4-H STATE YOUTH CONFERENCE Attention: Youth in grades 8-12, mark your calendars for 4-H State Youth Conference—June 27-29. Every June, almost 1,000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. Registration for State Conference will open soon and typically closes approximately June 1. You can also check out financial aid applications, due April 25 to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. More information and links are in the right-hand column and will continue to be updated in the coming months. WANTED: 4-H CAMP COUNSELORS Attention High School 4-H Members! Do you like the outdoors? Are you up for adventures with junior 4-H members? Then being a 4-H camp counselor may be for you. We are looking for 4-H youth counselors to provide leadership in partnership with 4-H Staff at the Regional Pine Bluff 4-H Camps. Both junior camps are 2 days and one night. Junior camps will be June 13-14 and June 20-21. Sign up for one camp or both. Applications will be available for 9-12th grade members. Contact the Extension Office for applications and

Cook This! Challenge May 13, 10 AM-2 PM at Postville High School Age Divisions: Grades 4-6 , 7-8, 9-12 Modeled after the competition at the Iowa State Fair, this fun event is coming to northeast Iowa! Teams of 3 will complete in three challenges. 1. Culinary: Work together to prepare a recipe in the designated time and be critiqued by a panel of judges. 2. Communications: Present a group speech on topic that you are given. 3. Additional: Identify or solve a challenge related to food, nutrition, or wellness. Gather your friends and create a team! LEADERS UPDATES: UPCOMING DEADLINES AND REMINDERS Resources — Looking for specific resources for your club? I am looking to help! I want to hear from you
and your club. I have put club/county surveys on your club shelfs to walk though with your club at your next
meeting. From there I am going to review the needs and wants of the county to start preparing kits for clubs
to check-out.
If you are planning a club activity that is NOT documented in your club program, please remember to
contact the Extension Office about insurance coverage for special activities. Liability activity forms can
be found on our website www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/4h under the Leader heading.
Fair Books– We print new fair books on a two year rotation. In 2017 we will be printing a new fair book for
each family. Books are ready to be picked-up at the Extension Office.
Volunteers Needed —We are looking for adults and high school youth to help with our 4-H program in-
cluding but not limited to; afterschool programming, County Council and Saturday Clover Kids. Or, if you
know of an adult who is interested in becoming a leader of a new 4-H project club let us know! If you have
an idea for a new project club or are interested in volunteering in an existing 4-H program, please contact
the Extension Office.

4-H Medical Information/Release Forms- Copies are available on your club shelves. Please remember to
add these forms to your tote. The tote should travel with your club to meetings, outings, and events. The
goal is to be prepared in case of an emergency.
IF you have any club members NOT re-enrolled yet, they need to do so ASAP! If they are not enrolled in
Allamakee County 4-H, they can not participate at the fair and they are not covered by insurance.

CLUB INFORMATION
4-H’ERS FOR 4-H CAMPAIGN Each year the State 4-H Council sponsors the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign, which raises money to fund
projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. Their goal has been placed at $31,000! They are ask-
ing each 4-H club in Iowa to donate a mini-mum of $3.00 per member to the campaign. All clubs that meet
the $3.00 per member goal will receive a special campaign certificate. Donation forms have been put on club
shelves.

NORTHEAST IOWA FAMILY STEM FEST Attend the Northeast Iowa Family STEM Festival on Thursday, April 13 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Center
for the Arts, Luther College in Decorah. The festival is free and open to the public and all ages are welcome to
attend. So bring your whole family! Over 25 organizations from the area will present exhibits with hands-on
activities for kids and their families. Attendees can drive robots, conduct amazing science experiments, and
much more!
4-H TOPPERS ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT The 4-H Toppers will be hosting their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 AM at the Water-ville School Gym!
Do you know what a "hashtag" is? Are you an organized and trustworthy self-starter? The Allamakee County Fair Board is looking for a part-time marketing intern! Job duties would include updating the fair website, cre-ating a social media presence and assisting with other marketing and fair projects. They ask applicants to have a valid driver's license, transportation and access to the internet and a computer. For information and an application, contact Katie Melcher at [email protected].
4-H members and their parents can cheer the Waterloo Black Hawks Hockey Team on Friday, April 7 vs. Far-go at 7:05 PM at Young Arena. Tickets are $7 each for 4-H members and parents. This would be a fun winter club activity!

EXPRESS YOURSELF AT EXPRESSIONS DAY— WORKSHOP What is Expressions Day? Join Erika Johnson and other County Council members for an interactive workshop to explore and participate in Communications and Clothing activities to prepare you for Expressions Day! The workshop will be held Saturday, April 22 from 9:00 AM –12:00 PM with parent showcase at 11:30 AM and is open for youth in grades 4-12. Join us for a morning of fun, preparation, and education! FAIR IMPROVEMENT CLUB CHALLENGE The Fair Board has identified the new 4-H Food Stand as the 2017 Fair Improvement Project. The fundraising
goal for this year is $2,500. This can be met if each club gives at least $250. If your club would like to donate,
please drop off checks to the Allamakee County Extension Office by April 28. Please make checks payable
to the Allamakee County Extension Office.

USDA YOUTH LOANS The Farm Service Agency has the USDA Youth Loan Program available for any 4-H/FFA members, ages 10-
21 years of age, and looking for help to finance their projects. Applications and brochures can be picked up
at the Extension Office or contact your local FSA office 563-382-2255.
LIVESTOCK REMINDERS
4-H/FFA HORSE PROEJCT MEETING The spring 4-H/FFA Horse Project Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11 at 6:00 PM at the Extension
Office. We will discuss rule changes, upcoming workouts, workout dates, horse presentations, fair and an-
swer any questions. This meeting is open to all enrolled 4-H/FFA members. Please RSVP to Lana by April 10

4-H/FFA RABBIT WORKSHOP: CLAYTON COUNTY The Northeast Iowa 4-H/FFA Rabbit Workshop will be Saturday, April 1 from 9:00 to 12:00 PM at Strawberry
Point Civic Center in Strawberry Point. Questions on the workshop call Kelly Faust 563-933-6561. Check out

MARKET DERBY POULTRY The Market Derby Poultry class is back! Class is limited to chickens only. To be eligible, birds must have been
ordered through the Allamakee County Extension Office. Each exhibitor will be allowed to enter one pen of
two derby poultry. A pen of two consists of two birds of either sex. Poultry orders must be placed and paid for
at the Extension Office by April 10. Chicks will be identified with numbered wing bands indicating they are
part of the derby project. Distribution of chicks will be done prior to delivery of chicks. All chicks will be Jumbo
Cornish-Rock. Entry forms will be mailed to youth enrolled in the poultry project the first part of March or can
be picked-up in the office. Tentative pick-up is May 25.
DOG PROJECT
RABBIT WORKSHOP: ALLAMAKEE COUNTY
Dog Project workouts will kick off on Monday, April 17 at 5:30 PM. The start of the year letters and place-ment schedules will be mailed out soon, please keep an eye out for these. If you are interested in the Dog Project and were unable to attend the Kick-Off Meeting please contact Morgan ASAP. Please be sure you have your waiver, fees paid, ID on 4HOnline, and vet papers to the Extension Office prior to the first class. Please stop in the office if you need to pick up any forms. Attention Clover Kids — If you are interested in participating in a new addition to the Dog Project please contact Morgan to get your name on the mailing list. When there is more information for you we will be mailing out letters.
Allamakee County 4-H Council members are hosting a hands-on educational workshop for youth interested in
the Rabbit Project area. Join them Friday, April 21 at 6:30 PM at the Allamakee County Extension Office.
Please RSVP to the Extension Office by April 17. Please plan to bring your rabbit.

There are two ways that 4-H & FFA members can identify hogs for the Swine Show at the Allamakee County Fair. The Swine Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, April 1 at the fairgrounds from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Members need to attend the weigh-in if they want to participate in the Rate of Gain Contest or Derby Class. 4-H youth will need to go into 4-H Online and verify their swine weigh-in information. OR members can self-tag swine by picking up tags and a tagger from the Extension Office between April 15-May 15. All swine ID forms must be completed. If ear notched please note that on ID sheet, and returned to the Extension Office with a picture of each tag in the hog’s ear by May 15. Digital photos are acceptable by email to [email protected]. Members who self-tag pigs are not eligible for Rate-of-Gain or Derby class. If you are interested in showing Swine at the 2017 Iowa State Fair please contact Morgan.
LIVESTOCK ID’s—DUE MAY 15 Livestock identification will be done through 4-H Online (www.iowa.4honline.com) for Breeding beef, Horses, Dairy, Dairy Goats, Dogs, Poultry, Rabbits, Breeding Meat Goats, and Breeding Sheep. Identification is due in by Monday, May 15, 2017. To enter non-weigh in species, you will need to log into your 4-H online family record, and add the needed information to the Animal ID for each member’s record. Weigh-In animals will be entered into 4-H online by county extension staff after the weigh-in. It will be the responsibility of the member to log into 4-H Online to verify that all information is correct. Information that is not verified by the member within the verification time frame will be locked and will not be able to be changed after that date. If you have questions about this process feel free to contact the Allamakee County Extension Office. Each 4-H member is responsible for entering their own ID’s. Directions and help sheets are at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/enrollment/help.htm. Reminder: Dairy, Dairy Goats, Breeding Meat Goats, and Horses that were ID’d last year, may be re-entered with the click of a button!

All 4-H/FFA members exhibiting sheep and meat goats at the Allamakee County Fair should plan to attend the Sheep & Meat Goat Weigh-In on Saturday, May 13 from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at the fairgrounds. If you are planning on exhibiting at the State Fair, please contact the Allamakee County Extension Office for retinal imagining arrangements.
LIVESTOCK FAIR INFORMATION
Friendly Reminders: (New in 2016) ALL fans for cattle in the cattle barns (Dairy, Beef, Sweeney) must blow North. Meaning no butt fans or aisle fans. You may have to redesign your fan racks and exhibit area. If we all work together to overcome the electrical issues it will make for a safer and more pleasurable experience.
Stalls are reserved for livestock, feed and livestock supplies. Please only reserve the number of stalls your livestock will be occupying during the fair for the June 15 Entry Deadline.
2017 Fair Books have been distributed to club leaders and will be available at your April meeting. New copies will be printed for families. Please keep an eye out for rule updates.
2017 FAIR BOOK UPDATES Page 12 - ETHICS & SPORTSMANSHIP #28. All Livestock exhibitors will be eligible for showmanship. 4-H Members
must have livestock in that Department to enter showmanship competition. We strongly encourage all members to show
in showmanship when eligible (Grade just completed). Showmanship classes are divided by age division: Junior (4-6
grade), Intermediate (7-8 grade), and Senior (9-12 grade). Exhibitor may only win each division once, upon winning a
division exhibitors may move up to next age division or can compete in their perspective age group but are ineligible to
win and can only receive up to Honorable Mention. Once they reach the senior level they may compete indefinitely. Ex-
hibitors must use their own animal in showmanship classes. (Effective 2017)

HORTICULTURE CHALLENGE Class 711L Horticulture-Home Judged Garden -- This project may consist of a vegetable and/or flower gar-den. The exhibitor will prepare a folder containing photos, weed & pest control, knowledge of your gardening project and an explanation about the garden project. The fair folder will be used as the judging criteria for rib-bon placing. Home garden judging will take place the week prior to fair. Entry forms are available at the Ex-tension Office, forms are due June 15. Entry form can be found at www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/page/member-info or at the Extension Office. Tentative judging is scheduled for Monday, July 10.

HORTICULTURE: BUCKET-OF-TALL-CORN CONTEST
Interested in welding? Whether you are brand new to welding or a welding pro, we have an opportunity for you! We are currently working with local welding partners to create a welding experience for 4-H members. We are looking at providing a workshop to provide you tools and resources to complete a welding exhibit for the fair. Start thinking of how you and/or your whole club can participate. From $15 Challenge to Share-The-Fun there is a category for everyone (including Clover Kids) to participate! This year Expressions Day will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Waukon. Entry forms are available at the Extension Office and are due by June 1.
LIVESTOCK: SHARE-A-PROJECT A “Shared” project is any project or animal that is not owned by the 4-H’er or his/her immediate family. The objective of the share-a-project agreement is to allow 4-H’ers who cannot house or own a large animal to learn the skills of feeding, management, care and training of animals and to show at the fair. Exhibitors are only eligible for shared projects if they or their direct family do not own any other animals of that species. The

New this year, we will be doing a Food Stand Orientation/Safety Training on Tuesday, July 18. All club members, lead-ers and parents are asked to attend this important 30 minute
training.

Cook This! is modeled after the competition at the Iowa State Fair. Teams of three will work together to compete in
three challenges demonstrating their ability in food preparation, testing their knowledge in matter related to food,
nutrition, and wellness, as well as their communication skills as they deliver a presentation on a related topic. The
challenge is designed to test participants’ skills in equipment and food product identification, knife skills, meal com-
pletion, creativity, communication, and teamwork.
Challenges will vary based on age divisions: Grades 4-6 (Junior), 7-8 (Intermediate), 9-12 (Senior)
*There is a new twist for the Senior Division in the Culinary challenge. You will need to develop a school meal idea
that utilizes local foods and adheres to budget and nutrition guidelines. The group is allowed an adult mentor(s) to
help them through this planning process.*
Gather your friends and create a team! At least one person needs to be a 4-H member. Open to youth in northeast
Iowa in grades 4th-12
th. Limit of 5 teams per age division. Once team is registered, you will receive the challenge
packet with all the information you need to prepare for the event.

INTERMEDIATE DISCOVERY TRIP
DISCOVER DUBUQUE June 6-7, 2017
Grades: 7-8
Join us for a brand new 4-H experience specifically de-
signed for Intermediate 4-H members in 2017. This two-day
overnight adventure will discover Dubuque and the surround-
ing area. Youth will be staying at the Days Inn Hotel in Dubu-
que. The adventure includes:

University of Dubuque Aviation & Airport Tour
