COLORADO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

Who We Are Colorado Christian University has a century-long legacy of serving students who desire a challenging, Christ-centered education. Located in Lakewood, Colorado, CCU was founded in 1914. In just over 10 decades, what began as a one-room school with two students and a single teacher has become the premier interdenominational Christian university in the Rocky Mountain region.

The College of Adult and Graduate Studies (CAGS) at Colorado Christian University offers over 90 undergraduate, graduate, licensure, and certificate program options, with nearly all available completely online. All courses incorporate a Christ-centered worldview — integrating high-level academics with timeless faith — and are designed specifically for adult learners.

CAGS and CCU Online provide students with several options for accelerated degree completion, including flexible transfer credit policies and opportunities to earn college credit for life experience.

More than 7,000 adult students are currently enrolled through CCU Online or attend on-site classes at one of several Colorado locations.

CCU produces engaged, ethical graduates ready to change the world. CAGS students from all or no-faith backgrounds are invited to be a part of the CCU community — and discover how all things are possible.

CCU’s College of Undergraduate Studies (CUS) enrolls more than 1,400 students in traditional programs on the University’s residential campus in suburban Lakewood, a suburban community 10 miles west of downtown Denver with easy access to the nearby Colorado foothills.

CUS offers more than 50 programs in business, liberal arts, music, sciences, and pre-professional programs for traditional-age high school graduates and transfer students. Undergraduate students enjoy hundreds of activities beyond academics, including Best of Colorado trips, Division II NCAA athletics, intramural sports, student-led ministries, and overseas missions.

The CCU Cougars compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), one of the largest and most competitive conferences in the nation. Men’s sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and track and field. Women’s sports include: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball.

• CHRIST-CENTERED

Education Unapologetically Christian — that’s what we aim to be at Colorado Christian University, that’s one thing that sets us apart from other universities and colleges. Other schools may be distancing themselves from Christian distinctives, or apologizing for their Christian heritage. We don’t. We are leaning into it. But before explaining what we mean by this tagline, let us tell you what we don’t mean by the words “unapologetically Christian.”

WHAT WE DON’T MEAN We don’t mean arrogantly Christian. That is, we do not wish to imply that we are always right, or that we know it all. In fact, no sane Christian would say that they do. We are quick to confess that we are finite and we serve an infinite God who, though He has revealed himself, is still much greater than we can comprehend, and life is more mysterious than we can fully understand.

Also, we don’t mean narrowly Christian. CCU teaches students to think. We want them to engage in rigorous study and ask hard questions. We want them to examine other views, even as we robustly teach from a Christ-centered perspective. We love science, philosophy, debate, learning and the life of the mind.

Nor do we mean uncaringly Christian. We are compelled by Christ to love our neighbors and respect all people because they are made in the image of God. We teach our students the importance of what we call “convictional civility.” We have friendships with people of other faiths and no faith. We are devoted to the common good. We aim to produce good citizens.

Finally, by “unapologetically Christian” we do not mean perfectly Christian. We are far from it. We are sinners who need a savior and who want to follow faithfully after Christ. But we don’t do it like we hope to. We aspire to be a Christian university, but we have not arrived.

WHAT WE DO MEAN If that is what we don’t mean by the phrase “unapologetically Christian,” then what do we mean by it?

First, we mean that we have a conviction to follow Christ. Our beliefs matter to us. They matter because we believe they are true.

Education for us is about more than just competence and critical thinking.

Consequently, we think it is important to talk about certain topics that have been excised from schools — such as wisdom, truth, virtue, character, the meaning of life and the importance of religious faith.

As convictional Christians, we are historically Christian. That means we stand within the great tradition that gave rise to the university movement in the West.

As evangelicals, we revere the Bible, not only as the central text of Western civilization, but as God’s Word. We affirm Christ to be, not just a great teacher, but the savior of the world.

By the way, every school is driven by some faith. These days it is often a secular faith — it could be faith in technology, or scientific naturalism, or business, or even a nihilistic faith. We just happen to believe that the Christian faith provides a better foundation for a life of learning in a way that addresses the whole person and the world as it actually exists.

- 6 -

Page 7: ALL THINGS POSSIBLE. · Athletic Conference (RMAC), one of the largest and most competitive conferences in the nation. Men’s sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country,

Our faith is central to who we are. It is not incidental. We are not Christian in name only. Rather we are a religious school with a strong educational mission.

When others tell us to put our faith aside, be they secular accreditors or politicians, we can’t. We refuse to subordinate our faith to ideologies, be they of the far left or the far right. If political leaders tell us to “move on from it” or “get over it,” or to change our core beliefs, about Jesus Christ or God’s created order, why, that would be to deny the motivation that brought us into existence in the first place.

Second, by “unapologetically Christian,” we mean that we try to live and practice our faith as a community. We have community standards that flow from our religious identity. Ultimately we are called to follow Christ and live in faithful obedience to his Word. This will not always make sense to outsiders, but it too is a part of historic Christianity. Our faith not only involves beliefs, but a way of life. In the New Testament there are expectations of what it mean to be a follower of Christ.

Finally, by “unapologetically Christian” we wish to highlight that we passionately believe that Christ is the source of life — the Bible describes Him as the living water, the bread of life, the light of the world, the living Word, the way, the truth, and the life. We have found this to be true.

CCU and its heritage schools were born out of this faith. So were many of America’s colleges and universities. They were born out of, not just a faith impulse, but a specifically Christian vision. That’s true of America’s first university, and most of the Ivy League schools. It is also true of the earliest Western universities. In this respect, CCU is not unusual, just part of a long, great tradition.

What is unique about CCU, is that we still acknowledge it — unapologetically. And we believe that there is abundant life here, not just for us, but for all who look to Jesus Christ.

FLEXIBLE EDUCATION

100% Online

Thousands of adult students have already earned accredited degrees from CCU without ever setting foot on campus. How? By earning their degree 100% online.* (See listing on page 24.)

YOU HAVE THE TIME Flexibility is the calling card for online degree programs — and a main reason why our College of Adult and Graduate Studies offers online education.

Whether you routinely travel for work, have an unpredictable schedule, or keep track of multiple schedules in your family, online courses are flexible enough to work with you. As long as you have internet access, you will be able to log into your courses.

EARN THE SAME DEGREE At CCU, “online” refers only to the format of the courses. You will earn the same accredited degree whether you take courses in a classroom or online. You will be prepared to succeed in your field in the same way that we prepare our students who take courses in the classroom.

EXPERIENCE COMMUNITY, ONLINE Most students learn best in community, that’s why we offer a cohort model of learning for adult students. The cohort system groups you with other students who are in your same degree or certificate program, and you stay together in your courses until you graduate.

YOU’RE SET UP FOR SUCCESS CCU’s online classes are hosted in an electronic platform which connects you with your professors as well as your classmates — even if they are on the other side of the world. Group discussion forums and document sharing are built into the course experience, so you will have plenty of time to connect with and get to know your classmates. Integrated video and web conferencing tools use HD audio, video, a web-based interface, and webcams to improve learner engagement and help students and faculty feel like they’re in the same room together, regardless of their location or device.

CONNECT WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE The CCU Online learning platform also provides a mobile app that allows students to check updates, watch videos, or receive notifications on their smartphones.

A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT Tuition for an online course is the same as that of an in-seat course, no matter which state you live in. Visit the College of Adult and Graduate Studies tuition website for specific cost information for your program at ccu.edu/cags-tuition.

DEGREES FOR REAL LIFE

Be At Your Best We recognize a traditional college experience might not provide the fexibility you need to earn your degree. That’s why the College of Adult and Graduate Studies (CCU Online) has developed carefully planned programs that help you get where you want to go, in a way that works for you.

AWARD-WINNING ACADEMICS Our programs have won awards for their excellence and are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). We also have special accreditations for a number of programs — to ensure that your degree is recognized wherever you go. (See page 28.)

QUICK PROGRESSION Each class is typically five or seven weeks long (most are five). You will take one class at a time, where you will focus on one topic of study. This format is helpful because you can see your progress toward your degree. Every five weeks you’re a few credits closer to your goal!

TIERED STRUCTURE Most of our degrees have a tiered structure. This means that even if you’re not sure that you want to earn a full bachelor’s degree, you could choose to first earn your certificate, which would then apply to your associate or bachelor’s degree if you decided later that you wanted to continue in your program.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT Earning your degree provides you with skills that you can immediately use in the workplace, qualifying you to excel with your job responsibilities — which is key to a successful career. By learning how to find meaning and leadership opportunities right where you are, you will be able to contribute your talents and gifts to a world that needs you to be at your best.

It can take 2-3 weeks to find out how much financial aid you qualify for, so it’s important to complete this step as early in the enrollment process as possible. 6. AUTOMATIC MONTHLY PAYMENT PLAN CCU offers students the option to pay their tuition and fees through a monthly payment plan. Monthly payments will be automatically deducted from a personal bank account or credit card. Payment plans can be set up by semester or annually to allow you to budget your tuition costs.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Kareisha Hartsfield HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE? After being medically retired from the military, I was assigned an advocate through the AW2 Program (Army Wounded Warrior) and she had two degrees on the wall that she earned from CCU. She helped me apply and it has been an amazing experience.

WHAT ARE YOUR DEGREE PLANS? My goals are outrageous. I want to be the Talent Acquisition Manager for Beyonce’s team. In addition, my dream is to be a published fiction author. All the 8-10 page APA-style papers at CCU gave me tons of writing practice.

WHY CCU? I chose CCU because of the amazing reviews from my advocate. I told myself I would enroll in one class and if it wasn’t for me at least I tried. Now I have earned my associate degree and I am 18 credit hours away from my bachelor’s. #WatchOutWorld

WORK/LIFE BALANCE EXPERIENCE: Time management has been the foundation in balancing school and work duties. That extra 10 minutes you spend scrolling social media can be used to read a chapter in your text or post on the discussion board.

HOW DID CCU MAKE IT POSSIBLE? On December 12, 2017, my two-year-old daughter had brain surgery after numerous complications following a stroke at birth. My husband and I were both enrolled in classes at the time and our professors worked with us while she was in ICU and through her recovery. I sent a prayer request to CCU and someone sent a heartfelt prayer that I

Kareisha Hartsfield Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management Service Member To learn more about Kareisha, visit ccu.edu/khartsfeld

read every single day while she was in the hospital. Through it all, CCU did not let us lose hope in our daughter or the continuation of our education. We are so thankful for the prayers and accommodations CCU extended to us in such a stressful time in our lives.

MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE: The most memorable experience was getting “Congratulations! You are approaching the end of your academic program at CCU and need to complete a Graduation Application.” I have never felt so accomplished in my entire life.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO ENTER THE SERVICE? There was a lot of crime and violence. I wanted to give myself a chance at a better life.

HAS YOUR EDUCATION AFFECTED YOUR MILITARY CAREER? Absolutely. Obtaining a Christian-based education has changed my whole thought process about leadership. In addition, it put my husband and me ahead of peers during promotion selections.

DO YOU THINK EDUCATION IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO MILITARY MEMBERS? I honestly hate that I did not listen to my leaders and start taking classes when I was an E1. I waited seven years to realize that I needed to sharpen my critical and strategic thinking skills. Everyone in the military will take the required leadership courses, but there are only a few who will set themselves apart and use their limited personal time to further their education.

GOD’S FAITHFULNESS IN YOUR JOURNEY: My husband and I have seen many trials through our education journey, especially with our daughter’s health. Faith was knowing God had His arms wrapped around our daughter as we signed documents that we acknowledged she could be paralyzed or pass away during a dangerous surgery. Grace was CCU being understanding and sympathetic and not failing us for missed/late assignments, and love is what kept my husband and me holding hands and praying together for hours in that waiting room during her surgery.

Martin Kaufmann CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO CONTINUE YOUR EDUCATION? I attended a men’s weekend retreat offered to help restore and visualize big dreams and goals. After that conference, I became aware that I had skills and a passion to help others improve their functioning and quality of life. Helping others in this way became very attractive to me as I considered my next 25 years in a new career.

THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING A SCHOOL. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CCU? I chose CCU because of its faith-based integration and rigorous academics. I was not interested in a counseling program that was not faith based, nor was I interested in a faith-based counseling program that did not have rigorous academics. CCU was the perfect combination of these attributes. The faculty was the most impressive aspect of these two variables. Their modeling demonstrated how an effective counselor can model Christ’s grace and truth!

HOW HAS YOUR DEGREE ASSISTED YOU IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER? I love using my skills and talents of building things and helping others. In my career of orthotics and prosthetics, these skills and talents meld into a rewarding opportunity. During the past five years, I have developed a passion to help people from the inside (therapy) by building cognitive and emotional well-being.

My counseling master’s degree equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish my new

career and passion. The opportunity to engage in course material with industry leading professors from a Christian worldview proved invaluable.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL? I desired to gain knowledge and skills, and to increase my awareness of mental health so that I could bring about restoration and joy to people. I knew that I wanted a degree that equipped me with the needed academic background to effectively engage in this profession.

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO WITH YOUR DEGREE? I have two primary aspirations. The first is to provide direct counseling services to individuals and families. Second, I am working with several friends to create a national movement bringing Jesus and his message of forgiveness, freedom, and abundance to the forefront of our culture — specifically, to the teenage and early adult audience as they are in the process of resolving upon an identity.

HOW HAS CCU MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE? The online course offering was my gateway to success. The structure of the courses, the assignments, and the on-site residential programs offered me predictability of course work, due dates, and my academic progression. As each of these variables was laid out clearly, it was possible to break down my academic path into daily tasks.

“My counseling master’s degree

equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to

accomplish my new career and passion.”

Rebekah McDonald-Creeden ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR DEGREE? I was inspired to go back to school because of a dramatic life change that I didn’t see coming. After 13 years of marriage, I found myself a divorced, single mom of two kids. I had my bachelor’s degree and a few years of work under my belt, but I was a stay-at-home mom until I found myself in a position where I needed to provide for myself and my kids. I knew that taking the next step and working on a master’s degree would open doors for me to provide the life I felt God calling me to as a mom. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it financially or time-wise, but was confident God would provide a way.

WHAT ARE YOUR DEGREE PLANS? I have always wanted to serve people in a unique, creative, yet needed way. My ultimate goal would be to become an HR specialist that would essentially do contract work for area churches and nonprofits that cannot afford a full-time HR position. I would travel to the organization as needed to help with comprehensive HR tasks, as that is not something that is taught to those in ministry.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CCU? I chose CCU because Christian education is very important to me. I went to a Lutheran grade school, high school, and college. My children go to a Lutheran grade school. My faith is fundamental in my life and I want to be able to openly express and incorporate my faith into my education and relate it in a practical way to my professional life.

WHAT WAS YOUR WORK-LIFE BALANCE WHILE EARNING YOUR DEGREE? With everything on my plate, it was challenging. Because of the way CCU classes are structured, I found it was manageable. With good time management, I was able to get to everything I needed to at work, home, and school. It came down to understanding the priorities of life and not worrying about other things.

“It is often the fear of the unknown that holds us back from doing something benefcial for us.”

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF YOUR EDUCATION? I would say I received way more value than what tuition “paid” for. It is more than just the content of the classes, it is my classmates and professors, the example I was able to set for friends and

family, all those intangibles that create value that other schools can’t give.

HOW WAS YOUR ONLINE EXPERIENCE? The online experience was wonderful for me. There was a little bit of a learning curve since I had finished my bachelor’s 14 years earlier, but once I got used to it, it made balancing being a single mom, full-time worker, and a full-time student manageable. I could do homework on my lunch breaks at work, before my kids got up in the morning, or after they went to bed.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS? Try it! It is often the fear of the unknown that holds us back from doing something beneficial for us. It is scary taking a step like this, but my enrollment counselor and advisor were there to answer questions and help me keep my focus on the “why” of what I was doing and how being online could make it possible for me.

Rev. Jeffrey JordanCURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

To say that Rev. Jefrey Jordan, Associate of Arts in Biblical Studies ’17, Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies ’19, took a round-about path to the Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction program at CCU would be an understatement. The pastor and internationally renowned singer thought that his opportunity to earn a college degree and work as a professor had long since passed him by. It wasn’t until an unexpected email from Colorado Christian University changed everything.

“I’ve always loved education and I thought as a little boy that I would be a professor one day,” Jordan said. “I saw the email, and to this day it still blows my mind because I thought that at my age it was too late. Something inside me, it must have been the Spirit, said ‘give them a call.’”

When Jordan decided to follow the Spirit’s direction he was connected with a CCU Online enrollment counselor who helped Jordan apply to the University.

“Our timing is not His timing. He knows when we should go, and when we should do the things that He wants us to do,” Jordan said. “In this late stage of my life, when most people did it when they were young, I’m doing it now.”

Jordan completed an Associate of Arts in Biblical Studies in December 2017 and a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies in May 2019. He is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction program. He noted that while he’s stayed focused on his education, it has not always been easy.

“There was a time that I said ‘I can’t do this, this is too hard, I’m too old to be doing this,’” Jordan said. “I was trying to balance this (college classes) with a heavy preaching schedule, a heavy

Jeffrey Jordan Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction

singing schedule, and a heavy work schedule. The Scripture says to whom much is given, much is required and that I can do all this through Him who strengthens me. I had to continue. I fought to the very end and now I find myself positioned really well.”

Jordan said that he’s found true joy and direction in his graduate studies.

“I know that I chose what I should have

chosen because I’m in love with every class that

I’ve been in thus far.”

“I think that I’m more excited now than I have ever been. I know that I chose what I should have chosen because I’m in love with every class that I’ve been in thus far.”

The Washington, D.C.-area preacher and former corporate instructor said he intends to use his newly developing skillset to help churches and schools create curriculum and programs that will fit the needs of the areas where organizations are located.

“I want to become a professor, to grab hold of these children and prepare them for their future,” Jordan said. “It’s never too late to do something that you really want to do.’

Jenn Kovach CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING

Life doesn’t always move in a straight line. For Jenn Kovach (Organizational Management in Christian Leadership, B.S. ’15, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, M.A. ’18) this was no exception. Like many students in CCU’s College of Adult and Graduate Studies, Kovach had to overcome both personal and educational hardships to achieve her career goals.

“After I graduated with my bachelor’s from CCU, I had a new sense of confidence to do more with my life,” Kovach said. “For many years I suffered from debilitating anxiety; however, something changed within me when I started attending CCU. God used CCU to push me out of my comfort zone and into my calling.”

Today, Kovach is a licensed clinical mental health counselor in the Denver area focusing on helping patients overcome their opioid additions.

“There is no monetary price you can put on your education. Education is powerful and it is in our education that we become the true stewards of God,” the mother of three said. “My education through CCU has helped me live out the dreams that God put into my heart many years ago. There is no better joy then walking on stage, grabbing your diploma and looking out into the crowd and seeing your loved ones with the happiest of faces.”

Achieving those dreams hasn’t always been easy.

“Before I started my education process at CCU my mother told me, ‘If getting a degree was easy then everyone would have one,’” Kovach said.

“That quote motivated me when the balance of work, school, family, and church became too much for me to carry. At times it was very hard, but I knew achieving my goals would teach my children to never give up on their dreams.

“My daughter was diagnosed with leukemia when I was one year into my master’s program. Deciding to stay in school while she received chemo was by far the hardest obstacle I have overcome. I believe having a healthy support system, as well as the prayers of many others, is what helped me.”

Kovach noted that spiritual support from her classmates and professors as she went through one of the most difficult periods of her life gave her the strength to complete her graduate degree from CCU and become a counselor.

“The support from my CCU peers and faculty made all the difference in completing my master’s degree.

Everyone at CCU genuinely believed in my success and they also prayed over the hardships that I was enduring. I am positive that their prayers helped me get through my program.”

Kovach said she chose Colorado Christian University because of its strong grounding in the Word.

“CCU appealed to me because of the biblical worldview. I loved being a part of the bigger Christian community,” Kovach said. “CCU helped me understand how important my faith is in regard to every aspect of my life. Being around a diverse group of believers prepared me for the real world.”

Kovach’s advice to others: “Stay committed to your dreams and never ignore the small voice inside of you that is pushing you towards the calling God has put on your life.”
