2:00 PM – 2:50 PM THE ROLE OF CONVICT LABOR IN THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF BIRMINGHAM Tuscumbia Presenters: Karen Utz, Curator and Historian at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in

Brimingham, AL The story of Alabama’s convict leasing system, in effect from 1866 to 1928 (last state to outlaw this horrific system), is an infamous chapter in the state’s history. Robert Patton, Alabama governor in 1865, declared that the state’s felons, rather than being housed in the penitentiary, should be “leased.” His rationale was that blacks, rapidly becoming the penitentiary’s majority population, did not regard confinement as punishment, and should “feel the hardship of labor in iron and coal mines.” This presentation focuses on early state and local laws enacted by Alabama politicians to justify their use of convict labor. Attention is also paid to the horrendous working conditions, as well as to similarities between the institution of slavery and the convict leasing system. Copies of documents, contracts and photographs add to the overall significance of the lecture. 3:00 PM – 3:50 PM MAKING THE CASE FOR YOUR LIBRARY Sheffield Presenters: Laura Pitts, Library Director, Scottsboro Public Library

Community Partnerships, Marketing, Advocacy and Grant Writing - four things that are extremely important for any library to see growth and success. But just how important are they? Five years ago the Scottsboro Public Library lacked every one of those things and it showed heavily - circulation rates were low, library card holders were average and the number of programs reported for the entire year were eight. Through a lot of hard work and staff determinations, the library is now seeing rapid growth and it is all because community partnerships, marketing, advocacy and grant writing became the four main staples of the library. This session will go in depth about the continued importance of each one, how to develop them within the library and how to engage staff involvement to understand the importance of each four to the future of the library. The session will show the Scottsboro Public Library's world 5 years ago when things were bleak and how they turned it all around now to find success in many areas. This session will be a great encouragement booster for small libraries who are struggling to see growth or who are overwhelmed with trying to engage their community but maybe do not know exactly how to do that. 8:00 AM – 8:50 AM SERVICE TO SNOWBIRDS Florence Presenter: Lisa Leinhos, Orange Beach Public Library Here at the Orange Beach Public Library we have a very interesting clientele for 4-5 months out of the year. We are inundated with "snowbirds", who are retirees from northern states who 'fly' south for the winter. When they arrive in January, many of them are what I call "technologically stranded". They're far from home with all their new gadgets their kids got them for Christmas. They stay for three months in a condo with poor internet, devices they don't know how to use, and no computer or printer. During these months I tailor my services to helping them succeed in the digital age with special technology classes, one on one appointments, and even mobile hot spots they can check out for free. WEARING ALL THE HATS IN AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY: SURVIVING WITH A STAFFING SHORTAGE Sheffield Presenter: Phillip Burgess, Gadsden State Community College Julie Kennedy, Gadsden State Community College With academic libraries facing budget reductions and with material and service prices increasing each year, staffing seems to be where budget cuts are made most frequently. This has resulted in the remaining library staff members taking on more and more responsibilities. This presentation is about maintaining library services despite an ever increasing staffing shortage. Creative solutions will be presented to help combat the effects of these shortages. Among the solutions discussed will be cross-training, use of work study students, and staff flexibility. REDEFINING STORYTIME Shoals D Presenters: Katie Jane Morris, Youth Services Librarian, Hoover Public Library Learn how you can bend or break the traditional storytime mold by incorporating science experiments, math games, and language play and targeting a broader age range.

10:00 AM – 10:50 AM WHAT’S NEXT ALABAMA Florence Presenters: Cristin Brawner, David Mathews Center for Civic Life Tina Nolen, Ashland City Library For the past decade, the David Mathews Center for Civic Life (DMC) has moderated deliberative community forums with diverse Alabamians aimed at changing the way we talk about our most pressing public issues. Deliberative forums invite citizens to consider multiple perspectives, weigh choices, examine tradeoffs, find common ground, and take action locally. As we prepare to celebrate Alabama’s 200th birthday in 2019, we at the DMC are kicking off a three-year statewide forum series that asks, “What’s Next, Alabama?” As a nonpartisan, non-advocacy nonprofit, we will not be suggesting an answer to the question of “What’s Next?” We leave that up to each individual community. During this session, the Mathews Center and Ms. Tina Nolen, Director of the Ashland Public Library, will discuss partnerships between the Mathews Center and public libraries to engage Alabama communities in meaningful deliberation on “What’s Next” for our great state.

The paper discusses perceptions academic librarians have about their own professional education, the potential merit (or lack thereof) of an additional graduate degree, and the relationship and interdependence between both degrees as perceived by those who have obtained them. Two groups of academic librarians are evaluated: those with both an MLS/MLIS and an advanced subject degree, and those with solely an MLS/MLIS degree. AACRL/CUS BEST PRACTICES SESSION #1: PREDATORS, PREY, AND OA: HELPING FACULTY IDENTIFY LEGITIMATE OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES Singing River Presenter: Stephanie Evers Ard, University of South Alabama Kathy Wheeler, University of South Alabama With the increasing availability of open access journals has come the corresponding problem of predatory publishing, journals that utilize the open access model to earn money. Unlike many legitimate open access journals, which require fees to maintain operations, predatory journals accept papers with little or no oversight, regularly foregoing the rigorous peer review and editorial standards expected of academic journals. Moreover, predatory publications often have professional-looking websites and detailed submissions and formatting guidelines, making it difficult to recognize a scam publication. Given the publish or perish culture of most of academia, it is important that faculty members be able to distinguish between a legitimate publishing opportunity and a predatory publisher or journal. Fortunately, librarians have been developing ways to help authors make this distinction. In this presentation, we will discuss the various tools librarians can use to help faculty avoid submitting work to predatory publications. These resources include both directories of verified publications and “blacklists” of known scams, but because no such lists can be exhaustive, we will also address how to recognize both the hallmarks of reliable publications and the traits common to unreliable ones. Finally, we hope to locate our discussion of predatory publishing within the larger conversation about scholarly integrity.
