf.com.au/session2_mwf.asp?sn=Under+Construction&s=649

My $1 question is: when will The Fight come out? Or, how’s TheFight coming along? Well, at this session I will show you what itis, where it’s at and maybe guess when it’ll come out. It’s takinga long time for a lot of reasons, but it is happening and it isgoing to go places you can’t imagine if you’ve read TheSacrifice . Joining me will be Sarah Howell, who is working on abook about Enid Lyons and the three men she knew who diedin office: her husband, Joe Lyons; John Curtin and Harold Holt. One is an accident, two is a coincidence, but three is aconspiracy. A remarkable woman by a remarkable talentfeaturing in what is certainly the GN I am most eagerlyanticipating. Also on stage will be Mirranda Burton, another

amazing talent - witness her book Hidden - but now working ona wordless book that is made up from her exquisite hand-cutLino prints. It’s all about the 99% perspiration folks, so bring atowel.

DRAW, DRAW FASTER! Saturday 24th August at 4:00pm.Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. Tixhere: http://tickets.mwf.com.au/session2_mwf.asp?sn=Draw%2C+Draw+Faste r%21&s=482

Picture this (clue: imagination): two easels, blank paper andsharpies in a rack. Two blokes and two sheilas who also

happen be illustrators and cartoonists are confronted with thedreaded blank page and are thereby compelled to fill it withspontaneous comic story-making on the fly, directed by theman who can make something out of nothing, sensible: BernardCaleo. I, along with Alexis Sudgen (the delightful My SistersVoice also being launched at Skinny Arse below), DavidBlumenstein and Lesley Vamos (ex Disney animator and prolificillustrator) will battle to make nothing sensible! Probably goingto be pretty hilarious. If that doesn’t happen I’ll show my bum.

SKINNY ARSE COMICS LAUNCH. Saturday 24th August at5:30pm. ACMI TheCube. http://tickets.mwf.com.au/browse2_mwf.asp?

k=skinny+arse&a2752=&sd=

Following the success of the Skinny Arse launch at last yearsfestival and in the spirit of Big Arse, this year we launch four new comics onto the Melbourne literary scene and they’re alldebut books too! Firstly, there is Alexis Sudgen’ delightful, wistful My Sister’s Voice, a tale of a lighthouse keepers yearslong search for her sister supposedly lost at sea. Then there isLauren Hills and Ceili Braidwood’ Good Hordekeeping whichyou have to imagine as good housewife’s guide to etiquette indealing with zombies. Yes. Then there’s Caitlin Major andMatthew Hoddy’ Space Pyrates , a collection of a web comic

featuring, un-muscled hipster couple who nevertheless are avery dynamic duo roaming about space; think Jack Sparrowcrossed with Douglas Adams. Then there is the fascinatingNeomad, a science fiction dreaming conjured up by Melbournechap Sutu collaborating with 30 kids from the Leramudgu areaof the Pilbara. Yep, they created and coloured it. It’s actually an

There are several other comics events that will be worth your while to attend too and since it’s all on the same day, make aday of it!

Marjorie M Liu is well known to many fans of speculative fictionand also to those who read the Astonishing X-Men comic. Herethe spotlight is shone on her talking to Joey Morris of Non-Canonical about what it is to work with a franchised intellectualproperty such as this one. Obviously being a woman in a maledominated domain will matter at some level, but hopefully we’llget insight into the machine that isMarvel/Disney/Pixar/Lucasfilm. Will we see X-men team up withthe Incredibles and Pocahontas to fight Darth Maul? And whyare they always bloody fighting? Can’t they all just get along?

GETTING TO THE POINT. Saturday 24th August at2:30pm. Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. Tix here:http://tickets.mwf.com.au/session2_mwf.asp?sn=Getting+to+the+Point&s=503

Cartoonists Andrew Marlton and Judy Horacek talk to JasonChatfield make a living making fun of everything around them inblack lines on paper. Nice gig, but it must be hard to getinspired to punchlines and gags every day, so in this session, apparently they’re going to tell us that being funny ain’t all it’scracked up to be, but they’d be cracked if they were to doanything else. I understand completely, as I’m a cracker who’salso cracked, but I don’t take crack.

Lastly, my erstwhile friend Phil Bentley will be manning the Australian comics table in the book fair in the atrium atFederation square on this day, the 24th, but also the following

Saturday, the 31st August, when I will be present as well for thewhole day. If there are holes in your collection, then this is thetime and place to get them filled. So you need a filling from thedentist? bugger that, get your comics fill instead: cheaper andless painful.

A DIY superhero shout out and abreath of fresh air in this era of modern block busters.Writer/director and star Jason Trost (The FP) has created adark thriller that “doesn’t just deconstruct superheroconventions, it tears them to shreds” (RennBrown, CHUD.com )"

DC VILLAIN MONTHUPDATE!

What is it they say about the best laid plans?

So the other day DC issued comic store retailers a pressrelease concerning their Villain Month promotion running thewhole of September. It seems the demand for the 3D covershave been overwhelming and they won't have the stock to fillthe orders for these titles in full. Allocations will occur and varyfrom store to store.

In place of the stock DC may not be able to fill, they are nowoffering and filling the remaining orders with a standard cover of each title that will be $2.99 US rather than $3.99 US. Thesestandard covers will also be considered FIRST PRINTS .

At this point we are still in the dark as to how the allocations willeffect our stock levels. We hope to fill the majority of orderswith the 3D covers but at this stage can not guarantee it. Whatwe will be doing over the the next couple of days is trying our best to get in contact with anyone who has put themselvesdown for these titles to see how they feel about getting either the 3D, standard or if the case calls for it, a mix of both covers.

As for anyone that went for our pre-paid set deal of all 52issues for $275, obviously we are happy to offer a total refundor a swap for a pre-paid set deal for all 52 issues with thestandard covers for $200.

In the end we can only offer our humblest apologies and thankyou for your patience and understanding in this matter that hasbeen taken totally out of our control.

As more information comes to hand we'll be sure to keep youinformed.

Team All Star.

ALL STAR RECOMMENDS:

TRILLIUM #1

Trillium is the new Vertigo sci-fi tale from creator extraordinaireJeff Lemire. It finds dual protagonists from vastly polarised pointsin earth’s history finding common ground in a specific joinconnecting time with place.

The first issue opens well via an ominous video playback, whichestablishes a curious and desperate situation related to the fate of

the universe! Our 3797 protagonist is Nika, a botanist in the spiritof the Avatar-esque, exploratory, non-military type. Her 1921flipside is William Pike, a traumatised World War 1 veteran on anill-fated expedition for riches in the jungles of South America. Bothreek of desperation for different reasons, with Pike stumblingacross his fate by chance, while Nika’s mission is one of greater

purpose.

While the parallel stories converge geographically, Pike's 1921explores themes of greed and hubris while the earlier 3797 portionintonates the ignorance and dire result of such human based folly. The future tale seemingly becomes an attempt to remedy past

mistakes at an unexpected mid-point, which connects to theTrillium resource of the title, a flower with powerful properties andunobtanium-like value.

As sole creator, Lemire is in total control and both the visuals andthe written story merge seamlessly. The future heroine’s journallogs serve to fill in the back story really well, as her search for theTrillium allows her to express her fears and concerns about animpending extinction level alien threat to mankind. The 1921soldier’s state of mind is expressed through his past on the

battlefield, with the violence and horror he witnessed haunting himin gruesome ghost-like recollections. Pace wise, it takes it’s time and doesn’t resort to immediate andshocking twists or revelations, with the end seeming an inevitable

beginning for the series, while also a logical end point for the issue. Both worlds and their mysterious meeting point, core charactersand their motivations are all clearly established too, right before aclassically balanced ellipsis sets up the second issue.

A great start, and more promising original sci-fi goodness fromVertigo! Verdict: All Star Recommended
