THE BRAKINGSYSTEM IS

AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT FOR YOUR SAFETY

The braking system must react immediately and with precision when you apply pressure

to the brake pedal. The most important components are the drums, pads, discs,

shoes and callipers.Each has its own function and,

together, they contribute to braking and bringing your vehicle to a standstill.

HOW BRAKING WORKS

When you apply pressure to the brake pedal, the main cylinder converts this action into hydraulic pressure, which is then transmitted to the four wheels via the brake fluid. The brake fluid must be changed every 2 years to preserve its incompressible quality.

• For wheels with disc brakes: the pressure activates a hydraulic calliper which squeezes the brake pads onto the disk.

• For wheels with drum brakes: the pressure pushes the 2 brake shoes apart putting them into contact with the drum.

ABS : THE ANTI-BLOCKING SYSTEMThis system maintains the steering effectiveness by ensuring that the wheels do not lock if the tyres lose their grip (wet or icy conditions, snow, etc.).

WHAT ARE THE BRAKING ORGANS THAT WEAR OUT ?

1. THE BRAKE PADS• The friction caused by braking means the spread of

very high heat. Repeated braking can even raise the temperature.

• The material from which the pads are made is more tender than the discs and will therefore wear out more quickly.

Worn pads can damage the brake disc. If you have to brake suddenly, your could lose control of the vehicle.

Have the condition of your pads checked regularly (approximately every 10,000km).Have them replaced if the thickness of the material is down to 2mm.Always have the 4 pads replaced simultaneously on the same axle, in order to prevent asymmetrical braking. This is essential and regulatory..

Have them checked each time you change the pads, in order to ensure that their thickness is compliant with the dimensions set out by the Manufacturer.

2. THE BRAKE DISCS

They are subject to significant stress during braking. Maximum braking efficiency depends on their condition.

3. BRAKE DRUMS

Although they are used less than the pads, they are subject to the same stress.

Change your brake fluid at least once every 2 years. This is simply absolutely necessary.

4. BRAKE FLUID

• Liquid which has been used too much can lead to decreased effectiveness of braking or a leak in the hydraulic system, a source of potential failure. A light on the dashboard indicates when brake fluid reaches its alert level.

• In the event of an unusual drop in brake fluid level, contact your Peugeot Dealer immediately.

PEUGEOT MAINTENANCE TIPS

Have them checked regularly (approximately every 20,000 km).The brake shoe should be replaced when the thickness of the lining is less than1.5mm.

ADVICE FROM PEUGEOT

• After changing your pads, run them in by braking gently and repeatedly

• After washing your vehicle in a car wash, the front discs and pads may be wet. The effectiveness of the brakes can thus be diminished.

• Brake gently and repeatedly so that the heat produced dries the brake parts.

• Use only products approved by Peugeot to clean aluminium rims, so that you avoid damaging the callipers with inappropriate solvents.

• When you brake gently, your brakes may squeak or squeal, but these sounds do not impact the effectiveness of your brakes.

• Don’t forget that a braking system is only really effective with shock absorbers and tyres that are in good condition.

SIGNS OF WEAR TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM

BRAKE INDICATOR ON THE DASHBOARD

Your hand brake is tight or the liquid level is too low or the pads are worn.

Attention! NEVER ignore this signal!

THE BRAKE PEDAL IS HARD

This may be due to a failure in the braking assistance system, the pipes or the hydraulic system, the wheel cylinders or callipers.

THE BRAKE PEDAL IS SOFT

The pedal sinks down and you have to pump in order to brake.

Attention! This is a sign of a serious issue with the hydraulic system!

THE VEHICLE SWERVES WHEN YOU BRAKE

A wheel cylinder or a calliper may have seized up or more simply, a tyre is deflated. Worn shock absorbers can also have the same consequences.

THE VEHICLE VIBRATES WHEN BRAKING

It is probably a faulty brake disc, a loose part or excessive play in the front or rear wheel systems.

THE VEHICLE JUMPS WHEN BRAKING

If the wheels lock up when braking, it can be a sign of a problem with the discs, drums or brake linings.

BRAKING DURING AN NCT INSPECTION Closely monitored and checked, there are many brake checks done during an NCT inspection.To avoid the inconvenience and expense of a follow-up test, do not hesitate to have your braking system checked by your Peugeot Dealer with a pre-NCT inspection.
